Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

I would have to pick X if I only had one choice. Mega Man X remains as one of my favorite platformers to this day, and I had just as much fun replaying it through the MMX Legacy Collection as I did years ago. That bangin' Central Highway remix from the 8.8 Direct really brought out the nostalgia for me, and it would be amazing to have a Central Highway stage in Smash.

I'd love Tron Bonne as a Legends rep though, I've always had a soft spot for her. Plus, she was one of my mains in both MvC2 and MvC3, she was so much fun to use and I love her personality. The Servbots would be really great in Smash too, I can just imagine how happy they would be out on the battlefield.

Volnutt would make for an interesting choice as well, and if it meant Roll Casket could make it in, I'd be all for it. :)
The legends love is strong with this one.

I admit, tron is a better rep on the long run.
And x would be great. X4 is my favorite. Was the main one i entered the series on and i loved the pure camp.

I know everyone always talks about how Nintendo wouldn't want Smash promotion to distract from Pokémon Let's Go (especially since that helps them believe that we'll get the final bunch of news sooner rather than later), but do we have any precedent to actually believe this is a particularly big concern of theirs, enough to shape the marketing strategy of Ultimate around the new Pokémon games' release window? It seems as though TPC is generally pretty autonomous with their marketing strategies (note the typical lack of Pokémon announcements in Directs, sometimes only for a batch of news to be released independently a week or less before or after). Between that and the fact that Pokémon is one of the few franchises in the world that is basically too big to fail, it doesn't seem outlandish to think that Nintendo only gives a small amount of consideration to Pokémon releases and reveals when plotting their own marketing plans.
The IPs in question are insignificant. I'd say the same if it was Zelda and Mario. Detracting attention away from one huge game with another huge game splits interest of each, which wouldn't benefit a company that profits from both.

Obviously Smash and Pokemon are so large that they'll both flourish regardless, but the most advantageous strategy, in my unprofessional opinion, is to give Smash the attention now, Pokemon getting the bulk of November, and then one last showing for Smash in December.

Pokemon may have more autonomy than other Nintendo series, but optimal marketing benefits all involved. Then again, Nintendo has released Mario and Zelda titles on the same day on different platforms, and that doesn't seem ideal to me either, so who knows. Nintendo gonna Nintendo.

Though Nintendo giving anything less than significant marketing and scheduling consideration to the most lucrative franchise of all time, which they co-own, seems very unlikely. There are just other parties which have a say in things.

3DS, WII U, and Switch era characters are pretty safe bets I'd say. Nintendo most likely wants DLC characters to be things they know will sell, so I'd say DLC will probably feature a lot of recent characters. At the very least, I personally am 100% convinced Spring Man and Ribbon Girl will be among the first. I wanna say Octolings will be pretty high up there as well, but I honestly don't know.
I hope most of the DLC is 1st party characters this time around. Last time we only got 1 new first party character as DLC (sorry vets don't count). There's a few "relevant picks" to choose from with

- Spring-Man/Ribbon Girl (ARMS)
- Octolings (Splatoon 2)
- Rex & Pyra (Xenoblade Chronicles 2)
- Dixie, Cranky, or Funky Kong (Tropical Freeze/Switch port)
- Captain Toad (Captain Toad Switch/3DS port)
- Bandana Dee (Star Allies and Battle Royale)
- Whoever the new FE Lord is in Three Houses
- Elma (Xenoblade Chronicles X)
- Rabbid Peach (technically 3rd party but I'll count it as 1st)
- Maybe one of the Champions from Breath of the Wild
- Melten (lol)

^ I'd welcome any of these characters with open arms honestly. I just don't want the DLC to be NOTHING but mostly 3rd parties again....

I forgot about the many Ryus we have overall. Oh, imagine Xander Mobus recording their names over and over again.

As for Hayabusa, maybe he can get the :ultlink::ultike::ultcloud: treatment, and get two different types of costumes, being the original and later design.
Hayabusas games were always to hard for me, but he does deserve a spot. Doa assists would be a win also.

Oh heck no! Last thing we don't need is those annoying Rabbids. They're the video game answer to Minions. Too overexposed.
Aren't Rabbids pre-Minions? They weren't as annoying as I thought, and surprisingly subversive in Kingdom Battle. I'd say if we get Rayman, Rabbids would be a likely assist (not a playable character though, that should obviously go to Rayman... imho)

DLC-wise, I think Spring Man/Ribbon Girl and Rex are probably the safest bets as of right now. Their games came out a bit too late to make it on the base roster, but both games were pretty successful Switch titles so it's safe to assume they'll turn up.

I'm expecting some heavy-hitting 3rd party characters though too.

I also wouldn't be too upset if Kasumi ended up as a Ryu Hayabusa echo... I mean, they don't play too differently to each other when they cross over... do they?

M+R has made me grow to kinda like the Rabbids. I really wouldn't mind them...
While this may be fake, this doesn't hurt Shantae's chances at all

Personally i believe she will be revealed sometime this month, probably in a....INDIEpendent Reveal
imo, Shantae's chances are as good as Shovel Knight's... So...

Can people stop acting as though Bandana Waddle Dee debuted in Kirby's Return to Dream Land? He debuted all the way back in 1996 in Kirby Super Star's Megaton Punch sub-game. This should be common knowledge among Bandana Waddle Dee supporters.

I never played any of the male chatacters in doa. I could not tell you. (Yes i am that shallow at times)
But if they could make it happen, i would be happy.

I have a love/hate relationship with doa, but .mostly positive with age.

People are reeaaaaaallllly sleeping on the Rabbids IMO. I could totally see it, Nintendo and Ubisoft have a great relationship right now (basically think Nintendo and Platinum during Wii U) and Kingdom Battle was a runaway success with fans and critics, and is being heralded as a must have for the Switch. Kingdom Battle Rabbids (with each Rabbid being an alt ala Bowser Jr. and the Koopalings) is definitely a strong possibility to me.

Rabbids over Rayman though? Way more iconic, more moveset potential, and has been highly requested, even having a trophy. And, to be honest, I tried getting into Legends but couldn't get the feel for it, but I recognize his significance.

For me personally, I would love it. I grew up with the original Raving Rabbid games and have very fond memories of playing them with my folks.

Also, I find Rabbid Peach hilarious, but to each their own, I suppose. :)

Given the trophies in wiiu, i am surprised at no ubisoft cross overs for smash. Feels like something is missing.

Same with captain tv (i hope that is the runner guys name).

If you like them that's fine, but I really can't stand them.
I know they're supposed to be kinda annoying and that's the charm, but I don't find it charming. I just find it annoying.
That's just me, though.

Rayman may be considered iconic by some (I think he is), but I'd say the Rabbids have (and please don't hurt me for saying this) kinda grown past him in exposure and popularity. Heck, Ubisoft even uses them as kinda semi-mascots sometimes, and Kingdom Battle has only helped them grow. I really could see it happen.

Considering we had the Rayman trophy in Smash 4, I could totally see the Rabbids making it into Ultimate in some form, on top of everything else you mentioned (I really enjoyed Kingdom Battle as well, by the way). Whether they'll be playable, an assist, a regular trophy, or even potential Spirits Mode enemies, I'd be cool with pretty much any representation of them.

I do hope that Rayman can have a more prominent role than just as a regular trophy again though.

If one of those Rabbids make the cut. I know whose gonna become my new punching bag...
I HATED the Rabbids before Mario + Rabbids but after playing that game (the best Mario game to release on Switch in the year 2017) it changed my opinion on them (well at least the Mario based ones). Ubisoft made them less annoying in that game. With all the Ubisoft/Nintendo love I'm honestly expecting an Ubi rep as DLC. I know a lot of people want Rayman (I don't). You can't deny how big of a success Kingdom Battle was and their is a rumor that a sequel is on the way due to Ubi's recent poll/survey asking what Mario characters Nintendo fans enjoy the most. I could totally see Rabbid Peach getting in whether people like it or not.

Even though BWD’s design existed back then, it can be argued that BWD as a “character” debuted in Super Star Ultra. It’s kinda like how Morpho Knight’s design existed way back in the day, but didn’t become an actual character until recently. It really depends on what Sakurai though of BWD back in the day; did he think of BWD as an individual among Waddle Dees, or did he really think of him as a Waddle Dee with a hat? (I do want BWD, but yeah, it’s worth pointing out as it’s something we really can’t be certain of, unless he’s said anything about it in an interview, has he?)
