Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Today's daily Moveset is another cartoon character from one of my favorite shows; Eddy from Ed, Edd, and Eddy!

***Eddy Moveset***

From the hit show "Ed, Edd, and Eddy", the less-than-intelligent, bumbling idiot that is Eddy has somehow found his way to the game of Smash! Eddy uses a cacophony of different toys and gadgets from the cul-de-sac to leave his opponents questioning what they've even witnessed. Eddy is ready to bring his own 'special' flair to the opposition!

Eddy is overall quite speedy despite his lumbering appearance, falling ever so slightly on the higher side of the speed scale. Coinciding with this speed, Eddy is also, surprisingly, pretty light. Eddy's got an above average jump height as well, putting a seriously springy pep in his step. Unfortunately, to balance all of his other superb stats, Eddy's attacks are overall weak in the damage and knock back department. However, Eddy can also attack very quickly to build up damage in a quick period of time to make up for this. Eddy cannot crawl or wall jump either.

Specials:

Neutral Special: Jawbreaker- This is one of Eddy's strongest moves and is a major source of kill power for the character. Once the move is initially used, Eddy will throw out a small jawbreaker towards opponents that does a pathetic 1% if it hits. Once it hits solid ground however, Eddy can then begin to interact with it (the jawbreaker is not a recovery item). While it's still small, Eddy can continue to throw the jawbreaker around, or push it along on the ground. The more it touches solid ground, the bigger the jawbreaker will get as if it were a snowball. Once it reaches a big enough size, Eddy can't pick up the jawbreaker and can only roll it, and it will eventually reach a limit on its size. Eddy can then hit the jawbreaker with his own attacks to knock it into the opponents, which will deal major damage if its big enough. However, be wary as opponents can also interact with the jawbreaker as well, meaning it could backfire on yourself (only Eddy can push it). If the jawbreaker falls off the stage at any point, it will have to be built up again. This makes careful strategy around the maintenance of the jawbreaker vital, just like his addiction to jawbreakers in the show.

Side Special: Lawn Mower Mush- Using this attack will automatically have Eddy hold onto a lawn mower for dear life and blaze straight forward at an intense speed, functioning similarly to Bowser Jr.'s side Special from smash 4. Unlike that attack, however, Eddy can't stop the move nor jump out of it. He can jump off of the mower, though, and he'd better do so if he doesn't want to receive recoil damage for hitting the opponent while on the mower (upwards of 10% to be exact). Eddy can also utilize the mower as an additional recovery move as well, allowing the move to be very dynamic on the battlefield.

Up Special: Eddy's 'Car Wash'- A hose appears that Eddy foolishly puts in his mouth, only for the hose to turn on and rise Eddy up in the air. The move does cover some impressive distance and Eddy can move back and forth while the move is active. However, the move doesn't do any damage, making it a strictly-recovery move.

Down Special: Helmet Head- This move is a very interesting move that changes the Eddy's stats at will. Using the move will put a Football helmet on Eddy's head for a total of 20 seconds. While wearing the helmet, every attack of Eddy's will be GREATLY amplified, allowing Eddy to become a serious powerhouse when he isn't normally. However, due to his increased clumsiness in this state, Eddy will receive recoil damage for EVERY move he uses, including those that don't deal damage to others. This makes the move a serious risk that could pay off if he plays his cards right. Once the 20 second duration is up, Eddy will have to wait through a 10 second cooldown before he can put on the helmet again.

Normals:

Jab: Eddy takes a Ping-Pong racket and repeatedly smacks the ball into the opponent. It deals incredibly minor damage at first, but will quickly stack up the longer it lasts.

F-Tilt: Eddy takes candy out of pockets and slings it towards opponents, deals minimal damage but stacks up.

U-Tilt: Eddy swipes upwards with his arm to deal minimal damage, very quick.

D-Tilt: Eddy spins around in a circle, causing damage with his jacket. Move is very quick, which leaves Eddy dizzy for a moment.

Dash Attack: This move has Eddy hop in a wagon and speed through opponents. The move does some decent damage and keeps Eddy's speed up as well.

Smashes:

F-Smash: A pile of leaves appears in front of Eddy as he holds a leaf blower. Once he releases the attack, Eddy will blow the leaves into the opponent with some force. The individual leaves do virtually no damage but, given the sheer amount of leaves, ends up doing a good lot of damage anyway.

U-Smash: Similar to Ness's up Smash, Eddy takes a yo-yo and slings it in the air. Unlike Ness's, though, the attack doesn't go from one side of Eddy to the other. It instead goes straight up in the air a good distance before returning to where it started.

D-Smash: Eddy takes out a baseball bat and swings it on the ground in a circle. One of Eddy's strongest moves, but doesn't have too much range.

Aerials:

N-Air: Eddy spins a yo-yo around him in a quick circular motion.

F-Air: Eddy head butts the opponent with his big head. The move is veeerry slow when its starting up, but has a devastating meteor Smash effect if it hits.

U-Air: Eddy claps the air quickly in an attempt to catch a fly, doing minor damage in exchange for a fast attack.

D-Air: Eddy takes out a fishing rod and slings it down beneath it. The move is incredibly slow I'm start up, and most of the rod does little damage. However, if opponents are hit by the actual hook of the line, they will be met with a guaranteed meteor Smash and will plummeted downwards, essentially a guaranteed kill if used in midair.

B-Air: Eddy slaps behind him in the air. Very minimal damage but incredibly quick.

Grab/Pummel: For the grab, Eddy lunges forward to snatch opponent with his hands. In Pummel, Eddy merely bashes the foe repeatedly with his head while laughing like an idiot.

Throws: For Forward throw, Eddy picks up opponent and rolls them across the ground like a bowling ball. Back throw has Eddy throw opponent between legs and behind him like a Football. Up throw has Eddy dribble opponent on ground like a basketball before throwing them upwards. Down throw has Eddy leap up in the air and spike opponent downwards like a volleyball, meteor smashing them.

Final Smash: Horror Movie Night- Eddy hops in the middle of the screen where a small TV plops down with horror movies playing on it. While it's playing, various shadowy, demonic creatures will come out of the screen and cause havoc to the other players for around 15 seconds or so, all the while Eddy is obliviously watching the TV. Once the time is up, the creatures will return to the TV and Eddy will resume the fight.

Taunts: Up taunt causes Eddy to blow bubble gum, only for it to blow up in his face. Side taunt has Eddy blow up a balloon animal, laugh, and then accidentally pop it. Down taunt has Eddy lie down and sketch on the ground with chalk for a bit before standing up, can actually doge some attack while laying down.

Alts: Eddy's 7 color swaps change his clothing color to match other characters from the show, such as yellow for Rolf, red for Double-D, etc.

Stage: Peach Creek Alley- A basic stage set behind a fence and on a river. The stage doesn't scroll so players have to constantly hop across pieces of debris and trash to stay alive. The various bits of trash have varying effects that will change the way the battle is done in a flash.

Poseidome title: "Dumb, Dumbb, and Dumber"

Hope you all like it! I thought it would be really difficult to make a Moveset for him but it turned out to be pretty easy! I'm still working on the fan game so tomorrow will be another Spongebob character, you're welcome to make bets on who!
Ed's the dumb one. Eddy's the con-man.
Great moveset though!

The Smash! And right side is fine. The left though? Just keep the middle to right.
The layout issue is secondary to the disgusting gradients/color scheme issue, to me.

But yeah, there's no reason to have this layout. Though maybe the idea is "left for Adventure Mode, right for games-and-more, and just hit A to smash". It's still gross that way but maybe there was a philosophy behind it...

As a fake image though, I kinda have to give it credit.

Nintendo has pretty clearly been going for a more modern minimalist style with smash ultimate.

Also they say that the tickets are in the e-shop. How would they know exactly?

Can someone please translate this?
That's kinda gross. It's like someone just kinda made a bunch of basic gradients everywhere.
Which means it's probably real! Just kidding.

For what it's worth, the menu items translate as (clockwise from top-left):
Tickets (top left), Smash!, Online, Games and More, Tournament Mode, Content Store, Adventure Mode (bottom-left)
I translated it myself without realizing most of it was in the reddit post, but here.

Even though I think the leak is fake, it does have renders of characters we haven't see before. So if any of them match later down the road then, welp.

Yeah That don't match at all

We need a graphic designer.

vaanrose vaanrose

Any obvious mistakes?
Actually I could do that for ya right now. It's mostly the shapes of the boxes in this menu. Now we could say that Sakurai's wife isn't designing the menu again... However, I would believe that the boxes for those would be more like the box we see for stage preview and in the character select screen as well.

It's also strange how the menu is laid out as well... While the angled approach could make it more dynamic... it's breaking too many important rules of game UI to look legit. For starters, the whole left section is visually wrong to me... It's almost like everytime you look at it there's something more off about it. From the looks of the menu it also seems to have tons of Animations right off the bat. That would go against Ninendo's new design philosophy when it comes to game UI's now. Even Smash UI design as well. There will be colored animated silhouettes on your left, possibly a scrolling silhouette thing behind the Smash option, and the background.

Also that gradient looks a bit off as well... It is more thought out than the last menu leak lol

EDIT: ALSO NO RED DROP SHADOW OVER THE SMASH OPTION? ITS KIND OF MAKING ME A BID MAD NOW THAT I NOTICED THAT

Hey, just something to note: Japanese Smash never uses スマッシュ (Smash) for any mode at all, it`s always 大乱闘 (Dairantou) since Brawl Melee! at least. So, either the guy who made this got really sloppy or he wanted it to be a very clear fake. Unless of course Sakurai changed that on this title, but I find that veeeery unlikely

This is also true. I thought that was weird when I was analyzing it haha.

A demo title screen isn't indicative of much, that could very well be a placeholder title screen. Remember the E3 2013 Smash 4 demo match with Mega Man vs. Mario, where there wasn't a proper victory screen and it was just a picture of Mega Man's render over the stage? Granted that was a very early version of the game, but nonetheless the title screen isn't something really meant to be seen at this point and thus they could just throw a basic placeholder title screen there before they finalize its design.

Oh hey, something more: ゲームや追加 (Game(s) and additional literally, they were probably going for "Games and More") is also not how they use it in Smash 4, which is いろなあそび (something along the lines of "other things to play") so... yeah, the way they wrote it may be even wrong gramatically lol. Gotta give credit for the photoshop, but I'd say the japanese is pretty sloppy.

The gimmick is that you fight in the middle of a crowded sidewalk trying to squeeze by people so that you can beat your opponent. Also, everytime you pass through somebody they say "EY! IM WALKING HERE!"
Also, expect to see very frequent muggings in New Donk City.

It's cool to watch some random street thug beat another guy's ass to the ground with an assault rifle, but if you get too close to them, then they might start mugging you.

It may be a good guess that the menu for Smash Ultimate may look something like the website...

I'd honestly take either one, but I'd like to see Joker more because I feel like he could bring slightly more to the table in terms of moveset potential.

Yu fights with a sword, and while I'll be the first to say that the "swordfighters are trite and overdone!" argument is stupid, Yu would likely fight similar to Marth, Ike, Robin, and/or Shulk, with the only difference being his ability to summon Personas (Personae?). Most of his attacks would likely incorporate Izanagi, who uses Electric Attacks, which is similar to Pikachu, Pichu, Robin, etc..

Joker fights with a Knife alongside a Gun (It's technically a model gun, so they can work around it), so his normal moves would be more distinct compared to other fighters, as a Knife based moveset hasn't really been done much. Joker's use of a gun is also stylish and flashy compared to realistic, so they could play with that too. Joker can also summon Personas (Personoxen?), but most of his attacks would likely incorporate Arsene, who uses curse/dark attacks, only used so far (at least prominently) by Ganondorf and kind of Robin, in one attack compared to most of his neutral special, aerials, and smash attacks using electricity.

P3 protagonist is a dark horse pick, but I don't know enough about them to comment. I also doubt that they'd get in over the more popular Yu Narukami and Joker. It really depends on whether Atlus/Sega want to go with the tried and true (Persona 4) or the up and coming (Persona 5). I believe they'd go more for relevancy, especially considering how popular Persona 5 is. It's the best selling Persona game, selling 2.2 million units as of last May, and definitely thrust it into the limelight.

Either way, a Persona character is ideal for me, if not for the character, then for the music. You can't tell me these tracks would be great in Smash Bros:

It's all so good.
Alright, you've sold me a bit more on Joker, that shot of his was crazy stylish, if they picked Joker you'd hear no complaints from me. Although, wouldn't it be wild if they hit us with a double reveal trailer, like Robin and Lucina's and gave us Joker and Yu? That'd be epic, despite how unlikely it be.

Also I can't deny the goodness that is the Persona OST. I've listened to some of the Persona 5 tracks, fire by the way, but not Persona 4 or 3, geez I've been missing out. Sakurai should definitely consider putting in these song in Smash.
And then Verge made his statement and everyone is on the InCENAroar train
Not me, I'm flying with Gardevoir Airlines, know for their loyal customer services, then I'm waiting for the boat at the PriMarina to take me to Smash, all owned by the 'Fairy Good Transportation Services'. Who always wishes you a 'Fairy Good' trip.
Pheromosa's a Pokemon

You know what the kicker is, having own both Sun and Moon, I know who she is, but I shamefully misread it as Phosphora instead of Pheromosa cause of how exciting it'd be to have the most popular KI character in Smash. Hahaha *sob*

Also, he's clearly allowing his favored character to be jobbing, for the sake of the fanbase. In a perfect world, Glass Joe would serve that purpose in How to Play.

You know, I was thinking, Sega did buy Atlus a while ago, which could theoretically make negotiations for SMT/Persona/Jack Frost content a lot easier.
That's kinda the basis behind it. Nintendo and Sega are best buddies, and after Sonic and Bayonetta they lack truly notable series (Puyo Puyo has been gaining popularity recently, but falls way behind the former two). SMT/Persona is a series with close ties to Nintendo and strong worldwide popularity. I really wanted Nintendo to buy out Atlas when the news came out, but Sega's the next best thing. WAY better than Microsoft or Sony.

I think Joker/Yu Narukami is really likely as DLC, if not as part of the base roster.

So DaybreakHorizon DaybreakHorizon how many leaks are there in that gigantic list of yours that have Simon, Isabelle, and a Gen VII Pokemon that is not Decidueye, Mimikyu, or Lycanroc?

I ask because a guy by the name of Lupensko (Was that it? I can't remember the name) said that a real leak was actually out in the wild on 4chan. Apparently there's reason to believe this guy.

Man, wouldn't it be hilarious if Yu was revealed for Smash Ultimate though?

It's already been more than 10 years since Persona 4's release, and Yu has already appeared in one crossover this year (BBTAG), and he's going to be featured in another one later on (Persona Q2 in November). Imagine Yu appearing in A THIRD crossover just in this year alone.

Persona 4 really does never die.

Gotta wonder sometimes how JYB and Yuri Lowenthal feel about voicing Yu and Yosuke for the past 10 years. Yukiko's VA too, though I don't remember her name.

Main problems with the menu are:
1. The smash ultimate aesthetic is very clearly "black background, coloured font". This is prominent in everything. The CSS background and stage select background is black. There's some of this in the menu "leak" but not really in the right places.
2. This menu is an absolute mess, navigation wise. Even Smash 4 has the menu buttons cascading down. There is almost no structure to this at all. Just buttons all over the place, navigating it with a controller would be hell. This is in contrast to how rigid the ultimate stage select and CSS screen look.
3. The grid background isn't present in the CSS or stage select menu and the gradient is different, they have the colours roughly the same but not the design.
4. There is a very clear "boxy" theme going on, in both the CSS and stage select everything is boxy and straight, except where one corner is tapered off, which is missing from this design too. Smash 4 had similar designs to the buttons across all menus, they were way rounder.
5. The glow border around the boxes is odd. The amount of glow you're getting across the buttons is wildly inconsistent, and doesn't really match up with the one instance in the stage select where theres a glow at all..

Are you talking about the Smash Ballot? Or the Sega fanpoll they held?

I'd lean more towards a Persona/SMT rep given the series' popularity over Puyo Puyo.

Sakurai said this in regards to third parties:
Final Fantasy (FF below) is one of the few uniquely Japanese game series revered by players around the world. I think fans across the globe have hoped a character from one of those series would appear in Smash, so it was only a matter of time. At the same time, there are only so many big-name titles we can work with at this point—mainly because we’ve covered most of those bases. Aside from the major globally-recognized franchises already featured in Smash, there really aren’t that many left.
Puyo Puyo isn't necessarily popular worldwide. It's big in Japan, sure, but you don't hear much about it outside of Japan. Compare how big Shin Megami Tensei and Persona, with Persona 5 winning multiple Game of the Year awards in 2017 from notable American publications like Polygon, and I think it's more likely to see a character from one of those series.

Of course, this is assuming that SMT/Persona is one of the few "major globally-recognized franchises," which it may very well not be.

Would love to have these guys in like a Pokémon Trainer fashion. Even if it would be retreading that gimmick, it would absolutely be worth it imo.
Plus the fact that they wouldn't even need a middleman; just have them poof into the character the player needs. Also, the irony of Kirby having hats of them.

Of course, this is assuming that SMT/Persona is one of the few "major globally-recognized franchises," which it may very well not be.
I'm honestly starting to wonder if we're not putting too much stock into those words. What Japan/Sakurai thinks what the globally-recognized franchises are may not necessarily be what we think are those. Also, we don't exactly know how few are left, exactly.
