Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

I took more issue with how PS All Stars worked as a fighting game than the roster itself.

I still wish it had a sequel because if they took criticisms to heart and tried to improve the solid foundation they already had, we could've had a pretty good game. A better roster wouldn't have hurt.
PS All Stars is honestly a fun game, but it is very flawed. A sequel would improve the game by the lot if they took the criticisms to heart. More stages, a better roster and a better engine.

Oh, I have no issue with people who do like it. Liking a video game is subjective; I wasn't trying to say the game was objectively bad. I just personally didn't care for it. I think it's awesome that there are people who like it, it just wasn't for me. :)
My entire issue for the game was the KO method.

Idolm@ster getting a stage when Nintendo has Tokyo Mirage Sessions to pick up from would be downright odd lmao

To be honest. I do not know what is that thing. Is it a item? A player?
iDOLM@STER is a rhythm game series mainly in Japan. Think of Love Live, but...

- Has a way better female cast
- Has more historic songs under their repitoire
- The most successful out of the idol bubble
- Has fans that doesn't send death threats if their favorite seiyuu is in a relationship

These are pretty much irrefutable facts.

Late but I’d argue Lucina and now Chrom so entirely change their originals playstyles by not having the certain power points on their swords. It make you space and position yourself entirely differently.

Dark Pit I agree with but I still like the Dark boi so I’m not upset.
Optimally you still way to space well with Lucina, as attacks tend to be the most safe at the longest range. In the hands of a skilled player, she plays near identically to Marth, she just has more room for error at the cost of some potential power.

Chrom however will probably play a bit differently then Roy. He'll still be more about rushdown, but he'll be about spacing as well.

Make no mistake, just because I don't think PS All Stars is a masterpiece and I think it'd be pretty funny to have so many PS Icons in a Nintendo Fighter isn't me discrediting Sony.

Frankly, these past few months, I've been on my PlayStation quite a bit more than my Switch, if I'm being honest.

I certainly had my reservations with Sony's classics and IPs. When I was like... 12 or 13. :V

This is stuff people really need to learn to grow past. I'll always be a Nintendo fanboy above everything else, but damn if Sony doesn't have a great lineup, both then and now.

what's the last stage on that picture? I can recognize Urban Champion, Golden Sun, Minecraft... That last one is familiar but I can't put my hand on what it is

edit: I missed classic Star Fox stage as well, oh god now I really want it
edit2: nvm that one is from Dragon Quest not Golden Sun

Is this from the Sims?

It is represented in Smash already so it wouldn’t be entirely out of the question... Although not sure if the main series has been on Nintendo consoles before...

Not sure what image you're talking (well, I have a hunch).

I look forward to whatever it is you're doing though.
Oh, I was doing Umbreon! I couldn't find my first drawing that I did, so I'm doing again, and it looks great!

When you're a new studio and you can't just get the characters that became BIG franchises after Play Station 1 outside of the ones Sony already owns (God of War)
Sucks to suck. I can't say I didn't enjoy playing as Kratos against Cole from Infamous, but the whole "only supers kill" made the game have terrible pacing...and simple moves felt clunky..due to having more emphasis on the character animations...

Dial-a-combo just isn't something that works fluidly for a Smash type game..Hell, Digimon Rumble Arena 2 is imbalanced AF, but its a blast to play in comparison imo.

If Sakurai can't get Crash in Smash I will optimistically assume Sony nabbed him for PSABR 2..

Nothing.
PS does not have a mascot and it never has. It's a game console, not a game franchise.
You'd have more luck finding game mascots in video games.

Well, unless you live in Japan, in which case your definitive PS Mascot is:
So Mario wouldn't be the 'face' of Nintendo?

I wondered what you meant for a moment there before remembering the simcity AT. That still seems really out of place to me tbh

I wonder if we'll get an out of the blue character reveal like Robin's was this time. I could see the Pokemon newcomer being announced this way if we did.

I find it very surprising that Archeops made it higher on the list then Gardevoir and Gengar. Not to mention Garchomp, Blastoise and Blaziken. I mean, I'm an Archeops fan myself, but it never seemed that popular to me. Even Archen made the top 100, over Magikarp and Bulbasaur. Like...how?

Is it just waaaay more popular in Japan for some reason or something?

Archeops for Smash as a reverse Lucario.
Reportedly, the belief is that it was accidentally voted for due to it name being one of the first on the list alphabetically, with Archen's and Armaldo's (who also broke the Top 100) placements being used to support that theory. There may be more to it then that as it did do better then other examples that shared that trait by a notable amount, but that's generally the gist I've gotten from it.

Personally, I think the Archen line is overlooked, but that's just me.

The difference here is that the main drivers of PlayStation have always been third parties, whereas their first party output has never been as significant. Not that it matters necessarily, Nintendo has been the inverse of this.

That's not really what they mean, it's moreso that Sony doesn't usually declare any character as a Mascot. They'll have their poster boys, sure, but they've never really stuck to one particular character or franchise as a "mascot" for very long. PlayStation has ICONS, not dedicated mascots. And honestly, that's worked out pretty well for them, I feel. It's kept them from getting tagged as something like a "Kids Console" by the general masses, a curse Nintendo will always be stuck with, or Microsoft's association with only making shooters, as absurd as both interpretations are.

Nintendo has put forth Mario themselves as mascot, he's been with them for decades, has had an incredibly big number of games, and is still going.

PlayStation doesn't own most of it's icons, and the ones it does are only active 1-2 gens then go into hybernation. They don't put anyone themselves out there as mascot, and if you force someone to choose who there "face" is you'll get a different answer every few years (this would never happen with Nintendo. It was Mario decades ago and it's Mario now)

I have a question why does everyone think that Shantae is really likely to be playable like what?

That was my one issue with the game (besides no Crash lol). It's sad because they clearly tried to distance themselves from Smash with the KO system, but that was one instance where they should've kept it the same.

Sackboy main btw. :p
They should of kept the KO system the same, cause in a sad yet delicious sense of irony, Smash Ultimate took PSASBR finishing move meter, stage conversions and stage hazard toggle, and made it their own now
I'm glad you got what I was going for there.
Yeah I got you, that was pretty slick

Pretty much the same reason for most people who support a character: Wishful thinking and hoping your favorite will be in. As someone who wants her, I don't think she will be, but it's fun to talk about as she'd be really fun and unique. :)

I don't think as many people think that as you're exaggerating.

It's moreso that Shovel Knight being relegated to an Assist has sparked the possibility in the eyes of many people who support her. She does absolutely have popularity, and a long history with Nintendo.

It's really more if you're on the side of Shovel Knight's treatment being a good or bad sign for her. It goes both ways.

I'm a supporter of hers for sure, but I don't see her as likely. But she seemed to do fairly well around the time of the ballot as far as we can tell.

Because some people have convinced themselves that an indie rep is likely. With Shovel Knight out, the most likely options would be Quote (Cave Story is kinda the quintessential indie), Shantae (she's the most notable still relevant indie that ALSO has a notable Nintendo relationship), or a Touhou rep (history).

I don't think we're getting any playable indie rep myself. Although I'd be a little surprised if Shovel Knight got in as an AT and Quote doesn't show up at all. I always considered Cave Story representation more likely than Shovel Knight.

She's a popular indie character appearing mostly on Nintendo platforms. With shovel knight in the game as an assist trophy, to some it opened the possibility of an indie character becoming playable. I honestly don't think she's likely, but I don't disrespect the fans of the character. It's just fans liking a character and wanting to see them in Smash it's no different to other characters, besides chances.

Nintendo has a closer relationship to Shovel Knight since they had the Amiibo and published their game in Japan and all, I think. The AT was also probably a nod to Shovel Knight's popularity on the ballot.

I'd LOVE Cave Story to get some sort of representation, and I've always said that if there was an indie character, it should be Quote... but for some reason support seems low to nonexistent. Bums me out.
