Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

I was preoccupied with the New York primary and forgot about the direct until a good amount of time had passed since it aired.

Lucky enough I was able to find the Direct without hitting spoilers. I jumped around to scan through the games and missed the Isabelle reveal on the first go.

The trailer was camouflaged in. I saw the smash bundle and still did not think the corresponding trailer was initially for Smash.

Like Pokken you sya. Well I'd probably cry and then die but in a sad way
Not really. Smash's big think is that it's a platform brawler kind of game. So I was thinking of something like that, but in 3D. I was visualising a Mario Odessey type of game with fighting mechanic, if that makes any sense.

I'd like to get you guy's opinions of something that I've though about, but might not work.

So, awhile back I was scrolling through a thread that dealt with limiting the roster to 12 characters, and someone mention that this would only be possible if Smash went 3D.

Now, for some reason, I can't get the idea of what a Smash game in full 3D would be like, if it would even be possible.
What about you guys? Do you think a Smash game can be made in 3D?
At this rate, nope. It'd be WAY too much of a radical change for people. We've already been accustomed to 2.5D, 3D wouldn't smooth over well with fans.

It was a good reveal for AC Switch.

But a bad Smash trailer. It did what it had to do, but the other trailers just went above and beyond in their presentation that seeing Isabelle just... tidy up a desk...

I guess Ken could be an echo, but he would need quite a few moves changed. New Final Smash, forward smash, down throw, up air, forward tilt, new animation for his longer range focus attack. Not to mention, his special attacks like his hadouken or multi-hitting tatsu would probably be implemented.

Honestly I see him being more like a Ness > Lucas situation, but maybe that could still fit under the definition of echo.

I never played Street Fighter but from what I hear isn't Ken literally the original and first Echo Fighter in gaming history?

So I wanted to bring up Mii costumes again.

Top row: Skull Kid (Possible Playable Character), Megaman X (Final Smash Asset), Protoman (Final Smash Asset), Dunban (Final Smash Asset), Isabelle (Playable Character), Heihachi (Possible Playable Character)

Second Row: Akira/Jacky (Possible AT's/Unconfirmed), Zero (AT), Megaman Exe (Final Smash Asset), Inkling (Playable Character), K. Rool (Playable Character), Flying Man (Stage Asset)

Third Row: Chrom (Playable Character), Lloyd (Possible Playable Character), KK Slider (Possible Echo for Isabelle now/Unconfirmed), Toad (Peach asset), Viridi (Stage Asset), Hunter (Unconfirmed/Rathalos/Possible Playable Character), Chocobo (Unconfirmed/Possible AT)

Final Row: Geno (Possible Playable Character), Takamaru (AT), Ashley (AT), Gil (Unconfirmed, Possible AT or Playable Character), Tails (Unconfirmed, Possible Echo or Semi-clone, Possible AT), Knuckles (AT)

As you can see, the majority of the costumes are SOMETHING in Ultimate. It's very likely that nearly all of these have some form of presence in the game. Of these: Skull Kid, Heihachi, Lloyd, Slider, Hunter, Geno, Gil and Tails are possible playable characters. Any of these can be assist trophies as well, in addition to Chocobo, however Skull Kid, Heihachi, Lloyd, Tails, and Geno are considered probably the most popular of these selections, as with Isabelle, to become fighters. What we DO know is Square is getting a second rep from Vergeben and it could be Geno, but we don't know. Additionally, we don't know if Bamco will follow this trend of 3rd party companies getting additional characters (so far they only have pac-man), but if they were and judging from these costumes, it'd be either Heihachi or Lloyd.

If I had to guess that Sakurai was still pulling from this selection, considering we got Isabelle, Inkling, K. Rool and Chrom from it already, I'd say:

-Skull Kid: First Party Villain (Zelda hasn't had a proper newcomer since melee), the only remaining first party character on this list with a strong backing.
-Heihachi/Lloyd/Gil: Bamco 3rd party (They are making the game with Sakurai and made 4. Every other 3rd party company has 2 or more characters now (counting square if Vergeben is right). Honestly any of the 3, but probably only one.
-Geno: Possible SE 3rd Party (Was a standalone Mii costume update and the only one with a title card. Sakurai loves this character. I'm going to guess the SE character is him)
-Tails: Yes, I know Shadow is more likely, but with Isabelle being revealed, I can see a Luigi-fied semi-clone as Tales for Sonic anyhow. I could even see him using his blaster. We'll see.

Tl;dr: We know many of these costumes, according to Sakurai in previous interviews, were specifically made as stand-ins for requested characters. They are specific acknowledgments to being popular, for the most part. Pay attention to them. 4 characters out of the 9 new confirmed COME from these Mii costumes.

What else would they have done with Isabelle? She's a mayor's assistant. That's what she does. It's her job in the game that she's from.

Also, it was supposed to introduce a new Animal Crossing. Which it did fairly well, I think.

It was a fine trailer, in my opinion.

Honestly it makes sense that they didn't even try to make Isabelles trailer hype like the other ones. There's no way they could've believably put her in enough action to match Ridley, Simon, or K Rool

Many Echoes have had a different Final Smash, no biggie.

Seeing Ken do the donkey kick wouldn't be out of place, given some of his kick-based supers. He never did it, but it still feels like something Ken could do.

No real need to change the moves that aren't the specials either aside from making him stand out animation-wise. Not to mention different animations is also not a hurdle for Echoes thanks to Dark Samus.

The real problem are the specials, but even then, he'd keep the same ones, except they'd be tweaked a little.

He works fine as an Echo.

If characters from franchises are going to clash in 3D, it prolly should be an adventure game like Wind Waker mixed with elements of superhero movies.

Ganondorf or some jerk could merge realms for their own gain. While heroes start forming teams, midway Mario is tricked into thinking Peach dies by the party's deeds and goes rogue. Then it turns into a horror game, where a mad plumber is out to get you and there are pipes everywhere.

Ah fair, maybe a new game then? Idk if the sales were high enough to justify it. I only played a demo of the first game but it was pretty fun, would love to play more.
No it bombed pretty hard IIRC

Don’t think it’ll ever get a sequel though I don’t think it really needs one

Just had a tiny earthquake.

I was sitting at my desk and suddenly started moving back and forth slightly. Nothing huge though like more south thankfully but still worrisome after what happened in Hokkaido. It was just a level 1 from where I’m at.

I know we're all excited that Isabelle's here

But can I just say we better get some damn Miitopia music in Smash. Regardless of your opinion on the game, there's no denying that game's got some sweet music.

Eh, they wouldn't have really had to. Duck Hunt has one of the best Smash For trailers and it has no action but seeing all those 8-bit characters burst into HD was an awesome idea. Isabelle's could've easily had Duck Hunt bring her the letter or her watching a fight on Smashville from below before getting her letter. There were plenty of good ideas for her trailer but, uh, let's just make her clean a room and get a letter from random Pete Pelican Postman. Yeah, that's all we got. It didn't have to be hype. Just creative. And creative it was not.

Good to know you're okay. Do keep you, your family and the rest of Japan safe now. That's the last thing Japan needs another tragedy of innocent losses.

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS PLEASE

I'm calling it now. Finding Mii Stage will have a plethora of Miitopia music

It just will, the game's old enough for it.

Be safe Venus we love you
Thanks. I’m perfectly fine. Tokyo seems to have had a level 3.

Sephazon Sephazon , are you in Tokyo? It was pretty weak up here in the mountains but how was it down there?

When I say levels.... keep in mind that Japan uses the Shindo scale which, unlike western scales, measures the intensity of shaking on the surface whereas the western scale uses the power released.

It seems like weather and geological activity has been getting pretty crazy. I hope everyone on the eastern seaboard is safe from this incoming hurricane.

wouldn’t really work

there were several sections that required you to look between the gamepad and TV. Unfortunate cause I loved that game and wish more people could play it

On your first point. You can play the whole of The Wonderful 101 on the Gamepad which means it could easily transfer over to Switch.

On your second point, yeah, it bombed but so did basically every game on the Wii U that didn't have Mario in the title and even then it probably didn't live up to the Mario in its name sales wise.

You guys never fail to disappoint with the NaCl levels. Isabelle's trailer was pretty good.

I have never played Animal Crossing but it felt proper and tonally consistent it would be delivered like an AC game, with text boxes and gibberish voice lines.

"The music was boring."

Yeah because Animal Crossing has such an exciting catalogue of music like...Brewster's Roost, and the theme song of the series. The song was tonally consistent with AC and Isabelle's character, just as Vampire Killer and Gangplank Galleon before it.

"Hurray, she is not an echo."

But she is still a clone. Her moveset shares concepts with Villager.

Neutral B, Up B, Dash Attack, Final Smash and grab are the same. Mobility seems equally as piss poor as Villager's. Size and idle animations are similar.

Same concept, different function:

> Down Smash doesn't bury
> Up Tilt is not multihit
> Up Smash isn't a multihit either

Things that are radically different:

> Side B fishing rod which is unlike anything in Villager's kit
> Down B plants a Lloid that goes upwards
> Nair is more like Ice Climbers'
> FSmash doesn't spawn a lingering projectile

I sure am glad Geno and Skull Kid are confirmed. The ballot and the chairs validate my thoughts.

Continuing the trend of my ask you guys a boatload of questions, what are favorite games from some of you're favorite series?
For Me:
Legend of Zelda: Breath of The Wild. This game was an absolute blast to play. It truly felt like the next big step for the Zelda series.
Metroid: Prime. I loved this game's atmosphere, exploration and music. It's awesome, but Super Metroid and Samus Returns are close seconds.
Metal Gear Solid: MGS 2. I think this is an usual pick for MGS, but still I though was the most interesting out of the first 3 MGS games.
Xenoblade Chronicles: XC2. Damn the artsyle complaints, I freaking loved this entry in the Xenoblade series.
