Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Gah, this is the frustrating thing about being the Yoshi fan that I am. I bet Yoshi actually IS that popular, but I'm the wrong person to make that claim...
Then make your case. The case I make is that Yoshi has nowhere the legacy that some other characters have and is not as recognisable to an older person the same way that Mario, Pikachu, DK, Sonic and Pac-Man are.

The most well-known characters in Smash are definitely Pikachu, Pac-Man, Mario, Sonic and Mega Man.
Mega Man doesn't belong there. DK has a massive arcade legacy that's perpetuated by the Country series (which sells better than Mega-Man, Yoshi, Pac-Man and modern Sonic) and his near perfect attendance in any Mario spin-off. There is no comparison. Everyone and their Grandma knows DK.

I keep asking this, so I apologize, but what camera in this modern era takes a picture that crappily? It's not blurred from movement, so they obviously took it standing still, but it the quality looks like something out of the 90's.

And why are they always so close up that you only see it and nothing else; like we can't see what TV its on, or the console itself....like it its taken that close so that people can't see the computer screen it was taken on.

Its 2018, there's no excuse for these poor quality shots. Here's the ESRB leak for comparison:

Notice how the quality doesn't look like it was taken during a hurricane while on a boat during the apocalypse as the Tazmanian Devil chases you with the intent to eat you alive.

Even this one:

This is the picture you get when you take one of a computer or TV screen. Notice the quality is still good; not garbage. There's no excuse for these picture leaks; absolutely no reason they should look as awful as they do. That's why I can't believe that Ken leak. I mean, why don't we just believe this while we're at it:

So what characters do yall expect to see only as DLC??
I'll continue to support Spring Man, even if it means waiting until after the base game is released.

Peach and Bowser I'd agree. As someone who's almost as much of a fan of Luigi as much as my boi though, I can say he's shafted a lot due to the close association with his brother...
Actually, despite the saying that he's always living in his brother's shadow, I think Luigi's close association Mario usually helps him.

You can't have the "Mario Bros." without Mario's younger brother.

It was more on "general recognition," which is why I said I'm not the right person to make the claim, because any proof I'd give of people knowing who Yoshi is would just be chalked up to bias

You can't steal a character slot if Sakurai never considered that Characters.
There no "slot" just Sakurai choosing characters he want with the time he have.

I thought Sonic in brawl proved that since thanks to him TLink/Wolf/Jiggly became reality
You can steal a character slot.
We know Bowser Jr was almost cut from Sm4sh, as the last added. Who did he beat out?
In Brawl we know Jigglypuff, Sonic, Wolf, and Toon Link were the final four added, taking place of the forbidden seven.

I kinda want to say K.Rool stole the spot of Dixie, but I guess he deserved it... -_-
Not really, based on what we know and how she's currently the third most likely echo after Ken and Shadow with a significant power gap following. Diddy and Dixie were originally planned as a tag team ala Ice Climbers in Brawl but mooshing two characters that weren't totally identical proved to be a huge technical hurdle, leaving Dixie on the cutting room floor and then she was basically MIA in Smash 4 because she wasn't relevant when development started in 2012. Now she's relevant again and people aren't sawing their wrists over the idea of new clone characters given how well received Doc's return and Lucina's addition in Smash 4 were. This all said, her being an echo or even a semi-clone are fairly strong for the base roster, nevermind the impending DLC this game will have.

Mega Man is kind of a stretch, and this is coming from someone who likes Mega Man
Agreed, Mega Man is kinda like Banjo & Kazooie, a big deal to get in Smash due their Nintendo origins, but not that big of character outside of context

Mappy's Whistle looking identical to the one in the character montage from E3 (with Pac-Man) is making me think it's real.
This is one good argument for it being real.

And overall, Ken's model looks similar to Ryu's model in terms of art style. Some parts look a bit off but that can be attributed to the image's poor quality.

To be fair, those screenshots don't exactly scream quality either and as I said before, the Ken image doesn't seem to be taken from a screen but from a printed image. Could be from a magazine, strategy guide or something else.

I don't see any artifacts that give away it's from a screen, which the ESRB leak screens do have. Those alongside with the more washed out colors that often happen when scanning or taking a photo of a printed image are a big giveaway that this image doesn't originate from a screen.

I'm cautiously on team real on this one for now.

You certainly don't see DK in the mainstream market as much though, Mega Man is everywhere and even got animated series in the past.
He also has the advantage of being confused with Astro Boy which is more common than one might initially think.

I hadn't considered a printed image...but still, scanning is pretty accurate, so if it was scanned, then uploaded, the quality would be much better than what that is. And I feel like if the leaker did have some sort of access to a printed format, the picture quality still would have been better. That looks like something off of an old CRTV

What do you mean, you don't see him in the mainstream market as much? When has Mega Man ever been mainstream and what possible thing has he done that compares to the mainstream saturation of the original arcade game that even spawned Mario? Mega Man has never been a mainstream commercial success, and using an animated series isn't a good argument for that given Donkey Kong also has one.

As for being confused with a popular mainstream character...hmm...

The problem with that Ken is the lighting and shading, it simply doesn't fit with the rest of Ultimate's style.

Also, TIL, "lighting" and "lightning" are actually written differently, I thought it was just one spelling for both words before, huh.

"As much"
DK is still there, he just isn't as prominent.

Also, I really don't consider that DK animated series because... seriously, who heard of it before the memes?

I uh

I kinda watched it a bit when I was younger I think.
I have vague memories about it, blissfully unaware about how absurd it was.

I don't buy it at all. The angle on the background looks off, and he looks like he's been photoshopped, especially when you look at the lighting on his muscles and gi. Speaking of which, his gi has rounder edges that Ryu's, especially where it opens.

If someone tried to sell this as his CSS render then maybe, but no way that's his in-game model.

With worms I have also idea in my mind

I'd like to have Alex from Street of Rage, Jim from Earthworm Jim, The dude from Comix Zone (Sketch Turner if I remember his name right ?) oh and why not Ristar and Alex Kidd.

Also NiGHTS can be a good second rep for Sega.
Gilius Thunderhead from Golden Axe tho
While characters can't technically "steal" a spot, there are a few who basically kill the chances of other characters ever getting on the roster.

Take Pokemon for example. If your Gen VII favorite doesn't get added in this game, I can almost guarantee you that it'll never have a decent shot at getting in Smash ever again. It's a sad thing to admit, but it's true. The franchise keeps moving forward at breakneck speed, leaving very little time to look back at anything in the past (save for Gen I, which stays relevant no matter how hard we try to ignore it).

By the way,
> :ultisabelle:
Which is why I actively want Incineroar now. Sun Moon got me back into pokemon and I loved a lot of the new pokemon. So while Iñcineroar isn't my favourite, I really want a rep for that generation. We already have deciduey in Pokken, so Incineroar seems a good fit for Smash instead.

Atleast if he is in, I actually get a rep I actually want instead of a rep that I always thought should be in (ridley, k rool, I wanted them since Melee. But not because I am a massive fan of them. Just that they should be in)

Consider the idea that the image could be very small, maybe one part of a larger printed ad, and that the leaker may have taken a photo of that section of the page. This would explain both the low resolution image and the faded colors that seem a bit indicative of a CMYK print.

The problem with that Ken is the lighting and shading, it simply doesn't fit with the rest of Ultimate's style.

Also, fyi, "lighting" and "lightning" are actually written differently, I thought it was just one spelling for both words before, huh.
Imo, I think the lighting actually matches quite well with the lighting on Moray Towers. It's coming from the same direction and has the same soft blue ambient fill light on the shadows.

I feel like this Ken leak is real, and people are looking for reasons for it to be “fake”.

As Ike would say, “Prepare yourself!” Smash spoilers potentially incoming!

(Really though, this seems real to me.)

DK is drastically more well known than Mega Man

The most famous characters in order are probably:
Mario
Pac-Man
DK
Pikachu
Sonic
Luigi/Peach/Bowser
Link
Duck Hunt Duo

Funny you should use THAT image to claim Ken's gi is smoother.

Because....

I might disagree.

Someone I saw tried use Mappy to prove it was fake, and it ended up looking more legitimate because of it.

Think I can agree with you here (Not that I typically disagree with you, I'm just usually sarcastic about it)
I don't actually see anything wrong about the Ken picture that would outright disprove it.

Looks somewhat similar to the SSB4 trophy it’s probably real nothing is out of place I mean he looks better than he does in SF4 and 5

And SE rep now has to be someone like Lara or Sora if it’s this big
