Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

nsmb wii and ds were basically my intro to nintendo. plus it gave us the best bowser battle theme which is why i will 1v1 anyone that slanders nsmb.

This is definitely one of his best theme songs ever given to him...but I gotta say Bowser’s Castle from MK8 and Bowser World from 3D World are his best just because I always picture him as a Pimp

Yeah, but it's not a good weird. Waluigi is good wierd. He's quirky. Tingle is honestly kind of creepy if you think about it.
His face and suit doesn’t help (kinda reminds me of some sort of pedo), while Waluigi is the most interesting man on the planet

Do you think that Sakurai would allow second representative from the same third-party franchise? Perhaps in the Smash Bros for Switch they add 7th generation Pokemons and...How many pokemons had added in each Smash Bros games?
Maybe for Sonic and Megaman, but that’s really it, as for Pokémon...2 per game

Melee= :mewtwomelee::pichumelee:
Brawl= :lucario::pt:
Sm4sh= :4greninja::4charizard:(as a solo act atleast)

Wii Fit already had a impact on Nintendo history as great as or greater than :4duckhunt::4rob::4gaw: did by the time she was chosen and while Wii Fit was still a active franchise back during 2012, she's very much relegated to being a historical character like those three these days.
Wii Fit, while significant, isn't historical so much as it was simply successful.

Like, I don't think anyone would argue that Miis are historical characters, and they were even more crucial to the success of the Wii than Wii Fit was.

The difference, I argue, is that the three historical characters all helped to shape Nintendo or gaming as a whole.

The Game and Watch games were Nintendo's first big financial success, and they embody Nintendo's philosophy of doing new things with seasoned technologies.

R.O.B. literally saved the North American gaming industry by getting the NES on store shelves.

The Light Gun was Nintendo's first gaming peripheral (mechanical ones were made as early as 1970 by the company,) with the success of the Laser Clay Shooting system alone saving Nintendo from going bankrupt. Further, the NES Zapper games are some of the most successful NES games Nintendo ever had, and Duck Hunt for the NES is iconic to the entire industry.

Wii Fit Trainer may be big, but she didn't shape Nintendo as a whole.

The only one I can see getting that treatement is Sonic, just because Sonic's cores characters are extremely famous even by themselves.

I HAVE A QUESTION!!

Does third party have a second representative in Smash Bros?

Does Fire Emblem is considered a third party?
Cap com got Ryu and Mega-Man. I think Bayonetta is owned by Sega, so Sega got Sonic and Bayonetta.

If Fire Emblem is considered a third-party because it is developed by a subsidiary of Nintendo and not Nintendo themselves, then Pokemon, DK (DKC and modern), Kirby, Metroid, Warioware, Yoshi, etc. are also third-party.

I just want to know how many pokemons have appeared in Pokeballs, not as fighters.
That's my question.

Do you think that BotW Link would have a new Final Smash?
If anyone played BotW, explain me...

It's because some few characters have their Final Smashes changed like Kirby, Pit, Luigi and Zero Suit Samus.
Do you think that with the new games released in Switch (or other consoles), Final Smashes will change?

There’ll have to be new final smashes for some of the vets

The series stagnated, you can't deny that. I loved the Wii and DS game. And then it just stuck in the same exact place the next few entries in the series. And I don't want Paper Mario in because his new games are trash, not because I don't like Miyamoto. Miyamoto just happened to contribute in making me hate the series now.

I'm not being salty nor childish, booboo. I'm giving an opinion: Miyamoto's design philosophy has roughly stayed the same throughout the last 30 years. We've advanced in hardware capability. The man was great in starting franchises and getting us to where we are, but he's out of touch.
it's pretty childish to not want a a character to get in just because you don't like their new games. and i don't care what you think of miyamoto's design philosophy, i'm just calling you out for wanting paper mario to not get in because you think the new games are trash while glossing over all the cool abilities he has in those games also the over the top hatred of nsmb. the newer nsmb games aren't breaking new ground but they are still decent games

I think Nintendo owns the rights to World Class Track Meet. Nintendo bought the rights to Family Fun Fitness Stadium Events and the original Power Pad from Bandai or Human Entertainment... at least in North America. Nintendo rebranded them as World Class Track Meet and the NES Power Pad. Nintendo had Stadium Events recalled and then repackaged as World Class Track Meet. That's how Stadium Events became one of the rarest NES games.

So... Stadium Events and the Power Pad may belong to Bandai or Human Entertainment... but World Class Track Meet and the NES Power Pad definitely belong to Nintendo. That's why they were able to be featured in that E3 2015 video along with other Nintendo-owned hardware and games (Nintendo definitely doesn't own the rights to the Power Glove).
This is potentially really important, actually. Can you link me to a source? The only info I've ever found was that they got the rights to publish it, not that they bought the rights outright.

They wouldn't need to have the rights to use it in a fair use scenario, but I'm unsure if that applies for this video in particular.

If Nintendo does own the rights, then that changes the situation. Though I would still argue that the Power Pad wasn't as significant as any of the previous representatives, which would make it an odd choice.

I want to be clear that I'm not discounting the character entirely; I just want some more information.

I wonder when they'll update the smashbros.com website.

I also wonder if there's anything to be mined on it, at least closer to the date.

Street Fighter has Chun Li, however.

If you make cases for Tails and Knuckles.

She also works.

If I may interject, Lucas was added in Brawl's roster while MOTHER 3 was under development, and Sakurai wouldn't have an idea about the game's future as a Japan-only title. I feel that's what ultimately put Lucas on the cutting block for Smash 4 (arguably same with Roy in Melee, though he did have data in the works), but was brought back as DLC due to fan demand.
Yeah, I was baffled and outraged by Lucas's removal, but objectively it made sense. Earthbound is a small and obscure series, and Mother 3 was a Japan Only game from 8 years ago by the time Super Smash Bros for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U was released.

Have Daisy do anything remotely important like the other 3 Mario ladies have done in Nintendo's history then they can ***** about her not getting anything.

Rosalina is pretty much as much the main character of Galaxy as Mario is. Galaxy is considered to be up there with Mario 64 for best Mario game.

Peach is the first lady of Nintendo and one of the most iconic female faces in gaming.

Pauline is the original first lady and a part of the most important game in Nintendo's history as a company.

Daisy....is just some chick in a yellow dress who plays sports and drives go-karts. Oh, and she was in some cell phone game and a spin-off game that no one really talks about anymore.
Agreed and im not really pushing for her other than a sorta ocd thing with having toad/waluigi/daisy to feel like the "complete" mario series was in smash, but her alone is hard to justify and i dont try to. toad and waluigi however i do want, and if we can take toad out of peachs moveset maybe a daisy alt can be more justified and include her that way. Again im really not pushing for her beyond "completeness" but i will say she was in mario land and sorta luigis gal and she was in the mario bros movie, horrible yes but she was a known mario character as the "other" princess for a long time and pauline was all but forgotten. glad paulines back of course. i guess im just kind of rambling but if i had my say we'd get toad and waluigi, daisy as a peach alt, and if the roster is huge or as dlc id be fine with pauline if sakurai thinks giving her a living cappy hat makes sense, it could be an interesting moveset though i dont know if it fits her, i wouldnt be opposed to it if sakurai does it tho, more opposed to her getting in over other staple mario characters (toad/waluigi).

Snake wasn't popular my ***
Within the Smash Brothers community, he wasn't. Even before guest characters were a thing, some characters got brought up a lot. Snake was NEVER one of them. Most people also expected him to be cut for Smash 4 due to not really fitting in.

Poll popularity actually was a factor for Bowser as well as Ganondorf.

The same can be said for Marth.
Still doesn't change the fact that Marth, Bowser, and Mewtwo were planned since the first Smash game, so they were completely unaffected by the poll either way. Ganondorf was also not planned from the start of Melee's development, only being included as a last minute clone, and would of been "unlikely" otherwise.

I'm just saying you're not taking into consideration the whole picture here.

You're really exaggerating my opinion. Yes, I do not like the NSMB series (lol at "over the top", you're making me out to be some deranged and angry person) because they were literally all the same. And yes, I do not like the new Paper Mario games and the direction the series took. It made me not like the idea of having the character in... I really don't know what you're getting at. Am I supposed to be blindly optimistic about everything Nintendo throws at me? If I don't like something, I am entitled to that feeling, so long as I'm not bashing/demeaning you for having the counter opinion; you know, which I never did.

I didn't say "you want Paper Mario? Well that's dumb because of my very biased opinion about the franchise". It's an opinion, get over it.

Don't forget that Capcom characters have to compete with rhemselves, though. Chun-Li is possible, but she has to beat out Phoenix Wright and Ameterasu to get in, assuming Capcom even gets a third character.

Frankly, I'd prefer one of Capcom's other franchises get some love before Street fighter gets a second character.

I'm hiding from Ninten-jas in a broom closet, it I finally have a moment to leak my info.

First, what do we know about how characters are chosen?
1. Sakurai must see "potential".
2. They must be reasonably popular.
3. They usually are timely unless they're historical.

I'm here to tell you those "rules" are lies.

Within the spoiler tag is how Sakurai truly chooses characters. You may never see Smash the same again.

Capcom getting to have a 3rd franchise join Smash and Sonic getting to have a second playable rep seems like a beautiful idea

Amaterasu and Phoenix Wright are nothing compared to Chun Li's iconic nature.

Hell, Ammy isn't even iconic. I don't know why people treat her like she is.

Chun-Li is still a side character compared to Ammy and Phoenix.
Also considering the fact we've never got multiple reps from 1 3rd party franchise, I would put Ammy and Wright WAY above Chun-Li.

She's still worth mentioning since she's been a Nintendo mainstay. I fully recognize that she's not on the same level as Phoenix, though.

And Chun-Li's more iconic, definitely, but I feel that Capcom and Sakurai would both prefer to represent a new series rather than having Street Fighter twice. Like, Bayonetta's easily less iconic than Tails and Eggman, but she got in before them. (I know that the ballot makes it weird, but I think it's a fair comparison regardless.)

Capcom characters?

I'm a big Phoenix Wright fan, and I especially love the idea of him in SSB since Ace Attorney is SO tied to Nintendo. For the same reasons, though, I've started to really get into the "Monster Hunter" idea.

Here's something fresh to discuss, what about a PC rep? I was thinking of a League of Legends rep as it's the most played game in the world and has revolutionized MOBAs and Esports. LoL definitely offers a wide array of interesting and unique character designs, and I feel the general aesthetic of LoL characters could fit smash. The obstacles to jump through is that PC gaming isn't that big in Japan and that Riot Games is a Western Developer/3rd Party. Sakurai said that potential characters don't have to have been on Nintendo consoles, and I think LoL's significance can make up for it.

I also think a Blizzard character could work as a PC rep who has made an impact, but what do you guys think?

Hm....well....

I'd like to think of something that DOES still have more ties to Nintendo. So...

...I still think of Minecraft as mostly a PC thing, yeah? I'll go with Steve. That works, right?

Tracer? if anything Blizzard should add a character from their most popular franchise, Warcraft.
Who still plays or can name a character from World of Warcraft. I'd love to see an Overwatch character, cuz it actually has awesome characters.

I mean Blizzard is extremely iconic to the PC platform. Warcraft, Starcraft, Diablo, even Overwatch heavily influenced and innovated their genres and have an array of options for characters.

No thanks, I'd rather Smash remain a celebration of Nintendo history than the Ultimate Battle of Ultimate Destiny or Ready Player One.

Ditto on Steve. He's mainly a PC character, but he also has huge ties to Nintendo.

Though, if we're talking about really unrealistic characters, I wouldn't be against Chell from Portal.

I wouldn’t be down for a PC character. Only those whoa have at least made one appearance on a Nintendo platform will be good for me (so sadly that means I wouldn’t have a chance in seeing Clementine join Smash Bros...even if I was serious)
