Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

And here I am thinking that Pokemon just can't work as an open world game.

The game was worth it to me just for the ability to play as Marx, Doroach, and upcoming Taranza

Before we talk about Smash again, I'd like to detail all the stuff so far that is known about Pokemon Gen 8.

  • Back in September 2018, last month, Game Freak hired for a "Planner" and "Motion Designer." Duties for those positions included “planning and creating specifications for a new RPG (consumer game) development project”, whilst applicants must've needed “experience with creating highly strategic game systems”. If this doesn't reinforce the fact this game isn't gonna be a Let's Go case and have a deep, intricate battle system, I don't know what will.
  • Game Freak themselves assured that Gen 8 won't be a Let's Go scenario.
  • From a Famitsu interview with Ishihara: "It is not an entry game, but a game that we want longtime fans of the Pokemon series to look forward to." So nowhere near close to the Pokemon game we're getting this year. "The game will give a good understanding of what an evolved Pokemon game looks like after it has continued to succeed the traditions of Game Freak. We want to make Pokemon fans say 'this is what I've been waiting for' by delivering a brand-new product packed with gameplay elements and plenty of new Pokemon to encounter."
  • I can't remember the direct source, but I could've sworn from multiple people that have said that Pokemon Gen 8 has been in the works before the Switch itself was announced back in October 2016.
  • Usual release date will be during the Holidays, so most likely November 2019.

Say what you will about Game Freak, but I don't think Ishihara himself would lie about all of this, ESPECIALLY when this has been in the works near the end of Breath of the Wild's development and mid-development of Mario Odyssey for about 3 years, at this rate. They've practically been betting every stake in their company on these games, and they've paid off in spades, so Pokemon Gen 8 I feel will follow in line with the two previously mentioned.

I think it could if they changed the game to a monster hunter like game where you can capture some monsters and use them as your partners but ultimately control the human character attacking monsters

My question about Gen 8 is.... how are they going to implement the Ultra Beasts?

Like, I LOVED the Ultra Beasts, but, they're REALLY bizarre, even for Pokemon's standards.

The way they did it in USUM was perfect where you just 'went' to their homeworlds.... Are we going to have an ayylmao invasion in every Pokemon generation postgame from this point onwards?

I think they could be added to the eventual Gen 4 remakes without a problem in the least

It's an interesting question to be sure. They'll probably just ultra space treatment-'em, like let us go into some dimensional rift to catch them or something.

Or they could just hand them out like candy via events, like the legendary events going on this year.

Some Ultra Space trainer will trade them to you in post game.
Either that or you can only get them through Pokemon Bank.

Based on the past two generations, I wouldn't be surprised if it's just another Hoopa Rings/Ultra Wormholes situation like the other past Legendary Pokémon.

I'm actually kind of curious about the homeworlds of the ultra beasts because the pokedex for USUM seems to imply the Ultra Beasts are one of the most common Pokemon in their worlds. If they are common, what would a rarer pokemon be like? Do they have legendaries that could make Mewtwo and Rayquaza look like chumps?

I wouldn't be so quick to assume that they're necessarily looking for someone to work on the next Pokémon games, especially since they should be far into development at this point, not to mention they're always working on smaller titles as we just recently saw:

Speaking of which, I need to finally order my Xurkitree plush before they get bought out.

Pheromosa got bought out and now she's like 100 bucks on Amazon.

I'm happy with the Rowlet plushie I got. So cute <3

I'd love an Alola Raichu plushie but I can't justify spending much on plushies

I like the older plushes more than the new ones.

I like the chibi-esque style of them.

Just curious. Why? (cuz in my dream it works perfectly :p)
Pokemon's progression and level system don't really lend themselves to an open world.

The entirety of Pokemon's evolution, growth, moves and such are all designed on linear progression. Like, some Pokemon are objectively better than others. If the game is open world, what's stopping the player from stacking the deck, so to speak, and just throwing themselves at powerful Pokemon until they happen to catch it by chance, immediately after they start and then trivializing game balance in general.

BotW prevents this by having the same reward no matter what, or the reward never being too powerful to crush the progression of the player. Pokemon's problem is better solved by having more extra side paths, postgame and harder extra trainers then just going full open world. Give places to explore that only give rare Pokemon or items, or maybe just some tiny bits of lore or character development to find.

To me its like suggesting Metroid, Star Fox or F-Zero go open world. It shows a lack of understanding of the main elements of the series.

I just had a great laugh at the 'leak' with Zeraora as an Echo of Lucario. Not because it's bad (Lucky/Educated guess more than anything) but IF it was true, it fits with the box theory perfectly.
Zeraora on the other side next to Lucario
Incineroar in the blank spot with Isabelle...

That just made me laugh a little bit.

EDIT: Imagine there was a dual reveal with those Pokemon and right after that the box was updated with Zeraora and Incinerator.
Explained better down below.

I had a Pikachu figure all the way back from the Pokemon 2000 movie. my dog chewed it up
I also stole a friend's Ancient Mew TCG card when I was like 10 and then when he figured out I had it I ripped it up so nobody else could have it if I couldn't.

I mean, it still doesn't, since Geno and Ken are there as well, so it'd kill the box.

My thoughts exactly. I don't need Pokemon of the wild or Pokemon odyssey, I just want Pokemon to be bigger with more to explore and discover.

I want a whole game set in ultra space. EVERY pokemon could look as wild and strange as the ultra beasts!

It would probably be a spinoff though.

I actually really want to see an open world F-Zero game. Running around Falcon Punching the entire world as the Cap'n sounds like so much fun!

I'm still of the opinion that Town only exists because they were creating and testing out a new engine for Gen 8.

I mean...if this Meltan guy happens to be any indication for the 8th Gen...the Ultra Beasts doesn't look that bizarre in comparison. xD Or maybe that's just me.

F-Zero especially shouldn't be open world.

So... you want Pokemon Odyssey? Cause that's really what you're describing here.
Nope. Think of it this way.
in Pokemon you usually travel through routes to get to cities to fight gyms, right? All I want is for those routes and forests and cities and whatever to be bigger, with a sidequest here and there. Not a huge sandbox collection game, just more to esplore.

I should have specified. Laughing to much.
Say we get a dual reveal with those two Pokemon and later they show the box afterwards updated with them on it stating 'This bundle will be available for purchase at the release date.'
Sorry for a poor explanation, but the idea was to fast in my mind.

EDIT: Also sleepy time. Goodnight boards! Hopefully something interesting happens in the next hours before I wake.
