For me, it'll be Tails Paper Mario the Ice Climbers for sure.

Well, we might only have the OG 8 (or 12) to start...

But . I've always been a Link main, and it'll take more than him using the wrong hand to get me to switch. But I can't wait to unlock my boy Squirtle too.

Well, since we have to unlock everyone outside of the original 12(8?) it'll be Pikachu Libre for me, at least until I unlock Pichu, Palutena, Mimikyu, Ashley, Wolf, Ridley, Ice Climers, Inkling, Daisy, or some other newcomer who hasn't been revealed yet.

After I unlock everyone I'll be playing Palutena and hopefully Mimikyu. If Mimikyu isn't in then Pichu....unless its still just bad Pikachu.

So, most likely, I'll just play Palutena. Bless Sakurai for fixing her hair.

EDIT: Actually, her hair could use a little more work.....still better than Smash 4's but still.

Yeah we still don't know if we're getting the 8 or the 12, we just know it's the Smash 64 roster.
If it's 8, I'll probably pick like Mario or Samus. If it's 12, I will go by my word and play only Falcon until I unlock everyone.

Sakurai finally released his second part of his famitsu column and gave a lot more information.

One thing that has been debated over time, but yes Sakurai confirmed that Bandai Namco is indeed working on the game once again. This is a good thing seeing how it’s the same team that can improve on what they know and allow Sakurai to not make a new team from scratch.

He also said that he has to cooperate with EVERY publisher. Which can also include second party companies for their approval and what their characters’ limitations are, and with so many publishers he barely got them all aboard, which suggests why Sakurai stated it was a risk. This also explains why Sakurai stated that he does not think another Smash game with all previous fighters will happen again. Getting all the publishers to agree and allow their characters to be in Smash is such a big gamble.

Finally one interesting thing I noticed is that he said how Smash can lead a big impact to other games outside of it, meaning that Sakurai is well aware on how franchises getting exposure from Smash can benefit from it in the long run. I’m hoping this means that he might be interesting in adding content and even characters from lesser known IP’s like Golden Sun and Advance Wars. (One can dream).

EDIT: A couple of things I haven’t mentioned yet.

Sakurai also said that he gets requests and knows that people want him to work on other projects. However, Nintendo makes the call when Smash should get made, and priotizes it. This can also mean that Nintendo asked Sakurai to prepare for the new Smash game in late 2015 for the “NX”, which explains his first proposal and all that.

FINALLY, Sakurai explains that Smash is huge collaborative undertaking and is Nintendo “Primere” title. He also said that it’s natural for people to expect newcomers along with veterans, but implies that it takes a lot of man power to make it happen. This probably implies with what he said about Ultimate being the perfect (and only) time bring everyone back.

Something about unlockables: will they go by order or just whoever? If it's whoever goes first, I feel like the obvious first choices for unlockable characters by doing whatever will be . They seem pretty staple-y for menial smash tasks.

All I'm saying in regards to returning stages and the unfortunate fact that they won't all be returning, is that Fountain of Dreams and Brinstar Depths from Melee need to come back.

Speaking of unlocking characters: The fact that the original 12 is all you start with when you boot up the game is cool. I'm with it. But at the same time, I can't help but be just a little bit upset that the second you boot up the game, you can't play with any of the newcomers. Before the official reveal, I was planning on making Inklings the first character I play, but evidently that can't happen.

Sun and Moon Red would be cool. Maybe we can get an updated Leaf too? That's probably just wishful thinking though considering TPC didn't care enough to do that. Who knows though, Roy's return in 4 leaves some precedent for it.

Armored Mewtwo would be great.

Since when is Donkey Kong a lesser known IP?

So I was thinking about that Snake with the Ramblin' Mushroom pic, and I've concluded either two things:
1. It's Guar Plain and the angle of the picture (and/or updated background) makes it look like unfamiliar terrain
2. It's an adventure mode stage, Melee style, themed like Guar Plain

The textures and lighting match up with known pictures we have of Guar Plain, but the terrain does feel very unfamiliar. Likely either an odd angle or adventure mode. The only other explanation for there being a Ramblin' Mushroom there is that it's an assist trophy, which is... a very unexpected choice.

ONE LAST THING,

Sakurai said that, “There is a lot of new and interesting games, but Smash truly is special”.

I suppose this could mean that with the many other games that come out, Smash is eventually prioritized, this could also mean that Sakurai takes new games into consideration for representation albeit characters, stages, and music, etc. when developing Smash.
