Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

It's almost funny how hard this is to predict. In the latest episode, Mimikyu got center spotlight and had a battle with Pikachu, and Jessie got Mimikium Z at the end. This means Mimikyu is more likely, right? Literally the very next episode, Lycanroc gets the focus as it takes on a 1-on-3 battle in a Grand Trial. So...Lycanroc is more likely?

At this point, it could be anyone.
The irony about this matter is that if the Smash Switch roster truly was decided in 2016, then it will not matter how important of a role the 7th generation Pokemon have in the anime series.

Related, is there concept art of the Champions? I wonder if Sakurai had to base a pick of those which he would choose. Mipha and Revalli look unique to me. Revalli might have been an issue if he was considering Decideueye though...also is it possible he wouldn't consider either of the bird archers as we already have a winged archer? Sorry that went on longer than I thought lol
Here you go.

So Nintendo asked a bankrupt and defunct company for permission to use World Class Track Meet for that E3 2015 video?
They likely didn't need to. They weren't selling the video.

Meanwhile if a character from Track Meet was in Smash, they WOULD need permission. It just isn't happening.

Oh wow...I've been predicting Mipha but if he based it off this I wouldn't blame him for not picking her she looks boring as ****. She's not even showcased with her weapon! Was she designed to be a pacofist healer at first...

Really neat though, thanks!

No, but how the Pokemon get treated in the anime could help key us on who the next rep could be. Sakurai did say that promotion and who would be relevant in the anime help him with his decisions, and I think the Pokemon we've gotten so far reflect that. If the writers are pushing certain Pokemon in the anime, or if we see a boatload of promotional material and merch for the same Pokemon, then I think those guys are worth keeping an eye on.

She might have looked a lot more interesting if she had her trident, but yeah, it doesn't exactly scream Smash material. Her design itself still looks unique though. Definitely a huge improvement over previous Zora designs.

Ironically, the two least popular Champions (Daruk and Revali) would probably look the most unique to Sakurai if he went solely off of this.

I still feel like the most likely Pokemon newcomer is Decidueye.

Or...maybe it's just the one I like the most.

It's been really up-played, like being used in Pokken Tournament, it fills that "Grass starter" position to go with Charizard and Greninja, it's a Ghost-type, which could bring some fun moves to the table, and it's an archer, which is a fighting style we haven't seen AS MUCH of in Smash Bros.

Decidueye has NOT been played up.

We've been over this a lot actually.

This played up you attribute to it?

It's actually Rowlet's.

And this is why I stubbornly supported Duck Hunt Dog and now I will have to stubbornly support Track Meet.
Even as someone who was never against Duck Hunt and was happy to see him make it in, there are MANY differences here.

1) Track Meet is an incredibly obscure retro title while Duck Hunt was super well known.
2) Track Meet is owned by a third party company, not Nintendo.

You're asking for an obscure retro third party whose only claim to fame is a bundle that seemingly only existed in America. That's not the same thing as Duck Hunt at all.

Your guess is as good as mine
I'm not entirely opposed to Mimikyu, I just don't find it extremely likely and I think most of the reasons for it are ultimately people trying to find reasons that set it apart from the crowd other than popularity. Fundamentally, Mimikyu is still a Team Rocket Pokemon, its kinda a bit player that occasionally gets an episode in the limelight. Generally, you can tell when a Pokemon was intented to be "pushed" as they get a lot of time in the spotlight even among the larger cast. Rowlet and Lycanroc are good examples of this, the former being the frequent comic relief of the series and the latter being the ace of Ash's team.

Also regarding the "Wario" argument, I don't know if its a good justification for Smash. We only really have two "dark versions" of a character in Smash, Wario and Dark Pit. Wario's role as a character (at least in Smash) isn't really based around his rivalry with Mario, it's more based around his appearance as a greedy, gross businessman in Warioware. Dark Pit more or less got in on luck, being an easy upgrade of a costume.

Mimikyu is popular, there's no debating that. However, its popularity grew out of an organic attachment people had to the character rather than a marketing push. Recent marketing has featured Mimikyu in response to this (stuff like being a DLC assist in Pokken, getting its own Z move, and Totem Mimikyu being available in both US/UM). However, this is lack of an initial push is what I believe would cause Sakurai to pass him up in the initial roster.

I'd say Mimikyu is probably the fourth most likely Pokemon to be added from gen 7, after Rowlet, Lycanroc, and Decidueye.
Others have already mentioned this, but Mimikyu being Jessie's Pokemon is really the only way it would have worked. It's currently being played as Pikachu's rival, so it would need to be on the team that rivals Ash's throughout the entire season. Still don't know why this is bad; it maintains a constant presence throughout the season this way.

The Wario argument is pretty much just for popularity longevity, something that Sakurai apparently takes into account. When the next Gen rolls around Mimikyu is the most likely of all Alolan Pokemon to remain relevant due to being the shadow of Pikachu's light. This doesn't mean much if the roster was decided before it's popularity could be gauged, but it has more impact later on after Mimikyu's debut.

To be honest, do we know for certain that Mimikyu received significantly less push to begin with? Just because it wasn't revealed in a video doesn't mean it wasn't slated to be popular. Corocoro seems like an equally important part in TPC's way of trickling new info to the masses, and exclusive Pokemon news means that the magazine's sales rise. Mimikyu still got a part in a reveal video soon after it was revealed in Corocoro anyway. Lycanroc didn't get it's own spotlight either, as the reveal video it stars in shows off other version exclusives too like Passimian and Oranguru along with gameplay and new Z moves.

Wondering if Isabelle should have a currency system based on bells that enhance her Public Works Project specials (as fans have suggested setting up traps based on her public works projects would be fitting).

Each special has three stages.
Stage 1 is free, 2 is better and cost 10 bells, and the third is the best and cost 20 bells.
Isabelle will automatically use the best and most expensive version of her special.
It's a unique idea, but I feel if Bells are involved then the gimmick should go to Nook. Isabelle's PWPs could just take a little time to build as opposed to having levels requiring keeping track of Bells.

Has anyone considered Magearna as a possible Generation VII rep? I feel it's unique body could offer a cool playstyle and moveset.
I adore Magearna, but the world just hasn't been kind to it as it got alright reception to being pretty much forgotten. It's a shame cause it's got some good potential. Crafty Shield seems pretty good for a projectile nullifier, with Magearna's beam based concept working for Aurora Beam and Flash Cannon, then there's Fleur Cannon that could be strong but lower Magearna's attack for a bit after.

I honestly would want to see New Pork City map back again in Smash switch
I feel like it got added in the wrong game, even in 4 player matches the stage is a bit too large for it's own good, but with 8 players? It actually seems like it'd be the right size.

At this point due to smash echo Chambers, I will be shocked if Rowlett gets revealed. Which I perfer because it will be a nice, fun and surprising reveal trailer.

Namco was the one who decided Pokken's roster, so the Pokemon who got added weren't really being pushed per say. If anything, the Smash community constantly requesting Sceptile and Decidueye to be in Smash might have been what inspired Namco to add those specific Pokemon.

In terms of promotion, Game Freak itself hasn't done all that much to push Decidueye. So far, it's getting the minimal amount of attention as a typical starter Pokemon. It's not getting special attention like the Froakie line, it's not getting a notable amount of merch or appearances in promotional material, and it has virtually nothing in the anime to pull from.

Honestly, we're the ones who are making Decidueye so likely. There's not much to hint towards it even being a frontrunner, yet we've all swarmed around it like we already got the confirmation it's in Smash.

I'm more curious about Eevee now. It's always been a popular Pokemon, but if there really IS a special Pokemon game where Eevee is your starter...well, is it going to have special attributes? Will it be like Pokemon Yellow's Pikachu where it can't evolve but does other unique things? Or will it have...some other interesting special ability related to it's evolution?

Could it be that we see Eevee as a future Smash character?

I don't know much about the new pokemon games, so sorry if this question sounds stupid, but there wasn't some kind of yellow electric cat called "zeraora" that was getting popular or something? wouldn't that pokemon have also a big chance to be in smash?

Yeah when you look at the possible contenders, Dusk Form Lycanroc and Mimikyu have had the most common anime appearances. Buzzwole and Incineroar have had at least one episode where they're the main focus, and the former even has an ability that would have a good deal of potential as a unique fighter mechanic.

As for Decidueye, its only real saving grace is its playable appearance in Pokken Tournament DX; its anime debut was very minor, and it's the least popular fully evolved 7th generation starter. While not impossible, I feel that Decidueye's playable chances are being highly overestimated, as Game Freak doesn't seem to be pushing Decidueye in the same way that it pushed Greninja.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that. That'd be a pretty fun character! I've always liked the idea of a Smash character that was reliant on claw combos (my personal pick was Meowth for many years.)

It wouldn't be my favorite potential Pokemon newcomer simply because it's another Electric type, but oh well! It's still a pretty cool possibility.

Yeah, that's the last mythical pokemon they revealed this generation, but it's such a recent thing that I doubt it has any real chance of getting in outside of DLC.

It's an event exclusive. I can see it making in as DLC tbh because as of yet Zerora isn't officially released iirc. Is it even officially revealed? I genuinely forgot

I know literally nothing about the Sun/Moon anime, so I wasn't sure which Pokemon were getting promoted through that.

Wii Fit already had a impact on Nintendo history as great as or greater than :4duckhunt::4rob::4gaw: did by the time she was chosen and while Wii Fit was still a active franchise back during 2012, she's very much relegated to being a historical character like those three these days.
Aside from Wii Fit being dead or not... isn't she from the 21th century? I wouldn't call her historical.

Calling a new Eevee evolution (will be revealed in the new Pokemon movie that features Eevee as one of the main Pokemon) that may also be a focus of this new Eevee game (maybe this Eevee can only evolve into that form).

Could be a fighting type and become bi-pedal and thus would be a good contender for smash. DLC that is.

If we look at Alola promotion, it's Rowlet, Mimikyu, and Lycanroc as the big 3.

For Rowlet, Sakurai can keep it like that or add in Decidueye as a reference to its unevolved state. I really cannot see anything other than those three (4?) making it into the base roster.

Not to overwhelm you with more options, but there's also Incineroar. It was featured in last year's movie, and it seems like Ash's Torracat might evolve into an Incineroar and develop a rivalry with Masked Royal's Incineroar during the Pokemon League.

I'm getting a headache from balancing out all the possible Pokemon candidates. Leakers, do your job and tell us who the next Pokemon rep will be!

I’d personally still love it if something from the Popplio line were to be the rep, given that nobody here is considering them.

I think incineroar works the best from a gameplay standpoint and ease to implement. We dont have wrestler archetype yet.
The last time we got an "archer" the bow only ended up being used for one move. Not to mention he's not that popular.
I dont see the 7th gen water starter's body working in smash.
Would be difficult and awkward to incorporate mimikyu's special traits.
And lyncanrocs gimmick is his forms, something that would also be awkward to implement for the same reasons eevee would be.

I like Incineroar a lot. But I also know I would be really bugged if we got a second Fire starter before a single Grass starter.

I might just be guessing here, but the lack of Popplio support probably has to do with the way it travels. Popplio and its evolutions don't have legs, but that's a rather feeble reason, as R.O.B. doesn't have legs either, and Bowser Jr. utilizes his Koopa Clown Car, which is also legless.

And the biggest sense of irony is that Primarina, last I've checked, is one of the top 5 most popular 7th generation Pokemon.
