Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Our thoughts and prayers are going out to those in Japan right now. With that said, I'm gonna try to steer discussion in a happier direction.

Smash Ultimate's main development cycle has wrapped up, and Mr. Sakurai is taking a short vacation before the production of DLC. He's left you and your crew in charge of brainstorming ideas for new games and IPs to be represented by the DLC. The catch: Everything (except Echo Fighters) is required to have debuted post the Switch launch (so anything from Breath of the Wild onward. He needs:
- At least three character proposals. Bonus points for including your reasoning as to why they are included or what makes them unique.
- At least two assist trophy proposals to be added for free.
- At least two stage proposals; If new series are being represented by a playable character they must come with a stage.
- Anything else you'd like to add that would contribute to the game (music, trophies, etc.)

What do you suggest?

- New Fighter: Spring Man from ARMS. Added not only to promote ARMS but because his gimmick allows him even further reach than Simon, and his colorful design fits in with the rest of the cast; he plays kinda like Little Mac, but his specials are completely different and his melee range is amazing but with lots of ending lag on his moves.
- New Fighter: Octoling from Splatoon. Based off of the Agent 8 design and used to promote the Octo Expansion DLC for Splatoon 2, the Octolings are an echo fighter of the Inklings that have less ink reserves but do more damage and knockback.
- New Fighter: Rex & Pyra from Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Pyra follows Rex similar to the Ice Climbers, and the closer she is to Rex the more powerful his moves are, forcing opponents to try and knock Pyra away from Rex if they want an easier fight.
- New Fighter: Edelgard from Fire Emblem: The Three Houses. Added to piss off the Smash fanbase to promote the new game and because as an axe wielder she'd be more unique amongst the Fire Emblem cast.

- New Assist Trophy: Ninjara from ARMS.
- New Assist Trophy: Poochy from Yoshi.

- New Stage: Spring Stadium from ARMS. Spring Man's home stage from ARMS is brought directly into Smash.
- New Stage: Starfish Mainstage from Splatoon 2.
- New Stage: World Tree from Xenoblade Chronicles 2.
- New Stage based on the new Yoshi game.
- Returning Stage: Rainbow Road
- Returning Stage: PAC-MAZE
- Returning Stage: Jungle Hijinxs

New Music from Daemon x Machina, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, ARMS, and Fire Emblem: The Three Houses is included, including, but not limited to:
- Spring Stadium
- Ribbon Ring
- Ninja College
- Ramen Bowl
- Via Dolce
- Vs. Hedlok
- Battle!!
- Counterattack
- Incoming!
- Boss Battle II
- New Fighter: Captain Toad from Captain Toad Treasure Tracker. Added to finally round off the Mario cast with every character that appeared in the first game. Also because of how well his game did on both Switch and 3ds and could promote a possible sequel down the road.
- New Fighter: Springman & Ribbon Girl from ARMS. These two were added because of their success on Switch. Springman being the default and Ribbon Girl as his Echo. The difference between the two could be Springman having a similar mechanic to Lucario's Aura, where he does more damage and knockback when he gets to a higher percent, making a callback to his unique ability in ARMS. Ribbon Girl will not have that ability and instead have a triple jump, another callback to ARMS with her unique ability.
- New Fighter: Octoling from Splatoon. Splatoon has seen major success being one of the newer IPs for the company. To promote Splatoon 2 and the recent Octoexpansion DLC, Octoling will be joining the roster. Their default costumes are the one's that you see Agent 8 wear in the Octoexpansion and their alt costumes pull from a variety of Splatoon 2 gear, as well as having the other hairstyle option of a Ponytail for the girl and an Afro for the boy. They're moveset is mostly the same but, the weapons have been swapped to their variants. Splattershot is now Octoshot, Inkbrush is now Octobrush, Slosher is now Tri-slosher, Blaster is now Rapid Blaster, and Roller is now Dynamo Roller. The changes are the same as what the differences between weapons are in the original game.
- New Fighter: Jeanne from Bayonetta. In order to promote Bayonetta 3 coming out in 2019, Jeanne has been added as an Echo Fighter of Bayonetta. The changes in her gameplay are the exact same differences between her and Bayonetta in the original game.

- New Assist Trophy: Sheldon from Splatoon: Basically Resetti from Brawl.

- New Stage: Spring Stadium and Ribbon Ring from ARMS. They borrow their stage gimmicks directly from the original game.
- New Stage: The Reef from Splatoon 2.
- New Stage based on the new Yoshi game.
- New Stage: Super Bell Hill
from Super Mario 3D World
- Returning Stage: Rainbow Road
- Returning Stage: PAC-MAZE
- Returning Stage: Jungle Hijinxs

New Music
- Spring Stadium
- Ribbon Ring
- Ramen Bowl
- Ninja College
- Cinema Deux
- Vs. Headlok
- Captain Toad Treasure Tracker: Main Theme
- Plunky Pass Beginnings
- Mine Cart Tunnel Throwdown
- Puffprod Peaks
- Super Bell Hill
- Incoming!
- Ebb & Flow
- Fly Octo Fly ~ Ebb & Flow
- Endolphin Surge
- Blitz It!
- Songs from Bayonetta 3 to go with Jeanne

"Notice of postponement
We decided to postpone the broadcast of "Nintendo Direct 2018.9.7" scheduled at 7 am Friday, September 7 (Fri) from the damage situation of the large earthquake occurred in Hokkaido. Regarding the new broadcast schedule, I will show you again later. "
Okay, I'm following you...
Looks like it's coming tomorrow.
...where'd you read THAT in your own quotation?

Seems to me that all he knows is that an earthquake happened and that the direct got delayed. I doubt he knows about the death toll. Don't jump to conclusions.
I'm sorry. I just thought that he should be more open-minded when looking at things, but in the process I kinda got carried away.... I guess in trying to call out obnoxious people on the internet I acted obnoxiously myself... My bad.

I think in regards to the actual re-announcement, I think people are just anxious that Nintendo will hold the date to their chest until the day before like they usually do.

I understand that they need to wait awhile until power's back in Hokkaido, but I think people would be all around happier if they made a statement within the next few days saying it'll come on a specific date next week instead of:

*The literal day before*

Nintendo is likely looking out for those affected by the storm and disasters, as we all should try to do. It’s nice to comment and show support, but it unfortunately is just a comment. We have to do more than that to make the true difference.

On the flip side, Nintendo is also a business that wants the most exposure it can get. What makes more sense...air a Direct while people (customers) can’t view it? Or wait a tad longer until you get more exposure, which would mean more sales?

Nintendo is a good company. But their primary purpose is to make money.

Anything from spoilers to stupid "leaks" that we'll be discussing for the next month is allowed in this thread.
Ah, I see. Thanks for the info, I'll probably keep off of here until the Direct airs, then.

We're only going to get 1 more newcomer. No newcomers will be DLC. Sakurai is aware of what would happen should we get a character numbered 69. Also hey it's the 6th of September so in Europe it's 6/9
Considering what distrubing things anime and manga occasionally brings, I doubt he would really be concerned or know of the connotations.

Au contraire, I never expect humans to show decency. The less you expect of people the more surprised you be when some people turn out to be less crap than others.
On a side note, it is appropriate that you currently have Gentaro as your avatar, since his show was made to cheer up kids after an earthquake and tsunami happened. On the Sentai side, said tsunami actually changed series plans for Gokaiger for the better; actors from past entries have not only mobilized to pitch in with recovery efforts, but got guest appearances in the show as well (prior to this, there would have mostly just been guests from recent Sentai shows).

Is vitriolic hate really the answer to someone not showing the same level of sympathy you do?
Idk man when people are like "derp-de-doo Where's my direct I don't care about this Earthquake ****" maybe?

(Edit; I'm really sorry, that was out-of-line for me to say. I'm just really having a hard time containing my anger, I think I need to go lie down...)

A bit off-topic, but I just realized something that makes me feel really old.

Wario, Snake, and Ike (#30-#32) have been in Smash long enough to be considered younger than half of the characters.

So just to pass the time a bit, I'll propose a Game. You have to replace Each of the Pokemon reps with different ones, but each one you replace has to be of the same Type and come from the same Generation. Pokemon Trainer can still be itself (or changed to Blue, Veteran Trainer, Brock, or whatever) if you want.
Pokemon Trainer --> Veteran trainer (a trainer class that actually have used all three I switched to)
Squirtle --> Tentacruel
Ivysaur --> Gengar
Charizard --> Golbat

Pikachu --> Magnemite
Jigglypuff --> Kangaskhan
Mewtwo --> Alakazam
Pichu --> Flaaffy
Lucario --> Toxicroak
Greninja --> Barbaracle

I'm surprisingly happy with how my trainer replacement ended up.

A supportive drawing seems like the best course of action. It isn't much, but it's at least tangible.

Yeah, it's one of my hobbies, though I usually stick to older ones. :grin: I'm quite happy that Juspion is getting an official release, at least.

Out of the Smash thoeries I've heard. The Trailer delay because of Isaac's Earthquake is the most ridiculous one I have ever heard. And is incredibly disrespectful. This is the kind of things that some fans do that makes some people turn against a character's inclusion.
Yet it isnt the first time something has been delayed for that kind of reason in Japan. There are examples of movies and anime being delayed because they had scenarios either similar or the same as a recent disaster

Here's an idea similar to the "12/26 Man Roster Game":

Who here knows the fan game Super Smash Land, the GameBoy styled demake of Smash Bros. that features :ultmario::ultlink::ultkirby::ultpikachu::ultmegaman: and :134:? Whether or not you might know where I'm going with this, here's the game:

Make a hypothetical roster for a DS Smash Bros. game. The limitations for this are:
1. The roster must be comprised of 16 characters.
2. The cast must be made of characters who debuted in 2005 or earlier. (For example, no 4th generation Pokémon)
3. You must consider system limitations, meaning that certain mechanics cannot work, such as transforming/swapping characters, Pikmin always following Olimar, and having Nana alongside Popo.
4. Each franchise is limited to 3 representatives at maximum. (DK, Yoshi and Wario are separate from Mario)
5. Only 1 3rd Party character is allowed on the roster. It's completely optional, though.
6. History of characters in Smash doesn't apply, so you can replace Pichu with a different Johto Pokémon for all I care, or exclude DK and Fox, knock yourselves out. However, the roster is required to have :ultmario::ultlink::ultkirby::ultpikachu:NO MATTER WHAT.

Now with that all said and done, have fun. I will be making my roster later, as I have a class starting in a few minutes.
I'm gonna cheat a bit here. Lucario and the Mystery of Mew came out in 2005, so he meets the cutoff as a Roy-like addition. :p

:ultmario::ultpeach::ultbowser::ultluigi:
:ultlink::ultzelda::ultganondorf::ultsamus:
:ultmarth:Caeda:ultkirby::ultkingdedede:
:ultpikachu::ultlucario::ultlittlemac::ultfox:
Luigi is representing Luigi's Mansion here. :p
I'm betting now that every character that's placed within the Dengeki Top 10 will be in Smash Bros, whether through the base roster or as DLC. Japanese fan demand is a big deal, and it seems that most, if not every character who's placed has worldwide support. The list of characters is:
The top 5 from the last poll who were excluded (These guys are practically locks as far as I'm concerned):
  • Isaac
  • Sora
  • K. Rool
  • Chrom
  • Arle Nadja
And the top 10 from the most recent poll:
  • Skull Kid
  • Bandana Dee
  • Lloyd Irving
  • Banjo & Kazooie
  • Paper Mario
  • Rex & Pyra
  • Magalor
  • Spring Man
  • Geno
  • Dixie Kong
Of course, this likely wouldn't be everything, as I'd expect some oddball picks like Dante or (hopefully) Joker/Yu Narukami, but what would guys think if these were all of the unique newcomers for the game (in the base roster and as DLC)

For me? It's nearly perfect. Add Joker/Yu Narukami and it is perfect in my book.
From what I heard, the poll itself was a fake made by a known Lloyd propagandist called bluedotnet or something, the same guy who made all the other fake Lloyd leaks. That's what people have been saying in the thread anyway, and as a result it got deleted.

Character 1: Spring Man (ARMS)
Character 2: Farmer (Harvest Moon: Light of Hope)
Character 3: Gunvolt (Mighty Gunvolt Burst) - Gunvolt 2 outfit is his alt costume
Character 4: Labo Man (Nintendo Labo)
Character 5: Jibanyan (Yokai Watch 4)
Echo 1: Shadow (Sonic)
Echo 2: Octoling (Inkling) *multi-costumes like Inkling
Echo 3: Ms. Pac-Man (Pac-Man)
Echo 4: Jeanne (Bayonetta)
Echo 5: Ribbon Girl (Spring Man)
Echo 6: Isabelle (Villager) *Costume 1 - Summer, costume 2 - Winter, costume 3 - kimono outfit, costume 4 - dress, costume 5-8 - top 4 fan fave girl animals.
Echo 7: Ken Masters (Ryu)
Echo 8: Akuma (Ryu)

New Stage 1: Chapter One (Captain Toad)
New Stage 2: Party Board (Super Mario Party)
New Stage 3: Metroid Prime 4 stage
New Stage 4: Spring Stadium (ARMS)
New Stage 5: Your Town (Harvest Moon: Light of Hope)
New Stage 6: Uptown Springdale (Yokai Watch)
New Stage 7: QUILL Headquarters (Gunvolt)
Returning Stage 1: Rainbow Cruise (if not already in)
Returning Stage 2: Pokefloats (updated with more Pokemon floats)

And just for giggles Mii Wizard (magical wizard staff attacks) and Mii Psystriker (psychic attacks).

I love how everyone's reactions to Mii fighters is either
"No one cares about Miis, so why waste resources making three different types when you can just give them a wii resorts moveset?"
or
"We need more Mii types so that it can make even more characters into semi-accurate miis!"

I'm part of the latter group, admittedly. I like making movie and cartoon characters into dumb little miis to play casual matches with. Although, I think you could consolidate the Mii Mage and Mii Psychic into a single Mii class, as their concepts are similar enough. Maybe have one custom set that borrows more from Zelda/Palutena/Robin and one from Ness/Mewtwo.

The catch: Everything (except Echo Fighters) is required to have debuted post the Switch launch (so anything from Breath of the Wild onward.
Captain Toad doesn't qualify according to the rules, I'm afraid.

Don’t hate yourself too bad, man. You’re only human. It’s weird how you ignore all the folks in Japan on the rescue teams though. Like...seems like you would have a little hope for them seeing as how they chose a career that’s all about saving as many lives as possible.

You know how the news reports bad people for criminal acts and ignores all the great people who should have a moment of recognition in their community for being selfless? You could be honoring those people rather than flaming random folks who literally only found this information out because they were waiting on Nintendo.

Everyone chooses where to focus their own lens, though. If this is what makes a difference in the world to you, have at it.

I assumed we'd hear a new date today, and then remembered it's Nintendo. Will likely be the day before, or week of if it's early next week.

Honestly that's more than ok considering. I've always wanted heads up on directs and knowing there will definitely be on this Month (and likely next week) is all I need.
Nintendo is likely looking out for those affected by the storm and disasters, as we all should try to do. It’s nice to comment and show support, but it unfortunately is just a comment. We have to do more than that to make the true difference.

This and didn't wanna be the first one to say it. It's a good buisness move marketing, financially, and respectfully. Regardless I think it's very tactful of them and appreciate it.

keep in mind that a persons empathy is shaped by their experiences! a lot of the users here are young and/or haven’t really experienced tragedy before. if they don’t have a previous context in their life to feel sorrow or remorse on this scale, it’s not going to always naturally happen! are the lives both lost and recovering more important to me? yes! but some people don’t have a reason to feel sad for this and that’s not an objectively bad thing. empathy takes work to develop for some people, and people might have pretty cruddy lives that impact how they respond to tragedies.

just my uneducated opinion of course

On that topic, I'd just like to point out that rude, obnoxious people are always easier to spot then the polite ones. It makes it seem like there is far more of them then there really is.
