Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

 • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

 • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

 • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

 • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Honestly, if we got another newcomer 3rd party and echo to go with it, Sora and Roxas would make waaaaaaay too much sense at this point.

Just comes down to obtaining the license.

Because there are plenty of other choices for distinct characters, and the roster slots for unique characters, this time ARE very limited given the tight dev time. All in all, it makes more sense for Sakurai to go for a ballot pick and please a larger number of people, than take a risk with a new Pokemon just for the sake of tradition.

Not saying it can't happen. But I don't think a new Pokemon is necessarily a given fact, considering how many Pokemon already make up the roster. They're lower priority than any top 20 ballot character imo.

Tbh, I never paid much attention to the story in SF. So that's fair I suppose. I still think Ken is a better pick/more likely choice than Akuma though.

Just.... saiyan.
Most of the new Pokémon are from Gen 1. Only two are from later games.

However, your claim is pretty subjective. Yes, Sakurai can get all the newcomers from the ballot, however if he finds that a character from a more recent game (I.e Pokémon Sun and Moon, and Xenoblade X) to be more distinct and simply likes them a lot more than a some of the ballot characters, he will do just that.

Of course the ballot will be taken into some consideration, but as well as some of the recent characters, and Sakurai already pleased a lot of people with some of the characters like Inklings, King K. Rool, and Ridley. There are probably others people want like Isaac and Geno, but if Sakurai simply doesn’t find them interesting enough to work with (which IMO he should add Isaac) he simply wouldn’t and look for another character.

Sakurai doesn’t just add characters people really want at this point, he looks at all of the stuff available and picks characters who he thinks people will have fun with, and this includes games like Pokémon Sun and Moon which is a franchise a lot of people like, and who’s characters have become favorites.

There ARE a lot of people who want Gen 7 Pokémon, some for the sake of having more pokemon not from Gen 1. It’s just a goldmine for adding unique characters that people enjoy. Is it guaranteed? No, it obviously isn’t, but it’s VERY likely that we’ll get one whether you like it or not due to it’s current state.

I don't see how Isabelle, effectively the face of Animal Crossing, and one of the fastest growing Nintendo icons 'doesn't make sense'.
Because she's constantly portrayed as a litteral pacifist.

And a new Pokemon is a given.
It's not a given, that's exactly what I'm saying.
Do you honestly believe that The Pokemon Company is going to skip out having a new character in a new Smash?
And? The Pokemon Company isn't God. Sakurai also has a say in things. If he believes there's no Pokemon worth adding as a new fighter on the roster, it's his call, cause it's his game. Especially with such tight development time for characters. He's gonna go with the most popular picks for characters overall.

It's literally free advertising for them at the end of the day.
The Pokemon Company doesn't need help in advertising their games. It's one of the most popular franchises in the WORLD, and S/M, despite my distaste for them, sold incredibly well already.

I don't care how many veterans Pokemon got back, TPC is a business, and they've never gone a single Smash game without a newcomer.
And this is why I say it's a safe pick for people who stick to patterns. A lot of people EXPECT a new Pokemon, rather than WANT a new Pokemon. Sakurai will do what Sakurai wants at the end of the day. He doesn't have to stick to any patterns or conventions, and leaks that play it far too safe, to me, just reek of being fake predictions.

It doesn't matter if they 'need' the advertising or not.

If you were the head of a multi-million dollar business, and was told you could make an extra million by putting your advertisements in a magazine, yeah you don't 'need' that money, but it's free money at the end of the day.

I completely agree to disagree that Pokemon won't get anyone new. It's way too ****ing obvious with how much Gen 7 **** we've seen but nothing of the starters yet. Or a stage for that matter.

@92MilesPrower Here is a gif to add to your collection:

(Redditor called AllIWantIsCake made the actual gif)

Like I said in the direct discussion thread: King Dedede really stole the show!
I love that part of the trailer so much, lol. Definitely alright with this turning into a meme.

Seriously, Dedede is one of the best Nintendo characters ever. He's just such a lovable jerk.

Every character that's been added thus far has been incredibly popular and very highly requested. All of them: Inkling, Ridley, Daisy, Simon, Dark Samus, Chrom, and K.Rool placed very high on the ballot polls, like top 20, a most of them have been in demand for years. He even went ahead and made ATs out of characters that were in high demand that were 3rd party as well to satisfy those people, like Bomberman and Shovel Knight.

The ONLY exception to this rule so far is Richter, and that's cause he's basically a near 1:1 clone of Simon, and seemingly a potential request from inside the dev team that's easy to fulfill, considering how much love Castlevania got in the music side of things.

Yeah, these are agreements that people come to. You can't force Sakurai to work for free to advertise your game. He has to agree to do it to, it's not compelled, again, they're not God. Smash is a big enough franchise to merit its own standards. If Sakurai, as director, sees that there's more benefit overall to adding in popular 3rd party characters than a new Pokemon, he'll have the ultimate say in that matter.

We can agree to disagree, but unlike you, I admit I could be wrong. Personally, I'm not convinced it will CERTAINLY happen. That's a logical fallacy. It COULD happen, but it's not absolute. And many people erroneously assume it is.

You know, I would've accepted that explanation...... IF Yoshi was in the Rivals trailer alongside Mario. But he wasn't.

Anyways, as much as I want Boshi if they were gonna give my boi a rival for completionists sake, Kamek seems the more likely
It doesn't help that Yoshi represents his own series, instead of the Super Mario Bros. series.

With that said, I feel that outside of Assist Trophy roles, or minor cameos, Yoshi won't be getting anyone else to represent the Yoshi's Island series.

Regarding the "Villains" theme.

I don't think they're going out of their way to add villains to fill a quota. They're going out of their way to add fan requests, and, serendipitously, a lot of them are villains. A good marketing hook doesn't usually get handed to you on a platter like that, so of course they'd run with it.

That's for people like you that Sakurai made that Option to hide Echoes on the CSS.
Now Zelda have 6 and FE 5. Happy?

I'm surpised that of all the Zelda characters to choose, they went with Skull Kid. (this is implying his AT isn't present for a reason). Definitely not complaining, but you had some other flair as options.

I think the three most likely newcomers now are Skull Kid, Isabelle, and Shadow. All three are popular characters that were Assist Trophies back in Smash 4, yet all three of them have made it past two rounds of Assist Trophy deconfirmations. In their stead, we've seen the Moon from The Legend of Zelda, Kapp'n from Animal Crossing, and Knuckles from Sonic the Hedgehog.

Plus, in Shadow's case, Richter Belmont confirmed that 3rd Parties are able fair game for clone characters. Chrom being a clone of Roy while having one different move, being Ike's Up Special, makes me thing Isabelle could end up as a clone as well.

Of course, the same could be said for Dixie Kong. Just make her a Diddy Kong clone with her helicopter hair as an Up Special, but I feel that if she was in, we would've seen her make an appearance alongside King K. Rool.

A misleading figure, though. Zelda has its main cast repeated in every single game. Fire Emblem rarely has direct sequels and introduces brand new protagonists with each new timeline. And while Zelda keeps its minor characters simple and often repeats them, each FE game comes with a ****ton of minor characters with involved backstories and character moments.

Zelda has been the bigger franchise, but FE just... has more to pick from and represent. Not that I agree with the ones they picked, but FE having more than Zelda isn't unreasonable considering the numbers.

You know, I was thinking. Just a few days ago we were goofing off and making Richter and Dracula conversations because we thought the situation absurd...

And now look what happened :yoshi:
And like Pyra Pyra , I become an accidental prophet for a day...
Richter even got to say the line in the trailer, just slightly paraphrased.
It's actually a slightly more accurate variation of what he should have said, it seems.
Original English Translation - Richter: Die, monster! You don't belong in this world!
Original Japanese (Translated) - Richter: Begone! This world is not yours to live in!

He says "Begone! You don't belong in this world!"

It sort of reminds me of the Woolseyisms from Final Fantasy IV and VI, and how they still get in the games to this day (where sensible).

I kind of want to see Viridi become playable just so I can see her fight Chrom, for reasons we all know.

Yeah, I love Fire Emblem Awakening and all (it was my first one), but Chrom is probably my least favorite add of the game yet. I'm happy for those who wanted him, as there were a lot, but for me personally, I'm not that excited about there basically being 4 characters that share nearly 70% the same moveset.

I honestly think I would've been more okay with it if he were an Echo of Ike, or better yet, his own unique character. Unfortunately, he kinda comes off as a fourth Marth...

Ah well, people are happy he's here, so I'll choose to be happy for them, even if he isn't my cup of tea, lol. :)

That’s because Sakurai found them at least interesting to add (bar echoes) that people will enjoy.

Just because everything seemed to be about fan service doesn’t mean it’s all fan service. We’re likley to get content from recent stuff as seen by BOTW, Odyssey, Splatoon. The fact that we even have Gen 7 pokeballs means that Sakurai obviously knows about Pokémon Sun and Moon. Meaning he might even a playable character in mind.

That’s why they’re very likely. So don’t take a Sun and Moon pokemon out of the water just because it’s ONLY fan service. It’s not, it’s a mix of both. This same thing goes for Xenoblade Chronicles because it’s in a similar position.

it doesn't look like we are getting more stages... i mean.. 103 was a very specific number, Sakurai couldve said more than 100 stages if he wanted to be more vague.

if no more stages.... then? does it means that we aren't getting new franchise reps? gg isaac, rayman, banjo kazooie, heihachi, rythm heaven rep </3, spring man, sora?

does this means that elma, skull kid, BOTW champion, Incineroar, Bandana dee, and other potential newcomers already franchise chances went up? I still think we are getting 2/3 new newcomers top.

Saw them talking on gamefaqs about it. Loz and vegghead mentioned something about it. Might just be paraphrasing on their part.
Pretty sure neither Loz nor Verg knew about the dump of info today.

Verg only knows 2 characters, and neither hinted at stuff like Richter, Chrom or Dark Samus.

I think Disney's more on board with Sora in Smash than Square is, although Square seems to have loosened up a bit recently as well.

Jesus, Negan, what the hell was up with that, lol.

How in the ****? What? Why? Also, isn't Noctis in T7 as well (and why tf is it Noctis and not Tifa? - seriously, shoulda been Noctis in SoCalVI and Tifa for T7 - how could they drop the ball that bad on that one?).
Obviously Square's saving Tifa for Dead or Alive. Uh, don't quote me if that actually happens.

Yeah this brings me back to my original Assist Genocide claim. Ashley did get the hammer as I predicted, but there was a lack of other older ATs. I think now is a valid time to speculate about their disappearance since we have a lot more actually shown now.

That being, Isabelle and her relation to Verg. I don't really want her, but her not appearing is definitely a big thonker.

the stage section in the page is up, and show the 103 stages.
Oh wow. All of them at once?

Why did they even bother using stages in daily updates before?
