Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Doesn't change the point of paying for a subpar Online service at all.

You can like the service and don't mind paying for it but it's bull**** when people say this. The only reason Nintendo is doing this isn't to help support the Online for the console at all its just for the green buck. Watch Smash Online be *** again
And if it's ass when we actually get to play the game, then we have a right to be upset.

If having us pay for the service actively makes it better, I'll happily pay.

> Implying Sakurai doesn't reference bad games in Smash
> We clearly get Castlevania Judgement music with Simon
> There are songs based on Federation Farce and Yoshi's Crap New Island in Ultimate.
> Color Trash songs are inevitable

lol
I'm gonna laugh when there is, in the form of a trophy or a music track of some kind. The devs reference even some of the most lackluster/panned games in a given franchise sometimes (e.g. Other M).

Looks like @Aussie the Cursed Mask beat me to it. Judgment wasn't exactly a gem, lol

Smooth Criminal
Lords of Shadow acknowledgement already exists, the whip design Simon and Richter use, is the combat cross (the cross shaped hilt).
HOLY **** GOOD CATCH

brb laughing until release

Smooth Criminal
Looks like I've been dededestroyed.

This is truly the worst timeline.

I'd like to ask about your opinion. What are the odds that Sakurai will release a demo of Smash Ultimate to promote Online Service?

For me, well, I think it would be a very great idea, but y'know, the dataminers...
I know that there was the ESRB leak, but I'm shocked that there were no dataminers after the demo got released. Someone COULD have datamined the demo but no, nobody did that. Why? Just why?

What does that mean?
Apparentely, in the new Firmware update in 6.0.0, you can no longer unlink your Nintendo Account once linked to your Switch. The only way is if your console broke and needs a replacement, which case you will have to email or call them.

Say what you want about Color Splash, at least it isn't Yoshi's New Island.

I hate both of those Paper Mario games with every fiber of my body, but at least they (well, Color Splash at least) had some quality graphics, good music tracks, and witty writing. New Island is unsalvageable.

inb4 @Zinith comes in and throws **** at me
Nah, not even he can defend that game.

As others said because at the end of the day less than $2 a month is an insignificant amount of money.

If that's too much for you then just don't play online. It's their online service and if they want to charge there's nothing else you can do really. I'd be right there complaining with you if it was anywhere close to $50 a year or more, but seriously less than $2 a month is nothing.
I know it isn't an issue paying for it at all $20 is chump change and i will be paying it to play Smash online myself

It just bothers me Nintendo is offering NES games and that justify them having an online service at all, But hey maybe Nintendo will say **** this guy and prove me wrong i guess we wait until the direct

It's up to the individual to determine if it's worth it to them, simple as that. I'm sure there are many who are legitimately excited for the cloud saves and the NES games. Even though Splatoon doesn't support it, I am very happy I can backup my BotW and Mario Odyssey saves: That is super cool. Plus, being able to play certain NES games like Balloon Fight and the first three Mario Bros. games will be super cool as well, and we've been told by Reggie this service is the new VC, meaning more consoles will most likely come in the future.

I may not like it, but I will admit the price point is very accommodating and fitting for what little there currently (emphasis on that) is. Again though, it's up to the individual to determine if it's worth it to them.

Also, I'm gonna wait and see about Smash's online before calling doom on it. Nintendo may not be the best at online, but they have proven with Splatoon that they can offer at least a decent experience when they try. As long as it's playable and I can have fun with it, that's all that matters to me personally. To each their own, though. :)

And it probably will.

My most positive idea of Online is that online users get like... early or exclusive access to things like demo events.

Not a very positive thing.
I don't expect the online to be improved but I would loooooooooooooove for them to prove me wrong.

A demo would be suicide for them unless they only have the necessary files.

Topic: Pretend that Sakurai wants to focus on adding iconic Western third-parties in Smash Ultimate DLC. He can only choose 10 of them. Who do you include?
1. Dovahkiin (for CaptainAmerica CaptainAmerica :awesome: )
2. Banjo & Kazooie
3. Shantae
4. Crash
5. Rayman
6. I guess Lara Croft
7. Sombra (Tracer who?)
8. Hat Kid (Hat in Time)
9. Sans Frisk ASRIEL DREEMURR (Undertale)

And I got nobody for the 10th sorry

As far as I know, Senran Kagura's target audience is supposed to be male teenagers and adults who like boobs, with the games being about ninja girls with huge boobs. In other words, borderline softcore porn. I doubt Nintendo would be down to put that in Smash Bros.. Not to mention, Smash is supposed to be a celebration of gaming's finest, and a character from a game that only has girls with huge boobs as its cast doesn't scream "gaming's finest," it screams "one step away from Huniepop."

And no, the focus of Bayonetta's games aren't her assets, don't bother arguing about her being "too sexy for Smash" before she got in.

Isaac's trailer is going to be him at Dr. Mario's waiting room, trying to decide what color chair to sit in.

Yeah, I get your point, but what about my other question? The demo version of Smash was released for 3DS, and I was shocked when there WAS no dataminers. Seeing the game is popular you'd expect there to be several. But I saw NO datamines, besides that ESRB leak. Why and how is this possible?

Remember when Star Allies got datamined? Everything is dataminable.

It's most likely just a renewal so it doesn't fall into public domain. Either that, or I don't know how copyright law works. I'm European and the anti-meme bill passed so forgive me

That's the thing there was no point in datamining it because of the leak

That's my point. You can make a PB&J with like $2 worth of ingredients instead of spending the $10-20 eating fast food usually entails, thereby saving money.

Granted, a PB&J worth $20 sounds like something I'd want to try :)
There's a foodcart near my place that specializes in only PB&J sandwiches and they're all $8-12. It sounds ridiculous, but they're SO GOOD. They use different nut/jam combinations, throw in different sliced fruits or caramel or pumpkin bread, etc. And you can add a slab of fried chicken to any sandwich.

...now I'm hungry and this has nothing to do with Smash.

I finished Isaac earlier this week so here is Geno.
Geno
Geno lends a hand!

Tagline: Star-sent Savior

Geno is a doll possessed by a warrior from Star Road to fight Smithy and his gang. It aids Mario and the rest in liberating Bowser’s Keep and restoring Star Road.

Why Geno?: Like Isaac, Geno has enjoyed tremendous support throughout the years. Not to mention he was probably had a large amount of votes on the ballot. Geno also represents both Square as well as SMRPG which was a defining moment in Mario history.

Benefits: Besides making Geno fans happy, its inclusion also brings back SMRPG back into relevancy with a potential stage, music, and Assist Trophy should the staff feel its deserving of one. Mallow could potentially serve as a an Assist Trophy and a stage could possibly be Rose Town, Forest Maze, Factory, or Star Hill. In addition, further benefits to existing characters could be a Boshi alt for Yoshi.

Game Play
I would envision Geno to play similar to Mario in terms of size and weight with a bit more speed and range. It would obviously be more focused on projectiles. Its normal attacks has a wider range with many utilizing his dual guns. One of Geno’s defining characteristics is player-controlled interactions by having to press a button to increase the damage down at the right time.

Neutral Attack: Geno releases a short blast of energy which can transition into an infinite jab and then a jab finisher.

Forward Tilt: Uses one hand and fires off a short burst from his arm gun which hits multiple times.

Up Tilt: Performs a quick uppercut while jumping slightly.

Down Tilt: Takes both arm guns and fires off a single body downwards which causes a star explosion.

Neutral Aerial: Geno twirls while in the air which releases star energy from his two guns.

Forward Aerial: Does several flips while moving forward and releases star energy blasts from his guns.

Back Aerial: Performs a double drop kick that has a sweetspot at the feet.

Up Aerial: Raises his arm and fires several blasts above him.

Down Aerial: Takes his hands and releases a concentrated short ranged blast directly downward.

Pummel: Performs a head butt

Forward Throw: Geno takes the opponent and performs a double blast from his arm cannons.

Back Throw: Jumps backwards while holding the opponent and blasts them down to the ground behind him which causes a ground bounce.

Up Throw: Geno transforms into a catapult and shoots the opponent high up into the air.

Down Throw: Geno pushes the opponent down and performs a double blast with his arm cannons.

Side Smash: Geno delivers a single powerful double energy burst at an uncharged state. Fully charged is a one-two-three burst combo.

Up Smash: Transforms into its star form and shoots upward; slamming into the opponent while releasing star power before descending back down and returning to its normal form.

Down Smash: Takes both arm cannons and fires them twice on both sides of him resulting in four distinct blasts.

Neutral Special Geno Beam: Geno releases an energy beam that travels across the stage. Holding down the button causes one of three stars to appear which increases the damage dealt but also increases the starting lag.
  • Custom #1 Quick Geno Beam: It’s quicker with less time to to charge but also is weaker.
  • Custom #2 Auto Geno Beam: Simoly tapping the neutral button will initiate the charge. Press neutral again to fire.
Side Special Geno Whirl: Geno fires a whirling disc of energy which travels down a single path. It does below moderate damage when it makes contact but pressing Side Special again upon impact with the opponent causes it to explode; dealing even higher damage.
  • Custom #1 Lucky Geno Whirl: It’s easier to time the explosion of the whirl but lacks power.
  • Custom #2 Geno Wrath: Deals a much larger and damaging explosion but is slower.
Side Up Special Geno Cannon: Geno transforms into a cannon and fire himself into the air at an angle before descending back down. The initial explosion upon firing can damage opponents as well as the initial push upwards though by the time of the arch, it won’t damage opponents.
  • Custom #1 Gunpowder Cannon: Shooting GRon out causes a large explosion with more damage.
  • Custom #2 Aiming Geno Cannon: Geno can influence the trajectory by moving the Cannon up or down by tilting the control stick and holding down the special button. Releasing it releases Geno.
Down Special Geno Blast: Geno releases three beams which crash down in a single line, about a quarter of FD. They don’t deal much damage but it causes hit stun. Timing an Up Special button press right at the moment of impact does higher damage than before.
Custom #1 Solo Geno Blast: Fires a single much larger Beam in from of Geno which deals more damage.
Custom #2: Distant Geno Blast: Instead of it being in front of Geno, it’s at least seven spaces in front of him instead.

Final Smash Geno Flash: Geno transforms into its cannon form and releases a red orb that arches into the sky and crashes down to the stage; exploding in a sun-shaped blast that rotates; juggling damage and exploding a bit like a Smart Bomb. The attack can increase in size his the special button is mashed prior to the cannon firing the orb.

Viridi: That’s none other than Geno!
:ultpit: Geno? Sounds like a pizza place. Welcome to Geno’s! Can I take your order?
:ultpalutena: Not exactly. A while ago, Mario found himself allying with Bowser to defeat a common foe.
:ultpit: Wow! Talk about something happening once in a blue moon.
:ultpalutena: Mario was joined by Bowser, Princess Peach, and the tadpole prince, Mallow and Geno.
Viridi: You can count Geno as being one of Mario’s trusted allies.
:ultpalutena: That’s right. He may not have many appearances in Mario games but he is integral to that story.
:ultpit: I see. Mario’s friend, check. But what makes him so special?
Viridi: See his hands? They can transform into cannons that releases powerful star power.
:ultpit: Wow! That’s pretty convenient...until you want to actually use your hands.
Viridi: And how do you use your hands when holding your bow?
:ultpit: Uh, I put it down.
Viridi: My point exactly.

:ultsnake: Colonel. I seem to be fighting some sort of….puppet
Colonel: That’s no puppet, Snake. It’s a doll.
:ultsnake: Doll...puppet...same thing...but why is it moving?
Colonel: Hmmm...well, scannings show that it actually has a lifeforce inside of it.
:ultsnake: A life force….and?
Colonel: It doesn’t seem to have a name...or one we would recognize. Appears altogether alien to this world.
:ultsnake: That’s surprising considering I have been fighting space dragons, witches, giant gorillas, and a penguin with a hammer.
Colonel: Scanners show it possesses power unlike anything before. It’s….astounding.
:ultsnake: Colonel...this isn’t helping.
Colonel: Wait...Snake...searching through our multiverse database...we found its name.
:ultsnake: And what’s its name?
Colonel: Geno
:ultsnake: …….Geno?!.......You gotta be kidding me.

Additional Info

On-Screen Appearance: Geno’s doll body is already there and a star falls down and enters into it; bringing the doll to life.

Taunts:
  1. Geno shimmers and sparkles with star energy.
  2. Geno jumps up slightly while looking happy.
  3. Geno shakes his head up and down, right to left quickly.

Victory Animations:
  1. Geno’s star spirit leaves its body which causes to slump down to the ground with the spirit ascending into the air and twirling about the now lifeless doll.
  2. Geno adjusts his hat and then holds out his arm showing his arm cannon exposed.
  3. Geno spreads his arms showering in front of him with star energy.
Assist Trophy: Mallow: Mallow appears and could take out his cymbals and start banging them; sending out shockwaves like DK’s old Final Smash.

Stage: As mentioned before, I think that the following would be good rep stages.

Rose Town: A quiet town full of Toads and where Geno comes to life.
Forest Maze: Where Geno goes after awakening and is full of SMRPG monsters.
Star Hill: a place where wishes are asked which might be a fun game mechanic.
Factory: Where Smithy crafts his weapons.

Potential Trailer and Closing

The trailer opens up with a view of a child’s bedroom. The camera pans across the wall which has various posters for various Nintendo retro games including Ice Climbers, Star Tropics, Mach Rider, Mario Bros., and Legend of Zelda. It then moves to a t.v. with SNES connected to it with Street Figther II: New Challengers ready to play. The camera then moves across the bed stand where a gameboy color is left with a Pokemon Yellow game cartridge is left. The camera then pans across the neatly made bed and several stacks of actual Nintendo Power magazines are seen.

The camera then slowly swoops to a book case and a game guide for Super Mario RPG: The Legend of the Seven Stars is seen. Scrolling down, the camera then retreats back seeing stuff toys of Mario, Donkey Kong, Peach, Yoshi, Link, Pikachu, Samus, and Ness. The camera focuses on Mario’s face and, in the distance, various sound clips of Mario in a Smash battle can be heard. The camera focuses on each toys face with similar faint battle sounds.

Afterwards, the camera pans up to a nearby table and lurking over it is a mobile Bowser toy with glowing red eyes along with Ganondorf and Mewtwo. Bowser jumps down from the table and smashes Yoshi’s head. Mewtwo tosses Ness out of a window; breaking it. Ganondorf takes Link and Donkey Kong and smashes their heads together. Bowser punches Mario which sends him flying into an open toy chest which closes afterwards.

Samus is helpless as the trio of mobile stuffed villains make thier way to terrorize Peach when, suddenly, the lid to the toy box is blasted open and a blue blue arrives by putting itself between Peach and the villains. The villains look unimpressed before the camera focuses on the figure.

Aye Geno splash

Geno smirks and readies his arm guns and collects energy before switching to gameplay footage.

Gameplay footage

The ending scene shows outside the house with Ness laying motionless on the driveway. Shortly after, a dog arrives, sniffs Ness, and grabs him with its mouse and walks away happily. As the dog exits, the trio of villains crash from the second story window into a garbage can on the side of the street.

Other Thoughts: none

PsychoIncarnate PsychoIncarnate , as the owner of the Geno thread, what do you think?
I've been trying to skim over this but I spent most of yesterday sleeping and I went to the doctor today - I've been really sick recently. It doesn't sound too serious from what the doctor said, I guess.

It looks good from what I've seen. I personally would use more of his Cannonballs and bullets in the moveset. also for a taunt he's got to have his iconic victory/ timed hit animation where he bows his head.

Like I think the best forward smash is his Arm cannon weapon in which the front part of his arm flips up to reveal a cannon hidden in his elbow and he fires that. Slightly ranged forward smash that fires with a curve to it so it doesn't go too far. Might even help with preventing opponents from getting up on stage now that I think about it.

I usually use rapid fire bullet pellets for his rapidhit.

But that's just a personal idea I've had.

That's the thing there was no point in datamining it because of the leak
Well...Ms. Pink-Lady...the leak and datamines are completely different things, IMO. They could have datamined for the custom moves, for the trophies, for the complete enemy list, etc.

I will 100% say that Nintendo hasn't been transparent at all with their service and it's very much backfiring as I feel most people on the internet aren't happy about it (or they're being more vocal than those sucking it up). I think it was Nintendo's idea of surprising us like they normally do, but that's not good marketing for taking a free service and making it paid. Hopefully we will know more about the service tonight and it will clear things up.

At worse it's a terrible service they are charging us for. At best it will greatly improved connection and have great offerings. I'm expecting it to be a work in progress with more offerings and services coming out over time. The bottom line is we don't know...yet. and that's about to change.

I have no clue why. Maybe the tools weren't there at the time to do efficiently or just everyone wanted to respect Sakurai. No clue, just my theories.

So, going to assume everyone saw Nintendo renewed the Golden Sun IP trademark?

.....I'm not saying Isaac, but I'll be happy as a clam if chair theory dies today.
Wait where?

I just read that Nintendo is locking every switch user to their accounts next week
Is this about the email that Nintendo released yesterday?

Say what you want about Color Splash, at least it isn't Yoshi's New Island.

I hate both of those Paper Mario games with every fiber of my body, but at least they (well, Color Splash at least) had some quality graphics, good music tracks, and witty writing. New Island is unsalvageable.

inb4 @Zinith comes in and throws **** at me
I swear to God if they put that awful yoshi clan song in Smash.....

That's my point. You can make a PB&J with like $2 worth of ingredients instead of spending the $10-20 eating fast food usually entails, thereby saving money.

Granted, a PB&J worth $20 sounds like something I'd want to try :)
lol, that's what I get for skimming. I'm bouncing between here and my work application, so I get my wires a bit crossed at times and don't read things through all the way. Plus I thought the idea of a PB&J at Caeser's Palace would be funny. I happened to get an email from The Venetian right after posting that response, too.

Apparentely, in the new Firmware update in 6.0.0, you can no longer unlink your Nintendo Account once linked to your Switch. The only way is if your console broke and needs a replacement, which case you will have to email or call them.
I'd like to see a source, but if this is true, it's entirely to combat used console sales. And it'll really hurt the current Switch's value when they inevitably release an upgraded model like they do with every handheld.

That kind of pisses me off, actually.

About that Smash question at the end, I'm certain that a certain Dovahkiin fan is happy about it.

It's telling that Shantae's games are more wholesome than that series, despite having silly bikinis and bouncy mermaids.

So what's everyone doing until the direct, which is 5 1/2 hours away?
Me? Bingewatching VeggieTales classics. That stuff's my childhood.
Play some games, walk out a bit, the usual.

Going to class, going back to my room to do homework, watch Netflix’s Castlevania, go to class, then get to my room at 8PM and hopefully find my way to the direct without spoilers.

I'll probably play some games and lurk around here for most of the day while I wait. I wrapped up BotW last night and am now trying to figure out what I wanna play next.

Speaking of BotW, that game is really freakin' good and I would go nuts if one of the Champions made it in (especially Mipha or Daruk).

Well, I was hoping to sleep in today so I wouldn't have to wait as long for the direct, but my dog decided to wake me up early and now I can't fall be asleep.

This is going to be a long four hours.
