Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Oh yeah, if you like Fortnite then that’s completely fine by me, I won’t be mad at all but at the same time I’ll never understand why you like it.

I guess that’s just me though.

Fortnite is a okay game its just the fans that make fortnite ****
Honestly if fans affect your opinion on anything then Smash is a bad game too considering how obnoxious some people are about it

"More like Super Trash Bros amirite (inserts embedded tweet about Waluigi fans attacking Sakurai for not including him as a playable character)"

Dixie, Geno, Isabelle, Shadow, Skull Kid and a Gen 7 Pokemon are definitely all guaranteed at this point. There's no questioning behind it. I think there will be a Retro Fighter as well since its a trend like Pokemon then again some argues Simon already covers that.

Banjo-Kazooie, Rex & Pyra, Heihachi and maybe Isaac I definitely think are guaranteed DLC.
Eh, the only definite in's I feel are Isabelle, Shadow and Ken. Newcomers I feel like it's a free for all, every single big pick has reasons supporting and against their inclusion. For example:

GENO:
+ Infamously hyped for Smash.
+ Sakurai has mentioned wanting to include him before.
+ Mii Costume in Smash 4 complete with his own Splash Screen (which none of the others had).
+ Ballot votes are being considered.
- Comes from one game that came out several years ago.
- Not well known to casual Smash players. (This point could be entirely moot due to K.Rool being in.)
- There are more "well-known" Mario options that are still fan favorites (Paper Mario).

SKULL KID:
+ Fans have been clamoring for a new Zelda character for what feels like forever.
+ Extremely popular amongst Zelda fans and the internet.
+ Majora itself is extremely iconic to gaming as a whole.
+ Assist Trophy completely missing, Moon assist trophy in his place.
+ Young Link Final Smash not shown, could possibly be Fierce Deity to contrast with Skull Kid and form another pair of "rivals".
+ Remake came out around project plan announcement (2015).
- Comes from one game (Yes I know he shows up in Ocarina and Twilight Princess, but we all specifically want the MAJORA version.)
- Not very well known to the general gaming community.
- Majora is what's famous, not the character behind it.

GEN 7 POKEMON:
+ Pokemon consistently gets a new rep from the latest generations each Smash game.
+ Any pick would be likely due to Pokemon's insane popularity.
+ Gen 7 is the newest gen, project plan would be early enough to see designs of it, much like Greninja in Smash 4.
- Sakurai would have no way of knowing if this Pokemon in particular would be popular with fans.
- Gen 3 and Gen 5 are without representation, Sakurai could decide to go and introduce one of them instead.

I can't say I'm certain on any one of them because of this, the reasons detracting from them are notable enough to not have complete confidence.

Originally, I was against Gothitelle because "lazy Gen V character for the sake of Gen V character" is extremely weak, especially when Gen V has some really neat Pokemon in it. But with how much I've memed it up, I'd main Gothitelle if it got in. I've never even disliked it as a Pokemon, especially after my Black Nuzlocke.
I’ve disliked plenty of characters, but end up playing them all and liking them in the end. The only exception is Wario. I am incapable of liking Wario.

Anyways this is my final prediction.

Base:
Newcomers:
Bandana Dee
Geno
Rhythm Heaven Rep (Chorus Kids or Karate Joe)
Pokemon Gen 7 Rep (Likely Incineroar)
Skull Kid

Echo Fighters:
Dixie Kong
Isabelle
Ken Masters
Shadow

DLC:
Newcomers:
Banjo-Kazooie
Isaac
Namco Rep (Agumon, Heihachi or Nightmare)
Rex & Pyra

Echo Fighters:
Dark Meta Knight (Sakurai Bias be damned)
Felix/Matthew
Medusa (Same as Dark Meta Knight))
Octoling

Didn't add a Retro Rep because I think Simon and Richter already fills that role. So my prediction to this game is including Echos that we get 90 playable characters. Sounds a good rounded number.

People who think Fortnite is a bad game are just bad at it lol. It's the perfect example of how to do a Battle Royale game and the building is just a nice element that adds a lot to the game. Everything is concise and clear, from sound to visuals and the controls are easy to understand.
Stop trying to justify hating on popular games just because they're popular.

Tell me how someone could inspect element a page that hasn't existed for 2 months and I'll believe that. Seriously, I'm trying to wrap my head around it...
That's not the issue.

The issue is that it lacks Gothitelle.

Reminder. Because I love this info.

Smash 4 and it’s team were reused for this game. It is the most seemless transition from one Smash to the next there has ever been. The efficiency of this Smash development cycle is greater than any other Smash before it.
All of the veterans brought back were much faster to plan than any newcomer would be. They knew basically how each should look and what their moveset would be, even if they decided to change some things.
So far, we have only seen 4 actual newcomers.

I am not undermining the work that each of these tasks, plus new stages, modes and updated models require. However, the same has been true in every iteration and we still ended up with more than expected every time.

I am not sure we’re ready.

The Western side of Pop Star.
Except he debuted in literally the last kirby game Sakurai worked on.
But he never was in Kirby's Air Ride, he debuted in Amazing Mirror (which was done by Tomoaki Fukui).

On a related note, Galacta Knight was in Kirby Super Star Ultra, but Sakurai didn't work on that remake, so he just gets a detailed skin.

This is why I'm looking forward to the final newcomer count. It's on like Donkey Kong. :ultdk:

Weird how people ever like Dark Souls, then. Everyone started off bad at that game.

Yeah, that's constructive haha.

Never assume if someone hates a game it's because they're bad at it. That's an elitist statement and it doesn't in any way make your argument stronger.

It was deleted today not 2 months ago... sorry mate :ohwell:(the only thing that keeps it slightly alive is that the admin could confirm that it was not modified via inspect element).

Edit: usual typo

I don't know...Banjo-Kazooie to me just feels like they'd be more DLC then Base tbh. Plus by making them DLC would get Microsoft back some money through the deal of using them in the game.
Fair enough. I had thought since it was a prevalent belief, that perhaps there was some evidence or quote that would infer that. I don't think that's the way Sakurai sees characters--saving them for DLC. I think when he makes a game, he makes the complete package, and only concerns himself with post-game content until after the game is finished. Though, that's more of an assumption, rather than strictly based on what he had said. And I'm not sure what the legalities are in splitting money for the base game vs DLC.

Because if that were the case, it could be argued Square could want to save their character for DLC to maximize profits--I don't think Microsoft is any different due to being a "rival". And part of me thinks since Microsoft needs the PR, more than anything, they would be a lot less demanding than Square (this is a lot more presumptuous). "Oh, you want to use a character we haven't done anything with for the past decade, and you'll give US money?" (exaggerating, of course) Whereas Square is notoriously protective of their own IP. Which is why I think it was a given Microsoft wouldn't be difficult to work with even prior to Spencer's tweet. Sakurai himself and Nintendo, now--that's much more difficult, as Sakurai may not consider B&K, or even if he did, Nintendo could block it. Which is why I don't take their status, at all, as a given.

Remaining cautiously optimistic. :)

Ah, ok, cool cool. I assumed it was deleted at the time due to it just being spam (it was allegedly just a bunch of random letters/symbols). Wonder why it was only deleted today though..

Don't forget Echoes. Characters that Sakurai has said in the past don't take much dev time, in that they could make three of them and it would still take less time than one newcomer.

Don't forget that this Smash has had one of the longest development cycles.

I really think that Ultimate has a lot more than we're expecting, especially because Sakurai tried to get everyone's expectations lowered. Even if it isn't necessarily related to new fighters, I have a feeling the game will be PACKED with new content to explore.

So are we getting a Direct this week?

I’ve heard it thrown around in Discord that Loz said something.

Because it was bumped by some other user... we don't know if he was part of this 'elaborate masquerade'. One thing for sure, those french guys put way more efforts and planning into their fake leaks :p

Edit: The conspirationist in me still want to believe it's true tho.
