The one you use the most and are most skilled with. My main is Bowser and I have like 20 secondaries.
Hmmm, I'm not sure how to make sense of that, doesn't your best depend on who you're facing? the clashes of styles.
I was doing really good with roy against most, but then a guy with Ryu totally beat me everytime, until I used Jigglypuff, then I decimated him, yet I dont necessarily do well with jigglypuff against others, depending. Same with the rest of characters and styles..

More like your best character you use either because they are your favorite or the one you use that you can win with regardless of who you face.

To the point where an understanding of fundamentals and skill as a player could exceed that of another that for example Olimar could outplay a Sheik.

You can crush any character, if you play your own skilled enough...
Your mains should be the characters, who you really have mastered, or are about to/aspire to.

Went to TV Tropes to post plenty Roy-related stuff on Smash-pages. They really lacked those compared to other characters such as Lucas.

Well they're all my favorites for different reasons :p
But I do wonder about what you and others think about mains, because it hasn't been my experience that skill as a player sticks to one character, it depends on who I'm facing because of 'how' I use my characters, and how they use theirs.

My mains: :4feroy::4lucina::4robinf::4marth::4link::4ness:
Secondaries: :4pit::4darkpit::4palutena::4lucas::4sheik::4shulk::4kirby::4duckhunt::4tlink:
You have a lot of sword users in your mains huh?.. and then ness :p

It's more what mechanics and tools a character's movepool provides. For me Bowser fills that void. And being a nonhuman is a bonus.

With the inclusion of Roy in the newest Smash Bros game I find the final nail in the coffin for two of my favorite characters, Marth and Lucina, has been set. The reason for this: Roy has more combo potential than the other two, less lag, more power, better out of shield potential, better throw combos, and an over all easier mechanic to work with.
What's his weakness again? Projectiles? I'll be glad to keep that in mind next time I play Samus or Zelda. Oh wait. Fast falling? His up B is a great recovery and attack, but now I'm ranting.
My main issue with Roy isn't with Roy specifically, but he made sure that my two personal favorites were useless. They don't have Link's range, Roy's speed or guaranteed combos, or Ike's power. Marth barely hangs on the stage with his tipper mechanic if you want to spend the time to master it. Sure, the tip of FSmash kills at 60%, but with how fast other characters can get Marth to KP the mechanic doesn't shine. Am I over reacting to this?

Anyone figured out how long does down throw> Up B combos until the opponent can start airdodging with and without rage?

Also Up smash is godly lol.

I think, and don't hold me to this, it ends at around 42%. I can go test it if you'd like.

I know what you mean, but surprisingly, after playing roy for a while and playing a bit with lucina today, I find I appreciate her air mobility so much more now, cuz Roy doesn't have a lot of it. And her sword range. I still like Roy better, but I apprecaite Lucina's ways better now :) And she's still good in my eyes. I didnt feel that way at first when I picked up Roy. (I felt she was outclassed)

Yeah, but really her air mobility is all she has over some characters. I dunno, I just think she could benefit from having a bit more range. It just gets really annoying when her sword goes right through characters on certain frames.

I've always been more of an up-close fighter personally, as I prefer getting in and just beating the crap out of someone, which characters like Mario, Roy and Ryu offer pretty well. Though, my guns will always stick with Melee/PM Ganon. :p

TBH, Marth is not to be played necessarily by landing tippers. He's a lot way reaction-based "walling" character today, which makes best use of his current mechanics and tippers. I find him pretty refreshing and effective still - managed to defeat a very good Ryu some days ago with him.

Very true, but I really meant that tippers are his best kill tool. I wasn't very clear in stating that and apologize for the misunderstanding.

Playing Marth after using Roy for a bit is pretty refreshing to be honest. Gives you a deeper appreciation for Marth's
playstyle compared to Roy.

It's like they took Brawl Marth's hot/cold playstyles (aggressive comboing with frame data and disjoints vs. defensive walling
with superior range) and split them into two characters, with Smash 4 Marth being the cold taking maximum advantage of his range
with powerful hits there but lacking the frame data for true aggression, and Roy being the hot not because he has teh ph1r3
but because of better frame data and close sweetspots encouraging aggression, but is lacking in walling potency compared to Marth.

I prefer the agression myself. If I wanna do some walling I also main link.

Roy is legit the only Fire Emblem character I've ever liked (in Smash; haven't played FE Q_Q).

Glad he's back :D He was my main man in Melee before I figured out Mewtwo existed. (At that point I just thought he was really cool; I had no idea how to actually play Smash well as a kid)

Had to download him for this one, and now that I actually know what I'm doing this time around, I'm nowhere near disappointed, and he's been really de-cloned from Marth, and is much more a separate character than he used to be.

He's the only sword fighter I really I really enjoy playing, because of his fast, aggressive playstyle. Much more fun than Marth/Lucina, imo. He's also one of the only characters I actually feel inclined to play now, similar to how I feel about Sonic/Kirby/Mewtwo. (Read: "Roy is now my fourth main")

It's ironic because FE fans hate him, but Smash fans love him. I dunno, it's kind of nice to see how two different gaming experiences can change someones view of one character.

I'm now planing to main Roy when I have money to buy the DLC, he is really a cool FE character to use besides Ike.

He wasn't really a necessary character to be back, but just look how cool they made him right now. He is nearly a new character rather than a veteran.

Event hubs is kinda meh. Their tiers aren't always accurate, but if you want to go off of them feel free. Not gonna tell you what to do. I would say Roy is in top 5 though.

Well if anything, being 2nd on the Event Hubs their list indicates Roy is very popular. I could see Roy genuinely being a top tier character, probably not top five, but he definitely has all he qualities needed to do really well in tournaments. I wonder how people would react back in Melee if someone where to tell them "in the future, Roy will be the top tier character and Marth will be the low tier one. And Ness is really good in the future. Zelda still sucks though, sorry Cosmo."
