Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

What does Inkling have to do with Ridley? My Point is Ridley doesn't have a real base for his Moveset other than he's a Space Dragon and so there's no stopping other characters from having similar Movesets.

Skull Kid is a dark magic trickster, now you can make a generic Moveset, with some specific moves based off games he's appeared in. The same has happened with characters such as Shiek. Shiek is a ninja, boom Ninja Moveset.

I think I mayyyyyyy be misunderstanding your point, but I don't think a character needs a unique playstyle to be considered viable. Although if you're just asking what could be a unique playstyle for him, that's fair, and then maybe something based around his moves debuffing characters like hexes and pranks.
Ridley has the goddamned tail from Alien. In the trailer, he actually kills Mario and Mega Man, true story, and well, his move-set definitely revolves around that weapon of mass destruction. I assure you, most space dragons do not just go around impaling people with their tails. They can fly and blow fire, same as Ridley, but that tail is all him, baby.

So, with Ridley finally confirmed, will he pass the torch to Waluigi (who’ll then become a fan favorite, multiple times ”denied”, meme character for Smash... who also happens to be purple haha)? Or would that be someone else? I mean, in every comment section about Smash Ultimate I seem to notice, without exception, at least a few Waluigi comments either demanding him in or just going ”Wah”. Maybe it’s just because he was shown as an Assist Trophy from the get-go and people vent off, but I’m also kinda loving the support he has. Fan outcry did work out for Ridley, so...
You never know, if King K. Rool misses out again, they might pass the torch to him because he is much more popular. In terms of meme power, I feel like Waluigi already had Ridley beat. But that is just, like, my opinion.

K Rool, Waluigi, Isaac are the three closest in similarity
Isaac for the overseas popularity powerhouse
K Rool for being a Really popular reptile villain of a famous series with 2 reps
Waluigi for the memes

Sad that Waluigi probably cannot be a DLC. Well, he could but the Assist Trophy makes it seem unlikely.

However, this situation can mean that previous Smash AT's that are not in Ultimate as a trophy or character has a chance to debut as a DLC.

@ the discussion going on about characters and their implementation:

You know, a little imagination never killed anybody. It sounds like ya'll are trying to codify/stratify/flat-out type out **** based on criteria that doesn't really exist, and it's a very limiting perspective.

Mario is canoncially dead. He's not even in this Smash Bros.

I don't mean to ask multiple times but I'm worried it got burried, has anyone seen Sheiks Final Smash? I'm hoping it takes BOTW or Sheikah inspiration. Especially since Link basically has the light arrows now.

Ridley's 'gimmick' is his violent fighting style. Sakurai described him as a very cruel character. Makes sense with that ****ing impalement, screen dragging, etc.
I really liked they emphasized his brutality rather than his size.
Playing against this character is going to cause some serious psychological trauma: His Down B is pretty much a free stock if you land the sweet spot, and the start up isn't too atrocious. His side B and neutral B are pretty solid stage control options and his aerials are decent.

Ridley also has two specials that can backfire.

His charged fireballs and sour-spotted impale tail.

Absolutely incredible to me that the starting roster of a roster of over 65 characters is starting with the Original 12. It's really cool to see the twelve characters that started it all officially get acknowledged.

So who thinks Simon is still coming? I think that since it seems like he was wrong about the Konami game(s) (I think he said 2 games, right) he's wrong about Simon, too.

I know this is all very conspiracy-esque and the precedent clearly indicates that assist trophies mean deconfirmation; however, I still believe he has a moderately high chance of appearing. I do not care if it sounds crazy. I am correct virtually all the time, after you get so much correct while the community struggles to keep up, you just start to trust your own logic, perhaps a bit too much. All I am saying is that the last two times he was confirmed as an assist trophy, Sakurai went out of his way to state that he would not be joining. Waluigi is happening, go ahead and mark this post so that I can rub it in everyone's face when I am right... Again. I would say it never gets old, but honestly, being so ahead of the curve constantly does get old. I guess no one else really knows what the feels like though. :denzel:

Do we know if Pokemon Stadium (the original, not 2) is returning in Ultimate? Source gaming has it in their list of returning stages, but I haven't actually seen any screenshots to back this claim up.

Do you guys think there is still a chance for Rex or Spring Man to be playable in the base roster?
I'm doubting it, the most recent thing we've seen is an odyssey stage and mario has cappy's eyes glued on his hat and a taunt but no moves. And then inkling has nothing from splatoon 2. I'm seriously doubting that they'll get in at this point

Ridley has 8 skins already, not including his Meta skin:

Could it be the meta form just has one skin? Or does it have multiple pallet swaps of the meta form...

I imagine Dixie Kong will definitely will be added as a Diddy echo fighter in the future and hopefully Funky Kong could make it as DK's echo fighter

No Reignited Trilogy on the switch really hurts my boy Spyro's chances... dang.
It will come eventually, just be patient.

If Crash is on the Switch, there's no reason for Spyro to not be on it as well

I'm sorry if this has already been brought up here already, sorry if it has, but...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gF-yNJJOUWU
Pretty much 84 stages confirmed already. ( 83+The more than likely yet unconfirmed Final Destination )
So basically this game is gonna have every character and every stage that's been in the series so far, there's only 20-something stages left after all. I'm getting the feeling this is the last smash game tbh, I mean how do you possibly top a game like that, that's also literally called "ultimate" lmao

I’m in the same boat with Mute City Melee. Source says it’s confirmed, but I can’t find where the evidence of it being in-game is. Considering it’s one of my favorite Smash stages period I’d really like to know. As for Pokémon Stadium 1, we know it’s in thanks to this screenshot from Dedede’s page. It’s very similar obvs, but the subtle details are there that show this stage is Stadium 1 and not 2.

2 options:
The next smash is 3D
The next smash ports this game and adds even more stages/characters

I wonder who the announcer for Smash Ultimate will be? Will we see Xander again, or have somebody new? I'm looking forward to it.
I like how he has an orange skin.

The jokes about Purple Charizard being Ridley have gone full circle :p
Smash 4: "I want to play Ridley!" "Just play Purple Charizard!"
Smash Ultimate: "I Want to play Charizard without Ivysaur and Squirtle!" "J U S T P L A Y O R A N G E R I D L E Y."

Realistically speaking though, I'm glad that Zard is back with his buddies.
Based on the look of PT, it looks like they finally managed to pull off a good transformation character after about 17 years of trying (and failing).

Like other people have said, you just have to reboot it. Everything will just be different and the series will be handled by a different person I assume.

There's no penalty for playing as just Charizard though, you just don't have Rock Smash.

Preliminary call- Pokemon trainer is going to be really strong on release
The fact that transformations are nearly instant and there's no pokemon strength decay is going to do wonders for this character. I think 3 movesets makes this character really strong as long as the data is even mediocre on all 3 individually, because charizard's has amazing endurance, Ivysaur appears to have a great grab game, and squirtle appears to have very good aerials.

Also Xander is back.

They've already said that the Smash series will probably continue after this, but the reason that they're doing this is because this might be the only chance they ever get to go all out with the roster like this. This may never happen again, so they're doing it now.

Everyone out here saying there's not gunna be any Pokemon newcomers and you put in 2. Bless you, you're doing the Lord's work.

Even though I reallllly don't expect Gardevoir to join the playable roster, we haven't seen them in a Pokeball right? That bodes well for you.
Considering that Pichu has returned, maybe there's hope for a playable 3rd generation Pokemon. The odds aren't great for Gardevoir, due to it being past its prime, but as long as it hasn't popped out of a Poke Ball yet, there is hope.

I can't exactly say the same thing for the 5th generation though, since Zoroark is a Poke Ball Pokemon again. In terms of the 7th generation, I'm still hoping for a playable Ultra Beast, and Buzzwole seems to be the best possible option right now.

One change I would really like to see from the demo is removing the forced switch on Pokemon Trainer if you lose a stock. They say you can just play as one due to stamina not being an issue, but every time you die you need to waste your invincibility switching Pokemon back to the one you want. It needs to only switch when you press down+b and that's it.

Also Snake vs Cloud in the background of the Treehouse on the monitor.

That match up.

Two major Playstation 1 icons fighting.

Something Sony failed to do in Allstars Royale.

Crazy to see in Smash.

Someone else mentioned yesterday that you can switch on the platform without losing it, so you don't actually spend invincibility in doing so.

With regard to how many new characters, I'm actually going to be as pessmistic as to say four at best. If Sakurai gave us a warning about not being optimistic about the new characters, there must be something to it. You don't usually spread negative news about your own project before it's even released.

Another part of me however thinks that this just might be a strategy. That the potentially massive success of DLC characters convinced them to revolve their new title around that very idea? I mean that concept would be genius.

The game cannot have many newcomers because the primary focus is having every character return. Therefore they get to add an excessive amount of newcomers through DLC. Nobody could argue against this because they could always hide behind the argument that the newcomers couldn't have been added in the original development and had to be DLC. That way they could add the exponentially increasing amount of newcomers they add with each generation, make the absolute majority of them DLC and nobody would be in a position to criticize this practice.

I have a theory, Since this is the Ultimate Smash Bros game, we will most likely see every previous announcer from the series make a comeback and there will be an option where you can change the announcer.

Oh wow! That's actually incredible. I was highly disappointed seeing the forced switch return, I'm glad they implemented something to work around that.
