Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

A Halloween direct would be pretty cool, but depending on who's left I feel like they would've probably saved Simon and Richter for it. Unless they've got some even spookier characters in store.

Edit: I guess me and Smashing Ramen had the same thought lol
Well I do feel Skull Kid, Medusa and Nightmare are pretty spooky with Halloween vibes. I doubt its gonna happen but until next week or the end of this month I'm gonna keep dreaming.

Remember how Brawl and Sm4sh went? Yeah...
To be fair, Wii U only leaked because of 3DS' ESRB leak. The roster probably would have stayed hidden if it weren't for that.

Brawl wasn't really affected either due to no one believing the leakers, similar to how Verge's early leaks for this game were harmless because not many believed him.

Plus, both Sakurai (and I think even Bill, right?) have gone on regard to state they're aiming to avoid major leaks from happening again. Also, it's mainly about the timing: Nintendo 9 times out of ten does their final game focused info dumps a month or so before release. I can't really think of any recent game that breaks that trend, as even outside of Directs, they do final press releases in that same timeframe as well. That just seems to be how their marketing works (IMO, at least). I honestly think the last bit of news is coming soon, so I wouldn't worry about it. :)

If they're smart then it'd be wise to reveal the final characters this month whether next week or last week of the month. Why would they risk a third time?

So... how likely do you guys think it is for the final roster to be leaked before release?
I'm surprised it hasn't happened already tbh. We're getting pretty close to release.

Then again, after the ESRB fiasco, they're probably trying their damndest to keep everything hidden away.

Problem is not Skull Kid, Medusa, nor Nightmare are directly Halloweeny meanwhile the Belmonts' trailer featured Mummies, Frankenstein, Reapers, Ghouls, and Dracula

It'd be odd if they planned a Halloween direct and didn't save Castlevania for said direct.

I'm aware they're not Halloween themed but they do have pretty good spooky vibes to the holiday.

I don't expect it to happen anyways so my expectations are staying low.

Yeah, the game is already rated, so they passed the ESRB hurdle this time...
Just wondering how it's gonna get leaked this time...
How early does Nintendo usually send out review copies for games?

I'm hoping they're doing a good job keeping the good stuff hidden--the stuff rumored/leak has been pretty lackluster. :p

I 100% guarantee the final news will come out way before then, as you won't see major spaces talk about anything like that or even recieve stuff like that until the end of November. Youtubers probably won't receive it at all unless they're the huge ones as well.

Well, in my opinion, anyway. :p

Oh no I agree, those characters would still fit the Halloween theme. Sorry for the confusion. I kinda just meant I would've expected them to save the Castlevania characters for Halloween unless there were other characters who could also fit in a Halloween direct should they choose to do that.

I just wanna remind people that if the less than popular theories which are rotated around here end up as true, then the final roster has already been leaked despite no one being aware of it

If it does happen it'll be quite a treat (Pun intended). Though others might have a different opinion.

Wait... Are you calling Incineroar and Ken lackluster? Reveals near the end of the cycle are almost never hype...
You don't know how many times I have to defend these guys...

Scrolling through some Ninja Gaiden again, and it would be great to hear this as Ryu's theme.

A very popular track, indeed. Remix or not, it sounds great!

Be fair, the chaos of all the fakes leaks has made it all interesting. No one saw ridley or k rool

And isabelle being a non echo was also a surprise.

I still think we are getting 2 more in the base roster, but i would not doubt 10 dlc in the running.

And those will of been planned before hand.
So, it is still exciting.

We'll have a Direct within the next 4 weeks I feel, if we don't, that'll put us midway into November, and you know things will have leaked by then.

You could just have Fi use magic or something. I know she's never shown actually doing something like that, but it would be a necessary evil.
Pretty much I could see them going that route for her. No joke I'd be happy if they actually reveal Fi or Tetra (or Impa, or Mipha) for Smash I like her design, n . It'd be nice if they based her off of Hyrule Warriors, and have her attack gracefully like a dancer, while occasionally transforming into a sword that slashes foes. After all, the only thing better than a swordfighter, is a swordfighter that can become a sword! Extra point if in doubles, your teammate can wield Fi as a blade if they're Allies

Especially because preload will 100% go live by then. We really are in the homestretch right now.

I feel like the fact that they emphasized that all of the characters will be revealed prior to release, within the first few minutes after properly revealing the game, is making people believe that the last reveals will be big. We don't have any hidden characters this time around.

I am super stoked for ken and incineroar. Was not for the fire cat originally, but he has grown on me like isabelle.

And ke will be epic. Playing street fighter in my smash game. Cannot wait for the event on that one.

Holy moly, read a few pages back and this place has really decayed with how long we've run dry. Even had some muppet trying to aggressively assert their prediction on others as fact. Like, really dudes?

There's no problem if you feel that way, it's my view... yet another Pokemon (despite 2-4 returning Pokemon veterans) and a clone. If you feel differently, glad you like them.

Also, for those interested in what data mining could unearth, there is the possibility DLC could be spoiled depending on how careless devs are.

It's how Kirby's entire DLC lifespan got spoiled, and tons of down the road stuff for Splatoon 2 leaked this way. We all had a hunch playable Octolings were coming since last year thanks to data mines. Model data was found for male and female Octolings in player data pretty near launch, so most people knew it was most likely coming. So yeah, DLC is not gonna ever be safe. All we can hope is that Smash's devs are more careful than Splatoon's and Kirby's.

I do hope what ever comes next for Smash announcements are the final characters. No dilly dallying about this if Sakurai doesn't want another roster leak prior to the release happening.

If it is just Incineroar and Ken? Get them announced ASAP.
If there's more then that in the base game still? Get them all announced ASAP anyway.

I don't necessarily think Sakurai meant there'd be more then one event announcing characters when he said reveals would slow down. Technically nothing slows down reveals then getting them all out there at a later time and coming to a complete stop until DLC starts. (Especially if there's less then 5 characters left, which may be the case)

Logically it would make sense for Nintendo to have the Direct soon so as to give Pokemon breathing room for a targeted marketing push leading up to release, but it's Nintendo. So who the **** knows. They could stay quiet about Smash til December.
I know everyone always talks about how Nintendo wouldn't want Smash promotion to distract from Pokémon Let's Go (especially since that helps them believe that we'll get the final bunch of news sooner rather than later), but do we have any precedent to actually believe this is a particularly big concern of theirs, enough to shape the marketing strategy of Ultimate around the new Pokémon games' release window? It seems as though TPC is generally pretty autonomous with their marketing strategies (note the typical lack of Pokémon announcements in Directs, sometimes only for a batch of news to be released independently a week or less before or after). Between that and the fact that Pokémon is one of the few franchises in the world that is basically too big to fail, it doesn't seem outlandish to think that Nintendo only gives a small amount of consideration to Pokémon releases and reveals when plotting their own marketing plans.
