Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

I think PSASBR was doomed from the start as due to Sony failed to keep the vast majority of titles the PS1 was known for exclusive when the next generation rolled around. Parapa, Spike and Sir Dan are cool characters but they're not what everyone knew the PS1 for. The majority of their exclusive in-house stuff was from the PS2 era, too soon for anyone to be nostalgic about.

Imagine Nintendo doing Smash Bros in the N64 era but they can't use Mario or Zelda characters for whatever reason so it's headlined by Kirby and Star Fox. I don't think it would have done so well.

Unpopular opinion: I speculated on Sm4sh for a long time... but I played PSASBR more than Smash for 3DS and Wii U.

I'm not sure what that has to do with what I just said.

I wasn't talking about how fun the game was, I was talking about how Sony's historic business models weren't condusive to Mascot Fighters.

The greatest playstation icons are almost all from 3rd party franchises.

The ones Sony owns are not huge icons by comparison. Perhaps Nathan Drake and Kratos are but the majority of people think first of playstation because of games like Tomb Raider, Tekken, Metal Gear and Final Fantasy.

It was just related to PSASBR: I never realized until my post that I actually played it more. And that it did what Smash once did for me, in that it introduced me to many Sony games.

This thread is always everywhere, so I tend to speak from the mind.

Crash and Spyro were always glaring omissions in my opinion.

While I agree with your general premise entirely, and agree about PASSBR, Smash Bros 64 came out in the late 90's and had Pikachu on the cover, it was selling well no matter what.

The bigger problem would have been keeping the post sale hype the way it did.

I'd say the character that PSASBR 2: Now with more Stars would need for Hype's sake would be

Crash Bandicoot
Spyro
Lara Croft (Original or Reboot)
Final Fantasy Character (If Sony won't allow your Fornite account if it's been tainted by other consoles I'm not sure about Cloud)
Assassin's Creed character

There's more they could add sure but that's the minimum in my eyes.

Add in Raziel, Kain, and the bad guy from ape escape and that’s a console seller for me.

Honestly, Id love to see Crash, Spyro, and Lara all in Smash Bros. They are all three gaming legends.
I'd also love to see something get in from Assassin's Creed, Grand Theft Auto, Call of Duty, Tetris, The Sims... but these scream for non-character inclusions. I want a lot more of those non-character inclusions for some of these franchises that are the most successful of all time

I kind of forgot that PSASBR even existed, I kind of remember it coming out and have a short buzz before it kind of disappeared.

I do too...
Man.. Sony friggin sucks lol.

She wasn't in their Smash clone either.

I've really grown to lothe them this gen.

PS3 was also a mess, and it screws with your head when you realize they don't really have 'icons' anymore.

Just Kratos who need a huge, fat PROOF of concept in order to come back.

...and Sly I guess.

To me, Sony always had an identity crisis in regards to mascots. All of them are either flavors of the month, or eventually 'defect' by going multi-platform to various degrees. There is no question who Nintendo and Microsoft's mascots are. But for Sony? Just a soulless revolving door position. Given these circumstances, it's a wonder that Ratchet and Clank even lasted to this day at all, and even then I'm not sure if their series will continue after Insomniac is done with Spider-Man.

Also, Sly is dead, since Sanzaru inadvertently killed his franchise with that interactive fanfic of theirs.

What was Skull Kid boss fight in MM like? Was it any fun?
You don't ever actually fight the Skull Kid himself, the mask just pops off him towards the end of the game and does its own thing. The boss fight with Majora is... interesting to say the least. Like, it's really good, but it also gets really weird.

Most of Skull Kid's actions in the game were done before Link actually gets to Termina, and what you do in the game is basically cleaning up the enormous mess he's made.

Honestly skull kid (and majora I guess) makes sense as a boss fight, most of the iconic fights from the zelda series don't really lend themselves well to being a smash boss, gohma's all about hitting a specific weak point, dodongo requires bombs, argarok is already covered by rathalos for the most part, ganon doesn't work cause dorf, no one really likes the imprisoned.

I could see it working out well.

Imagine if only three characters had the ability to beat King Dodongo. The frustration.

Edit: But not for me!

Don't know what will end up happening with Skull Kid, but I don't think that's the most reliable source out there. I wouldn't give that information any importance.

Found this this morning. Anyone know if this guy is credible? Will be super disappointed if it's true

https://twitter.com/LeakyPandy/status/1036231806129979392
Making him as a boss makes no sense if he's indeed cut as an AT. Isn't Rathalos both? Why would they cut a fully functional AT then?
I mean if he's still an AT I'll eat my words but yeah

Kinda makes sense, since the moon is an A.T. then what's the point of having Skull Kid as a character?
The Moon could easily appear in his moveset/Final Smash/etc like what happens with Riki

I still don't really see Skull Kid as a boss working, he's smaller than the majority of the cast, half of the challenge would be to even hit him at all, and that's something that would undermine anything else they would do with his encounter. It's just not very good design in any kind of platformer.

I'm well prepared for the possibility of him not being playable, I'm not as sure of his chances as others are, but I don't think he'll be a boss.

Maybe they just wanted to use the moon? there's not always rhyme or reason behind why things happen

Unless this person really is credible then I agree, It's interesting to entertain the thought though

I assume majora's wrath and the other forms would be included too which are much larger, if skull kid is involved he'd only be a small part of the fight

All you really do to Skull kid proper is shoot him once to get your Ocarina back and the second time you play a song to summon the giants, at which point the Mask shows it's in charge.

You fight him in Twilight Princess but I didn't like that part of the game. Stupid puppets.

Yeah this has been my stance for a while. Not that Skull Kid could not be a character without the moon (he can), but that taking away such a key part of him, when he already has less to work with than other included Zelda characters, is just a big negative.

I actively do not know what to do with the Zelda franchise. It's the current biggest mess of a series, in my eyes, as far as Smash speculation goes. It doesnt feel like the Zelda world is well represented at all.
Impa is a necessary Echo (a given- in fact she should have been the first Echo added), and I can even see Tetra as a clone of Toon Link...
Damn the more I think of it, the more upset I am that Young Link did not get a revamp to get Goron/Zora/Deku mask specials.

I can't really see Skull Kid as a boss. All bosses in Smash are boss fights in their respective games, and they use attacks from those games. I could see Majora herself becoming a boss, but LeakyPanda is specifically mentioning Skull Kid.

why are we talking about Smash or PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale when we OBVIOUSLY have a better, third game.

EDIT: does anyone mind telling me how to tell if an image will be broken or not

Honestly, I think the best Boss Fight character for Zelda in Adventure Mode would be Zant as he can start off sane and then as the fight goes on, whip out crazier and crazier set pieces to try and kill you with.

Of course with Dracula changing forms it's possible we'll get boss battles with multiple phases, unlike in Brawl, but man there'd still be a lot of characters who'd struggle with the first phase, especially if Skull Kid is in any way mobile. Like, imagine chasing such a small character around as Dedede or Ganondorf, it'd just be a pitiful experience.

I still think it'd be very problematic and that it's unlikely he'll end up as a boss. Not impossible, but just unlikely.

That could be exactly what makes him interesting- so frequently bosses are enormous, why not have one or two that change up the size dynamic?

We also don't know if each boss can be accessed by every character.
