Oh man, I was gonna come in and post something endearing I experienced but then walked into box art leak discussion and only 2 characters left. Not even gonna touch that.

I’ll continue with what I was gonna post and maybe, just maybe, it’ll kind of make this situation a bit better.

Edit: I didn’t follow up to why I wanna as doing this. I was going through the Fighter section of the site and slowly scrolling down it; looking at the pics when suddenly I just felt tons of nolstagia. Especially for the Smash 64 characters. Playing it with my friends was tons of fun and really got me into the whole “I’m gonna stick with nintendo” thing. And I kept Smash up casually with each game. And I scrolled down, remembering seeing Bowser in Nintendo Power and the intially Brawl Trailer.

For those who played Smash from the very beginning and loyally continued through Melee, Brawl, Wii U and 3DS, and probably Ultimate, take a look at that roster on the site and gradually scroll down while harkening back to those days that you played Smash.

But even those who never played 64 as thier first smash game, it’s truly astounding to have a game that went from celebrating Nintendo to the world of gaming.

Bring back those memories and continue down while looking and contemplating the roster. All the additions to it. All the hype characters brought. Falcon’s first in game model appearance. Peach and Bowser. Who the hell was Mr Game and Watch, Marth, and Roy? CLONES!?! SONIC AND SNAKE?!? ROB?!? Pokémon Trainer using three Pokémon? Mega Man!! Holy crap! Rosalina! Pac-Man! I’m really feeling it! MEWTWO ROY AND LICAS!!! Ryu?!? CLOUD!?!? Bayonetta!! And finally Ridley and King K. Rool.

Regardless how this roster turns out in the end,

This roster, from the start, has always been legendary and should be an aspiration for game developers in the future. It is truly great to relive those memories.

Know I get by what Sakurai meant lol.

I guess my original post actually was appropriate for this topic. Kind of funny how that happens.

I think if Geno makes it it's gonna send ripples down social media greater than even Ridley, and even with his lack of outside popularity. Geno is a fighter who would overcome odds once thought totally impossible. His inclusion would mark how far Smash Bros. has come far more so than any other fighter, besides maybe Cloud.

If there are 72 characters total, it makes me wonder why Sakurai could not find the time give all the echos (Like Dark Pit and Lucina) special semi-clone treatment.

Considering Sakurai is built off of Smash 4's game system to get everyone in that game back in Ultimate, if he was only going to add a few, he should have spent the time to distinguish the echos he had.

IDK, it is just something that I find particular odd that gets me skeptical of the box theory. I guess 65+ characters plus all the careful balancing/refining is already hard enough for Sakurai.

I really wish Sakurai gave Lucina Aether and Chrom's Final Smash.

It literally makes too much sense for Lucina to fight like her father when her father taught her how to fight. ;/

AGAIN... there is NO proof of what the other side of the box shows. STOP making it as evidence when there is NONE. You're assuming the other side is the same and calling it solid proof to go along with the theory. Good night.

The box doesn’t look like a real box. Zoom in on it. It looks perfect.

It looks like a template for designing a box. Not a box itself. As in, they could just add things or remove things digitally. It doesn’t have a shadow, doesn’t look like it actually opens and looks like the corners and seams are perfect.

Do they not use computers to design box art on a template before applying it?

Makes sense. I might just take a break from this thread like Rie Sonomura did, until we get some new info. Speculation isn't very fun when most of us are dead set on two characters and have a theory to fall back on.

Please look at the side of the box. People have been discussing it on twitter, but missing the significance of the ordering. Here, forgive my color-coding:

The fighters are in groups of 9, presented exactly the same as on the website and all other promotional materials. (Echoes in order, Miis and PT as single entries) The promotional images used on this box were clearly taken from a source location in which they were in sets/rows of 9.

This means we know what the other 4 sets of 9 looks like:

It's all very clean and works perfectly. With two big implications.

There is no room for an echo in any of the first 3 sets of 9. No Dixie, no Shadow, no whatever. It would throw everything off, and make the side of the box we can see look different.

But there is exactly one unaccounted for space in the final set of 9. Somewhere, there is an echo between Palutena and Cloud.

This is the other half of the box:

And of course, there is only room for one blank space after Isabelle, so that leaves one new character--possibly the Gen 7 Pokemon Vergeben alluded to.

It's always possible that this is just a box, and the product designers chose to only show off 72 character slots arbitrarily.

But realistically, it looks like this is our roster.

Incineroar is one of the more popular Pokemon to come out of Gen 7, especially in Japan, whatchu talking about? Never mind that Ken himself is one of the most iconic characters of all time.

The game has more to offer than characters, there's still a load of **** like modes we don't know about.

With this I'm going to assume there's only two characters left. And Incineroar and Ken might be all that's left. And I'm perfectly fine with that if it comes to that.

And even if I'm wrong, then the surprise will be even better.

Though I don't want to give too many people hope in case this actually turns out to be the case for the final roster. But lol imagine if there's some characters on the bottom of the box still just to screw with us.

Still, I'm going to assume there's only two left anyway just to temper my expectations now. I was already satisfied with the game's roster since E3. And there's still DLC to get to eventually. So I'm not going to be part of the doom and gloom even if this is it.

You say "a smudge easier" like it's some proven prophecy that's somehow leading to the inevitable. "What we could be looking at"? We could be looking at literally anything. It's the direct all over again. People left and right saying it's this character or that character and then it ends up being something completely different because people try to pin down what's going to happen to a tee. Unless it's the ESRB leak, by which this is no means comparable to it, nothing is proven and only relies on Gematsu's third cousin for gospel.

Looking at a possibility more than a probability here, chief. No evidence can support any inclusion of any newcomer or the quantity of it, probably because nothing is leaked about how much we're getting. That's kind of given. That's kind of a "no ****" scenario.

To be honest, it's not the same to me. While I understand where some people are coming from, there's nothing supporting the idea that the back of the box would have the OG 8, or any other claims. Those are arguments thrown around with no basis.

I'll even go a step further and show a mockup of a scenario in which the OG 8 aren't included on the sides:

It doesn't come close to lining up equally. It would take 8 to fill it in completely, and I simply don't see us getting 8 additional characters when we've been clearly told by the lead director that he "Hopes we aren't expecting as many newcomers as previous games.

Also, based on that last part...why would we be speculating on anything then? Based on what you said, everything is meaningless. You and I both know that's simply not true.

I'm personally thinking a Hoenn Pokémon may come through, especially if the newcomers are all ballot based.
I mean ORAS was still being heavily promoted around the time it came out.
It'd also make sense as to why most of Vergeben's sources can't pin down the Pokémon, only just that it is a Pokémon.

But then again, Sun and Moon marks the 20th anniversary, so TPCI could say "**** that" and slide Incineroar or an Ultra Beast Sakurai's way.

This Right here. Everyone assumes that the final character will be a big one like Geno or Isaac. If that's the Case, wouldn't The Final Smash 4 Direct have had more hype inducing characters like Isaac or Geno? And wouldn't the final Brawl character have been Sonic? All in all, i'm pretty sure the final characters are like dessert. You just had a big meal with Inkling, Ridley, Simon, And K. Rool. Then you get Some Dessert Free of charge consisting of Isabelle, Ken, and Incineroar. You would want that free dessert wouldn't you? Sakurai also used this comparison when discussing Lucina, Dr Mario, and Dark Pit, and I think it also works really well here.. So if anything, be happy. We've already be spoiled with some insane reveals... What is wrong with a couple small ones for a change?...
