Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

For the record, Shulk isn’t strictly an anti-theist or aetheist, based on the events of XC.
Remember that at the end of XC, Shulk explicitly states that Zanza’s future and their future could have co-existed, a statement which defies a belief in anti-theism. Alvis also confirms this. And he’s obviously not an aetheist, given the events of XC as a whole. It’s pretty hard to not believe in gods when you literally kill one.
I’m pretty sure there is a term for what Shulk actually is, but I can’t remember it off the top of my head. It’s a pretty specific belief iirc, but there is a term for it.
So, he believes in gods but doesn't worship them. Deism?

Here's a challenge, think of an Axe user who's NOT from FE. Who y'all got?
Hmmm...Xenoblade 2's Blades come to mind.
Also Third Party rep, so an Elder Scrolls character, Gauntlet Warrior...

Lets go with Arthur from Ghosts n Goblins.

Belmonts, Daddy Kratos, Lizardman from SC, Minecraft Steve??

Doesn't seem like Nintendo deals with axes nearly as much as other companies too, probably cause it's a harder weapon to make look heroic so much as powerful, which Nintendo shies away from a bit

Yes, and seeing how much he empathizes with and respected Meyneth, I think Shulk at one point just realized what Zanza really was (a flawed human like him) and what gods meant to their world. That's why I think he saying he wanted a world with no gods pre-Mechonis has a lot of different meanings than post it.

He's definitely not atheist, but I dont feel anti-theist is an inappropriate label. Perhaps anti-religious would be better though. He's opposed to the gods controlling fate and opposed to huma-..um, Homs submitting to the will of the gods. That's pretty directly opposed to most religions. There are clockmaker gods and whatnot, but if the god doesn't interfere with the world, they might as well not be there. A real world anti-theist is typically a "dont care" on those religions.

Anyway, TL;DR I think Shulk is definitely not a religious person and is for sure opposed to certain types of religions that would include a lot of mainstream ones

That is quite exactly why you wouldn't ship that.

Don't trust you know FF7 going by what you know of KH. I'm learning that the hard way through my first playthrough of it.
Fair enough, only thing I do know about her is her death and her multitude of voice actors.

Well, the Xeno games in general loosely implement Nietzsche's writings, so...
Aside from Xenosaga part subtitles, not really... There is sometimes a topic around nihilism and humans being over religion, but honestly the game almost always go against that in some form. I think the director's respect for religion is very clear in most of his games and they always end in a very hopeful life-does-have-a-meaning tone

Isnt Deism belief that there was a god, but their involvement stopped after creation? That wouldn't describe Shulk either.

Personally, I've always liked viewing Xenoblade as the story of the god of Calvinism, god of Deism, and god of Humanism fighting and Humanism coming out on top. It's definitely reductive, but I think it's a good one sentence summary

I think this ordeal is proof that outer gods exist. We're all collectively going insane.

Yeah, I forgot about that.
Right before the final battle, Shulk says this:
"Meyneth chose to exist alongside us! She grew to consider us her friends."
"What you were hoping for was not friendship, you wanted worthless slaves. Our lives as food!"
Even though they're both gods, these two lines alone clearly show that Shulk does not view them in the same light.

I think Xenoblade is interesting and isn't anti anything but explores various themes religion being one of them

Shulk made it very clear he believed Zanza and everyone else could peacefully co exist together.

I think Xenosaga can go along with Eva and Castlevania for using Christianity for a kickass aesthetic first and foremost.
Understandable. Compared to other big monotheistic religions, Christianity has significantly more visual symbolism.
