I wonder why so many Pokemon fans are saying "Pokemon is dead!" and "Pokemon isn't good anymore!" in light of recent generations. X and Y I can understand, but why do some people hate Sun and Moon, as well as Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon?

The biggest issues I hear about SM is the heavy use of cutscenes and the tutorials being a bit much. The latter does get conflated with the former at times, but I can see how it would be grating to someone if they like replaying the games as there's no way to skip over them, so you're stuck seeing the same thing over and over and no matter how much you enjoy it the first time you can get tired of it if you just want to get to the gameplay. It also has some other issues brought up like the pacing being off once you get to Poni, and some of the characters and new mechanics being underutilized, but the cutscenes tend to be the biggest deterrent that I've seen.

USUM I feel is where the biggest backlash against the generation happened though. It doesn't fix some of the major issues people did have with SM, it changes little about the original games in an environment that has DLC with more content being sold for less, and it follows B2W2, which did far more to separate itself from its own predecessors. For many, it's a lukewarm note to end a region on, and that probably bled into Gen 7 as a whole taking a hit in popularity as it split opinions on it even further.

The new pokemon games cater to children too much before gen 6 It didn't cater to children that much after gen 5 pokemon games got lowkey more brain dead I still love pokemon and always will but Gen 5 was the peak of Pokemon for me

A lot of the story and lore was just neat. Type: Null being created to fight the UBs, UBs existing in general, the Tapu being guardian deities. It all felt connected. We may have all seen the "twist villain" coming but she and Guzma are definitely some of Pokemon's better villains over the years until USUM came and rewrote one of them. The implication that she was driven mad by Nihilego's neurotoxin is another great example of the UB tying the game's lore together.Now that I think about it, I don't think I remember seeing as many people complain about SM until USUM came along. I guess that having to sit through that same story a second time without the ability to skip cutscenes made people look back at SM's story in a negative light.

As an huge defender of SM, I'll agree that USUM was a huge disappointment. I fell like the handholding is overstated though, it's only bad in the opening bit and just feels like it's holding your hand later because the game is already so linear and story driven to begin with.

I do agree Sun and Moon brought a lot to the table and changed up the formula significantly in a way I liked. I have a conspiracy that Game Freak rushed vanilla Sun and Moon for the 20th anniversary and if they had more time/released Ultra as the first versions, I am of the opinion that), people would love gen 7 a lot more. I think ultra's laziness is what made people look back on the gen as a whole in a somewhat negative light, like you said.

Sun and Moon were rather groundbreaking and yet kept a lot of series conventions the same. Ultra was the pinnacle of cheap, lazy, and uninspiring game design and wasted so much potential. For hardcore fans like myself, who *needed* tutors and a better way to catch legendaries/ultra beasts, Ultra was necessary. But to say I was pleased with the final product is a lie.

In the case of Let's Go, I see what Game Freak is going for in trying to bring in the casual crowd and get Go people to buy a switch for when gen 8 comes. For me, personally, however, I have seen absolutely nothing to convince me to buy the games and am going to hold out for 2019. I really hope 2019 is a major shake up (open world, breath of the wild like Pokemon game is what I'm looking for), and if they make a game that looks like it still belongs on the 3ds I'll be pissed. Thank God let's go is a spinoff because if THAT is where they were going to take the overall series...oooooof.

I think people largely hate gen 6 because it was braindead easy. I think it's a combination of older players naturally being better at beating a game and the base games themselves being easier. X was easy but I loved its aesthetic and atmosphere. OR was so incredibly boringly easy to me, though; absolutely the worst remake. And that comes from a Gen 3 fan.

Pokemon games across the board have absolutely no sense of challenge any more. Even USUM, which was a bit more difficult than Sun and Moon, was a largely painless experience for me san Ultra Necrozma, which I ended up cheesing through anyway. I really hope 2019 makes things more exciting and a bit more challenging to go through instead of constantly catering to little kids. Sure little kids play the games, but that doesn't mean making the entire experience boring for everyone.

Considering that it may just be 1.5 to 2 years apart, it may just be.

I'm hoping that it goes back to its roots, not in the Genwunner sense, but in the exploration sense. Be able to do whatever in whatever order you want. It's like that one recent Pokemon ROM hack that was really clever in letting you do gyms in any order and having difficulty go up per gym defeated.

The Black Hole item may not be labled as a Kid Icarus item, but it's very clearly taken from the Black Hole power from Uprising. It functions exactly the same way.

It'd really help if they made it more clear that the Exp is supposed to be used as a difficulty setting. SM has a number of challenging moments if you keep it turned off.

Although I don't understand what's so difficult about them putting a difficulty setting in the menu instead. Because it breaks immersion or something?

I wouldn't want a smash announcement there any way. I want to know that I can prepare for a dedicated direct where we'll learn the news is coming, not just have Steve be sprung on us out of the blue.
