if Kencineroar is revealed together next week, the box theory is pretty much dead, unless for some insane reason Sakurai is deciding to release the last two roster members TWO MONTHS in advance.

If there's one reveal then box theory could still be correct, but won't be 100% confirmed because they could reveal 3 or more fighters later on.

I mean, if we get the last Smash Direct this coming week, then no, not really.


I really think we need to stop considering December in calculations here. The game comes out the first week of December, and theoretically, everything SHOULD be known long before then.


Both October and November are fine times to dump the last reveals.

So will this newcomer reveal finally decide the fate of Music Theory?

More importantly, it will decide if Box/Card theory are all that's left of the remaining roster. Only way Box/Card theory live on without the final roster being revealed is if they just casually drop Ken on the blog or something. Otherwise we're getting Kencineroar being revealed and a statement of them being the final base newcomers or not, or we get a completely different newcomer revealed instead, showing there's more beyond those two.

As much as I do actually like Incineroar and want him in the game, I would also like any old random Pokemon newcomer just to see everyone flip the crap out.

I know that a lot of Sceptile's support was based off of the flawed logic of rounding out the starter types, but man, I'd really love it if ballot support managed to get him into the game anyway. At this point chances don't look so great for him, but a tiny part of me is still hoping he'll get in as DLC.

And I won't lie, Steven's Theme gave me a little bit of irrational hope.

Nintendo needs time to actually advertise the finished product.

If you’re aiming to reveal every fighter prior to release, you won’t wait until December first. Despite the way we talk about the Smash, the average person who will buy it doesn’t visit forums and doesn’t follow news or keep up to date on it.

They need at least half a month to do that, if not longer. I’d guesstimate a Direct coming starting next week-mid November at the latest.

Really, I've never understood' why' a Direct in October was such an odd thing to people.

By next week, we'll be under 60 days until launch, quite possibly under 50 by the time we get a Direct announced.


When people say "There's still two months left!".... really, no.

The game NEEDS to have its entire roster known before December comes out to avoid any leaks, and the Prima guide, NA SE Box, and the EU SE Box will most assuredly go to printing soon.


The sooner the final reveals get, well, revealed, the less likely they are to 'leak'.

Yoshi in odyssey was cool and all, but being unable to ground pound with him due to the controls just felt unnatural to me. I kept accidentally trying to do it only to just jump out.

They should fix that if they make an Odyssey 2. Maybe even make Yoshi into a mount instead of a capture again if that's what it takes. Or maybe even his own separate character.

I think if it's left ambiguous as to whether or not the roster is finished, then there is still probably more. But I feel like Sakurai would let us know when he's done revealing characters.

It wasn't this rampant during Wii U, and I feel like Vergeben ruined a lot; I'll puke if I hear Ken, Incineroar and box one more time, and those reveals are going to be more mundane than Isabelle's at this point.

Reminder, that article was written about two weeks in advance from when it came out, so by next week, Isabelle will have been out an entire MONTH, and if she had been revealed when she was supposed to be, it would have been a month and a week.

Eh, kind of a nitpick, but yes I'd like to see Yoshi utilized more in an Odyssey sequel...

I think what did it in for me was that unlike a lot of captures, he actually borrowed a lot of Mario's moves, so it ended up feeling like he should have the full arsenal. He even did that little thing where he stuck out his hands when he ran.

If I played that game more I probably would have gotten used to it but collecting Moons started to feel like a chore to me so I didn't.

Literally the only thing that debunks the box is characters beyond a total of 2. That’s literally it.

I’d like to see it happen, but we won’t know it until we see it happen in base roster.

In other news, something to keep in mind is that news has come to us in spans of usually 2 months...we’ll Smash Directs anyway.

June—> August —> October —> December

December wouldn’t be needed because the game would be out by the 7th. October being the last reveal with nothing in November wouldn’t necessarily be out of the question, in my opinion. It may sound weird that nothing else would be revealed, but if the roster is known and there’s only 2 months until we have the literal game in our hands, then that should be more hype than anything else.

Unless, of course, you’re not excited for the game itself.

Yes if Kencineroar are all that's left, prior to their reveal Sakurai is going to say something to the effect of "here are your final new challengers" (just like prior to Bayonetta's reveal in Smash 4) or afterward something to the effect of "that is the entire roster". If they get revealed and no such statement is made, then there's going to be at least one more non-Echo newcomer.

The last time this happened, Isabelle was shown shortly after.

It could mean nothing, but with the Playlist also being updated it makes a Smash announcement more likely.

I think what did it in for me was that unlike a lot of captures, he actually borrowed a lot of Mario's moves, so it ended up feeling like he should have the full arsenal. He even did that little thing where he stuck out his hands when he ran.

If I played that game more I probably would have gotten used to it but collecting Moons started to feel like a chore to me so I didn't.

He seemed like the good old Yoshi I know, but also had that impressive wall latch move. He had the flutter and his eating abilities (which holy **** it got an upgrade). The only thing he DIDN'T have was the eggs (which is a reasonable thing to leave out considering the limited time you have my boi) and the ground pound...

I’m intrigued. It’s been a month, so I’m not too interested in the ‘New’ tag disappearing, but them changing the video list is interesting. I’m not expecting anything, but let’s see...

I am hoping for a 50-facts closer to release, so I don’t know if a random drop and that are gonna happen, but we never know...

2. Final Smash Direct next week: Sakurai tells us this is it, reveals everything. Boom, speculation is done until DLC or some sort of miraculous surprise that he never told us about anyway. Will kill or confirm the box theory.

3. Smash Direct next week, but it announces something else in November: Reveals a few characters, possibly saving another for later. Would probably kill the box theory, as 1 character each direct (1 being an echo) makes little sense, imo.



I'm inclined to think its not 2, only because Sakurai's comments last week specify that the "rate" will slow, meaning that you have to have more than 1 event to reveal characters and "slow down the rate significantly". If the final direct is next week, there's no reason to make that comment. At least 1 and 3 allow for more information.

You gotta remember that Sakurai's statement will have been made, by next week, an entire month ago at this point; the Famitsu column wasn't written an entire day beforehand.


I legit could see us get 1 character, 1 echo, and them announcing the first batch of DLC characters, showing off the progress on one ala Mewtwo.


Mind you, we ONLY got two characters in 50 facts, not counting Mewtwo, so "Two reveals+DLC" is not that absurd when the biggest Smash Direct ever only had two characters.

Last time it was removed about 10 days before the intended air date for the Direct. It wasn't two weeks.

It would also be debunked by only one character being revealed if it's anyone but Ken, as the final reveal is going to be a non-Echo newcomer with a full trailer, so there would have to be at least one more non-Echo newcomer left in that scenario. So really the next reveal is going to make or break the box, unless they just casually drop Ken somewhere.

Definitely make Yoshi a separate character, I’d love to see that.
