Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

YOUR REACTION

That a character from Shounen Jump were announced, and it wasn't Goku, but Arale from Dr. Slump

Initially, absolute unbridled elation, until that wears off and I feel utter despair over the fact that my poor robo-daughter will be at the receiving end of so much flak from bitter Smash fans.

It's bad enough being a staunch supporter of her for FighterZ and having to hear endless arguments about how generic movie villain #439 would be a much better pick. Grumble grumble.

I personally only want Ashley in the game so that they can be matched up together whether it's in a story mode, reveal trailer or even just in pics on the site. They're basically the same character lol.
Ashley does have a creepy doll (even though her song says she doesn't play with dolls).

It fits perfectly!

I don't see how it's the same thing at all.
Also, I grew out of this mentality.
Giving you the benefit of the doubt on this change I'll put it this way.

You use to bad mouth the likes of Mimikyu and talk this and that and you never once considered the feelings of the people who supported him with your claims, but the moment you see a lot of ''Decidueye isn't as likely as people think" and ''Grass starter."

You want to ignore people because it hurts your feelings about your character.

It's quite similar really and not really the most healthy or mature way to handle it all.

Smash For has one more JRPG character than Brawl.

EDIT: If you only count newcomers, they have same.
I meant to clarify that I was talking about "proportionate" humans from JRPGs specifically as opposed to JRPG characters in general, since my post was all about "proportionate" human designs and Ness, Lucas and the Pokemon characters are all cartoony characters.

Jumping on the "humanoid newcomer thing". This is gunna be super debatable, but I'm looking for anime/realistic human additions, not cartoony.
Smash 64: :ultsamus::ultfalcon::ultlink:(25% of newcomers)
Melee::ultganondorf::ultmarth::ultsheik::ultroy::ultyounglink::ultzelda:(40%)
Brawl::ultike::ultpit::ultsnake::ultzss:(25% (Pokemon Trainer is 1)
4::ultbayonetta::ultcloud::ultcorrin::ultlittlemac::ultlucina::ultpalutena::ultdarkpit::ultrobin:ultryu::ultshulk:
(50% (Mii Fighter is 1)
Ultimate: None so far.

Yea this all goes by what you are considering. For example Kid Icarus could go more cartoony...but Palutena is way anime/realistic. And what point are the Mario Princesses considered realisitc enough? Also you have to include Zelda characters if you're considering Fire Emblem/Kid Icarus. All except Too Link are very realistic humanoid characters.

4 added a lot of realistic human characters, but so did Melee. I'll probably do one on humanoid vs not.
Interesting. I'd argue the Pokemon Trainer should really count as three separate characters and his three Pokemon definitely aren't humans in designs so the percentage would be more like 22.2% which is the lowest. Also, the Mii fighters are pretty cartoony, so I wouldn't count them, but Smash 4 would still have the most amount of "proportionate" human designs, so it wouldn't really make that much of a difference.

3 of the 5 are Pokemon, Fire Emblem, and Xenoblade.
Everyone loves talking about Fire Emblem and Xenoblade!:troll:

Simon Belmont, Mimikyu, and Ashley are all pretty likely.

They'd also all make for a very good halloween reveal too... I wonder who, if any of them (or all of them), would get a special halloween reveal?

Ashley pairs well with Bayonetta, Mimikyu, Luigi, Simon Belmont, Geno, Shadow, and of course Wario.

A lot of potentially discussed newcomers and veterans go well with her for a reveal trailer.

With that Pokémon argument seemingly resolved, I've got another session of "leaks" for ya'll. No bonus "leak" this time though,

Hello Smash Bros fans, we have some leaks to do:

Fighters:
>King K Rool
>Ashley
>Geno
>Decidueye
>Spring Man
>Steve (Minecraft)
>Birdo

Echo Fighters:
>Dixie Kong (Diddy Kong)
>Roll (Mega Man)
>Shadow the Hedgehog (Sonic)
>Metal Mario (Mario)
>Dark Samus (Samus)
>Dry Bowser (Bowser)
>Isabelle (Villager)
>Funky Kong (Donkey Kong)

Assist Trophies:
>Boom Boom
>Off the Hooks
>Pom Pom
>Bob (Garo)
>Fishy Boopkins (Spike)
>Egg Pawn
>Infinite the Jackal (Zero the Jackal)

Stages:
>Sarasaland
>Ashley's Mansion
>Radical Highway

Spring Man when the roster was decided in 2015? Off the Hooks? B I R D O ? ? ?
Smash Ultimate newcomers will be revealed throughout the rest of the year. These newcomers are:
>King K. Rool (a heavyweight who focuses on power)
>Geno (a character who focuses more on long range, but is good with close range attacks)
>Simon Belmont (his whip makes for an interesting moveset, the whip is good for long range attacks but it also has a sweet spot for close range attacks)
>Decidueye (definitely a character who likes to fight from long range)
>Heihachi (a very good close range character, nothing much else to say)

Simon Belmont and King K. Rool will be revealed in a Nintendo direct coming July 27th. They will be revealed at the end of the direct with K. Rool shown first then Simon Belmont revealed after. Heihachi will be revealed at EVO at the end of the Super Smash Bros WiiU finals. Decidueye and Geno will be revealed during another “50 Fact Extravaganza” similar to the one for Smash 4. This time the 50 fact extravaganza will focus on the stages and music with short segments going into more detail about the new mechanics and will reveal a new story mode that is pretty mush a toned down subspace with Tabuu coming back as the villain.

The DLC characters will be revealed a couple months after the initial release and will be released throughout 2019. These characters are:
>Rex & Pyra (they work similarly to the ice climbers)
>Shadow (he’s VERY similar to Sonic but has a lot of differences to be classified as his own character)
>Waluigi (he is the joke character of this game and will be released a couple months after the game is released. He also comes with a Mario Tennis Aces stage)
>Elma (she will be released as the last DLC character to finish up the roster)

Only four DLC characters?

So yesterday, me and two other raters at the ESRB were given access to a video "presentation" of Smash Ultimate. Unfortunately for job security I was unable to get any photo or video evidence of what I saw, but you can choose to listen to me or not.
First off, I was told that development is mostly finished now, with the exception of bug testing and tweaking. The ESRB takes leaks very seriously (especially after the last game), so I will be brief.
There were 6 new characters I saw.
Banjo Kazooie was in one of the battles. It was like some sort of adventure mode but it was multiplayer competitive. Banjo had an attack involving Kazooie pooping out eggs. (We have to mark off things like that).
I also saw Simon Belmont, who was fighting against Bowser, Snake, and Louie. Simon used his whip in a lot of his attacks, as well as Castlevania weapons like the Cross throw and Potion.
There was another character who I missed the name of who had purple hair. She was only shown off during a montage of gameplay modes.
I saw Isabelle from Animal Crossing show up, but she used all the same moves as Villager, just "dantier" I guess.
They had someone named Masked Man (not sure what game he's from, maybe Earthbound). He had a sword and used lightning attacks.
Finally I saw Paper Mario in a mode where you work with Master Hand for prizes. He uses his partners from the N64 game and throws Stickers.
I'll answer any questions you guys have but namely I was not shown a picture of the full roster. I saw a select screen that was incomplete and only had a few characters.

The first decent leak of the bunch. Interesting framing device (ESRB employee) and the guy seems to know his stuff. Good job Mr. leaker man. You get a gold star.
Hi everyone. I know you’re probably sick of leaks but received a message from someone I know a trust who has connections with Nintendo-related groups. He sent me some information he heard about Smash Ultimate and made it in the form of clues. Not sure why. Here’s some of the contents of the message:

1. A villain who debuted in 1994.
2. A fighting game character who debuted in 1992.
3. An echo character of the original 12.
4. An additional rep from a represented 3rd party
5. A flagship character from a yet to be represented 3rd party
6. A promoted assist trophy
7. An echo of a 3rd party character that was previously a trophy
8. An echo whose design is taken from the Wii era.
9. An echo of one of the Pokémon.
10. A character who debuted in 2015.

He said that’s not the whole roster but that’s what he received info on. Not sure if true but I forwarded it to here just in case.

Vague puzzle leak, but it's comprehensible, so it gets a pass. Interesting that it seems to hint at a Mortal Kombat character.

My personal guesses:
1. K. Rool
2. Sub-Zero/Scorpion
3. Dark Samus
4. Simon Belmont
5. Rayman/Steve/Banjo-Kazooie (Take your pick)
6. Ashley
7. Shadow
8. Captain Raibow (?)
9. Igglybuff/Mega Charizard/Shadow Mewtwo/Zeraora
10. Elma
Hello, I'm a former Nintendo Employee and I just recently got fired so this is my way of say "screw you Nintendo". I've honestly had enough.

So near the end of July there is going to be a mini direct with a live stream for Mario Tennis Aces talking about some new features. Also one big title that everybody can't wait for is Super Smash Brothers Ultimate. At the end of the live stream of Mario Tennis Aces they will reveal a new fighter and it will be Castlevania's Simon Belmont. Also there will be old modes coming back and some new ones. The new modes coming back are "Smash Run" , "Hit the Targets" & "Smash Tour" . They are making Smash Tour a bit more fun, also another addition is just like how it would ask if you want a CPU to fight for you, now it asks if you want an amiibo to fight for you. So now you have those two options. So that's all of the content you will get for July. I might post all of the new comers so look out for that.

It's got a kill switch, so that's nice. Smash Tour coming back would also be nice because I actually liked that mode (I'm the only one I guess :()
Another set of leaks that know DLC rosters already... Where to they get this?

Also an ESRB framing device? The ESRB won't get the game until right before it's done...so probably not until September...

And how many of these fake leaks are using a "I'm a former employee of X company but F them I'm leaving!" as a framing device? Surprising that most of them don't consider that the big company working this would be a specific division of Nintendo, not Nintendo as a whole, and is also based in Japan so if that were the case, they'd be more likely to leak text either in Japanese or with Google Translate flaws...

No, it's not because it "hurts my feelings". It's because it's an unbearable display of ignorance.
Also I never mentioned "Decidueye isn't as likely as people think" as something that makes me want to ignore people, or even argued against it. I frankly think it was overrated before E3, and I always did.
You're just making stuff up.
But that's enough internet for today, I'm going to bed.

At least it's not as bad that one day we were talking about Dora the explorer being a playable character
I mean you DID start that, but whatever I guess.

But Murlough is right, the topics have been extremely inconsistent, no one is to blame, it’s moreso the lack of anything new and substancial we’ve gotten from the blog posts.

I'm not familiar enough with Japanese culture to expect a Halloween reveal. Like I know there's the Halloween event in Animal Crossing so they're atleast familiar with it. Honestly free candy seems very American XD

On that note though there's never been a reveal or any real news tied to a holiday. I think we had a star related picture around Christmas and I remember for Brawl the Summit Stage was announced with a Pumpkin on it lol.

There should be a WTF echo character who is an echo of a character you would ever expect.
Blaziken as a Falcon echo is actually something I think would be pretty cool.

I suppose you're right, but is this all there is?
Cycling through the same topics over and over until we get something new?
I wasn't here for Brawl and 4 so I don't know the average Smash hype season.
Not to say I don't like it here, but thank God the game's out in a a few months because I couldn't stand two years of this.
Nah, we get to scream at each other once something actually gets revealed. **** will be hilarious I imagine.

OOOOOF. I didn't even consider that. I was soooo banking on a Halloween reveal, too.

As I said in my previous post, i’ve kind of come around in terms of my thoughts on Geno. I really don’t think he’s super likely, but I have to say...he’d probably be dope to play.

It may have been the fact that I have been listening to select tracks from Super Mario RPG and remembered fond moments of playing that game. Geno is a rather niche character to the wider population, but it’s definitely notable that Sakurai has taken notice of him. What I will say, is that Geno would probably be really, really fun to play as. I support him, but do not necessarily expect him.

Similar to Geno, my thoughts have changed on Pokémon. Decidueye has always been my number one pick, and I wasn’t a huge fan of Incineroar. However, the image of Incineroar running toward an opponent, and performing my idea of a dash attack made me actually laugh...I envisioned Incineroar running at an opponent, then kind of turning around as he/she passed the opponent, grabs them, and then suplexes them.

Yeah, it might call back to something like Brock Lesnar (boring imo) but I think I’m totality Incineroar could be fun... and an especially fun Heel-like character. Then that final Smash...Dankest Lariat (/s).

The whole thing with imagery in Smash speculation is that i’m not sure everybody is necessarily able to see the same things in particular characters. While I can clearly see Incineroar or Decidueye working out, I myself struggle to envision things for Mimikyu. I don’t have an EV trained Mimikyu (I want one tbh), but I feel like I myself (and other fans) might need to see examples, whether from the anime or games themselves. I’m not saying he can’t work or anything, but I can see where people who say that are coming from.

I do believe a lot of Smash fans like what they like, and a feel a sense of loyalty to what they like. That’s okay! But at the same time, it would benefit everybody a bit (imo) to at least keep an open mind. I was fortunate in getting what I wanted from this game (no cuts, Snake back, despite my doubts getting FREAKING RIDLEY) right away, and i’ve obviously come into this thread and said, “Hey, don’t hate on x character!”, but I really, really think having an open mind will help temper expectations and heighten the hype levels for this game.

You can either not get as butthurt at being wrong about something and love what you get, or you could be one of those people who claims they’ll boycott the game they’ve been talking with friends and strangers about consistently for the last few months. What sounds more fun?

Granted, I am an English teacher (if you can’t tell from the use of imagery lol), but I do think giving people a visual component can really help create a better idea of what characters can do. A text post can only do so much!

Friend. Welcome to Smashboards. Here there are apparently exactly 5 subjects and they will all be repeated verbatiam and that's that.

3 of the 5 are Pokemon, Fire Emblem, and Xenoblade.
Everyone loves talking about Fire Emblem and Xenoblade!:troll:
Y'all need to catch up because Xenoblade barely gets any discussion here these days. Leaks and echo fighters are clearly the new hotness all the kids here go crazy for!

Gonna be honest, I don't really care for Incineroar that much, but if it gets in, and one of its moves is a German Suplex, then I would straight up not mind at all.

Like, even if I end up disliking the way it plays, if it has a move that does that, I wouldn't even care about that at all.

Daddy? You came back?

Oh come on, that's how a lot of "fans" of characters react to newcomers.
That's perfectly natural. We all have our internal move-sets and when characters don't match them it can be disappointing.

Thanks for the laugh really needed it.

But for real any so called "leak" that has DLC in it is ****ing rubbish
I think the “Screw you Nintendo” leak was the funniest, I like how recent fake leaks use getting fired and having animosity towards the company as their reason to spill leaks like what?

On this day one month ago: Nintendo officially revealed Super Smash Bros Ultimate.

About one or two weeks later I decided to start the 4chan Smash "Leaks" Character Count, a passion project where I would document every leak to
  • Compare them to actual reveals
    AND
  • See if any of them turn out to be true.
So, how have things turned out since then?

To start, a total of 212 "leaks" have been documented, of which 32 have either been lost or disproven. Within those 202 different characters have been mentioned as potential newcomers in Smash Bros. Ultimate.

The current top 10 characters are as follows:
  1. King K. Rool with 133 mentions (62.73% of leaks)
  2. Simon Belmont with 111 mentions (52.35% of leaks)
  3. Dixie Kong with 69 mentions (32.54% of leaks)
  4. Shadow with 68 mentions (32.07% of leaks)
  5. Dark Samus with 62 mentions (29.24% of leaks)
  6. Ashley with 57 mentions (26.88% of leaks)
  7. Geno with 56 mentions (26.41% of leaks)
  8. Elma and Isabelle with 36 mentions (16.98% of leaks)
  9. Banjo & Kazooie with 31 mentions (14.62% of leaks)
  10. Ray-Man with 29 mentions (13.67% of leaks)
I'd like to thank you guys for your support during this project. I'm honestly surprised at how big this has gotten, and I'm glad that I can bring discussion to this board in any way I can.
