Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Perhaps, but if Sakurai's taught us anything it's that dreams come true.
Never give up hope, it's always darkest before the dawn, there's a rainbow around every corner, [insert inspirational quote here].
He ain't even gonna be in Ultimate every Paper Mario dream I have has been crushed
But hey

At least we got the classics fellas

Ohhh, you guys are talking about Let's Go aren't you? Well, I don't blame you for having that view. It does look like a low effort Pokemon game that didn't really need to exist. Isn't that game a spinoff thought?
Nope, it's a mainseries title and Pokemon company said if it does good they'll make more games for it

For a spin-off, they're pushing it especially hard. Don't know of any Pokemon spinoffs with 2 different versions.

It's gone the route of super casualization in an attempt to normie bate and get rid of the hardcore fanbase
"Attempting to get rid of the hardcore fanbase".
...Yet they've stated WAY before that the next mainline Pokemon game is coming and this is just a way to convert GO Players into full-on trainers, in what practically is Nintendo's smartest business move of all time.

Paper Mario TTYD is my favorite game ever made, so I'm just kind of refusing to even entertain the concept of a return to the classic formula.
It's a dream.
It'll happen. We're getting things we've dreamed of having - if you asked me we would have the PERFECT method of Virtual Console, I'd slap you first, then ask how do I refund all of my Wii Points I spent and money spent on my Wii U, then apologize for slapping you it was just a love tap, I swear.

With just a couple of changes I wouldn't have even minded the game. But it seems like they are making decisions just to push me away from it

Uhh you're very misinformed. Game Freak posted on Twitter right after the direct that the main line series (Gen 8) Pokemon games are coming out in 2019, CLEARLY differentiating them from the spinoffs LGPE. If LGPE were NOT confirmed to be spinoffs then I'm sure they'd have even worse reception then they already do. If LGPE were main series then I'd probably quit pokemon. The hope of gen 8 coming is the only thing keeping me from completely middle fingering the franchise.

It's a dream.
Thousand-Year Door is a definite top 5 of all time for me. Half of the stuff I want in Smash appeals to my 'gaming history is important' side (Battletoads, Doom Slayer, L-Block [no seriously]), the other just wants my favorite games getting some love. Pikmin (2 in particular) is already about as well represented as it could be, but some Wario World content would be fantastic (gimme that Greenhorn Forest theme), Paper Mario would be really cool (probably not as much for me as it would be for you), and anything Okami might make me go into a coma.

As a Metroid fan I've been more than satiated, but as a Kirby fan I hold out hope for Bandana Dee (or maybe someday Dark Matter).

Man, I love Nintendo. God, I love Smash Brothers.

So, guys, who do you think is the most ridiculous, funniest character ever to be suggest to Sakurai in terms of being added into a Smash game?

Goku?
Shrek?
Spongebob?

Or someone else? I apologize if something like this was posted before.
I once saw someone suggest captain Kirk and spock as an ice climbers style team character.

Smash Ultimate has the potential to unseat TTYD as my favorite game of all time.
Honestly, it probably will, too.

I'm gonna be a happy fella.

The most confusing thing to me is how absolutely childish it is.
Yes I know Pokemon is for kids but it was always meant to be enjoyed by everyone, and it always had a slight feeling of maturity to it.
Now this game is meant to convert Go players into the series, fine whatever. What are most Go players? Young adults.
A young adult isn't gonna want to use a Pikachu with a move called "Splishy Splash", or an Eevee with "Buzzy Buzz", are they?
It doesn't make any sense to me.

Same for me with Pikmin 2. I've sworn up and down nothing could usurp it as my favorite for about 11 years now, Okami doesn't even really come close, but Ultimate looks OVERWHELMINGLY good.

I’m not a young adult and I’d use either of those examples

El ****ing wrongo.

Evidence now.
Gamefreak said the main series has been separated into two series.
The "main series" consisting of everything under the sun including Pikachu and Eevee, and the "main core series" consisting of the generational games like
X and Y, Sun and Moon, etc.

...that makes no sense.

Main series encompasses everything? Even Gardevoir Hentai Simulator 2k19??? If that's the case why the **** make that delineation between core series and main series at all? Just call the core series "main series" and everything else "spinoffs" because that's what they are.

...but I digress. That's a really minor thing to be griping on and as long as Let's Go Get A Root Canal Because It's More Fun Than Playing Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee is not considered core, i.e. the direction the entire franchise is heading, then I'm ok with that, no matter WHAT they choose to call it.

If I remember correctly, Pokemon themselves only said "an all-new core series RPG title is coming in the second half of 2019", likely being the new gen, while also stating that LGPE are main series games.

I don't mean everything everything, stuff like Mystery Dungeon and Gale of Darkness are still spin-offs.
But Main series means X and Y, Sun and Moon, and Pikachu and Eevee. While Main Core series just means stuff like X and Y, Sun and Moon, etc.

Let me put it this way; they're remakes of Yellow, Main Series games. Why wouldn't these be main series? Besides the fact they said so. Another way to look at it is one set is the main storyline games, which are the usual 8 gym leaders, etc. While the other games still fit into the story, but don't follow the same core gameplay design. Which is likely what they meant by "core".

A lot of franchise have core games, but have other games that still are canon, but not a core game. Sonic, for instance. There's tons of non-platformers that are still part of the series, but don't fit the core gameplay of being a platformer. Whether you want to call them spin-offs or not is irrelevant. There's non-canon and canon spin-offs. Canon spin-offs are part of the main series, basically.

Hope this explains the reasoning behind it better. It does make sense, it's just a really weird way to say it.

Reference my earlier post, they've now done this inane new naming system where they call any Pokemon game ever "main series" and the games we're used to "core series."

What would supremely anger me is if LGPE were THE pokemon switch games...representative of what Game Freak was expecting us to buy into for the new platform.

But no, they're simply spinoffs *cough* I mean """main series""" and the core series is coming in 2019. That is all I need to know to give me relief.

It makes sense that they're main series, if they were spin offs no one would be complaining because no one would be scared that Pokemon Go mechanics will be part of the next games.

You don't have to go that far, at around 3:15 they say it's a mainseries game
Oh I didn't even see that haha

I guess there's some difference between "core" and "mainline" apparently? I don't see the difference. LGPE are the same as FRLG, HGSS, and ORAS. They're remakes, still part of the main series. The only difference is the whole Go mechanic, which is putting a sour taste in some people's mouths (I'm not a fan of Go anymore, but from a marketing/strategy perspective it makes sense why they're putting these games out before Gen 8).

Honestly. What the hell is the difference between core and main? They're interchangeable to me? Is there actual evidence of Gamefreak naming stuff this way or what?

It means that going forward there will be normal Pokemon games and Let's Go games. Let's Go games have different mechanics and aren't part of the current Pokemon timeline so that's why they're separate.

One has the same basic gameplay. The other is way more varied.

Core: Basic gameplay
Other: Way different gameplay options, but is still part of the main story

I guess I can understand that. It's a bit strange indeed but I guess they're grouping the games into three bins...

- non canon, non main series "spinoffs"
- canon, main series "spinoffs"
- canon, core series, aka "the main games"

It's a bit disconcerting LGPE is in the second category, and any Go mechanics/dumbing down of the core series will make me insta boycott Gen 8. But I hope they'll keep the casuals/Go people happy with peddling LGPE like games and keep the core fans happy with games like what we're used to for core.

The difference is probably they want to turn the Let's Go games into their "Main" series and just produce a "core" game every once in a while to shut up the "core" audience.

Is... this distinction relevant to anything?

Like, even to Pokemon, must less Smash?
