Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

I personally loved the Isabelle trailer...we don't need an epic action reel with freakin' Isabelle, guys. It was charming, cute, and come on, they knew you knew it was Isabelle in Smash.
The wait for the Splash Screen killed me a bit, but I loved the trailer.

My point is that Verge could "leak" Barney the ****ing dinosaur and people will eat it up. And when that doesn't happen, he'll backpeddle like he always does, and his fans will just say that someone gave him wrong information.

And then there's people like me, on the opposite side of the spectrum, that will never believe a thing he says because he has already **** on any credibility he might have had by backpedaling and being flat out incorrect. He could 'leak' the entire remaining roster, word for word, and I still wouldn't trust him at his every word like his fans do, because that sets you up for disappointment. If he was wrong once, he'll be wrong again.
Can I ask you genuinely where he's been wrong?
I likely sound ignorant but again I am tired and cannot recall when he's been outright wrong RELATING TO SMASH. I know he's been very wrong about other games.

Please point me to incorrect information he has provided till now. Smash related of course, I don't care what you'll bring up about MVC:I or whatnot. The closest I can think is K.Rool not being in and even then he wasn't sure. The fact that you think that Ridley, Simon, Isabelle are all really good guesses sounds beyond delusional with no actual evidence to back it up. At some point you gotta realise that sounds way more farfetched than him having actual insider information

If it's a fact that he isn't guessing, feel free to provide evidence of THAT.
That's not how it works.

If you're trying to convince this hive mind that we're wrong, it's your job to present the evidence. Otherwise, all your anger is doing is wasting your time.

But if you must, my proof is in the metaphorical pudding that has been growing over the past 3 months. Ridley at E3, Snake at E3, Ice Climbers at E3, Simon Belmont and Isabelle all, collectively, prove that he's right under the properties of Occam's Razor, which states that the option with the least assumptions made is the most correct one.

We are all making one assumption with Vergeben: We've assumed his info is correct as the character roster supports most things he has said.

You're making 5 assumptions: Ridley was a guess; Snake was a guess; Ice Climbers were a guess; Simon was a guess; Isabelle was a guess.

Despite having the same evidence pool to work from, believing in Vergeben allows us to make only a single assumption. Claiming he's a fraud requires multiple.

Philosophy says we're right. And for the record, I didn't state Vergeben being right is a fact. You said it was a fact he's wrong.

I didn't think anyone was going to top Ridley and K Rool but my god they didn't even try to with Isabella lol. I couldn't imagine anyone losing their mind over this character. But congrats to the people who wanted her!!!

I'm just gonna share my take on the Isabelle trailer.

It's awful.

I don't mind her being in Smash. I really don't. But her trailer is objectively horrible.

Think about it this way; that trailer was supposed to be a trailer for a fighting game, yet the first half was just talking and the gameplay half was mostly taunts and other animations.

In other words, it barely had any action. And a fighting game trailer without action is like a sandwich without bread; it just doesn't make sense to not have it because it's literally what makes it what it is.

Isabelle is by far the worst Smash trailer ever, even by removing as much subjectivity as possible, simply because she was presented in the most boring way possible and I think that really hurt the overall reception, given that she was the only newcomer reveal.

I’m glad I’m not the only who hated her trailer for how boring it was.

Yes, I know it’s Animal Crossing and I shouldn’t expect anything action-packed out of it.

But couldn’t they at least do something cute with the Smash cast such as Mario & Link visiting her town, Kirby sucking down all of the fruit or Donkey Kong being forced to sign paperwork despite being a stupid ape?

Something like WFT’s trailer, anything.

I can't wait to see the salt if we get Shadows as an echo Tails as a Luigified/Wolfified Sonic """clone""".

Personally, I prefer New World Order for these types of things.

I admit Isabelle's adorable, but yeah that trailer felt kinda...rushed, if I could describe it best.
Kinda weird is that even though I feel the same, it was structured pretty much exactly the same as Ridley, K. Rool, and Simon's trailers.

A skit/scene starts at the beginning, and after about 1 minute of buildup, the splash screen appears, then we get about 50 seconds of character footage.

K. Rool, Ridley, and Isabelle's trailers are all the same in this regard. Simon's portion of his trailer is structured the same as well.

I think it's just a presentation thing. The skit leading up to the splash screen wasn't that great, and the song they used for the gameplay portion wasn't all that exciting. I think that if they at least used a different AC remix, that alone would have made her trailer a lot better.

While Isabelle may not have been a hugely requested character by the Smash fan base, she is still a very popular character from a game with a very large fan base.
She's also the type of character that fans of hers who may have been on the fence about Smash, whether because they're not big on fighting games or some other issue, WILL potentially pick up the game for as long as she's represented with her personality in tact (and judging by the trailer she is.)
That's the perfect reveal for a general direct. As awesome as Geno or Isaac would be, they'd be best off in a Smash direct, as the overlap of their fanbases and Smash is much larger, and the chance of them getting recognized by a casual Nintendo fan is smaller, than Isabelle's.

Just for context, what stuff specifically did vergeben backpedal on?
Most recent one is that he nailed Isabelle as an Echo when she is actually a full fighter which is understandable honestly. I wanted to get this out there because I made a comment about his backpedeling earlier but don't want people thinking he's guessing like the other person implies, I think he has actual sources mixed with bad sources that he puts out and backpedals on if it's not completely accurate.

since there has been a lot of talk about variable hype levels people had for today's reveal, I thought I'd put together my personal hype levels for all the characters between Smash 4 and Ultimate (since that's when I started actually paying attention to Smash). this is specifically for how I cared about the characters inclusion at the time of their reveal. obviously this is so I can insult as many people as possible, so do take it personally.

Hey now, don't go throwing that word around, because it isn't.

This was a double announcement, literally made so people wouldn't really know what they were getting (see: no smash logo opening at the start). I actually think it's brilliant, and if we want to look at it objectively it did pretty much everything right, especially on the front of what it wanted to do (announcing Isabelle and AC Switch at the same time using the same trailer)

"Nailed" is a big word for what he actually said which was that one source painted her as an Echo, not that she was a confirmed Echo.

Before my life gets engulfed in Torna: The Golden Country in less than 25 minutes, I kinda wanna comment on the Isabelle trailer and say that unless Animal Crossing wasn't announced, it was a pretty OK trailer. BUT, the fact they dropped the bombshell afterwards made sense why they kept that motif for the Isabelle trailer. Having being involved in projects that involve trying to hype as much of your video as possible, you gotta maintain a certain motif, depending on how you lay out your announcements, and the Smash + Animal Crossing 2019 motif made sense, so I'm not all peeved up about it. Served it's purpose.

This is the comment that makes me think that Ken might also be more than simply an echo.

In that case, he actually stated he was unsure, and that one source said echo but he was getting no definite answer from the other source(s.)

You're right that the choice of words was bad, I just think he really does have good info mixed with sources he's not sure what to do with.

Also feel free to poke holes through all my stuff because I want to get myself completely straight on the situation as well

Man what's even the point of Echoes then if Ken, the first "Echo" of them all isn't even an Echo?

Yeah. He's a very popular leaker. That doesn't mean we should start completely disbelieving the guy. Hope I don't seem hostile btw.

So, I think there's going to be 3 more reveals. And 4 more newcomers. And 5 more echoes. Why? Ok, so here me out.

I think we're not going to get a Direct next month. I think we'll get a Robin level reveal though. Because, the usual split of Directs are, traditionally, 2 months. So, November would be the next Direct going by that. So, a stand alone reveal in October and then another reveal in November's Direct. I also think we'll get our Final Smash Presentation at the end of November where we'll get two more newcomers. The reason being is because if we don't have all the information by the end of November then I think they'll have to show it all of in a Smash Centric Direct to confirm that, yes, this is all the base characters. They won't do it in December because of how early it releases that month. Now thats fine and dandy but what about those last characters and Echoes?

I think the standalone character next month will be a big deal character. What do I mean? I'm thinking Geno. Because he is a character that we want and Sakurai knows that and he'sfrom an already existing franchise which means there'sno need for a big spill on the character. He'd be likely to reserve that standalone spotlight for someone he knows will generate hype. Then next Direct, early November, will be that 7th Gen Pokemon. Mostly because Nintendo knows that a wider direct attracts more eyes than a game centric one, so if a Pokemon fan watches a direct hoping for Pokemon news and sees Inceneroar or whomever in Smash they're more likely to take interest. Plus, it is perfect timing for the reveal of a Pokemon with Let's Go releasing on November 16th. Then the Final Smash Direct late November, I'm thinking around the 20th, will reveal two more newcomers and the last of the echoes. I think the first reveal will be another big one, I'm thinking Isaac. Why Isaac? Because he's not from a preexisting franchise which means, like the Belmont's, Sakurai will have more to flesh out with the character. I think Isaac will get either Matthew or Felix as an Echo and this is where he'll go into the rest of the echoes in the game. Ken, Shadow, etc. Then he'll go over the modes and whatnot and he'll say "Now it's time for our Final character." And I think, I think it might be Skull Kid. Say what you want about Loz or whatever but I think a Zelda Newcomer is in and I think it might be Skull Kid. The Moon showing up but not Skull Kid is just... suspicious to me.

And that'll be it. That'll be base game. Now some of you may be wondering why not Elma or Bandanna Dee for the final reveal and it's because I think Sakurai understands the lack of a Zelda Newcomer has hit people hard. And I think it'll garner a stronger reaction. Elma is from a brand new franchise and BD just isn't a strong enough of a contender. Believe me, I love both of those characters but something tells me they're not getting in. Base roster at least. DLC is a completely different can of worms.

It was a good reveal for AC Switch.

But a bad Smash trailer. It did what it had to do, but the other trailers just went above and beyond in their presentation that seeing Isabelle just... tidy up a desk...

I did not, not until Smash. Her and Richter are the first characters since Marth and Roy in Melee I didn't know when they dropped. I mean, I barely know who Dante is, just some things have escaped my visions! /shrug

I'm always excited when Smash introduces me to characters, but now that I'm older and more seriously into speculation it doesn't happen quite nearly as often

I would be totally happy with that. I actually think that's a bit optimistic tbh. I wouldn't be surprised if we had 3 more newcomers, but I can't imagine 5 more echoes. I would be thrilled though, but I'm guessing we're probably going to have maybe 5 more characters total, at most. I tend to be a pessimist though so we'll see.

This doesn't mean much as Ryu is 1:1 to him in SF4 and not the simpler moveset he had back in 2.

wouldn’t really work

there were several sections that required you to look between the gamepad and TV. Unfortunate cause I loved that game and wish more people could play it
Ah fair, maybe a new game then? Idk if the sales were high enough to justify it. I only played a demo of the first game but it was pretty fun, would love to play more.

I'd like to get you guy's opinions of something that I've though about, but might not work.

So, awhile back I was scrolling through a thread that dealt with limiting the roster to 12 characters, and someone mention that this would only be possible if Smash went 3D.

Now, for some reason, I can't get the idea of what a Smash game in full 3D would be like, if it would even be possible.
What about you guys? Do you think a Smash game can be made in 3D?
