Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Wouldn't there be a pre-production period before the roster is finalized and actual development starts? Like for things like deciding the roster, finding out the Switch specs, getting info regarding Breath of the Wild content, securing rights for 3rd parties and non-EPD characters, and that stuff about the engine we heard about from that former Namco employee which was allegedly finished in August? We know from the Gematsu leak that Chrom and Chorus Kids were initially planned but ended up replaced and cut so I doubt the roster for Smash Switch was finalized immediately in March.
Yup. If anything, since August is when Bandai Namco started full-scale production on Smash Switch, the roster was probably finalized sometime shortly before that.

Spike confirmed more important than Diddy Kong.
Spike is the one character I can't get my head around when it comes to Mario Tennis Aces. Like, is he that popular as an enemy?
Am I the only one who thinks its weird that Pauline isn't in this? I figured she'd be a gaurantee after Odyssey's success.
They did say they'd add more characters down the line, so while her absence in the main roster is baffling I expect her to make her playable debut eventually.
I don't know why fans, or Nintendo for that matter, are promoting Pauline so much considering she's an NPC who does just about as much as any other NPC in Super Mario Odyssey.

If anything I think Cappy would be included to represent that game.
But she's not just an NPC like the rest though, she has history that goes all the way back to the DK Arcade where it all started and appeared throughout the Mario vs DK series, that's why people want to see her.

As far as Smash is concerned, how would you feel about Pauline as a newcomer utilizing elements of Mario Odyssey in her moveset, like hat throwing, similar to how Rosalina embodies Mario Galaxy?

This is my ideal, Pauline with a music and dance based Moveset with either Cappy or Tiara as her hat. But it feels like a stretch :/

Not really that fond of the concept. Plenty more Mario and Donkey Kong characters I'd rather see before her.

I just dunno if it fits her to have a "cappy" move set, though I dont really want them to put too much cappy into mario (maybe just replace F.L.U.D.D.) so although i'd be down with it and it'd be a great way to rep mario odyssey as a whole, im just not sure they'd do it cause its not exactly her character to do cap stuff... though rosalina reps galaxy doing stuff she didnt do so who knows.

If they replace F.L.U.D.D. I’m gonna sue nintendo. I actually liked sunshine more than Odyssey, which is saying a lot because I REALLY liked Odyssey.

I can see that happening. I guess she could be cool but I want Captain Toad more. Maybe both could get in like how SSB4 got two Mario newcomers.

Eh, she's a rather minor character in Odyssey all things considered, so I don't think it makes much sense to have a game be embodied by a minor character from it. I think it would be better for her to represent the classic arcade DK games and/or the Mario vs DK series. I'd rather just have Mario throw his hat as a new special move; they could have it function like in Odyessey where you can leave it out and use it as a platform.

Yeah suppose another issue I have with pauline is that I want captain toad and waluigi before her. It'd also feel like a really low blow to daisy fans to add her if daisy isnt at least like an alph style peach alt or something this time.

If Smash added Captain Toad, Waluigi, and Daisy...that'd be, like, the COMPLETE Mario roster to me.

There's other Mario characters that'd work or could be particularly fun, but...that would be like every expected character in a Mario game.

I've always considered it weird that people think Link having Champion/Sheikah Slate moves or Mario having Cappy moves is not gunna happen because they were one time deals, but in Brawl we got Fludd and fricken Gale Boomerang.

Do people think how Sakurai goes about planning reworking veterans has changed?

Have Daisy do anything remotely important like the other 3 Mario ladies have done in Nintendo's history then they can ***** about her not getting anything.

Rosalina is pretty much as much the main character of Galaxy as Mario is. Galaxy is considered to be up there with Mario 64 for best Mario game.

Peach is the first lady of Nintendo and one of the most iconic female faces in gaming.

Pauline is the original first lady and a part of the most important game in Nintendo's history as a company.

Daisy....is just some chick in a yellow dress who plays sports and drives go-karts. Oh, and she was in some cell phone game and a spin-off game that no one really talks about anymore.

You seem to be forgetting she also appeared in Super Mario Land, a launch title for the Game Boy.

Just figured I'd point that out.

Which isn't as important as either of it's sequels. That was the spin-off game I was referring too.

Wario is introduced in the second, and it then becomes his series in the third.

Daisy's intro game is literally even the least important of a trilogy.

I may also be a little biased since Super Mario Land I find more fun to play than most Mario 2D platformers, though it was still a launch title for the Game Boy, Nintendo's first handheld since the Game & Watch titles, as well as the foundation for Nintendo's other future handhelds.

That in and of itself is pretty notable.

Off-topic, but I remember when Arcade Mario/Jumpman was supported on Smashboards with the rationale that the Arcade DK series should be represented through him. At any rate, if, hypothetically speaking, Pauline was to be a playable character in Smash Switch (given that development started in 2016), she'd probably take more inspiration from the arcade DK games and/ or the Mario vs DK series than Oddysey anyways.

Frankly, Daisy might as well have debuted in Mario Tennis alongside Waluigi, because her reintroduction in that game is the only reason she became relevant again; otherwise, no one would've remembered her, since her only appearance would've been on an early GB game, where her role is an analogue of Peach's.

I'd actually really like this. Her moveset could involve tranformations like a Bullet Bill or a Chain Chomp. Heck, maybe even give her the New Donk taxi or the T-Rex.

And instead of a mustache, all of her transformations have earrings. :)

Daisy conversation? Splendid! Those are always a charm!

Look, I'll leave it at this. Even though Daisy might be stuck with a loser label, she's still pretty iconic. She's definitely more well-known than Pauline and possibly still more well-known than Rosalina too. If Daisy somehow got in Smash, it's not like anyone would be any less confused with her presence than they would with Pauline's.

Okay; just ONE name:

Who should be the next Zelda newcomer in Smash Bros.?

My answer is...

Impa.
My bet is for any of the 4 champions. I assume you're talking Hyrule Warriors Impa, correct?
I dunno, I just don't see a Warriors rep as likely. They're from a spin off game of a series that has already proven itself to be extraordinarily picky with its representation. I just can't see any of them getting in over a character from a mainline game.

Obviously Impa appears in other Zelda games, but never with actual combat prowess. The one exception bring OoT Impa, who is pretty much just Shiek from what little we see of her.

Pauline works best representing DK arcade and the Roaring 20's. Big hats, jazz, skyscrapers. All part of the 20's.

Jazz and other 1920 dance moves could fill in her 'A' attacks.

Actually, not entirely out of the question. She was considered to be on the Melee roster, but was set aside due to her lack of relevance in Japan.
Wrong. That is incorrect.

And being considered for a brief moment and then immediately being dismissed, is not something to brag about.

“Well, I was thinking about it during the Melee days, Famicom Detective Club…Ayumi even has her own Trophy in that game. But in the end, there’s no way she’d work overseas, so…but I do like Famicom Detective Club.”

If the likes of Lucas, Marth, and Roy are anything special (being the protagonists of a bunch of Japan-only titles, and proving themselves very popular among the fans), then I'd say that she's got a fair shot, though not as much as Takamura since we actually managed to get his game, as well as a special spot in Nintendo Land.
No. Being Japan Only is and has always been a problem for newcomers. You can't say that because Japan Only characters have gotten in, that being Japan Only is not a problem. It is. Sakurai has even stated that he specifically avoids that. There are exceptions, but being Japan Only will keep you from getting in.

Well, see....

My general belief is that any Smash character should be an all-encompassing version of that character. Like...Mario uses Fireballs, Super Cape, AND FLUDD, right?

Impa could be like that, utilizing weapons and fighting styles from Hyrule Warriors, sure, but also perhaps some of the magic abilities she shows in Skyward Sword, or special moves and attacks based on the various ninja enemies of Breath of the Wild.

That's one of my defenses for Captain Toad; he doesn't HAVE to be relegated to the "jumpless" Captain Toad. He can have the abilities of BOTH Captain Toad and the regular, everyday platforming Toad.

I think the Mario newcomers will be between Captain Toad and Paper Mario.

Captain Toad because he's the last important main series Mario character, and has his own game.

Paper Mario because he has his own series of games, can represent the Mario RPGs and has the most potential for a unique moveset.

...oh wait we're talking about Zelda newcomers now.

If I may interject, Lucas was added in Brawl's roster while MOTHER 3 was under development, and Sakurai wouldn't have an idea about the game's future as a Japan-only title. I feel that's what ultimately put Lucas on the cutting block for Smash 4 (arguably same with Roy in Melee, though he did have data in the works), but was brought back as DLC due to fan demand.

Tbf, Daisy hasn't done anything because the devs haven't done anything with her. There is just as much potential for her to do stuff as any other character.

I'm not saying she should get her own game or spin-off or anything like that but they could easily do a "Return to Sarasaland" or whatever or she could just play an important role in one of the main games as a supporting character.

I'm ranting again so I'll just tl;dr it with the devs aren't using her. They know people like her which is why she's in Party and all the sports games but they just will not use her. I don't see her not doing much as a reason to hate her.

Side Note: I decided to get on after work and had 5 people quote me which freaked me the **** out. Like oml, I thought the entire thread was gonna roast me for something dumb I said.

My answer is...

Impa.

Hmm... No one's arguing yet, so I'd better answer the question while the thread is still tame.

I'm still riding with the Champions.

Regardless of how unique they'd be, it seems like every non-BotW character is at a serious disadvantage. I just can't see Sakurai going back to Skyward Sword and a spin-off of all things to add a Impa as the next character. Even with the remake and her popularity, Midna has unfortunate timing, as Sakurai just got rid of the TP designs. Tingle hasn't really done anything recently aside from HW (a game every other Zelda character is already relying on), so if he couldn't get in Smash 4, I don't know why he'd be better off now. Skull Kid is in a similar situation as Midna.

I get why you think Impa would be likely, but this feels like the Zelda version of the Decidueye argument. The fanbase and moveset is there to support her, but aside from a spin-off fighting game, she doesn't have the recent promotion to make her seem more likely.
