Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

For the record, the Direct time was found to be 38:18, as per the Japanese stream before it was taken down. Should that runtime not correlate with the eventual (Japanese) Direct we receive, or should there be some overtly topical content within, I guess we'll have our (overall unimportant) answer.

So just to pass the time a bit, I'll propose a Game. You have to replace Each of the Pokemon reps with different ones, but each one you replace has to be of the same Type and come from the same Generation. Pokemon Trainer can still be itself (or changed to Blue, Veteran Trainer, Brock, or whatever) if you want.

Here's what I'd go with:
Pokemon Trainer --> Veteran & Ace Pokemon Trainer (each with Female & hair color variants)
Squirtle --> Omanyte
Ivysaur --> Gloom
Charizard --> Magmar

Pikachu --> Raichu (bit of a copout, I know, but I'd rather have Raichu lol)
Jigglypuff --> Clefairy
Mewtwo --> Alakazam

Pichu --> Elekid

Lucario --> Mega Lopunny (I know its cheating, but the intro animation can be Lopunny Mega Evolving)
Lucario --> Gallade (If you guys find the Mega-evolution choice to be cheating lol)

Greninja --> Pangoro (Going based off its 'Dark' typing rather than Water)

Incineroar (assuming he is the pick) --> Salazzle
Pikach >> Marill
Pichu >>> Azurill
Jigglypuff >>> Drifloom
Lucario >>> Lucario
Charizard >>> Emboar???
Ivysaur >>> Grotle
Squirtle >>> Froakie
Greninja >>> Zoroark????!

To brighten up the day a bit, how's about we talk about the Switch's Pro Controller? I must say, that thing might be the greatest controller they've made, man.
I went back to using the GameCube controller to play some Melee, and I just couldn't play with how that controller is, ergonomically.

I just wished that there were more reasonable means to get the Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Pro Controller because hot damn, that is too good of a controller. And apparently the D-Pad is better there, too.

Um, I'm not sure I see anything wrong with this.
He thinks technical factors are all that matters when it comes to these stuff, which is just blatantly not true. Nintendo's decision to delay the Direct wasn't because of any technical difficulties, it was to show their condolences to the victims of the event.

He does not understand what tragedies are. His tweet comes of to me as if he cannot make the connection between tragedies and people being sad.

You know, the thing that I don’t like about the direct getting delayed is the fact it’s in a vulnerable position where it can be leaked.

Imagine, that it’s the day before the direct and someone shows the Smash newcomer already, and all the potential surprises in the direct, that would just ruin the hype... there’s always something unique about waiting upon any Nintendo announcements, especially Smash.

Anyways, I hope Nintendo takes precautions and keeps this Direct TIGHT.

People. Are. Dead. And on top of that, people are without power. Nintendo wants to show RESPECT to those who lost something, which is why they delayed the direct, to give people time to heal and because now's probably not a good time.

So far those with autism like me, and can’t stop thinking about the game, I recommend finding new hobbies for the week. Like, look up what’s going on in the political world, go fishing, read new books, watch Hulu or Netflix.
Or better yet, RetroAchievements, that can keep you busy for a long time.

Anything but politics though, I don't want to be reminded of Trump ignoring what goes on in Japan.

I now have a fixation on Crossword puzzles now. Doing this jumbo pack book, really makes time go faster and takes the long wait off.
I prefer hidden word puzzles myself.
Yes, I have Aspergers as well. Embarrass

So, what is everyone doing this afternoon now that the Direct was cancelled?
Probably going to play games, seeing as there isn't anything happy happening today.

...And Burt Reynolds just died. That's just the kicker. :(

Luckily for me Spider Man drops tomorrow, so the waits gonna be nothing.

Unless they delay Spider Man a week too to coincide the new game with the Spider Man for Smash trailer.
Iron Fist season 2 premiers tomorrow aswell...meaning both Spidey and Iron Fist will join Smash

Our thoughts and prayers are going out to those in Japan right now. With that said, I'm gonna try to steer discussion in a happier direction.

Smash Ultimate's main development cycle has wrapped up, and Mr. Sakurai is taking a short vacation before the production of DLC. He's left you and your crew in charge of brainstorming ideas for new games and IPs to be represented by the DLC. The catch: Everything (except Echo Fighters) is required to have debuted post the Switch launch (so anything from Breath of the Wild onward. He needs:
- At least three character proposals. Bonus points for including your reasoning as to why they are included or what makes them unique.
- At least two assist trophy proposals to be added for free.
- At least two stage proposals; If new series are being represented by a playable character they must come with a stage.
- Anything else you'd like to add that would contribute to the game (music, trophies, etc.)

What do you suggest?

- New Fighter: Spring Man from ARMS. Added not only to promote ARMS but because his gimmick allows him even further reach than Simon, and his colorful design fits in with the rest of the cast; he plays kinda like Little Mac, but his specials are completely different and his melee range is amazing but with lots of ending lag on his moves.
- New Fighter: Octoling from Splatoon. Based off of the Agent 8 design and used to promote the Octo Expansion DLC for Splatoon 2, the Octolings are an echo fighter of the Inklings that have less ink reserves but do more damage and knockback.
- New Fighter: Rex & Pyra from Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Pyra follows Rex similar to the Ice Climbers, and the closer she is to Rex the more powerful his moves are, forcing opponents to try and knock Pyra away from Rex if they want an easier fight.
- New Fighter: Edelgard from Fire Emblem: The Three Houses. Added to piss off the Smash fanbase to promote the new game and because as an axe wielder she'd be more unique amongst the Fire Emblem cast.

- New Assist Trophy: Ninjara from ARMS.
- New Assist Trophy: Poochy from Yoshi.

- New Stage: Spring Stadium from ARMS. Spring Man's home stage from ARMS is brought directly into Smash.
- New Stage: Starfish Mainstage from Splatoon 2.
- New Stage: World Tree from Xenoblade Chronicles 2.
- New Stage based on the new Yoshi game.
- Returning Stage: Rainbow Road
- Returning Stage: PAC-MAZE
- Returning Stage: Jungle Hijinxs

New Music from Daemon x Machina, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, ARMS, and Fire Emblem: The Three Houses is included, including, but not limited to:
- Spring Stadium
- Ribbon Ring
- Ninja College
- Ramen Bowl
- Via Dolce
- Vs. Hedlok
- Battle!!
- Counterattack
- Incoming!
- Boss Battle II
My characters proposal would be:
- Spring Man from ARMS. Echo can be Ribbon Girl. He could have longest attack in the entire game, and he would do well as one of the new reps.
- Mirian from Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night. For adversiting that game. It looks so Castlevania!
- Protagonist in the XC 2: Torna DLC. I don't know what he's called, but sounds like it could be suitable, since it's also DLC.

Assist trophies would be:
Rex and Pyra: They would make a great duo assist trophy!
Musashi from Sushido: The Way of Sushi. He can launch the sushis, which will greatly heal your damage. Yes, more than the normal foods!
Reimu from Touhou. Touhou is a fan game, so it will be probably the first fan game!

New stages: Spring Stadium. ARMS.
World Tree. XC2
Jonnesh's Ship. Bloodstained. Again, it's the ship of that male guy, and he's the first person you talk to in the Bloodstained game. I don't remember his name, though.

Music from the 3 games will be included. Along with a unique, will be Tekken.

For how often people talk about every leak possible on here, I'm shocked to learn how many simultaneously don't want anything leaked or spoiled.

If the character reveal trailer is in bad taste (which I don't believe it is, this is all hypothetical), then them modifying the Direct in order to reveal another character on Thursday (or whenever it's gonna be) is not as unlikely as some people have stated because there's literally nothing stopping them from doing it other than the numbering system, which can easily be changed (including the CSS).
Because I'd imagine that they'd want to keep the turnaround time to a minimum when it comes to this. Diverting attention to where they don't need to (and they don't) would be just another step that they'd have to do. Even if it's just as "small" as swapping portraits on the CSS.

They could, alternatively, wait until it is more appropriate to show off the direct, or hold off the next reveal altogether until it's deemed acceptable to do so, if the reveal trailer was what was insensitive in the first place. When making the suggestion that they could just simply swap it, we're making the assumption that the character trailer was, in fact, what was at fault. Also, we are making the assumption that the marketing materials and other such things (such as blog posts, character videos, etc) are already prepared for the "next-in-line" character and already communicated to the proper parties. Among other logistic/marketing priorities, it's a lot more efficient and practical to just wait to reveal the next character when appropriate.

Depending on the rest of the content of the direct, they may have to redo some of the text or voice overs.

Just because they can do something, why would they when they can just... not. I can't think of a reason TO do it that's better than a reason to wait on it.
There's nothing stopping them from doing a lot of things.

Maximum Spider gonna be his Final Smash and will do just as much broken damage as in UMVC3, calling it now.

Seems to me that all he knows is that an earthquake happened and that the direct got delayed. I doubt he knows about the death toll. Don't jump to conclusions.

Even if the tweet was extremely crude or inappropriate, there's no reason to bring it up on Smashboards and be demeaning.
Yeah, that was my bad... I just got kinda heated up over this tweet all of a sudden, that's all. Sorry if I made some people uncomfortable....

For the sake of the incident, I'd like to share a photo with a biblical verse in it. If anyone feels offended by it, then please feel free to ignore it as I wish to respect other's religious view regardless of the situation. Will put it in a spoiler tag just so I won't cause any triggers.

Now back to the Smash topic, we know that K Rool is now #67. Minus echo, what's the highest number that you guys think will happen in the base roster? I'm willing to say at least up to 73, and maybe keep DLC until 80

I don't doubt that Nintendo wants to show respect to the victims of the earthquake and the country as a whole, but houses were ravaged and lives were claimed by the typhoon as well, Nintendo's own building was impacted, and they did nothing then.

I do have to side with the claims that something within the Direct was insensitive specifically to the earthquake. Personally I actually think it's likelier something other than Smash is the culprit. But who knows.

We're only going to get 1 more newcomer. No newcomers will be DLC. Sakurai is aware of what would happen should we get a character numbered 69. Also hey it's the 6th of September so in Europe it's 6/9

I agree with you, it would be quite difficult from a PR and marketing standpoint, but at the same time they may be forced to reveal a character in this Direct due to the way these reveals are spread before release, yet they may deem that one week is still not enough time for people to simply ignore the controversial aspects of the trailer.

Again, I don't believe the trailer is controversial or that it is the reason the Direct was postponed, the whole purpose of my argument is to show that, even if it is unlikely, it's not *impossible* for character reveals to be swapped due to a reason as arbitrary as the "numbering system". Of course these are all assumptions, but I firmly believe that assuming they wouldn't swap a character reveal for another due to the numbering system is entirely wrong due to the reasons above.

I'm gonna be a bit off-topic now, but do you guys know whether Smashboards has any way of auto-updating? I'm tired of hitting refresh every minute to see what else has been posted when I'm active in this thread.

People are what they are so don't get flustered by random displays of idiocy unless you have to interact with them. It's one thing to respond like that to insensitive comments happening on here but you should know better than to expect decency on Twitter of all places.

Looks like it's coming tomorrow.
I'm sorry but, you're mistaken.

The stream was originally going to be on Sep 6 2018, 6PM... EST. East Coast, North America.
That's September 7th, 7AM in Japan.
It was scheduled for the 7th in Japan.

Not hate, but I can see anger towards some really insensitive stuff, but no one should hate another. And people react to sad news in their own ways, whether that be humor or something else.

Not that long of a wait after all. Perhaps it will put all the anxiety and questions of when the direct is coming to rest now.

EDIT: Nevermind, guess I read it wrong too...

Lucario - Empoleon

Greninja - Volcanion

If showing sympathy is something that's required then the act itself is hollow. It'd be nothing but a formal display. Something to show off.

The dealbreaker for me is how angled the grips are on the GameCube controller. I'm fine with everything else that the controller has, but ergonomically, after sometime it sort of hurts to try and control without contorting to fit your wrists.

That's why I love the Switch Pro Controller so much, because the grips are pretty much angled to where it feels natural to hold.
