If I had to say the three characters that I am most confident in seeing, disregarding leaks, they would be:

Isabelle
Shadow as an Echo
Isaac

And even then, I'm not that confident. We're really at max capacity IMO.

I'd say Geno and Isaac are the ultimate test of how fan-service this game is.

Step 1 was bringing everyone back
Step 2 was Ridley confirming that anything can change
Step 3 was the combined effort of Simon and K. Rool that laughed in the face of relevance.

As for those two
Isaac for bringing back a series that's been put on ice and didn't have the luxury of being on the NES
And Geno for defying Legal entanglement

That's because it basically is. I've heard all 4 characters non-stop the past 10 years. All 4 are the meme dream team. If half got in, there's merit for at least one of 2nd half getting in too, especially since Sakurai loves Geno

I originally thought Geno would be difficult because of Square Enix, but I was recently told that there's really no evidence of that. Plus, Geno was a Mii Costume, so his chances of legal issues are a lot lower than other characters.

Now if there was a character who would be the epitome of defying legal entanglement...

Isaac, I have no attachment to either character but it feels like a character and series that definitely deserves to be represented, plus his moveset seems like it would be super cool

Here’s a question, disregarding any rumors or potential leaks, who do you think are the most likely characters for the base roster?

Personally, I think Dixie Kong and Isabelle are both fairly likely, as are BWD, Geno, and Isaac.

Isaac, Isabelle, Geno, Shadow and Ken.

Two B+ tier hypers for me, two characters I despise the very idea of and the original Echo fighter who is at best a middling pick who'd illicit a "oh neat" from me.

I've lost all confidence in Dixie, Dee and Impa for some reason.

One good thing about picking a fan-favorite pick over a "relevant" pick is that it gets those fanatics talking about it all over the internet. I don't know about you guys, and maybe it's just because I exist inside the Smash bubble, but I'm seeing Ridley and K.Rool everywhere now. All those crazy fanboys and girls out there are basically doing free advertising for Ultimate and hyping it up even further. While the silent majority might be like "oh, nice!" at a staple inclusion like Inkling fanboys are "BLLRGKEYBOARDMASHING ITS KROOL" at his inclusion. And as a result, I'm seeing people who don't even know the character getting swept up in the hype. I've never even played the classic trilogy myself and I know that I'm certainly swept up in the hype.

If Geno and Isaac get in, I can see something very similar happening with them.

Personally, Isaac because I like his lore and powerset more, and because he's the underdog of the two. Geno at least a has Sakurai's praise and desire to include him as a character (since Brawl and as recent as 2016).

I do want both in so the memes can finally end about them lol. There are also people I know over these past 10 years who would drop dead from excitement if either got in. Plus the fanbases here are super genuine and passionate about both characters.

I'd love either or, but as a smash fan, the community deserves both.

But I don't think it's a bad trend since it lends itself to move set discussion and might force people to think creatively. I can understand your frustration if you think people should not dismiss a character because they themselves can't think of a moveset, but I'm just saying Sakurai sometimes runs into trouble with movesets as well, but I think he loves the challenge.

Which is why I said the move set rests with the creator, though I think it's still fine to speculate on which characters could have an interesting move set, or to share ideas for move sets for characters that people previously thought couldn't have any. Honestly in the discussion board if someone says "This character doesn't have a move set", you are free to interject and say "no, the move set could be this, this, and this", so I don't see it as a big issue. From there, the conversation could progress to move set discussion which I think is positive since this is a video game and move set is one of the most important things.

While I can understand your point, the "X has no moveset potential" is still a sentence thrown around simply to shut dowm discussion and support of a character, regardless of the validity of it, and used as an excuse to hate on the character and their supporters.

It’s like they know nothing of Mario characters actual controls, Donkey Kong characters, Duck haunt, ROB, Sonic and actually the majority of the roster. Creativity has been applied liberally.
