Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

¿Porque no los dos?
Melee HD would only appeal to the competitive audience, more specifically the competitive Melee audience, which is a very minor part of the Smash fanbase and an even smaller part of the Nintendo fanbase.

Taking the time to make an HD port of that game is not worth it. There's less than half the amount of characters and stages than in 4 and it's a lot more technical, so it would automatically drive away the casual audience. They'd have to rely on the previously mentionned tiny minority that actually plays Melee competitively to get any profit and prevent it from being a flop. Alternatively, they balance things up and it's no longer as technical as the original, pissing the Melee fans off.

There's honeslty more chances of a Virtual Console rerelease than a port for this game.

Melee is actually my least favorite in the series. So hell no. I'm actually offended that you would suggest something so stupid as a Melee remake and try to stamp that on me.
Well, all lot of the stuff you mention was last seen in Melee, so I assumed that... You know what? You're right, I shouldn't have done that. Sorry.

It's okay. I mean I get it, but this constant assumptions and leaps in logic are why I ignored N3ON. It makes me mad and I'm gonna get myself banned if I'm mad.

Honestly, I would love a Smash Brothers anime. I am an anime fan myself, and them having more character than Subspace + teaming together would be amazing to watch.
Smash for Switch should also add Boss Rush mode again, that mode was fun. We do have a lot of potential bosses from the newer games, like Ultra Necrozma. I know we will not get a Subspace Emissary, but a boss mode would honestly just add more fun to the game. I would proudly have it over Smash Tour.
I'd like to remind everyone who thinks that Sakurai always tries to keep characters as close their games as possible that Lucas literally has no PSI moves in Smash that he could perform in Mother 3. Even Rope Snake isn't something that Lucas uses. And his counterpart, Ness, isn't any better. The baseball bat and yo-yo are true to EarthBound, but PK Flash is the only PSI move Ness could actually use in his game.

Even though Sakurai claims that he wants to keep characters as they're represented in their games, the truth is, it's very circumstantial. Some characters like Bayo are followed to a T, while others have several moves that they could not perform in their game of origin, given to them for the sake of making them more interesting or manageable characters.
Thank you, I completely agree with this. I hear people saying Ganon needs a change in a move-set to make it more canon but I tell them no.
Take a pill.
You honestly need to learn how to respect other people's opinions and not be so salty about it.
I mean Melee is not my least favorite but still, please do not get salty over other people's opinions.

The fact that people need to be taught that Sora is owned solely by Disney so often always makes me giggle. Then there are characters like Bayo and Wonder Red and then there's monolith soft etc etc etc

IPs are fun /s

Might I advise to get less invested in what happens here? It's all of so very little consequence.

I'm not apposed to it, but I definitely think he's fine the way he is. All I ask is that maybe he can float since he's so ****ing heavy and lethargic. But, yeah, having his move set entirely revamped isn't a necessity in my opinion. I like him better when he's beating people with his brute strength combined with his dark powers.

So here's something else we can discuss. A total of seven characters who debuted in 2007 to 2013 got added in Smash 4's base roster. Assuming the same thing somehow happens again in Smash 5, which seven characters debuting from 2014 and beyond (which means characters from ports and remakes are excluded unless the original game came out in 2014 or later) would you add to the next roster?

For me, I'd add...

Mipha
Lycanroc
Rex/Pyra
Inkling
Octoling
Spring Man
Labo Man
Ones that I personally would want, assuming I can't pick any guest that hasn't been on a Nintendo system yet like Springtrap or Monika:

-Incineroar
-Shovel Knight
-Infinite (if for no other reason but to have an excuse to include his theme)
-Gerudo Link (literally just to troll everyone)

Ones that I don't really care about either way, but are on this list just to fill out the last slots:

-Inkling Girl (with Inkling Boy alt)
-Some ARMS character (Spring Man w/Springtron alt, Ribbon Girl, Min Min, Twintelle, I don't care which)
-Rex & Pyra

Gannondorf's Up B can be changed into a hovering mode. Gannondorf launches two body lengths into the air. From there he can move back and forth and to some extent up and down for a duration. He does not get his Up B back if hit.

A press of B has him throw a Deadman's Volley orb. A press of A has him perform a short range jab like his neutral A.

  1. Inkling
  2. Spring Man
  3. Rex and Pyra(/Mythra) as a two-in-one
  4. Incineroar OR Decidueye
  5. A Fire Emblem Heroes OC (probably Fjorm) OR a FE Switch character if released on time to be considered
  6. Someone from Codename S.T.E.A.M. (not sure who though)
  7. Shovel Knight as a potential third-party/very first indie in Smash

Indies would be a nice addition to Smash. They have been very Nintendo friendly and vice versa.

Shantae, Shovel Knight, Freedom Planet. I would scream if Lilac was a newcomer.

Regarding Ganondorf, I'm okay with him as he is for the most part, but I would be more than fine with changes to the following moves:

Down B: Honestly either a minor animation change or a functional change to make it resemble Wizard's Dropkick more to improve movement options.

Up B: A slight animation change or a recoloring of the electricity effects to make them more resemble the Death's Volley electricity. Alternatively, an effect addition similar to Hyrule Warriors?

Up air: Overhaul. The entire move seems a bit too acrobatic for Ganondorf. Perhaps he could create a ball of electricity above him ala Dead Man's Volley in OoT?

Grab: A more effortless looking animation, akin to how he grabbed Tetra in Wind Waker. Same thing for the throws, ideally.

Other than that, he's really faithful, particularly given two games of decloning.

Decloning the King of Evil has been one of my number one desires since, well, Melee. I like his fighting style and the custom moveset sword attack was a nice addition but, seriously, he has enough canon abilities to make a great high power magic dealer.

Neutral A could be his Dark Volley where he flings in at the opponent which can be bounced back by an attack or reflector which adds damage. Dorf can obviously reflect it back to add more damage.

Side B is summon Phantom Ganon who charges forth on horseback and rushes forward; slashing at the opponent.

Up B could be Dark Flight where he levitates in the air like ROB. Pressing Up B causes him to slam down to the ground while charging the area with magical electricity.

And finally Down B could be Ganon Blade where he takes his Melee sword, heaves it back, and slams it forward at an upward angle which has a strange upward angled knock back. The attack can be charged which deals more damage and moves Ganon forward slightly.

but he would still be Falcondorf in the next game unless Sakurai gives everyone an additional custom special move set.

Why have Alm and Celica as (what I assume is) a duo though? They don't fight that way in Gaiden or SoV.

I think we might get Fire Emblem 16 protagonist and a popular Gen VIII pokemon, also what about Elma from Xeno X? She could be a secret character i guess.

Probably another new series from the WiiU/3DS era, maybe the Wonderful 101 or Dillon?, a retro rep like Golden Sun as well.

I'm thinking that what Smash needs is somethign akin to Mortal Kombat X's fighting styles for customisation.

Ganondorf could be Destroyer (standard), Sorcerer (based off Volley) and Tyrant (Sword Based) for example; Mario could be Super (Current/Down B Spin), Sunshine (FLUDD based) and Odyssey (Cappy); and Link could be Hero of Time (Melee), Hero of Twilight (Current with Bomblings and other TP touches) and Hero of the Wild (BotW Based)

Naturally, you couldn't have this for every character (Mr. Game & Watch uses the entire library of G&W games in his current one) but I think it could spice things up without having to alienate anyone who got attached to movesets.

If there is a Smash Port, giving Customizable moves to the DL characters is an option.

For a new game, I wonder if they would drop the customizable moves for most individual characters and just make Mii fighters the one customizable character in order to save time for an exclusive feature for the next Smash (such as tag-team moves).

It will probably just be a port, however i hope they do something like this:
-Add content from the 3DS version to the Switch port. (Stages, Music, etc)
-Additional DLC Characters available for download. (Krystal, Ice climbers, Wolf, etc)
-New costumes for every character.

Custom moves I think can stay. Equipment doesn't serve that much of a purpose imo (also the reason why you can't use custom moves in All-Star and probably Online; if they just split them up it'd probably be fine).

Yeah probably, Equipment does give you some stat effects though, so maybe if they made them do more they would be more useful. Custom moves though, those work wonders. I wonder if they will give every character more custom moves at some point.

Ganondork talk huh?

In hindsight, I feel that the addition of :ganondorfmelee:was a mistake. Not that I didn't like his inclusion of course but it essentially doomed him to Falcondorf status for every consecutive Smash game. In his place I would have added Black Shadow instead. Adding him in Melee would have made him a mainstay most likely and would have given F-Zero more representation on the roster.

Ganondorf himself would be a Brawl newcomer and would fit really well since Brawl had a theme of big name Nintendo characters being added in to the game. (:diddy::dedede::metaknight::pt::pit:). He would incorporate moves from OoT, WW, and TP in to his moveset (Dark Volley, his flight ability, his Melee sword, etc).

It's a shame that he turned out the way he did.

Yeah i 100% agree, he had alot of potential to be his own character instead of a :falconmelee: Clone

I say make Ganondorf an original character and add Samurai Goroh as a Wolf-esque clone. Give him some of Ganondorf's old moves.

  • Falcon Punch/Samurai Punch
  • Raptor Boost/Katana Boost
  • Falcon Dive/Samurai Dive (Electrocutes people like Ganondorf since his vehicle is the Stingray")
  • Falcon Kick/Samurai Kick or something completely original.
  • Blue Falcon/Fire Stingray
Then the rest of his move set can be a mixture of his strength as well as original katana based attacks.

I know people are gonna get their panties in a twist, but I'd like to see Samurai Goroh draw a LITTLE inspiration from Falcon since he's his rival and we can still have that heavier version of Captain Falcon left over from what Ganondorf used to be.

Except Goroh has his katana...

Except I already acknowledged that and even suggested that it be implemented into a majority of his move set.

Is that nothing statement your argument or did you just not read what I said at all? Dot dot dot.
I kinda skipped after all the new names...

But still, I feel he deserves more than just being a Falcon clone.

-Some ARMS character (Spring Man w/Springtron alt, Ribbon Girl, Min Min, Twintelle, I don't care which)
-Rex & Pyra
Those actually seem like reasonable characters to expect. Well, all but Gerudo Link anyway. What would his attacks be? Reading chapters from Link X Sidon fanfics?

...Strangely enough, that's something I'd like see now.

In no specific order
  1. Inkling
  2. Spring Man

Glad to see Incineroar getting some much deserved attention.

Codename S.T.E.A.M. is the only one I'd question. Now the idea of Abe Lincoln in Smash is obviously awesome, but the game was VERY niche. I'm not sure if we'll get anything too major from that franchise.

He's not just a falcon clone. He just has some abilities inspired by his rival. I can't imagine him being the kicking type, but punch, dive, and his final smash feel proper along with the katana boost replacing the raptor boost.

That's just what feels like a good representation of him to me. He's a character who combines his brute strength with his sword wielding abilities, which make up a majority of his non-special attacks. Yeah, he has a katana, but that's not exactly a gold mine of potential any more than Falcon's fists.

But, to each his own.

Ganondorf does not need a full makeover. More like a Bowser makeover:

• Up B allows him to freely travel in the air and throw out a Dead Man Volley ball with B and stiff arm with an electric palm with A. The ball can be hit back. The percentage needed for a volley increases everytime after a hit.

• Wizard Foot uses his fist covered in purple electricity instead of his foot

• Change Captain Falcon's Down Smash into a flamboyant knee strike on each side simultaneously. The Capt. faces the screen and does a hop. He claps his feet together, soles touching, which makes his knees jut out of the side. Perfect timing gives a power boost.

• Change animations for Forward and Up Smash

• Up tilt can be changed

• Ect, Ect

Yeah. I'm not the "muh representation" type, but I feel like F-Zero has been too lonely for too long and that Falcon should be alongside his rival who is an important part of the games.

But, unless we get SOMETHING F-Zero related, I don't think it will happen.

I just want phantom ganon type moveset, more sword atatcks and magic attacks

Or, atleast make him more closer to his canon style, in all of his boss fights in zelda, i dont think he ever uses punches. Maybe he could utilize his sword, making him closer to link in a way, but i would like for him to maybe use his Tennis moves that he likes to use. maybe as a final smash? maybe a grab though, i think his current final smash is fine.
I would also like for his Character Models to be updated, *cough* Hyrule Warriors *Cough*

Oh yeah, forgot to bring this up earlier.

Eiji Aonuma and Fujibayashi (the developer for BotW) brought up their favorite Champions in a recent video. Aonuma revealed that his favorite is Mipha while Fujibayashi reveals that his favorite is Urbosa. I think this might be worth remembering if a Champion is considered for the next Smash. Not saying either will be picked, but this gives certainly them an edge over the other two.

(Oh, and one of the questions the two were asked was if they expected the fans' reaction to Prince Sidon. Their awkward reaction was priceless. Definitely worth watching.)

And speaking of :ganondorfmelee:, if we got Black Shadow instead of him as a :falconmelee: clone in Melee, that would have been a better situation, and thus may have made F-Zero more spotlight during the GCN era.

So yeah, kind of a lose-lose situation.

Honestly, I would love a Smash Brothers anime. I am an anime fan myself, and them having more character than Subspace + teaming together would be amazing to watch.
I’ve expressed my desire for a Smash Bros anime a while back and I’ll express them again! There was also a question I asked about this back then: what would it be like? A Dragon Ball-style action anime? A Gintama-style comedy?

Oh yeah, forgot to bring this up earlier.

Eiji Aonuma and Fujibayashi (the developer for BotW) brought up their favorite Champions in a recent video. Aonuma revealed that his favorite is Mipha while Fujibayashi reveals that his favorite is Urbosa. I think this might be worth remembering if a Champion is considered for the next Smash. Not saying either will be picked, but I think this gives certainly them an edge over the other two.

(Oh, and one of the questions the two were asked was if they expected the fans' reaction to Prince Sidon. Their awkward reaction was priceless. Definitely worth watching.)
That's the most ridiculous logic I've ever heard.
