Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

So here's something else we can discuss. A total of seven characters who debuted in 2007 to 2013 got added in Smash 4's base roster. Assuming the same thing somehow happens again in Smash 5, which seven characters debuting from 2014 and beyond (which means characters from ports and remakes are excluded unless the original game came out in 2014 or later) would you add to the next roster?
imo the inklings are basically confirmed for the new smash
  • Shovel Knight (probably Link's dAir but with a shovel)
  • Spring Man from ARMS (with a new way to play by using the Joycons to control the character's moves like in the original game)
Just these 2 (3 if we count inklings) came up to my mind, I'll be thinking about more later.

Speaking of Spring Man and the SNK discussion earlier, which ARMS fight is the most popular actually?

I wonder if the SSB Zelda cast (:4zelda::4link::4tlink::4sheik::4ganondorf:) Will get their Hyrule Warrior costumes, and also Link and Zelda get their BOTW costumes. I also want Toon Link to get his Outset island pajamas and even possibly a Toon version of BOTW link.
And maybe the Mario cast (:rosalina::4mario::4luigi::4peach::4bowser::4bowserjr::4yoshi::4wario:) Will get updated and get more costumes.
Peach, Mario, and Bowser will get their Wedding outfits from Odyssey as a costume
Everyone (but rosalina) Will get their Mario Strikers costumes
Yoshi will get more color variations
Wario...erm....i dunno honestly
And Rosalina will get her Mario Tennis costume, and either her Cat Costume or her Fireflower costume, or both

urbosa in smash will be a awesome tbh

The Champions are no different than picking a starter Pokémon really. All four are equally important, so if Sakurai needs help on deciding which to choose, he could go to either Aonuma or Fujibayashi for help.
Actually it's totally different.

Pokemon and Fire Emblem are all about NEW. There's always new generations of Pokemon and Fire Emblem characters. Characters are the best way of promoting games like that. That's not how Zelda works. That's why characters like Midna and Ghirahim don't get shoe horned in.

Maybe Zelda will get a newcomer when it has one that's worth it. We should wait for the proper character of an IP to arrive instead of stretching as far as possible out of desperation fueled by a false notion that there's GOTTA be more characters for a series regardless of how insignificant they may be compared to the current cast members.

The fact that we have to dig so deep that we're talking about who's the favorite of the developers in order to justify a character's inclusion really says something.

The zelda newcomer might be Toon Zelda, after all, she is apart of the Forbidden 7.
So far we got Roy, and Mewtwo. why not add the others?

Mario with new moves using Cappy tho (new recovery?)
Ahhh! Thats a good idea, sir.

And speaking of :ganondorfmelee:, if we got Black Shadow instead of him as a :falconmelee: clone in Melee, that would have been a better situation, and thus may have made F-Zero more spotlight during the GCN era.

So yeah, kind of a lose-lose situation.
You mean a win-win situation?

Either that or Skull Kid. Majora's Mask is probably one of the most iconic Zelda games and Skull Kid + Majora's mask the second most iconic villain. It's beloved by fans in a special way that can't be said for the other games.

More costumes is something I've wanted for a long time. I'm surprised Mario hasn't gotten anything big, considering how he's the face of Nintendo. Maybe since Odyssey had such a big emphasis on costumes, that will change in the next Smash.

You say that as if you personally helped Sakurai with the roster.

As far as I'm concerned, Zelda games are all about new too. Besides Link, Zelda, and Ganondorf, and occasionally Impa and Tingle, every new Zelda game features a completely new cast. The Champions have plenty of potential, and if one were to get added in Smash, I think everyone would be quick to accept him/her.

Those actually seem like reasonable characters to expect. Well, all but Gerudo Link anyway. What would his attacks be? Reading chapters from Link X Sidon fanfics?

...Strangely enough, that's something I'd like see now.

Glad to see Incineroar getting some much deserved attention.

Codename S.T.E.A.M. is the only one I'd question. Now the idea of Abe Lincoln in Smash is obviously awesome, but the game was VERY niche. I'm not sure if we'll get anything too major from that franchise.
I think we might end up with Wonder-Red as a secret character.

Oh boy I'd love to see Skull Kid or any representation of him in Smash. I guess they could add him and add Termina's Moon as Final Smash

No, I say that as if it's painfully obvious from past games. Which it is. I don't have to be Sakurai to know he's not gonna shoe horn anybody just because they were in the newest game.

I already said it once. There's a reason we didn't get Ghirahim and Magolor. Because those spots are reserved for characters that actually matter and aren't just going to be forgotten about as soon as the next game comes out.

Your concern is unfounded.

Skull kid will be a fun addition, his character is so goofy and mysterious pretty much anything would make sense with his moveset.
Maybe, similar to the deku nut item, he could stun enemies temporarily with his mask.

Are you sure we didn't get Girahim because Skyward Sword sold comparatively low for a Zelda game, so Sakurai may have wanted to spend time creating newcomers for other franchises? Are you sure Magolor and a modern Kirby stage didn't get added because Sakurai is finicky about representing anything in the Kirby series that follows his departure?

You're defending your argument with a set of rules and guidelines that YOU created. Don't act like you have a definitive answer for why those two weren't added.

Skyward Sword actually got a lot of representation in 4.

A Skyloft stage, the Beetle and Gust Bellows made it as items, one of Link's palettes references Link's first outfit from that game, the Ghirahim Assist Trophy, etc.

The lack of a new Zelda character is why I think Sakurai added several Zelda-inspired items and stages. It's the next best thing for the fans.

To be honest does the "reserving roster spots for a certain character" mentality actually matter? I seem to recall Sakurai going on record saying that he doesn't believe in the concept.

No that's what you're doing. "Are you sure it wasn't this? Maybe it was because of this! Maybe Sakurai was afraid of representing Kirby!"

If anyone is pulling stuff out of their ass, it's you. And by the way Twilight Princess was one of the best selling Zelda game ever. Still no Midna.

I was just using a phrase. I was basically saying those characters will be concerned long after if at all.

Honestly both of you are to a degree.

As of now we have no official information as to why Ghirahim or Mangalor aren't in Smash 4. Sure, we can make predictions for it based on previous events throughout the series, but it's still speculation until we get an official reasoning.

Honestly, more Mario and Zelda characters isn't necessary. If it came down to adding more Mario characters, I'd rather not see Dr. Mario, as much as I enjoy using him, and have him replaced with Waluigi, and just leave it at that with the Mario characters. I'm still not sure why we still have Toon Link. Link, Zelda, and Ganondorf (with a moveset overhaul, please. He's still a Falcon clone) is all we need. Sheik is cool, too, but she's just Zelda in disguise, and making her Impa would be interesting.

As for the Fire Emblem characters, I'd rather see characters with different weapons than swords. I'd have no problem keeping Marth, Roy, and Ike, because I've come to like all three. Even Robin was an interesting choice, because despite him having a sword, he also has to rely on his magic, which is nice. But I'd like to see a character with an axe, spear, or bow and arrows. And please, stop giving everybody counter. With that being said, the only characters who make sense to have a counter are Marth and Little Mac. Marth, because he was the original Smash character with a counter. I get that FE character have counters in their games. But not everyone of them needs one. And Little Mac having a counter makes sense because he's a boxer.

Believe me, I don't hold the answer to why Sakurai left those two characters out. The best I can do is speculate the reasons why, and I know that whatever I come up won't be the confirmed explanation.

OK new topic:

What is the most unnecessary character that can be added in Smash 5 but you'd like to see anyway?

Mine is probably Petey Piranha.

I'd love to see the BOTW-inspired outfits, same with ones from HW. I have a feeling that we're going to get the Twilight Princess designs again, so it makes sense to add more fun outfits. But to be fair, Ganondorf has some very glorious hair~

Can we get a Dry Bowser alt for Bowser please?

And have him be like the Koopalings where he gets his own voice clips and announcer calls and such.
I have a feeling the other stuff beyond having a proper costume might not happen. Unless Bowser gets more alts. For alts with unique announcer calls, it only does it if there's more than one costume of the alt(or alts) it/themselves.

Would be cool, though. Dry Bowser is certainly a fun one.

I personally think it'd be weird to have the announcer just call Dry Bowser "Bowser" but whatever.

I still want the voice clips though. I'm sorry, but it just feels wrong how in games like Super Mario 3D Land he reuses Bowser's voice clips...

If there is a Smash Port, giving Customizable moves to the DL characters is an option.

For a new game, I wonder if they would drop the customizable moves for most individual characters and just make Mii fighters the one customizable character in order to save time for an exclusive feature for the next Smash (such as tag-team moves).
Custom special moves are actually a good thing to have, but being tied down by equipment is pretty much the primary reason why you couldn't use them in All-Star mode, Stadium mode, or even random online matches.

Yep, I'd like crossover outfits that make sense and retains Smash's limitations.

I will list some examples.
  • I can easily see Falco in Capt. Falcon's outfit, since Star Fox did references to F-Zero and vice versa.
  • A Power Suit Samus could look like Mega Man X.
  • Link Sonic from the Wii U release of Sonic Lost World.
  • Maybe both Wii Fit Trainers could get a Dhalsim look.

Your guess is as good as mine

I see BotW alts for Link and Zelda as being pretty likely. The game is catching up to TP pretty fast in terms of sales and will likely overtake it to become the highest sold Zelda game. Designs for Sheik and Ganny are still up in the air but it's a possibility. Triforce Heroes alts for Tink would be nice, the cheerleader outfit was divine.
I wanna see tons more Villager alts to be honest. Of all characters to get more than 8 alts Villager should have been the one. There's just so much potential there, it'll be a shame to waste it again especially now that the NL design gives even more options with separate top and bottom clothes.
An actual Fire Peach/Rosi, they need the ponytail.
More hats for Pikachu and Jiggs. besides Guzma glasses for Pikachu and Lillie hat for Jiggs there's also the Kommo-o hat and Lurantis headband I'd like to see. Also subtle crossover hats just like the Kirby sleepy hat on Jiggs.

Hopefully this time they see what a goldmine DLC alts for characters other than Mii Fighters are. I would have paid good money for just SS Zelda so they're really not taking advantage of how lucrative selling alts could be.

A better execution is of course a good idea. I just can imagine a scenario where custom moves are dumped in a new game if there is not time to include them and properly introduce a new feature.
