Street Fighter V is a different case where all people wanted was just more consistent updates. Marvel VS. Capcom Infinite is a WAY more harsher case, where people wanted to see updates to SFV and to see things fixed all across the board in MVCI. The roster, graphics, animations - not to mention the extremely bad publicity it got, I assure you that Capcom would like to stay as far away from this game as possible.
Smash is big enough that the momentum built up through E3 and the August direct will likely carry it until close to release; even if the marketing department do nothing, journalistic venues (like, for example, Gamexplain) and gaming channels/theorists (e.g. Alpharad, RelaxAlax,
Billybae10K
and the like) will keep it in the public eye (outlets like Etika rely on new content to make reactions).
No, people wanted way more than consistent updates. They wanted better balancing, more characters they already loved; just like MVCI.
i think if MVC2 was made nowadays theyd add Wolverine and Old Man Logan as the second version. That woulda sorta maybe been different?

If Capcom wants to level up from MVC3, they need to put all DMC4 characters into the game: Dante, Vergil, Trish, Lady, Nero. All of them.

I just want to have a team of Spider-Man characters damn it. Spider-Man, Green Goblin AND Venom? That'd be sick. Call it "Spider-Man and His Amazing Enemies." And that's not getting into Cloak and Dagger or maybe Punisher. Also a full Mega Man and X-Men team would be cool to see again after a good while.
Yeah, thats the point they can only pull this because smash will sell millions even if they dont market it. Plus the marketing on the real world is giving the demo which is the same from almost 5 months ago. Also, don't forget that Smash Ultimate is being marketed in the real world, showing up at Gaming Tournaments and Conventions.
That being said, huge series like Smash are the only Video Game franchises that this strategy can work for. Low amounts of marketing have killed lesser games (e.g. Golden Sun Dark Dawn).

Events seem like a given, since they don't require a ton of new resources(compared to Adventure/Subspace), and have been in every game, barring the 3DS version, but Smash 4 on Wii U had so I say it counts.

POKEMON anime sure
Put Scrooge McDuck on the Capcom side as a reference to the NES Ducktales game as Howard's rival. Marvel's owned by Disney, so it's not that much of a stretch.
It likely doesn't mean much as Ash Greninja did exist in games. And even if it did debut in the anime, it's Pokemon, a series that started out as a game, let alone being owned by Nintendo. Misty and Oak's trophies in Melee were based on their anime designs not their game designs. AND a ton of Pokemon use their anime voices, but not their game cries.

If Sakurai can balance - to a certain extent - 80 characters, and Square Enix OF ALL COMPANIES balances 200 characters in Tobal 2, Capcom should really go for the Smash Ultimate route and just bite the pillow to save a ****ton of face. Especially after saying that "characters are just functions", and they've been lambasted for that ever since. Like, how dumb do you have to be to say that, as a developer for the game? That's like saying "King K. Rool is really only just a function for Smash," like get the **** out of here lmao

Tobal 2 came out in 1997 when people didn't really care about any sort of balance in fighting games. There were also many less components for a given character in Tobal 2.
