Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Gotta learn to seperate the artist from the work

So here's a question for everyone. If a Tales Of character gets in and it's NOT Lloyd, who would it be?

My bet's on Yuri Lowell from Tales of Vesperia. Though that may just be my desire to hear Fury Sparks in Smash acting up.

It's either going to be Lloyd or Yuri. Lloyd has the most prominence with Nintendo, and Yuri is one of, if not the most popular Tales of character.

I guess Luke is possible, but I'd say very unlikely though I'd like to see him.

Maybe if I buy enough bagels, my most wanted character will get into Smash. That's how it works, right?
I fully expect, like, only 5% of the people here will even get this reference. XD

I, too, am guilty of the crime of unrealistic expectations. Forgive me, Sakurai, for I have sinned.

I’d rather just stick with Lloyd. We already got so many sword wielders,

BUT..

We never got dual wielding sword fighters. :troll:

Wait, I think Yuri is also dual wields swords, right? Heh, I like Lloyd’s design better. Tbh, if any Tales of character gets in, it’s probably Lloyd, but Yuri comes in at a close second.

I still fully expect chrom and shadow to be in the game as echo fighters.

Simon Belmont as the retro character inclusion.

A new Pokemon rep maybe even two so a starter from the new gen and a legendary .

And Rayman as the surprise 3rd party hype inclusion.

Snake clones as eco fighters hopefully but I doubt it

Krystal 0 chance she has fallen into utter obscurity and is irrelevant.

I would love to see Lyn, Eliwood, and Hector in the game as echo fighters. But they're probably irrelevant now.

I don't see Phoenix Wright being in this game as he was already In a fighting game, I also don't want Waluigi in the game as I think he has a limited moveset and mario characters are the most boring imo.

Other than that I'm not expecting too much more, if I get at least those fighters I will be extremely happy with the game, also please buff Falco Sakurai considering how nerfed Fox is in smash ultimate.

Listen my two most wanted newcomers are a nameless protagonist of a niche 1990's JRPG that's grimdark as hell and overshadowed by both its mascot and its sister series and a female swordswoman from a 15 year old game constantly deconfirmed as an assist trophy.

yeah lol I agree that she should be a unique fighter but I'd rather she appears as an echo fighter than a assist trophy. I can just see her getting the Lucina treatment tbh

I wake up every day and check YouTube and Twitter for anything that might even just point to new Smash Ultimate news. The announcement of a Direct, a new interview with Sakurai, anything.

I'd rather an assist trophy than permanently shackled to being another Marth clone. It disgusts me to no end.
Especially when she can do coolest **** like this:

Seriously, how the heck do I crop videos at certain snippets?
Right click inside the video at the point you want the video to start at when you share, and click "copy video URL at current time".

Legitimate question on Elma:

Isn't she not actually the main character in her game? Never played Xenoblade X but I heard there's an avatar in that game similar to Robin in Awakening. Is there any reason to believe Elma could go the way of Chrom and be shafted in favor of the Avatar character?

I know a very prominent member of the Smash community who shares your pain. Lamentation of Lyndis, thy name is Alpharad.

Legit the video that got me to sub.
Anyway as for the video bit, press "share" and it'll give you a link. There'll be a box that says "start at X time". Click that and the vid will start at the pause point.

If you're on mobile you'll have to manually type into the URL after the link "&t=[insert amount of seconds] here.

It's not that competitive players dislike DLC. It's more of that these characters have much better options and buttons vs the majority of the cast as if they were designed to be good in the competitive scene. If more characters had moves that flow into each other as good as most DLC or wasn't dysfunctional than I believe Cloud and Bayonetta wouldn't have been as suffocating to play against. Even Ryu has buttons, corrin has instant pin, safe bair, etc. Compare Bayonetta down-tilt vs Zero Suit and you will see the difference in viable tools dramatically.

Thanks for that, but that's what I've been doing for where I want the videos to start. I need to know how I can get the videos to end after a certain time, it'll make it quicker for the people watching to get back to their business.

Probably not, Sakurai wanted to include Chrom but just felt his moveset wasn't unique enough so opted for Robin instead

Yeah, its hard to make his concept actually good when your punished as a player for using his sword or trying to space. Counterintuitive toolkit sadly. Lets consider Roy the experiment that went horribly wrong lol. Sakurai actually stated he intended to make Cloud very good lol.

No, Elma is the main character of XCX. She's just not the protagonist or should I say, player character.

Unlike Robin, we actually control a literal nobody who has no bearing on the plot and does nothing substantial or worthwhile throughout. She is the leader of your squad and anything you do is accredited to her. Hell, they don't even have support conversations that flesh out their personality like someone like Robin. On top of that, they have no defined skill-set being able to go down 6 separate paths as opposed to Robin who has an explicit focus on magic+swords. On top of that Cross is a silent protagonist with a DOZEN "grunting" options which makes him even harder to adapt.

Elma doesn't have these issues as
1. She's the main focus of the story and from whom we spend the most time talking about
2. Has a defined skillset with her dual gun+dual swords and her DPS focused arts
3. Has a definite personality
4. Has a recognizable defined appearance
5. Has a canonical super-weapon as a final smash (her personal mech)
6. Speaks A LOT. so much talking. Just shut up already

(I know a depressingly large amount about a character I don't like...)

IMPRESSIONS TIME!

I've finally had time to get all of my notes together and after about 6 turns over these two days I can finally say some stuff about the game.

First of all, it is capital G gorgeous. The colors, the little attention to details, it's all breathtaking. This is the best looking Switch game so far, in my view. Going with Unreal Engine 4 was the right choice, for my money. The videos on YouTube don't do it justice, this needs to be seen on an HD TV. Getting my hands on it for the very first time is something I don't feel I can experience again. It was magical. No doubt in my mind, this is the best controlling, best feeling Smash, ever. After Wii U, I didn't feel it could get even better, but they did it. They actually did it. Every hit feels painful. I winced a couple of times. The sound effects feel a lot more substantial, when you're in trouble, the visual indicator gets that across way easier, and don't get me started on the speed. Don't let those videos fool you, it's quite a bit faster than Smash 4, that shouldn't be understated. Some of the matches I saw today, pros against pros, seriously almost looked like Melee matches in terms of speed. It's easier than ever to pick up speed and keep it.

As for characters I played, you've all probably heard most of this before but I'll do my best to summarize. I started with old faithful, Mario. There's a reason he won that tournament, and it's not just because of Zero being so good, he was already high tier in Smash 4, but he seems even better here. His jumps are better, he's obviously much faster, his aerial game has been buffed and I think his final smash is finallllyyyy good. It has an "extra kick" to it, for a more apt term. I'm definitely hoping he remains high tier, at the very least. The only flaw I saw is that Fludd is still basically useless, it also It definitely feels like Cappy is just a visual thing added in late.

Second character I played as was Sonic, the blue ******* is so outrageously fast to the point where there was a minute or so where I ran around the stage and literally no one could catch me. Lol. He feels even stronger than Smash 4, the lack of a projectile or new moves sucks, but it's definitely feeling like he can reliably KO characters with no problem now, there's less lag in most of his moves, but maybe it's just me, but Super Sonic feels like it's gone back to being broken again, lol. Every single time I saw it used, that was three lives gone, easily. It tears **** up, period. Much like Mario, I'm confident Sonic will be high tier again. He's very good.

Next, I tried out Link, and I can say he might have one of the biggest buffs in Smash history. He's almost a new character in many aspects. It looks like very special care went into him. He's faster, he's hits a lot harder, and all of his old moves have at last one new change to them. The remote bomb is nifty and places strategy at the forefront, it was sort of hard to get hang of, but once you get the timing right, it's soooo satisfying. The new blade beam attack is awesome, his grab is much better, and his bow attack got a huge buff due to two arrows being shot now. I can safely say that this is the best Link has ever felt. I think his tournament placement chances are looking good. He was a blast to play as.

Mega Man more or less is the same from Smash 4. He was a very technical kind of character, and he still is. The Mega Buster is very much buffed, Leaf Shield is much better, nowhere near as awful, but he's much faster which helps, because he wasn't very fast in Smash 4, at all. His aerial game is still on the "alright" side, but all of his specials seem to have gotten slight buffs. Not sure where he's going to place in tournaments, honestly. It could go either way, still excited and going to try him again later on today.

Inkling was the other character I tried, I'm going to wait to try him again later on today as well so I can fully understand him. But I will say i loved everything I've played of them so far. They're perfect for Smash and they bring a lot to the table.

So...yeah. Guys, this is going to be the Smash game. I walked out of the hotel positively glowing. I'm going right back in for more tomorrow and Sunday to get as much as I can. I need it. Now.

It's great that you enjoyed the game, but Ultimate is not running on Unreal Engine. The Unreal info at the end of the E3 Direct was for all the games they showed during the Direct that do run on Unreal, like Fortnite or Dragon Ball FighterZ. The Unreal info is not present at the end of the Ultimate reveal's upload, nor is any Unreal copyright present on the website.

Speaking of the hit sound effects I really like how forceful and exaggerated the sounds are in the game, it makes you feel powerful when you’re on the attack. It reminds me of the onomatopoeias in these:

Yooka-Laylee have been confirmed as playable in Brawlout.

I know it's not Smash news but we don't have much else.

Good on Yooka-Laylee. It's something.

Speaking of Yokai Watch, isn't it not doing so well sales wise right now? (Like, someone posted an image of YW merch in a bargain bin many pages back).

It seems like it was a bit of a fad? If that's true.
So much for "Pokemon killer".
Every Level-5 series is a fad. Even Layton.

I would recommend checking out Nintendo Life as well, it's a convenient spot.

I got some pics of the Japanese Ultimate Pamphlet. Sorry but I had to fold it in and put in my pocket. I picked it up at the gaming section at the super center store we go to for groceries. It’s kind of out in the mountains so it’s not like....Tokyo. So them having this flier was kind of surprising considering.

Also sorry about the lightning. It being folded and not having much time to take it made the pictures not the best. I also want to mention the last time I saw this in Japan was when the full roster was revealed for Smash 4. :x. Same sort of pamphlet with some printed information on characters.

Well, as we saw in Ridley's trailer, they went through the trouble to make a new intro for the Smash newcomer trailers. That suggests we're getting a few more newcomers.

I wouldn't get worried just yet. The entire focus of Smash at E3 was the returning characters and stages. There's still a bunch of material we haven't seen yet, such as the different modes and new stages.
