Super Smash Bros 64 was the protoype, so it's excused.
Now, Melee's newcomers where the leftovers from Nintendo 64-era.
Brawl's newcomers where the leftovers from GameCube and GameBoy-era.
Smash 4 Wii U & 3DS's newcomers where from Wii and DS's-era.

Makes a lot of sense that Smash ??? for Switch's newcomers could be well drawn from Wii U and 3DS's- era.

Just a thought.

I know the context may have been lost, but originally, it started from a hypothetical question about "what if Smash Bros. included a Pokemon to represent each type?"

I owned a WiiU and after the Switch came out I basically left it to rot until I needed to play the Prime Trilogy again. I think Smash should have a few WiiU things in it, mostly stuff from things that have been ported forward, but it should be looking forward.

We know from Splatoon 1 Inklings that that probably isn’t the case. But goddamn what I wouldn’t give to leave all that WiiU mediocrity behind (not you, Tropical Freeze, you’re beautiful) and never have to see any Other M or NSMB or any of that other stuff again.

Mario Odyssey, BoTW, Tropical Freeze, Prime 4/Samus Returns, these are the things they should be looking at.

Oh my god, you just reminded me of the jokes about Gary Oak being a fighter that me and my brothers go about all the time! His moveset basically just consists of insults and his final smash just has him call opponents losers and makes them feel terrible about themselves. It's a tradition for us to banter on about him.

All I ever heard about that game was that it was incredibly mediocre. I never played it myself as I’m not the sort to play JRPGs but I’ve not heard much good about it. I’m obviously liable to be wrong.

Awwww, seriously!? I absolutely ADORED that game. Loved every minute of it. Would definitely re-buy and play again if released on the Switch, and I DID NOT take that stance on Hyrule Warriors or Tropical Freeze.

They might theoretically not show gameplay of them all if any of them are notably reworked, though, like how Yoshi was reworked in Smash 4 and was thus revealed late.

Xenoblade X is worth it just for the giant flying robots.
There's tons of great things in it. Combat is great, characters are fun (not great or anything, just fun), music is top tier, the world is great, creative and beautiful. The plot is lacking, but the game empathizes more on worldbuilding, some of the sidequests are fantastic. The game is massive. It boasts 19 playable characters and 12 weapons (split by melee and guns). For Cross, you choose one melee and one gun, giving you tons of possible combinations. Each other character has a set melee and gun, fixing their "class." The Skells give combat variety, and there's seven types of them. The world is massive and full of secrets, specially ridiculously OP bosses. As you progress through the game new alien species move into the city, and some of them are fantastic. The game can get super dark in certain sidequests, while also having lighthearted and fun moments. There's tons more I loved about this game, but this got longer than I intended.
X is one of the best games I've ever played and I highly recommend it, but I might be a bit biased because it's Xenoblade.

TBH, If Lycanroc does get in Smash, I do wonder what kind of mechanic he will make up for the Pokemon. Greninja didn't have much of a mechanic back in Smash 4, and I would love to see him do something experimental for Lycanroc.

I mean, it's nothing too exclusive to Lycanroc, but for being the first Rock-type in Smash I think it'd be cool for Stealth Rocks as a Down-Special trap to be a thing. How it'd be implemented and properly balanced is beyond me, but maybe something where whenever the opponent respawns from a new stock, the rocks automatically deal a set amount of damage. It's a move that takes a really long amount of time to set up (length of the Flag item or so), but for each set up it adds another rock to the setup, with a possible max of 3 or 5 (depending on how much damage they would do), and icons by Lycanroc portrait showing how many rocks are active. One would be lost from the total for each activation of the move (as in the rocks attacking your opponent) or from each lost stock by Lycanroc or both.

Honestly it's probably not the most practical idea in the world and/or it's already been conceived, but that was just off the top of my head. Other than that I can't think of too much. Maybe just the fact that he'd be a quadruped would make Lycanroc stand out enough in Sakurais eyes.

This whole "the wii u has no games to pull characters from" is kinda dumb, as if Tropical freeze, paper mario, captain toad, xenoblade x, star fox zero and (potentially) hyrule warriors don't exist.

And that's ignoring the 3ds for some reason as if Pokemon sun and moon, rhythm heaven, multiple kirby games, animal crossing and more didn't happen

and tbh outside of Rex and Springman there's basically nothing to pull from the switch anyway
