Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Ooooooh? Link? I would like to see this. Was it the famitsu column?
It was in Famitsu, yes.

King K. Rool in Smash

I referred to the Smash Ballot when selecting characters this time, and King K. Rool from the Donkey Kong series was one who received a ton of votes. I haven’t gone into detail about his moves or characteristics, but I feel it might be better to leave some room for imagination.

In order to make him more K. Rool-esque, we had to make sure he stood up perfectly straight. Of course, we couldn’t make him too tall, however, so please forgive us for shrinking him down a bit. Then again, it isn’t like anything else in Smash is to scale anyway.

I think Sakurai chose the top say 4-5 or so picks from the ballot added Nintendo's hot new series about Squid Kids, got a new 3rd party series and then went down the list and saw which popular choices would make an easy echo.

Waluigi: different body type
Krystal: Different combat type
Ashley: Would bee too much of a stretch to make her an echo of Lucas.

I wonder if Ballot Support by Franchise will be a thing as well...?

Remember that Sakurai said that he got a lot of requests from Final Fantasy, so he put in Cluod basically as a rep of the whole franchise? People probably were requesting loads of various Zelda characters (especially with Hyrule Warriors having recently released) since the series hasn't gotten a unique newcomer since Melee, but Zelda really doesn't have a good "next obvious choice" like other franchises, and may also have suffered since a lot of the favored one-offs ended up as assists.

Skull Kid could be a ballot choice insofar as 'people wanted a Zelda rep and MM3D was perfectly timed...'
He did do well in the 2012 poll. The VGTribune poll from 2012 (more than 1 million votes tallied altogether from US and EU).

Time for me to share my thoughts on Sonic characters that have potential for getting into Smash:

If anyone has the highest chance of getting in as a unique fighter from the Sonic franchise, it's Tails and Dr. Eggman, with equal chances. They both have great potential for interesting and fun movesets, and are both very important and popular characters in the Sonic games. Only thing is, I feel that their chances are slimmer than Shadow's, with him clearly having the potential to be an echo fighter, and having a possibly larger support base in the Smash Bros. community, especially with him appearing as an Assist Trophy twice. Metal Sonic can also work as an echo fighter too, as he is literally a robotic copy of Sonic, but will likely get passed over in favor of Shadow for an echo of Sonic, if he does get an echo. Classic Sonic has the issue of being smaller than the Sonic we have in Smash, as well as the inability to do a homing attack (without the skill you can apply to him in Generations). Plus, I'm pretty sure plenty of people would complain about him being chosen over Shadow and Metal Sonic, with him being literally Young Sonic. Other characters, such as Amy, Silver, Blaze, etc. aren't likely to be playable any time soon despite their popularity, as they aren't as notable, important, or hugely popular as Tails, Knux, Eggman, and Shadow.

On a side note, I'm surprised we didn't get a new Mania or Forces stage in the game (Green Hill doesn't count) over Windy Hill to represent the latest Sonic title.

Well not every series got a new stage (3rd parties especially), only Mario and Zelda have a new stage, but atleast Sonic is the only 3rd party with two stages (also, I don’t think anybody would count GHZ as a Mania stage considering its a veteran stage based on the og game)

Anywho, Tails and Eggman are definitely the most likely unique characters to join Smash as a Sonic rep (while Shadow is just the most likely to join overall)...but leave Amy out of this (she has a chance to atleast be an AT or echo next gen...also Amy is good...in Boom and Forces only)

I don't understand how the Squad Strike works after Sakurai's explanation, but it sounds like it's not what I and many others thought it would be. I was hoping the x characters you pick would be your stocks. But it sounds like you fight as one character and finish the battle. Then the winner either fights your next character or you beat them x times to win.

So it sounds like it's just saving you from creating a 1 stock match and going back to the CSS screen? Effectlively it's the same thing, I guess... but doesn't sound as cool as what I was hoping for.

Or am I misunderstanding?

Powerstone's great, but it was basically all Capcom. Sega only made sure it ran on their hardware.
Between Power Stone's death, later Shantae games not being published by them, and Pullum Purna and friends being exiled from Street Fighter canon, it's almost like Capcom hates having belly dancers in their games.

Well, that's only if Konami makes Castlevania games like they used to instead of falling hard on this Lord of Shadow bull**** they've been pushing.
Not even that, since that's dead too. Instead it would be the pachinko game, with sexual violence.

Whoever wrote that tagline should be slapped repeatedly.

I'm fine with Blaze being passed over for a game or two, as long as the remainder of the Big 4 (Sonic, Tails, Eggman and Knuckles) can make it first. Would be cool if Mighty and Ray can get trophies, at least.

As someone who was speculating on these very boards when the VGTribune poll happened, let me clear the air.

It was botted to hell and back to rig the win for Skull Kid.

Guess Capcom likes their women with thicc thighs and great with guns (or other weapons)...and also shirtless Ryu and Chris Redfield

Honestly, I'd personally rather have Blaze in over Tails and Shadow for a Sonic Echo. She'd actually work wonderfully as a Sonic Echo, as all you'd really need to do is just put some fancy flame particles over Sonic's moves and boom: Blaze the Cat. Plus, she originated on the DS, so she gets the "was on a Nintendo system" points!

Honestly, I'll pretty much be happy with anyone from Sonic. Even if I don't care for his...recent outings, I still grew up with the franchise and would love to see it get some more love in Smash. :)
Yeah, except she wouldn't be a good echo for good reasons (note that if that's the only way she could make it in, I'd make her an echo in a heartbeat):

Pyrokinesis abilities: (hover, fly, shoot pillars of fire from the ground, shoot fireballs, flamethrower, rams into foes like a fireball, can form physical construct out of fire eg: swords, and teleport using flames).

Different Combat Style: Unlike Sonic, who fight like a breakdancer, Blaze fights a bit more graceful and acrobatic almost like a Ballerina.

Also while Sonic spins vertically, Blaze spins horizontally, while forming a fire tornado.

She can even do things in her Super form Sonic can't.

But all in all a great character choice.

Oh, didn't know she could do all those things! My only experience with her was a brief playthrough of Sonic Rush, I just always thought she had a cool character design and would be a cool, unexpected choice for a Sonic rep. Sounds to me like she would be better suited off unique, then!

Hmm...
Sonic has Aerokinesis (in the form of Sonic Wind)
Knuckles has Geokinesis (at least in Sonic Battle)
Shadow has Photokinesis (in the form of Chaos Spear)
Blaze has Pyrokinesis
Silver has Psychokinesis

Interesting how all the Sonic characters with canon Super Forms have some form of psychic power, huh?

While I'd love for her to be unique (hell in the game at all for that matter), I think she could easily be a Marth/Roy or a Mario/Luigi scenario where a lot of her moves are lifted from Sonic but some have fire effects or just altered completely, like maybe her fire spin double jump from 06 as her Up Special instead of Spring. Either way I'd legit cry tears of joy if she was made playable, whether a complete carbon copy or Sonic or not.

I think there's a possibility that even if we simply get 103 stages and that's it?

There's nothing say that Sakurai could add someone from a franchise that doesn't have a stage. He might have simply given priority to the newcomer over stage content and can in the likely event of DLC revisit them having a stage of their own.

Sonic Rush Adventure is one of the few Sonic Games I know next to nothing about, it was released during the short period when I wasn't buying handheld Sonic games (basically I only missed Rush Adventure and Colors DS).

Also Chaos has Hydrokinesis too (uh... technically), and "Perfect Chaos" is technically his Super Form. >_>
"Why do you say that it seems like the Sonic games were written by a 12-year-old? What on Earth would give you that impression?"
Maybe you need latent psychic abilities to manually harness the power of the Chaos Emeralds to begin with or something?

It would tie in well with the Nature v. Technology themeing.

Also... Zinith's favourite Sonic character, simply because he's a Green Reptile

To all those shocked by Isaac making the cut, raise your hand...(I'm not raising my hand)

What do people here think the odds are for us getting a legit leak around October or November? I personally think Nintendo will be able to keep things quiet and surprise us this go around.
