IMPRESSIONS TIME!
I've finally had time to get all of my notes together and after about 6 turns over these two days I can finally say some stuff about the game.
First of all, it is capital G gorgeous. The colors, the little attention to details, it's all breathtaking. This is the best looking Switch game so far, in my view. Going with Unreal Engine 4 was the right choice, for my money. The videos on YouTube don't do it justice, this needs to be seen on an HD TV. Getting my hands on it for the very first time is something I don't feel I can experience again. It was magical. No doubt in my mind, this is the best controlling, best feeling Smash, ever. After Wii U, I didn't feel it could get even better, but they did it. They actually did it. Every hit feels painful. I winced a couple of times. The sound effects feel a lot more substantial, when you're in trouble, the visual indicator gets that across way easier, and don't get me started on the speed. Don't let those videos fool you, it's quite a bit faster than Smash 4, that shouldn't be understated. Some of the matches I saw today, pros against pros, seriously almost looked like Melee matches in terms of speed. It's easier than ever to pick up speed and keep it.
As for characters I played, you've all probably heard most of this before but I'll do my best to summarize. I started with old faithful, Mario. There's a reason he won that tournament, and it's not just because of Zero being so good, he was already high tier in Smash 4, but he seems even better here. His jumps are better, he's obviously much faster, his aerial game has been buffed and I think his final smash is finallllyyyy good. It has an "extra kick" to it, for a more apt term. I'm definitely hoping he remains high tier, at the very least. The only flaw I saw is that Fludd is still basically useless, it also It definitely feels like Cappy is just a visual thing added in late.
Second character I played as was Sonic, the blue ******* is so outrageously fast to the point where there was a minute or so where I ran around the stage and literally no one could catch me. Lol. He feels even stronger than Smash 4, the lack of a projectile or new moves sucks, but it's definitely feeling like he can reliably KO characters with no problem now, there's less lag in most of his moves, but maybe it's just me, but Super Sonic feels like it's gone back to being broken again, lol. Every single time I saw it used, that was three lives gone, easily. It tears **** up, period. Much like Mario, I'm confident Sonic will be high tier again. He's very good.
Next, I tried out Link, and I can say he might have one of the biggest buffs in Smash history. He's almost a new character in many aspects. It looks like very special care went into him. He's faster, he's hits a lot harder, and all of his old moves have at last one new change to them. The remote bomb is nifty and places strategy at the forefront, it was sort of hard to get hang of, but once you get the timing right, it's soooo satisfying. The new blade beam attack is awesome, his grab is much better, and his bow attack got a huge buff due to two arrows being shot now. I can safely say that this is the best Link has ever felt. I think his tournament placement chances are looking good. He was a blast to play as.
Mega Man more or less is the same from Smash 4. He was a very technical kind of character, and he still is. The Mega Buster is very much buffed, Leaf Shield is much better, nowhere near as awful, but he's much faster which helps, because he wasn't very fast in Smash 4, at all. His aerial game is still on the "alright" side, but all of his specials seem to have gotten slight buffs. Not sure where he's going to place in tournaments, honestly. It could go either way, still excited and going to try him again later on today.
Inkling was the other character I tried, I'm going to wait to try him again later on today as well so I can fully understand him. But I will say i loved everything I've played of them so far. They're perfect for Smash and they bring a lot to the table.
So...yeah. Guys, this is going to be the Smash game. I walked out of the hotel positively glowing. I'm going right back in for more tomorrow and Sunday to get as much as I can. I need it. Now.
