Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

It was actually a very solid game that didn't get the support it deserved. Lots of love in it but they didn't have the clout or the budget they needed.
Oh, I have no issue with people who do like it. Liking a video game is subjective; I wasn't trying to say the game was objectively bad. I just personally didn't care for it. I think it's awesome that there are people who like it, it just wasn't for me. :)

I don't even know where to start....
I'll just say I have a large emotional investment in Nathan Drake and teared up a little at the epilogue of Uncharted 4. I also got pretty emotional at K Rool's reveal trailer cuz I ****ing love that guy. Let's not pit PS against Nintendo. They are both wonderful.
Subjective.

No, it really isn't.
Not unless you're tunnel visioning super hard.
Well, E3s for the past few years have lied to me then, lol.

Third party stuff for them is abundant always has been. In-house stuff...?

hmmm.

I took more issue with how PS All Stars worked as a fighting game than the roster itself.

I still wish it had a sequel because if they took criticisms to heart and tried to improve the solid foundation they already had, we could've had a pretty good game. A better roster wouldn't have hurt.

It's not like Nintendo never gone through a Dark Age.

Though it's generally better at keeping a consistent quality.

But you made a definitive statement that no one cares about Drake. Objectively false and just needless PS bashing. We don't need to bash games with great critical and fan reception because it's PS.

I want them to suffer more...

This is what happens when you put all your stock in movies and call them games...

Not a serious soul alive actually has any emotional invest in Nathan Drake. Not one...

Though I know a TON of people myself in included who are invested in an obese cartoon Crocodile that plays dress up to starve a bunch of apes.:ultkrool:

Or a Witch who wears dangerous footwear is kinda just a magical stripper... :ultbayonetta:

PS is now literally Kratos's house, whom of which he had to fight for in court... Despite his history...

What has happened to Sony?
The fact you forgot about the Playstation 1 CLASSIC, South Park Rally, shameful.

From what I played a Playstation All Stars years ago, I didn't really like some of the mechanics. Like the only way to score points/get kills was to build up a meter and use a different super move based on how many times the meter filled up full. Launching people in Smash is just feels a lot more satisfying than a few telegraphed moves that just make the opponent disappear for a few seconds than respawn.

TFW you realize we haven't seen Diddy Kong in demos, meaning we haven't seen if Diddy still has his Dixie Kong color.

Very True.

The WiiU era was a mixed time...

There were some HUGE gems but mixed overall.

Wii era was 'good' but faded as the years went on.

This is irrelevant to everything, but I find the newcomer taglines to be... Really funny for some reason.

Like to us, character reveals are such a big deal. Especially for the likes of K. Rool and Ridley, it's such a monumental occasion to see these guys in Smash, like it's winning the Nobel Peace Prize.

But for Nintendo and Sakurai?

"Guys quick help me think of a really stupid pun"
To us, getting are most wanted characters in Smash is the most important moment in our gaming lives but to Nintendo, to Sakurai...

It was Tuesday.

Alright here’s a question:

Which longtime forgotten Nintendo series would you pick for Smash?

Advance Wars or Startropics?
I've played Advance Wars and I don't even know what Startropics is, so that should answer it.

That was my one issue with the game (besides no Crash lol). It's sad because they clearly tried to distance themselves from Smash with the KO system, but that was one instance where they should've kept it the same.

Sackboy main btw. :p

Oh, I thought you playing Devil's advocate.

Though I do think we're talking about two different things.

Fox still has his Wolf color for what it's worth.
No he doesn't

It was replaced with one that has purple fur

Despite the fact Wolf now wears purple, he definitely doesn't have purple fur

I'm not gonna lie, I've never been the biggest PS4 fan to begin with. They go after a certain demographic that I'm simply just not a part of, which is why I tend to prefer indies and Nintendo's stuff nowadays as those are the companies making things that I personally enjoy.

That's not to say that Sony doesn't have things I like, it's just not a very big list unfortunately: They have Persona 5, Kingdom Hearts 3 and Shadow of the Colossus, but that's about where my interest ends. Everything else I like is available on other systems and PC (my prefered platform besides the Switch). I'm just not into gritty realism or interactive cinematic games, which is what Sony is kinda pushing right now. Which is a shame, as their library was way more diverse back in the PS, PS2 and PS3 days.

Just my two cents, though; opinions on these things are suuuuuper subjective and comes down to personal taste. We should probably move on back to Smash talk, though, as we're probably starting to get a little off topic.

PS Allstars was an interesting game with good ideas that only really made one mistake that was fatal: the way kills worked. The roster could be forgiven if the gameplay was good enough. It brought more than enough new ideas to be it's own thing and not just a Smash ripoff.

The problems with the kill method is 1) set time matches aren't well-liked in fighting game and the system is flatout broken with stock, 2) it's easy to pick on worst player as it's the most efficient way to build bar, which create a very unfriendly atmosphere, 3) when you get killed you have a 100% valid reason to say "I didn't die because I did something wrong or my opponent did something right, it was because this third person did something dumb" which is a disaster in a competitive game.

I find it very surprising that Archeops made it higher on the list then Gardevoir and Gengar. Not to mention Garchomp, Blastoise and Blaziken. I mean, I'm an Archeops fan myself, but it never seemed that popular to me. Even Archen made the top 100, over Magikarp and Bulbasaur. Like...how?

Is it just waaaay more popular in Japan for some reason or something?

Archeops for Smash as a reverse Lucario.

Well that's just moving the goalposts.

Sony is no huge game developer, but Playstation itself is a console with dozens of knock-out games.
It is by no means "Kratos's house"

PS All stars I played Sly.

It was alright. But I was playing a lot of 2 v 2’s online with my cousin and when we were kicking butt he didn’t seem to think it was great and when we lost he got salty.

Because honestly the KO system was dumb.

Worked well for Sly’s Style I thought.

For Smash-likes of old my favorites were probably: turtles smash up, which was fine mechanics and gameplay wise, it just failed to make the special moves diverse or memorable enough to interest most people.

Jump super/ultimate stars: if you like jump manga and smash, play these Games. They’re great.

Cartoon Network punchtime explosion. It’s so bad it’s good.

The difference between :ultdarkpit: / :ultlucina: and any other clones in Smash 4/Brawl/Melee is that there really weren't any significant differences to warrant them being new characters as opposed to skins, a la Alph or any of the Koopalings. They had the same animations, visuals and almost the exact same stats as their counterparts. Unlike, say, Young Link, Ganondorf, Wolf, etc., they didn't seem to have any visual justification, or actual application, for taking up character slots.

Now that they've branded the term "echo fighters", suddenly everyone's on board with the idea.
Late but I’d argue Lucina and now Chrom so entirely change their originals playstyles by not having the certain power points on their swords. It make you space and position yourself entirely differently.

Dark Pit I agree with but I still like the Dark boi so I’m not upset.

Alright, who is the face of PS?
Being the face of a company doesn't mean they only make those games. Nintendo doesn't only make Mario. Microsoft doesn't only make Halo.

Yeah, Kratos is probably Sony's biggest character at the moment. He's a gaming icon. Nathan Drake, his closest competition for the spot, recently had his story finished, while Kratos' is still on-going. But to call Sony "the house of Kratos" in a derogatory way is needlessly reductive.

Nothing.
PS does not have a mascot and it never has. It's a game console, not a game franchise.
You'd have more luck finding game mascots in video games.

Well, unless you live in Japan, in which case your definitive PS Mascot is:

That was a list of Pokemon popularity, which doesn't necessarily correlate with who is wanted in Smash (my original statement).
And Pokken really upped the possibility of her being a playable fighter.

Not much of an argument as Playstation doesn't have much of a mascot, like Nintendo does with Mario. The playstation has a lot of great games, but not because they have a gaming icon, but rather that developers that publish under them such as Naughty Dog, Guerilla, etc. Just make solid games, some protagonists of Sony franchises are far too young to be as iconic as Mario. Aloy, Nathan Drake, Kratos among many others are great, but they don't have legacy Mario has, this does not mean they are bad though.

Archeops was always felt like an underrated Pokémon. Nice to know it's loved.

I mean Sony has plenty of quirky series itself.

An orange dimitted marsupial that breaks crates, chomps on mangos, wears tiki masks, and beats up giant headed yellow skinned scientists.

A talking purple snarky dragon that collects gems and burns anything as he wants.

An alien cat and robot that go on galactic adventures with a massive arsenal of comical and serious weapons.

Pants wearing mind controlled monkeys that try to take over the world.

Yadda yadda, the list goes on. The problem is that Sony barely wants to use them.
And how many of those does Sony actually *own*?

I took more issue with how PS All Stars worked as a fighting game than the roster itself.

It has only been six years- we could easily get a sequel.
