Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Seeing that Shovel Knight fighting game thing kind of makes me want to try out the shovel knight game. I've still never played it
If you care for retro platformers it's an amazing game, and it's got fantastic humor aswell, it's well worth the money imo. The two additional stories are also top drawer.

Ridleys personality based on games.

-Stares at Samus in elevator (Zero mission)
-Steals and attacks a space station (Super)
-Ambushes Samus (Corruption)
-Scares Samus and makes her tremble in fear (Other M)
You forgot his cute little smile at the start of Prime, like who can resist a smile like that?

Do you like really good 2D platformers? Then you’ll love Shovel Knight. It basically takes all the best concepts and level design aspects of various NES platformers, (Mega Man’s bosses, Castlevania’s subweapons system mixed with Zelda 2’s magic system, Ducktales’ pogo-based platforming, Mario 3’s dynamic overworld, etc.), and combines them all with an actually good story with great character designs and lots of genuinely charming and funny dialogue. There’s plenty of sidequests to complete and achievements to get, and now there’s 2 new playable characters, (going on 3,) who have unique skillsets, level design, stories, and final bosses, (as well as sometimes having other unique bosses sprinkled along the way.) I probably just sound like a shill for the game, but I genuinely believe it to be one of the best games released in the last decade. I can’t recommend it enough.

It's "System", not "Sustem". Though "U" and "Y" are right next to each other, so you probably just missed the Y.

Really, I'm not all that interested in Shovel Knight. Mostly because I prefer more traditional platformers (i.e. Mario, Sonic and Crash Bandicoot).

Confession: I've only played the first three Mega Man games, and only via the medium of "The Wily Wars".

Didn’t mean to start a thing. It’s true Daisy has a personality as in characteristics that are attributed to her, but she’s not much of an interesting or fleshed out character. Then again not many of the Mario case are...

So, how could Villager differentiate himself from a potential Isabelle echo.

Not fleshed out, sure but not interesting isn't even remotely subjective.

Blame Miyamoto. He isn't really interested in major personalities. He doesn't even like having much story in Mario games. It's "should be on Zelda". Personality is just not a huge thing he wants for his creators. But he always focused more on gameplay to begin with.

If there's one statement that gives you away as a Brit, it's this. That game was not available to us 'murcans under normal circumstances...
Ha! Joke's on you, I emulated it.

Still a Brit, though. *sips tea*

Huh. I noticed that typo and thought I corrected it, but I guess I forgot to publish the edit. Oops.

Oh my god, you're giving me so many ideas...
Here're some ideas for ya.
Green Baby Yoshi - Eats projectiles and restores your health.
Red Baby Yoshi - Eats projectiles and spits them back out again as a fireball.
Blue Baby Yoshi - Gives you two extra jumps.
Yellow Baby Yoshi - Causes a small quake when you land after jumping, other characters within a short distance from you are stunned briefly.
Pink Baby Yoshi - Increases your jump height and reduces your fall speed.
Cyan Baby Yoshi - Periodically spits out bubbles, if you get caught by one, you have to mash to get out, otherwise you are slowly carried offscreen.

When you "Equip" a Baby Yoshi, it sits on your head.

I imagine Isabelle would probably be overall very similar, but possess different idles, taunts, and victory poses. Otherwise, I think she’ll be more like Richter/Daisy/Dark Samus and have very minimal move alterations, if any.

As a whippersnapper who has no nostalgia for the NES era and dislikes most NES platformers, I think Shovel Knight is a darned good game. It's challenging, but it just controls so dang well that it's never frustrating. I always felt like I was in complete control of the character and I really think that to be the game's greatest strong suit, graphics and music aside.
Hey, Ridley may be a murderer, a sociopath, a tax evader, but he is NOT a porn star!
Have you ever even seen Ridley wearing clothes? No? Thought not.
Friendly reminder: Yoshi's Island has the aesthetic it has not because of the Mario games at the time, but because of Donkey Kong Country. Miyamoto was told at the time to make a game reminiscent of DKC and promptly went on to make a game that was the EXACT 180 OPPOSITE of that...
And which of those graphical styles aged well and still holds up today?

Hint: It isn't DKC's.

It doesn't look that bad. There are other prerendered sprites that aged way worse than DKC. Like the original Mortal Kombat.

Actually, I think DKC's graphical style still looks fine, with 2's being the best and 3 the most questionable (mainly the fault of the bosses). It's the artistic consistency that helps keep it together. But Yoshi's Island mostly looks better except in some parts where sprite stretching or 3D graphics are used in a weird way.

This is such a bad take it should be illegal.
I agree.

DKC today still looks objectively good in my opinion, and amazing compared to most SNES games.

It only looks dated because of how far more realistic rendering has come in comparison to spriting.

If you didn't take the extremely rare opportunity to make your voice heard, then I dunno what to tell you man. You should always vote when you're given the opportunity to affect something you care about.

I don't know, DKC has always looked off to me. I understand that it was revolutionary at the time, but something just looks wrong about it to me. Something about the colors and animations just don't seem right. Not actually hating on DKC, I totally respect what it's done for the gaming industry and for Nintendo, and I'm happy to see K.Rool make it into the roster. It was ahead of its time, but one of the things about being ahead of your time is that once the technology catches up, it just doesn't hold up as well anymore.

I thought it was generally agreed upon that cartoonish styles tend to age better then "realistic" ones because they aren't nearly as dependent on technology they're using.

It certainly aged better than a lot of games from the early 3D era.

Alright, I'll give it that.

And with that I've probably angered a bunch of nostalgic Starfox fans as well. I should probably stop before this whole thread hates me.

Speaking of the SNES era, I got a SNES Classic today. :bluejump:
Really looking forward to playing some of the old games connected to Smash lore I have never played before:
Super Metroid (the last main Metroid I haven't played)
Super Catlevania IV (Simon)
Earthbound (Ness)
Super Mario RPG (finally getting to know Geno a little bit more)
