Why would they hype a Developer's Direct with just breakdowns of what we've already seen 4 days in advance?

4 DAYS in advance.

It's understandable to guess that this might be huge.

Why are some people expecting a plethora of characters to be revealed? One newcomer is a guarantee, sure. But lets be honest, a 2nd newcomer is pretty unlikely. A new vet has a chance, but definitely not 2-3 like I've seen suggested. Don't get me wrong, I would LOVE to see a bunch of new characters, but our expectations should be realistic.

it all comes down to one question.. why are they having this Direct? This brings me to 2 points.

1. The common assumption has been that the game will come out Q4 (I didn't share this opinion, but it was the most stated belief, from what I had seen)... why would they devote a direct to it now, if it's not coming for ~8 months?
2. 1 character reveal has been shown at most of the recent directs... since I assume they're going to devote 15-45 mins ONLY to Smash, why would you not expect more than 1 char reveal?


I'm personally expecting A) at least 2 character reveals (at least 1 newcomer) and B) a release date that is sooner than most people expect.

I would also expect clarifications on some items, final smashes, and modes of the game.

I realize I'm setting myself up for a bit of disappointment here, but I really can't see why they'd have a whole dedicated direct and NOT show these things.

Here's my prediction for what will be going down on Tuesday:

-A Release date: I'm expecting a summer release date now, possibly July if lucky.

-Sakurai will reveal how the two systems will actually interact with each other.

-A reveal of the size of the roster

-four returning veterans. I'm thinking Ness, Captain Falcon, Ice climbers and Meta knight.

-A couple new stages will also be shown, some new ones and for sure final destination. Maybe we'll see Hyrule temple and corneria.

- Finally one new comer. If we are lucky the two newcomers.

I do see some veterans being shown, sure, but not sure on all of these... however, Ice Climbers and MetaKnight could make sense actually: Ice Climbers because of the fact that Sakurai wasn't sure if they were able to work on the 3DS (showing them in the Direct would obviously confirm that they DO work), and MetaKnight because of how Sakurai seems to be tweaking out the veterans and balancing them, MetaKnight being one of the most intriguing ones seeing how OP he was in Brawl. Especially if any detailed explanations are told in addition to just revealing characters.

Well I'm just thinking about the sheer amount of effort a half an hour+ presentation would be. With all the unique cinematic things we've seen thus far in the year+ (like we're probably still looking at sub 10-15 minutes of cinematic footage total), anything of that magnitude wouldn't be unfeasible, but they just flat out wouldn't really need to do it.
If they reveal a release date, all thousands (millions?) of people hanging on the edge of their seats will be extremely excited, so will everyone who hears about it post hand. It really doesn't take that much "work" for them to have impact is the point I'm trying to highlight.

We could get so many big reveals and it could still be super short. 30 seconds dedicated to a new character is more than enough to appease the masses. So who knows. Don't need to set myself up to be disappointed when it is really really really hard for them to mess up the hype train.

I was just about to ask, what has been the shortest Direct we've had before?

The pokemon Direct was about 15mins long, I think that was the shortest. Plus Pokemon is a big deal, so don't think because it is smash bros that we'll get a long one right off the bat. But even with 15mins there is a lot that sakurai can tell us about the game, so no matter how long the direct is, we will not be disappointed.

I think there might truly be something to the time planned. The last direct that featured a newcomer was timed for the west and that was Little Mac's reveal and Japan is out of tune with Mac they consider him a retro WTF choice.

Isn't nintendo doing some kind of villain month on the eshop? Optimistically I'm hoping to get a retooled Ganon, Metaknight, Wario and hopefully Mewtwo and Ridley. If Ganon is reworked enough, and Mewtwo counts as a newcomer (I'm sure he'd be reworked to some extent), then it would be pretty exciting to have essentially 3 newcomers. Maybe not so much as 3 genuinely new characters, but I'd be more than happy with that.

In another thread, I mentioned how, two separate times, I had a dream about Peach and Toon Link being revealed, like less than a week before each was revealed, respectively.

Before I knew about this Direct, last night I had a dream about the April Direct revealing Ridley and Takamaru. I don't even know much about Takamaru at all, but Ridley was shown at the beginning with Takky at the end.

I'm not predicting or expecting this, but it'd be pretty crazy how I've been able to dream-predict at least 3 things without any prior knowledge.

Toon Link and Peach happened before I joined here, before I even knew about reveals that make sense. At those times I just thought they were random.

It could be anyone but it depends on many factors. If by some miracle the game is to be released before E3 then any third party left along with most veterans. Otherwise, my money is on Palutena.

There was an earlier Pokémon direct (in January) that ran 11:07, but it ran the in the same month as a general full length direct.
