I think it's mainly due to the fact that at this point, Smash Bros. has become the most prestigious spotlight for gaming as a whole. When you see people on the roster, or additions to the roster, they're signifying and solidified as part of gaming history. Not to mention the absolute power it has just as a franchise. Does Minecraft, Tetris and other iconic games sell more? Yes. But do they have the prestige and notoriety as Smash? I don't think so. You certainly don't see your daily rounds of reaction videos making the waves whenever E3 or a Direct pops up.

Think of it like a Content Cop - when iDubbbz drops one, literally "Everyone is here!" So I can see why people are so emotionally invested in the rosters of each Smash, because you wanna see your franchise be solidified and have reason to be a part of gaming history and to see your favorite characters kicking ***.

I’d compare them to a crowd of spoiled children who want various different things, but no matter what you do, theyll never be satisfied. You can only hope that one day, they’ll grow up.

I'm going to say now, I don't have any faith in Vergeben or Box Theory. I thought my beliefs could lead to some discussion.
Vergeben hasn't really proven himself to me, all his leaked characters were characters I personally either were predicting or had at least considered seriously. It really seems like lucky guesses more than anything to me.

There has always been theories like box theory regarding promotional material and I don't recall any of them becoming true, and just 2 characters left sounds extremely unlikely to me.

NO ONE predicted Ridley. No one predicted Simon. No one Predicted K. Rool (yes, I know he didn't leak K. Roll), and no one predicted a non-echo Isabelle. You are flat out being delusional if you think every single pick of his so far were lucky guesses. He is a leaker who has gotten some things wrong before, yes, but he has also gotten a lot right and there is NO WAY you can just "lucky guess" a roster like we have now.

Skepticism is fine, but you can't claim that every Character revealed so far was "obvious". They weren't.

'No One' is a strong term to use. I had always considered Ridley for Smash 5 personally as a possibility, yes there was always the 'too big' argument but look at Villager and Pac-Man who were rejected for Brawl but came into Smash 4, after the outcry of Ridley being a hazard on Pyrosphere it makes total sense. Simon is the one thing which makes me consider Vergeben in all honesty however at this point the ordeal with Konami was over and Snake coming back was quite a big possibility, besides Wolf and Ice Climbers he was easily the most wanted veteran to return and if you are going to get Snake back, getting another Konami character makes sense. Why even bring up K. Rool if he didn't leak him.... I actually predicted a unique Isabelle as did quite a few others before E3, it was only after that when people started considering her to be an echo and even Vergeben said he was unsure.

My final guesses are Ken and that pokemon from the Box Theory. Not necessarily because I have faith in the box theory, but because usually the least exciting theory is the one that ends up being true.
I can only have my expectations met or exceeded.

You know what bugs me? People insisting Ultimate is going to fail to be the Melee killer like that's somehow a bad thing. Ultimate isn't meant to be a Melee killer. The sped up gameplay, reduced landing lag, and directional air dodges making a comeback? Those are all things Smash 4 players were asking for. This game is killing Smash 4, and not Melee, because it's meant to be the Smash 4 killer. It takes almost everything Smash 4 had going for it and makes it better.

No matter how good of a game Ultimate or any future Smash game turns out to be, they won't kill Melee. That community is too dedicated to just give it up over the newest, shiniest thing. And quite frankly, they like it for different reasons then we Sm4sh players like our game. It's not wrong to think Melee is better if it's what appeals to you, but it's not really fair to judge Smash 4's or Ultimate's competitive success to such a different game.

Yeah I know that the popular opinion is that Ultimate will be an amazing competitive game, but there's so much pessimism right surrounding Smash 4 that it's painful. Yeah Bayos a little toxic and yeah it's being cast aside for yhe shiny new game, but overall competitive Smash 4 had a good run and I think I'm going to remember it fondly.

This would be my guess as well. Shadow and Skull Kid's missing ATs are still suspect, and I don't think Skull Kid will be a boss. Incineroar and Ken for obvious reasons. And then Geno just seems like the popular choice for a SE rep

Honestly, I think Smash 4's entire run cycle was just players who "think they're good" but once they pick up Melee, they're left squandering what to do, and if something like Meta Knight came along? Complain and whine, and look where it's gotten us, EVO Grand Finals baybeeeeee.
Hot Take: The only good player was ZeRo, because he could actually play Melee and PM, too.

Honestly Melee itself is gonna be the Melee killer.

The skill ceiling is too insurmountable for new players to even try to compete, and top players will eventually leave due to "aging out" or losing interest. We've seen it most recently with Armada. Time is Melee's own worst enemy more so than any other game.

Melee fans love Melee for it's gameplay and Fox memes, not roster count. Ultimate's gameplay is different then Melee's, so some people will still prefer that game.

I didn't mean to throw any shade at Melee or its community with my last post, for the record.

Geno just screams DLC-hype material to me. I can imagine him being teased like how Mewtwo was in SSB4.
