Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Anyone asked for a Lora moveset? No? I'll do it anyway:

Team Lora Drives In!

Want unique characters? Want female characters? Weapon variety? Ice and wind and fire? She's got it all!

So basically I came up with a way to represent both of the main aspects of combat in Xenoblade Chronicles 2: The Driver/Blade relationship and Blade Combos with Lora thanks to the streamlined gameplay in the Torna expansion.
In Xenoblade 2, Drivers are the player controlled characters, and Blades are support, giving their weapon to their Driver. Attacks are divided in three: auto attacks, Driver Arts, and Specials. For Driver Arts, the Driver attacks and may inflict statuses, etc. There are Driver Art Combos, but I'll skip those for Lora. Specials fill when sufficient Driver Arts are performed, and when used, the Driver passes the weapon to the Blade so they can perform their attack. Specials come in Level I, II, III and IV. You get Level II by performing Arts when the Level I Special is ready, etc.

These specials chain up in what's called Blade Combos, I'll just paste the explanation from the wiki:

The Torna expansion changes this up. Each Special grants elemental orbs instead of having to complete the Blade Combo, and you can link all the specials in a Blade Combo regardless of their element. It also changes the way Drivers and Blades interact. Drivers have their own weapons, like Lora's Braid (functions like a whip of sorts, and she uses punches and kicks for like 90% of her attacks) and they have an element and Specials of their own, too. You cans switch the Driver for any of the two Blades they have and play as the Blade, too.

But for the moveset, I tried to incorporate a way to use a little of both systems:

Main points:
  • Team Lora fights by utilizing Lora's Braid, Jin's katana and Haze's staff, with Lora using her Blade's weapons for different attacks. Weapons in Xenoblade Chronicles X are made of ether and can disappear, so for any move, the weapon will flash and appear in her hands, then vanish.
  • Each of Lora's Blade attacks will grant the enemy an elemental Orb, Ice for Jin, Wind for Haze. Extremely convenient, since those two are opposing elements and break each other. The element orbs are just small orbs that orbit around the character, light blue for ice, green for wind. When a character that has a wind orb orbiting them is hit with an ice attack, the orb smashes and deals extra damage and knockback. The last Blade that grants her a weapon stays in the background like Pokemon Trainer, switches whenever Lora uses the other Blade
Now, for the moveset:

  • Jab - Standard jab using her auto attack animations: A backhanded slap, a kick and two quick punches.
  • Forward tilt - A swift kick
  • Up tilt - waves her Braid upwards in an arc, has a flame effect
  • Down tilt - a low sweeping kick, the same in her Path of Thorns art
  • Dash attack - lunges and stabs with Haze's staff (second option: a kick, third option: a slash with the katana)
  • Forward Smash: Summons Jin's katana and slashes forward, grants an ice element orb, breaks a wind orb
  • Up Smash: Spins Haze's staff overhead, grants a wind element orb, breaks an ice orb
  • Down Smash: Spins her whip around her like one of her Arts, flame effect
  • Neutral air: A Smash 64 neutral air fits her fine
  • Forward Air: Swipes with her Braid in a quick motion from up to down, has a fire effect
  • Back air: Stabs behind with Haze's staff, grants a wind element orb, breaks an ice orb
  • Up air: Swipes Jin's katana overhead like the Fire Emblem characters, grants an ice element orb, breaks a wind orb
  • Down air: Stomps, then does a swipe kick downwards that has a spike effect
  • Grab air: a tether with her Braid
  • Grab: a tether grab, holds opponents in place instead of pulling them to her, like this:

  • Pummel: Fire burns the poor character that's bound by the Braid
  • Forward throw: Lora pulls the character in and smacks them with a drop kick
  • Down throw: Lora smacks them against the ground in place and they slam upwards
  • Back throw: Pulls them in like her F throw, but lets them fly back instead of kicking them
  • Up throw: Pulls them in and punches them upwards
The specials:
  • Neutral special: Holding Jin's katana, she summons a shard of ice that stays in place and zooms forward after a moment, ice orb/breaks wind orb
  • Down special: Using Haze's staff, she summons a whirlwind around her, like Cloud's, but is a multihit move with little knockback, wind orb, breaks ice orb
  • Side special: Holding Jin's katana, she swipes it upwards and sends a shockwave running across the stage, similar to Cloud's neutral, but shorter length. Ice orb, breaks wind orb (I thought of using Haze's Talent Art here, that would be basically Witch Time, so nope)
  • Up special: Using Haze's staff she summons a whirlwind and flies upwards. wind orb/breaks ice

Final Smash: Level IV Special: Haze jumps into the stage and blasts ether around her, whoever is caught is held in place as if weakened by Haze's power and gets beat up by Jin and Lora's Level IV Special.

Other:

Victory quote: "I fight for my friends!" (Really, it's one of her level up/after battle quotes)
Idle: slaps her face and pumps herself up
Taunt: the full version of her idle in Torna

Stage: The Capital of Torna. With this as a background:

Songs:

I know she's late, obviously, but for DLC and a hypothetical ballot? She's got my vote.
This is pretty solid.

I've been trying to think a moveset for her but I hadn't sat down and thought of it. Yours is really good.

Just remember to take this thotful advice.

To get back on topic though, try to think of one additional difference you would give each echo fighter. You can only give one.
:ultdarkpit::ultlucina::ultdaisy::ultrichter::ultchrom::ultdarksamus:
Chrom's side special would become a Javelin Toss. On the ground it would be fully aimable and chargeable, but in the air it follows a predetermined arc. To compensate, the aerial variant boosts Chrom horizontally a bit, like Mewtwo's Confusion.

You'd likely know more Cloud than I, but Simon is firmly a Gryff imo. Dedicated himself to doing the right thing, carried it out to the very end. Plus...look at the damn guy. That's a genuine Chad. Serious or not, that boy's a Gryff.
He looks like a Gryff... like Ron and Neville... hmm...

No, it'll be Ridley all over again. Which I went through. Before. Multiple times.

I don't want to go through it again tyvm.
Skull Kid has been 'highly requested' for about a month.
Forgetting his lack of recurring nature, this is nothing like Ridley.
The Smash community is frighteningly terrible with these comparisons.
A single fact in common (being a villain) does not make every other aspect of the character vanish.

Pff, there's no way they'd add Hinoka to Smash. /s

Besides doesn't Waluigi already fill that void in being the next Ridley?

Speaking on Sonic. Was playing Adventure 2 earlier today and it keeps reminding me how much I miss the Adventure formula. Tired of boost gameplay. Boost formula lost its edge.

I don't care that 06 was the last Adventure style game. That style of gameplay has more potential than the current modern style.

I've brought this up before, but now that I think about it, I'd actually be fine with the box theory being true because it'd basically guarantee this leak is real.

That "history" really means nothing in the long run.

She had one game decades ago that had an average cult following. Big whoop.
What is that really worth to Sakurai/Nintendo?
I mean history does actually matter in terms of some character's inclusions. I mean even look at certain characters on the roster.
They wouldn't be here if it wasn't for their history and relationship with Nintendo.
After all, Sakurai has stated this about third parties in the past:
"Besides that, it's something like a courtesy to include a character who has the experience of being on a Nintendo platform."
It is something that he does take into consideration, barring Cloud of course.
It's just doesn't necessarily deem if a character will get in or not, but I feel it can help a character at the most.

Also, Shantae isn't in competition with other indie characters. They're from separate companies and have to be judged off their individual merits. Shantae's relationship could be considered one of those.
(Also it's like saying if Shantae got in as an Assist Trophy, Reimu's or Quote's chances instantly increased.
It doesn't work like that.

I uhh, meant in the fact that he's a character I want being reduced to a boss. Nowhere in my comment did I imply his demand was anywhere close to Ridley's, that was something you inferred.

Sorry if that annoyed you for some reason...

I loved Adventure 2 battle.... but I've never had more solo fun with Sonic than in Mania.
That game really amps up a blend of nostalgia taken modern.

I love both, I just wish we'd get an entire game that was proper boost style though. I don't particularly count Colors nor did I like it that much.

My response may have been a bit extreme...
but you said he was Ridley 2.0, and that carries quite a heavy weight.

Honestly, fix the slippery physics of Adventure 2 and bring back the aesthetic of Adventure 1 and you have, in my opinion, what could very well be the perfect 3D Sonic.

What's interesting to me is that nearly everyone who's handled Sonic that wasn't Sonic Team has pumped out at the very least, a decent Sonic game. What does that say about Sonic Team?

So read back on Sakurai's Famitsu Column on Music and litteraly the first thing he says is

"Super Smash Bros. Ultimate features over 800 songs throughout its stages and over 900 songs in total. We’re still making a few adjustments, so the final count may change, but it’s still an incredible amount of music!"

This was posted on Sept 2nd. This just gave me some hope that maybe another franchise could be represented. My last post about my music track findings made me kind of sad, but seeing that...feels good right about now.

I have quite honestly never been so disenchanted with the speculation community as this box-not-a-theory has made me.
There is absolutely no credence to the disproven before it was made theory.
Forgetting everything else, it was released after we got a character not present on the box.
I cannot recall a speculation scene for this game ever being so selective with at what is looked.
It makes me wonder if all humans are even capable of independent thought.

Mania is easily the best 2D Sonic IMO. I could never get into the 2D Sonic's before.

Generations is peak boost Sonic IMO. But now I just want that formula to go away, but they spent 3 years making the engine for Forces. I sure hope that engine is flexible.

Also I said this before but I wish Sonic had more of his gadgets in his moveset.

I still think 3&K is a better designed game than Mania but Mania is still really good.

I'd like more like the Generations boost stages, but they refuse to go back to it and it frustrates me, but hey at least modders keep doing stuff like the Unleashed Project.

Does anyone think we could get some Smash news October?
I'm pretty positive we're getting the final info dump next month. I just don't see them waiting too much longer on this, not when preload is gonna go live in November. I could very well be wrong, though. For all I know, there is no preload and they have the final Direct December 1st. Gonna have to wait and see, I suppose. :p

Yes, I do... It's when I expect Ken and Incineroar to be announced... I'd then expect a final smash Direct early to mid November, where we'll get information on the spirits mode as well as the final characters (Yeah, I don't really believe in the box theory...).

My predictions as of late have been rocky, especially after Isabelle's announcement. So while mine should have been taken with a grain of salt regardless, by now it should be taken with truckloads. Still fun, though. Based primarily off of Verg, if he's right.

36e: Dixie Kong
38e: Shadow
60e: Ken
69: Incineroar
70: Isaac
70e: Felix
71: Banjo & Kazooie
72: Geno

Still seems way too much given how little time is left. The next Direct cannot come soon enough.

104: Sun and Moon stage (Incineroar)
105: Golden Sun stage (Isaac)
106 Banjo-Kazooie stage (Banjo & Kazooie)
107: Monster Hunter stage (Rathalos assist)
108: Minecraft stage (Creeper assist)

73: Skull Kid
74: Rex & Pyra
75: ARMS rep
76: Heihachi
77: Joker
78: Crash Bandicoot
79: Dante
80: Sora
(I won't be predicting DLC echoes, even though I feel like we may get some)

TBH, any prediction that doesn't cut Incineroar sounds good to me at this point.

I think it says they need young talent with a vision to take over.

But anyways this isn't even Smash related oops lol.
