So in my groggy state this morning I mosey on over to Smashbros.com to see the PotD that I missed staying up for last night.

>>sees some stupid Pokemon ::sigh::
>>eyes glance a bit further down the page
>>sees big-ass Smash Bros Direct banner
>>in Mario Kart 8 hype season
>>think I'm hallucinating for a couple seconds

All bless based Sakurai, who today giveth unto his flock.

What kind of a Direct do you think this will be? Something similar to the Developers Direct where things are explained thoroughly, or more of a showcase thing where things are just shown to us, like a trailer, some gameplay and surely new stuff (newcomers etc)? Or what would you prefer to see? I'd definitely like to see some of the known stages in action (like Palutena's Temple, Tortimer's Island and Prism Tower), some of the new items too, and also more footage of the veterans we haven't seen in movement yet (Diddy, Dedede) + all the new stuff of course.

Haha, that's exactly what happened to me. Got up, checked my phone. Remembered that potd, saw a boring animal crossing assist trophy. Then I scroll down a bit, and bam! Sakurai's announcement! Hype hits me and I see all these news results from today talking about it. Even more hype. Then I go here and the hype is everywhere.

I wouldn't bet on it though, seeing as Mario Kart 8 will be out before May is over. I still think that the new Smash Bros. titles won't be out until some point in Fall.
I was betting on it weeks before this direct was even announced. I truly expect it to be released very soon, but we'll see.

Hypehypehype though. Hope I don't have work that day...

I'm excited for the Direct, but I'm also trying to keep my expectations in check. I'm sure we'll see at least 1 newcomer, and then perhaps veterans like Sheik and ZSS when we get more game footage. They might throw in one or two other veterans that don't have games coming soon, but I could see them holding back. I'm hoping we'll get a release date as well, or at least a release quarter. Other than that, I'm pumped to get more footage and possibly learn more about some of the other game modes.

Of course, I won't actually be around for when it airs since I have a presentation that's 10% of my grade followed by work until 9PM EST, so I'll be waiting a bit to find out the news.

The mysterious adventure mode and customization! Hope that will be explained...

That customization statement was from a while ago. I hope we finally get to know what it is.

Adventure mode... I hope it's not like the subspace emissary. Maybe we'll get some gameplay of adventure mode?

Yeah, you can expect a melee-like adventure mode.

Customization, that can be anything...(except skins)

I thought the customization was speaking of giving lines to the characters on the 3DS version.
Nah, Sakurai said there would be some sort of customization you could transfer from the 3DS version to the Wii U one.

My body woke up at 4am and I checked the picture of the day…I saw that cutie Isabella and I was like "Oh how nice :)" then I scroll down, and the hype doesn't allow me to sleep for like another hour!!!

I was just lying down thinking what could happen! Since its a whole direct dedicated to Smash, I am honestly HOPING for 2-3 newcomers and some long awaited veterans, preferably the rest of the 12 Veterans (Yoshi, Ness, Captain Falcon, Jigglypuff). Maybe two more stages for each version and a LOAD of items :').

I know, I'm overhyping myself, but it'd be great. And come on, we got to get some newcomers in this if its a direct solely dedicated to Smash Bros! I can't wait. I get out of school at 2:50 so I'm actually gonna check myself out at 2:40 to go home and watch this!!!

And gain something that makes your character(s) progress, I think.

If so, then that would be VERY interesting...

So I'll add to the speculation:

What we will definitely see
  • A deeper look at Rosalina and Little Mac, since we got a good look at the other three newcomers in the Developer Direct.
  • Some changes involving some veterans, probably veterans revealed post-E3 2013.
  • Final Smash showcase.
  • More graphics comparisons between Smash Wii U and Brawl.
  • A look at some stages in motion.
  • Full, unedited match.
  • Cross-compatability features.
  • A rough idea of what game modes will be in the game.
  • A new general trailer like the E3 trailer that might reveal a veteran or two, similar to how Fox had quite the build up for Brawl at E3 (possibly to open the Direct).
  • ONE newcomer to end the Direct.
What we might see
  • Release date
  • Adventure Mode
  • Online Modes
  • Menu Screens
  • Information about the soundtrack
  • Stage Builder

What we likely won't see but I really hope we do see
  • Professor Layton as the newcomer (though, it does help his chances that Azran Legacy and Layton VS Wright were both released very recently in the US and UK respectively, so he's fresh in the minds of Nintendo fans. This is the most perfect time to announce him)
  • Snake revealed (I just have no particular reason to believe he would be announced NOW)
  • Alternate Costumes for all characters confirmed, and a look at a few of them.
  • A demo - preferably not a typical one with limited uses, but maybe a limited time online beta with a handful of characters like what PS-All Stars got, that can still be played offline even after the servers go down.

This is such an interesting situation because we don't know the format of this presentation.

Will it be Sakurai or Iwata hosting?

Will this be a "developer" direct that focuses on game modes and mechanics, with lots of talking over lots of new footage?

Will this be used as an info dump and be full of character reveals? Will it be like the original reveal video, or will we get anything like it?

It sounds like Sakurai was caught off guard by this. I would recommend hoping for stuff, not not "expecting" or "knowing for sure" what we'll get guys!

It will likely be a developers direct 2...

I just want either Ridley, Isaac, Palutena, or Lucina. That's all I've ever asked for in new comers.

Imagine if the Smash Direct ends with Sakurai/Iwata saying "There is now a playable demo of Smash on the eShop!" I'd go crazy. Several other games have gotten Demos on the eShop, i don't see why Smash can't have one?

Nintendo Directs are planned a long time in advance in order to prepare what to present and get the in-game footage and trailers ready. Sakurai wasn't caught off-guard, this is likely something that has been planned for quite some months by now.

Sounds interesting, but that will spoil the hype and fun for the full version, IMO

I truly think that it's a wonderful weekend to be a Smash Bros. fan right now.

Too bad I can't watch it live. Well, at least my little 9-year old brother can. Every time something Smash-related is said to appear in a Direct, we've had it on. The December one was the best, I watched the entire thing at school while he was freaking out at home about how "unworthy" Rosalina is. Hilarious. Wish I could get out of practice early to watch it with him.

Why are some people expecting a plethora of characters to be revealed? One newcomer is a guarantee, sure. But lets be honest, a 2nd newcomer is pretty unlikely. A new vet has a chance, but definitely not 2-3 like I've seen suggested. Don't get me wrong, I would LOVE to see a bunch of new characters, but our expectations should be realistic.

That would be the 2nd time the eShop would crash sadly :'(

Possibly due to no characters being put in March. And because its a whole direct dedicated to the game. I'm expecting the Direct to be about 30-50 minutes all in itself, and while they do have a lot to cover, it would be nice to get more than 1 newcomer.

As for veterans, unless its Snake they won't do anything special with them. They'll just show that they're there really.

Depends how the Demo is done, it's not like it will have something new that hasn't been revealed yet. The Demo can basically be one 2 minute match with Mario and Megaman on Battlefield and i'd be sold. (But, without the annoying E3 narrator this time)

The sheer hype of Smash having a Demo on the eshop would cause all of Nintendo's servers to crash.

Miyamoto: Sakurai-San! What are we to do? The people are begging for Smash! I'm afraid they might start rioting soon!

Reggie: My body is ready, but not ready for this level of hype!

Sakurai: Calm down. *Swivels in his chair to watch the planet Earth from the Nintendo Headquarters Lunar Space Station.* Everything is going according to plan.~

How are people certain about the direct's duration?

While potentially disappointing, could easily be 10 minutes long and have just as much impact.

@Mini Mic icu.
I was just about to ask, what has been the shortest Direct we've had before?

Okay I'm confused, because it seems like Sakurai is saying "This was announced suddenly, but I'll make sure to have cool stuff" in his tweet, but you guys are saying that's not true? I'm not trying to start an argument, I'm confused. To me it looks like he's saying it was sudden, not planned months in advance. Or at least, HE hadn't been planning months in advance for this.

Look at tweet (translated to English) "And say Nintendo Direct, announced suddenly, airing it, but is often suddenly. This time, I tried to have a little room. The "Smash Bros." official Twitter ( @ SmashBrosJP also), people of launch! medium from today It is not me, but thank you also here."

What do you guys make of that? Am I misunderstanding?
