Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

BTW, I've heard in the tech industry, it's is standard practice to feed a suspected leaker false information so if that info gets out, you know who did it.

Do you think anything like that has happened in Nintendo speculation? That Star Fox racing game seemed to be one.
I've believed that this has been a thing this entire speculation cycle. After Brawl and Sm4sh were completely leaked before their release, Nintendo isn't pulling any punches this time. Especially with how important Smash Bros. Ultimate is for them; It's their main system seller for the holidays.

Here's why the Nindies thing means nothing for Smash and why an Indie character even if one were ever to be a part of Smash in the playable roster would not be revealed in a Nindies.

Imagine being a small company who is so honored that Nintendo is showcasing you and your indie partners and the work you do in a way that no other company truly does. Now imagine Smash Brothers one of their biggest franchises just barges right in, hogs up all the spotlight announces Shantae, for example, and then it ends to close it off.

What are people going to be talking about? It's certainly not that nifty little indie game anymore. It's gonna be Smash, Smash, Smash. And Shantae herself suddenly overshadows other indie characters in their time to shine as well.

Nindies are totally different from a usual direct BECAUSE they are used to spotlight these titles away from the triple A titles. Throwing in a triple A title reveal in one would be a pretty big screw over to any attention any game might have gotten prior to that Shantae reveal you just did.
Yeah, no one is getting announced for Smash Ultimate at Nindies.

I'm excited for the Nindies event as it is.

Any Smash stuff is gravy.

Shadow, Dixie Kong and Geno will be announced at the next Direct, without a doubt. Incineroar or Decidueye.... maybe not until closer to the release date.
Never be this sure on any character even with characters seeming likely at this very moment. It's dangerous thinking otherwise and could lead to negative overreactions to a roster that's already filled with so much the fans are happy with since every veteran is back and longtime favorites like Ridley and K. Rool.

Shadow for example is looking good right now, but what if he isn't in the base game? If he's in, cool. But chill on the guaranteed/without a doubt/all but confirmed/etc. talk unless there's an explicit and credible leak before he's even officially announced.

Ken would be the hypest echo for me, but he needs to be quite different from Ryu to be accurately represented.

- Ryu has a few moves that Ken never uses: Shin Shoryuken, Shinku Hadoken, Shakunetsu Hadoken, Joudan Sokutogeri and Collarbone Breaker.
- Ken would need a flaming, multi-hit Shoryuken.
- He would also need a multi-hit Tatsumaki.
- Collarbone Breaker could be replaced with his famous axe kick.
- Shoryureppa and/or Shinryuken should be his Final Smash

Doubt they're going to put in that much effort, but if they do, I wonder if he can even be considered an echo.

I mean, aside from the Final Smashes, which Chrom already has his own unique one, the other moves Ken does is simply a tweak of how the moves hit other characters. You don't have to change animations, you just have to add a fire effect and allow moves to have multi-hit effects. Older clones already do this (Link vs YL up-b on the ground.)

I'm sorry did I just see people take "Soren uses a dagger, a small blade to use the moves of a big blade echo" seriously? Cause having to edit the move's range and **** sounds like it takes an awful lot more effort than just giving a sword. The guy's wording makes it sound like Soren was given the dagger for that purpose, meaning it's a deliberate choice. That sounds really ****ing dumb

I talked about this the other day.

I think they would go the extra mile for Ken, given how he'd still be really similar anyway. Whether they'd consider him an echo or not at that point is up in the air.

For his Final Smash, I can see them giving him his two from SFIV. Guren Senpuukyaku for long range and Shinryuken for close range.

Not exactly. Ken would need a new forward smash, for example. Which would probably be the axe kick or the wheel kick he had in CVS2.

Are we allowed to talk about a specific character’s moveset outside of their specific threads? Because I just wanted to let everyone know Zelda has a kill throw, now.

Nope, not really. Akuma has different moves from Ryu like Ashura Senku and Zanku Hadoken. Ken shares the very same moveset from Ryu.
Not really either, at least not anymore.

Ryu in Smash has his SF4 kit, by that point all 3 characters were pretty distinct from each other, yet still similar. Ken having his kick variations and Akuma having teleports/that command jump that ends in a slide.

Not to mention all 3 having different supers altogether.

How to tell someone hasn't played Street Fighter in a long time 101
Yeah thats because why I'm confused, I feel they are giving this leak more credit then it deserves
I mean, that's far from the only damaging thing. "Sakurai bows and ends the direct. Then he talks about the online. Then he confirms a November direct before the direct finally ends" I'm half expecting the guy to say "Then Sakurai confirms Cranky Kong who's trailer has him dance to Devilman no Uta while Sakurai dabs constantly in the background trust me my source is legit"

But it is also what we’re used to. Zelda’ll take a bit for me since I really liked the colder adult version, and now they’ve knocked off about 15 years and shoved her into an anime. I’ll still play her, but her eyes are a bit big and her jaw is a bit small so it’s jarring to say the least.
Oh, I thought I was the only one. Yeah, I prefer more serious, regal looking Zelda than ALttPBW girl Zelda.

At this point, a "leak" could be posted by Bill Trinen on Twitter and I still wouldn't believe it.

I hope you're right. It makes sense to me that they would give Ken more attention than the 1st party echoes. I mean, you got yourself a 3rd party. Better make it count.

But she has a kill throw, now....lol
I like this one. But this Zelda was also my first Zelda, since I first played A Link to the Past(which has remained my favorite).

She doesn’t look as stiff in her new dress. It flows better, doesn’t look like she’s wearing a corset, she looks more like a sage now than an attendee at a royal wedding. If you’re going to be in combat, I’d say what she is wearing now makes more sense for the magical archetype. The bracers are also awesome to me. The heels are probably the only thing of which I’m not too fond. Heels aren’t....”battle ready.”

As for her being anime? This is just how she looked in the old SNES manual. It is iconic, whether you like it or not. I’m also glad she has a personality other than stoic for once. She looks happy. Like she knows she’s about to whoop Ganon rather than let Link have all the fun.

I liked Zelda's design in Brawl, but just because Twilight Princess was kinda recent. I like that they've changed her, although I would have gone with BotW's Zelda, my favorite Zelda in a loooong time. But yeah, her new design is cool and it's cool that she's more cheerful and kawaii.

To be honest, I never thought Zelda's girly sparkle moveset really worked that well on her deadpan serious TP incarnation, similar to how I never felt like Falcondorf never really worked on TP Ganon. It just makes way more sense to see bubbly anime girl Zelda blasting her enemies with magical death glitter then it would with either TP or BotW versions, and OoT Ganon looks way more natural running around throwing out punches.

The only thing I'm disappointed by with this is that Link loses his tether grab, although remote bombs are an amazing trade off for that.

Lair of Villains.

Multiple people have clearly made it obvious the mode is called Spirits.

Sure, Jan.
While this is obviously fake, I don't think the mode will actually be called Spirits. Aside from it being a stupid name for a main mode, I highly doubt they would go through all that effort of masking it without putting preventative measures in place, such as using a placeholder title that doesn't spoil anything if someone were able to unmask it (as they did). Yes, things like that have been leaked like that in the past--but they've hopefully learned from those mistakes, and those were cases where they were unaware they needed to hide anything. While it's *possible* it's called Spirits (pls no), I find it being a placeholder far, far more likely.

This is assuming he'll be labeled as an echo at all. :p

And, to be fair, even Richter seems to have the bare minimum of differences (just Holy Water's appearance). Chrom is really the only echo you could say has more substantial differences than your usual 1:1 clone.

But that's just me assuming from what we've seen. He could have more differences we just don't know yet since all we have is the direct with snippets of gameplay.

I can assure you. It's not a placeholder title. That's a lot of work to prevent a title that ultimately tells us VERY little about the mode itself.

With animal crossing crossing over into monster hunter 4 now I’m suspicious to why people still don’t believe Isabelle will be playable in smash bros ultimate

Now for the nindies direct tomorrow keep expectations at low we may very well get no new smash stuff at all

On the other hand for a special case since they don’t have to much time they may show a character so they can get them all in on time.

Doing the characters I knew/didn't know along the Smash timeline.

64: :ness64: was literally the only character whose game I hadn't and still haven't
Melee: :marthmelee::drmario::roymelee: were the only mysteries for me. I had a Game and Watch collection for Gameboy
Brawl: :pit::rob: legit had no idea what Kid Icarus was, and I legit thought ROB originated from SSE
4: No surprises or unfamiliar titles for me from this point on

I dont believe a single leak this time around because I bet you Sakurai has done everything in his power to keep everything a secret this time around after both games prior had been completely leaked.

So I do believe the false information or the idea that ppl are just saying whatever. I dont think sakurai would even risk anything being leaked

If the title of the mode is actually Subspace Emissary 2, then it would tell us ALOT. I don't think that's the mode, but it's just an example of why they would go through the effort of making sure the actual title doesn't leak. And it takes very little effort when you're designing the menu to use a different title before blurring it--less effort than the actual blurring process. I don't think the dev team is that incompetent to not use a placeholder, unless the implication is they wanted it to leak for some reason.

Still up Peach's dress.
Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't soren exclusively a magic user? and thus giving him a sword would be weird? It'd be strange to go with soren when celica is right there and actually uses a sword
Unless I'm remembering incorrectly, Soren starts with a knife despite his quick magic growth. Upon promotion he can go staff or dagger, although he is most optimally used with a staff.

As a result Soren could feasibly fit a Robin echo I feel.

N64. I never played f zero, metroid, yoshis island, or earthbound. I never owned a super nintendo. I played pokemon through emulators. I also had mario, zelda on the nes. For dk, i played it through demos at stores and on a cruise ship.

Melee. I was versed in all the characters outside of roy and marth. This was mainly due to smash 64.

Brawl. At this point, i was emulating most old systems, so i was fluent with all the characters. Even had gone back and beat some of the missed super nintendo games.

Smash4. Was lacking a 3ds, so anything from that was missed.

Ready for ultimate. I cannot get upset about characters in the game now. I want goemon, but given i have everyone back, ridley, richter and even more to come, i am just excited.

It is why i am making art instead of looking up leaks. It is all a ride at this point

Soren just starts with Wind Magic.
Him using a Knife is entirely optional
