Wrong board?

I don't bother with trying to convince Reimu's drum circle that Shantae has a chance.

If they can't see the Spirit, Smash Tag, her back and fourth presence with Shovel Knight as the poster girl on the indie button on Nintendo's eShop, or even being on the cover of one of the final Nintendo Power magazines as acknowledgement. Not even humor the idea, while some shove their supposedly "big as Dragon Quest" agenda down everyone's throat. What else can I say?

Many of them pull the same "these deserve it more" or "are more iconic" lists, that every gatekeeper across the Smash fandom pulls on them as well.

Ignorance must be bliss.
Touhou characters aren't very likely to me. Most of their games are fan made.

I think the issue with Touhou is that they would need ZUN's approval. I'll let TV Tropes sum it up:

No Adaptations Allowed: ZUN has turned away multiple investors seeking to make an official Anime adaptation of the project or translate it into other languages, largely because he would lack control over such a project, and doesn't like retreading old ground in general. He is, however, very supportive of Fanime and Fan Translations as long as their unofficial nature is obvious. Due to Touhou's nature as a niche format within a niche medium, it gets a lot of its fame from Pop-Cultural Osmosis; something as mainstream as an anime would run a real risk of displacing the original in the public consciousness.
Since Smash tends to supercede the origins of some game characters, ZUN probably wouldn't want the original games to be overshadowed by Reimu becoming playable.

I would honestly think King K. Rool being involved in Shantae's trailer if she were among the final 3.

He fits her criteria given her nemesis Risky Boots being a pirate.
Can :ultkirby: and :ultwario: fit too? They've been on GBC hardware as well.

Maybe a fight breaking out between the three of them in 8-bit style, right until :ultkrool: shoots a cannonball that they narrowly dodge...and it hits the lighthouse, bothering Shantae. As soon as she gets out, she's in her jammies, goes back in to change, visuals switch to 3D and Shantae gets out again in her usual wear.

Welp, it's gonna be a tough time for Reimu and Co.

For me personally, I just simply think that Shantae makes way more marketing sense than Reimu. Shantae's entire library is on the Switch, and she's been with Nintendo since the early 2000's. And I see that Wayforward has been taking steps to make the Shantae series more known in Japan. Unless I'm missing something, I haven't noticed ZUN taking as many steps to make Reimu more known outside of Japan. I didn't even know who Reimu was until earlier this year when I heard people talking about her as if she's Shantae's biggest competition to get in as Smash's first playable Indie rep. I still really feel that Shantae is the most deserving of achieving that title because Wayforward has faithfully proven time and time again that the Shantae series has longevity on Nintendo consoles, and won't stop putting the Shantae games on those platforms anytime soon.

Touhou games weren't officially translated in general until around 2015(ish), when international availability is one of Sak's main concerns. It's less a case of Shantae being deserving, and more of being the only viable option left that I see (unless Inti Creates decides to throw their hat in the ring out of nowhere). Just about every other indie either only has one game, didn't have their game out yet at the time, had their series established too late to matter for Ultimate, already has an AT or Mii costume, or is potentially obstructed by various factors.

If K. Rool is in Shantae's trailer, I hope they have him wearing his Kaptain gear and not just the hat alone.

It's good to speculate to pass the time regarding the fact that the remaining slots are locked in. Keeps the hype in check.

Also, the next update patch and Mii Costume Wave 8 is coming tomorrow with the Sephiroth challenge ending. So, give that challenge another round before it is gone forever.

I wish. They should have added Kaptain K. Rool as a alt in base game. But I don't think DLC alts will ever be a thing.
To be fair, three years of development was darn short by game standards. I'm sure we'll see it next time, when there's actual time to add multiple costume alts.

Talking about ideas for Shantae's Reveal Trailer again...
You guys really love tempting fate, don't you?
I don't ever talk about trailer ideas much, because most of those fan ideas couldn't possibly live up to what Sak has in mind anyways.

Otherwise, nothing much to do other than focusing on hobbies, recycle the same topics over and over, or twiddle thumbs. At least I'm okay with the possibility of Shantae waiting until next time, since her series is active (if a tad reliant on a new Ninty console for each major installment).

I just don't know how I'd feel if Shantae doesn't even have a Mii costume or a spirit event for SSS at all by the end of this.

How many Miis will be added? Also, they aren't going to show another trailer, aren't they?

So, what do you guys think a Shantae trailer would play out like? I feel like a lot of it, if not all of it, would have to take place in her world with her art style like the Byleth and Min Min trailers. If they did it that way though it would probably be pretty obvious right away who the new Smash character was going to be while watching it. But maybe they could start it out around Shantae's home where you see mostly water, some small islands, and maybe a ship in the background before panning over to the bridge in front of her lighthouse. That way it would start out with a little mystery. When Shantae fans see her house is when it would become obvious to us what character is about to happen, but maybe not to other people until she appears on screen. That's how I'd imagine her trailer starting out anyway. Then maybe she opens her front door and receives a Smash invitation or something.
A few ideas I’m partial to -
  • The classic ‘pirate ship appears and causes havoc’ idea, but instead of just K Rool, Ridley is there too - I mean, a space pirate is still a pirate! They’re out causing mayhem on a stormy sea and harassing Toon Link who’s trying to dodge them in the King of Red Lions, until they start firing the cannons - one of which crashes through the lighthouse roof. A blue flies out from the wreckage as Shantae goes harpy to reach the ship, and in the gunsmoke and stormy weather you only get glimpses of her Monkey, Elephant, and Spider forms bringing the beatdown on Ridley and Rool. As the storm starts to clear, Toon Link boards the pirate ship sword drawn, only to find the duo defeated to his bewilderment as Shantae sits victoriously atop them. No pirate is gonna get the best of her!
  • A sillier idea - Repurpose Falcon’s “Show me ya moves!” voice line in a dramatically lit scene... only for the camera to pull back as he sits down behind a judges table with Isabelle and a third judge for a dance contest. Showing him their moves. Mario and Bowser bust out their DDR Mario Mix moves, Joker goes full Dancing All Night, Wario and Dedede break out in a surprisingly sensual tango, Ness and Lucas may as well be doing the New Kids On The Block dance, Bayo is killing it as expected... Smash cut to judge panel deliberating as the contestants nervously stand on stage, until the spotlight shifts and a new challenger enters in silhouette. Shantae’s music blasts and her sweet moves earn her the win - Falcon shouts “YES!” and chucks her the trophy adorned with a smash invite. SHANTAE Busts a Move!
  • A personal favorite - The same setup as the K Rool and Banjo reveals. DK and Diddy chilling in their house, Banjo and K Rool lounging optional. They hear music coming from outside and go to check as per the format, and see Shantae’s silhouette, only for it to be revealed as a prank by... I don’t know what’s funnier, someone like Palutena pulling a practical joke as she’s want to do, or someone completely impossible like Wario. Cue the confused reactions. Regardless, Shantae bumps in to be the real reveal, SHANTAE is Ret 2 Go! ...Only for the viewing crowd to still be confused since none of them have a connection to Shantae. A comedic beat later, she dances and transforms into her monkey form, finally getting the cheers from DK and Diddy (because monkey) and Banjo (because transforming), but getting a sour look from K Rool (because more monkeys).

Ooh, I really like these! I love the first setup because having a pirate ship battle for the first 30 seconds or so would keep which character is going to show up very mysterious until the cannon goes off and hits the lighthouse. Then those who recognize it as Shantae's house would promptly start freaking out. And seeing the glimpses of her animal forms would be a great way to build up the suspense and a good showcase of what this character is all about.

Yeah, the cannonball through the ceiling was meant to go from ‘this pirate attack could mean anything’ to ‘this is a direct Shantae reference her fans will pick up on and start going nuts’, like the FF7 intro playing with Cloud’s trailer before even the smash logo shows up.

All done. I just want to collect them FF7 spirits, Mii costume and experience Cloud’s new Final Smash.

Anyone around here know who PockethalfGenie is? He's my friend on Discord. I chat with him sometimes, especially when it comes to Shantae for Smash speculation. He says the following characters were the most campaigned for and the highest voted:

Banjo-Kazooie
King K. Rool
Ridley
Snake
Wolf
Shantae
Sans (he said he doesn't remember on this one)
Geno
Isaac

Banjo-Kazooie, King K. Rool, Ridley and Wolf all became playable. Snake came back. Sans and Geno became Mii Costumes (the latter was initially a Spirit). And finally, Isaac became an Assist Trophy. Shantae is all that's left.
What are all your thoughts on this?

Hi did I miss anything?

It depends which area of the world you look at polls. Shantae was up there when it came to north america, and shows why she got a spirit in smash at the very least, since she did get a pretty decent following when it comes to smash support (WF themselves were campaigning for her too, that helped)

But in other places in the world she's not high at all XD

Nintendo has been shown to listen to their North American fans before. (coughs on Banjo-Kazooie and Steve)

My thoughts are:

What’s his source, or is he just going by “general online presence and some fan polls”? Because while either of those CAN be a source, they aren’t the same as the Smash Ballot itself. Online stuff is actually pretty centralized, and even sites like smashboards or the major smash subreddits only number in the hundreds of thousands at the absolute most, meanwhile smash’s audience numbers in the millions. The hardcore online fans are a drop in the bucket. An important drop to look at, but far from the whole picture.

I could ask him, but I would have to wait God knows how long because he mostly just sits on Twitter posting lewd **** instead of talking to me, one of his friends, on Discord.

They do sometimes. But it's pretty disproportionate when you see how many are japan :p
Which is why it's hard to tell how much chance Shantae really has. But that they do have NA characters once in a while is why I haven't given up hope on her.

Edit:

The list of characters your friend gave you is pretty close to the poll data from the ssb4 voting days that was mostly from North America but also a bit of other ones. Just for info here's the biggest gathering of those votes (45k of them):

Here's the top ones (in order):
King K. Rool
Isaac
Banjo Kazooie
Wolf
Snake
Inkling
Bandanna Dee
Shovel Knight
Paper Mario
Bayonetta
Shantae
Ice Climbers
Geno
Krystal
Ridley
Waluigi

While polls in japan ended up mostly like this:

I’m not going to lie but I would also love to have Paper Mario. He’s not on top over Shantae because Shantae is really important to me than Paper Mario but Paper Mario will still be amazing. If the NEW label didn’t remove before the announcement of the new DLC fighter approaching, I hope for Paper Mario. NEW label remove then SHANTAE!

Personally I haven't rooted for paper mario at all. I'd rather see a new character than another version of mario :p
But it is nintendo, so it's not impossible for it to happen. I think it would've made sense around when origami king was released though. In any case with 3 slots left I hope we see something interesting :)

Trust. I’ve been playing all Paper Mario game over the years. The first Paper Mario game I played is Super Paper Mario. I remember playing it after I first got Wii on my 8th Birthday. 2nd was Sticker Star in 2015, 3rd Colour Splash in 2016, 4th 64 in 2016, 5th TTYD in 2016 and 6th The Origami King this year. I do enjoy all of them but I mostly love The Origami King because of more stories and more dramatic actions. Poor Bobby for sacrificing for us. RIP brave hero ;(

Anyway I know it‘s off-topic but I just want to share this message for fun. I made Baldi, Kris, Susie, Monika, Sayori, Yuri and Natsuki as fighters. I downloaded Ralsei from somebody else in Smash content because that one is really popular and I don’t know how to make that as a Mii on my own. I also brought Sans, Cuphead and Bomberman back then and made stages for each of them.

Sans from Undertale, Cuphead from Cuphead, Bomberman from Bomberman, Baldi from Baldi’s Basics, Monika, Sayori, Yuri and Natsuki from Doki Doki Literature Club and Kris, Susie and Ralsei from Deltarune has joined the battle!

Sans’s Stage: Last Corridor

Cuphead’s Stage: Inkwell Isle

Bomberman’s Stage: Bomberman Zone

Monika’s Stage: Clubroom

Kris’s Stage: Jevil’s Room

I already talked about the NEW label was still there because of the same IP which it’s Square Enix that already joined alongside with other copyrights. If it was removed then we would get a new copyright like WayForward Technologies Inc or Activision for example.

Look here. Sephiroth is by Square Enix. Already joined with other copryirights after the NEW label was still there. Mojang AB is a new copyright for Steve after NEW label was removed.

NEW label is for newcomers in general, not anyone specific. It'll presumably be removed once :ultsephiroth: launches. Though to my knowledge it usually isn't removed until someone new is about to be revealed.

That said, as far as I've noticed, roster selection is more or less a delicate balancing act; most requested vs. whatever's the most relevant at the time vs. personal Sak picks/whatever Sak happens to like that was picked. Most requested have a higher chance overall of showing up in the base roster (though it's not impossible for some to occasionally pop up as DLC). Wide appeal picks do make sense to add, since that would mainly get more attention/revenue from players/consumers that are outside the core fanbase.

In sum, Shantae would certainly please several fans, but she's still niche, so it wouldn't surprise me if she's saved for another occasion.

Origami King already got a spirit event, so it's a moot point. If PM comes, it would have to be in the final three months of the Mario 35th celebration, otherwise it's no dice for him this time.

Yeah that’s true but doesn’t really stop Paper Mario fully. He still got a shot in someway. We don’t know for sure but he can work.

I think Shantae is coming next. I presume that the tenth Fighter would be revealed at E3 2021 (if it's still being held). Fighter 11 could also possibly be revealed there. There is no dice for Shantae being at E3 and Fighter 11 doesn't really fit her position. It's gotta be Fighter 9. We are getting three more Fighters next year, and I believe FP9 will be revealed in early 2021, FP10 in mid-2021 and FP11 in either mid-2021 or late-2021.

If a double reveal should have at E3 for challenger 10 and 11. FP2 will be finished in the fall. I'm also still unsure if sakurai has steam to continue another DLC pass after FP2 is complete.
