Some people will get salty because the newcomer is too obvious and they wanted a suprise. Others will get salty because no one asked for the particular newcomer and it's not a fan favorite.

Sakurai could still pick Incineroar, but I doubt he skimmed through a sketches and notes and said, "Yeah, this guy looks pretty cool. I'll add him in Smash." There's other factors you have to look at, such as estimated popularity, promotion, and relevancy going forward.

That's not to say Incineroar doesn't have those things, but you're giving way too much credit to the concept art.

I put the most credit into concept art because Sun and Moon weren't out at the time. Of course there's other factors, but first and foremost Sakurai's gotta see it in his mind that a character works well in Smash. If several characters have those factors you mentioned it'll come down to who Sakurai finds the most interesting, and considering the time this game started development there's not a whole lot to work off of except for said concepts.

But that's not even what I'm talking about. I was talking about what I personally find the most visually interesting and Incineroar does that for me in spades compared to the other potential options.

However, one thing I can say for certain is that Shantae has more Japanese fan art on Danbooru than Shovel Knight does. I would share the links here but a lot of the fan art is hentai, and I don't know if I'd be allowed to do that. But if you Google 'Shantae Danbooru' and 'Shovel Knight' Danbooru, you'll see that Shantae has hundreds (almost a thousand) pictures of fan art of her, whereas Shovel Knight has only 60, and judging by the names of the artists, I believe most of them are Japanese

I'll try to find the source again, but he's not wrong. Shovel Knight had a lukewarm reception in Japan while Shantae's popularity, series-wise, is similar to the West.

Shovel Knight had also not released there until after the project plan had been completed for Ultimate (which may be why he's an AT, along with Nintendo publishing Shovel Knight in Japan)

Okay. So.

First, anyone can post anything to Youtube. It's an open platform. I have a channel, and in a couple hours I could record myself listing sources, looking professional, having some cool graphics and seem convincingly confident. I can almost guarantee you none of them actually know anything.

Second, comparing the hentai art of a scantily clad female character and a stocky dude with every hint of skin completely covered in armor is so over-the-top wrong that I'm trying to figure out if you're being funny or serious.

There is quite literally no fighter reveal that not a single person will scream, shout, whinge, and whine over, sadly. Some people I think take the Smash roster far too seriously and are far too easy to anger over. I think some people need to remember that, as cliché as it may sound, this is just a game, and getting heated over who's playable and who isn't will prove needless for everybody involved. Let's just enjoy the ride, because I'm confident that for each disappointment we have three things most pleasing.

I see you registered in November of ten years ago, but you don't post that much. Anyways, yes, you're right. Here's what I'm going to predict who's going be surprised from what:

Zinith is going to be surprised by Boshi. Already obvious but who knows.
P1ZZ4CHU is going to be surprised if Raichu is in game.
blazefan519 is a huge fan of I think Bandana Dee...I think?

Not really. These so called "fans" only wants him for the same reason as Waluigi. The memes. They don't even really care for the characters. Sakurai even admitted these "fans" only wants Waluigi for the memes hence the reason for not including him along with not being that important due to starring in spin-off sports games.

The whole character is a meme though. The things people meme about are parts of his character. Being a sore loser, a cheater, jealous, inappropiate, waaaah. Just look at him moonwalking in Tennis Aces, pointing at his crotch in Mario charged. Or the fact that he want Daisy for his own but she rejects him completely. Rejection is part of his character. That doesn't mean people do not genuinely like him. I do. He's one of my fav Mario characters.
