Tiers are kind of pointless in Smash to be honest. It's nice to see where your character ranks, yeah but if you're constantly watching the tier list just to play as the top tier characters where's the fun?

Tiers, just like in any game, do serve a purpose. They are a general consensus on where each character stands. In Melee for example, it would be much harder to discuss the viability of Luigi because we would have no shared notion of how good Luigi is. Tier lists really are just quantifying information that's already out there and putting it in a more cohesive form. Also without tier lists we wouldn't have our low tier and middle tier heroes, because again there would be no general understanding of how good the characters are, and seeing aMSa wreck people with Yoshi wouldn't be nearly as cool. The people who only play as certain characters because they're high on the tier list are undoubtedly robbing themselves of fun though.

You present a valid point consisting of things I really wasn't thinking of at the time of my post. So congratulations and thank you, I learned something today. Though I am rather curious to see where Roy places on the tier list.

Bowser + Good reads = S tier
I, too, enjoy Ganondorf.

This.

Though they matter significantly less in this game than Melee and Brawl.

Probably at least high tier. His main weaknesses are his recovery and being combo food from falling faster than the combined speed of 3 foxes. He's extremely solid otherwise.

I completely agree with you, many of the mid and even low tier characters can and have been competing with the higher tiers in the right hands more frequently then the past games. One of the things I really like about Smash 4 is that the best character in the game, which is Shiek IMO, isn't some ludicrously good soul crushing force that 64 Pikachu, Melee Fox, and Brawl Meta Knight were. Oh sure Shiek is still really good, but she is an actual character with legitimate strengths and weaknesses, unlike the other characters (Fox less so but still not exempt) who are simply defined as "the best". Let's be honest though, the only reason this time around is any different is the fact that Nintendo could patch the game. Otherwise we would've been in for one heck of a ride with pre-patch Diddy and Rosalina.

To be fair though, Smash 4 is still fairly new. It takes awhile for the meta to develop to the point where a few characters dominate hardest, and for people to even realize what's truly the best. Olimar wasn't top tier for most of Brawl's lifespan, for example.

:4palutena:
I feel like custome Palutena and Roy would be great doubles partners. Same with Lucina, not so much Marth. Palutena could be the main defensive reaction esc one while Roy/Lucina puts in the damage. BThrow to Palutena U/S smash...

Tell that to:4mewtwo::4feroy::4ryu::4lucas:, especially Mewtwo, poor guy didn't catch a ride on the buff train from Melee like Roy did. I guess he had to take the slight buff taxi to get to Smash 4 instead.

Mewtwo would kill to have any of the weight scores the other 3 have.
Literally, have you heard that laugh? Decreasing Mewtwo's weight was a decision that never made sense to me. I have to assume they overestimated Mewtwo's damage output and kill power and were afraid of having their first dlc character overpowered.

I rode a horse for the first time today.

I can see why Roy never chose to take one up for battle like his father.

Roy without customs is fine to me. I don't like Marth/Lucina's custom specials, and Blazer is pretty much both a normal special and custom special in one move with that angling potential. His other specials are solid all-around and do everything I need, even in a customs environment.

I'm inclined to agree. Most custom moves seem a bit too extreme in their "trade this for that" mentality. Dolphin Jump? Heavy Dancing Blade? I'd still take Roy's default moves.

Oh yes no question hes more usable than melee version and i love hes got de-cloned a tiny bit. (Some attacks still look simular to marth but a lot don't.)

Roy will be maimed. I've played him a little, and I can honestly say I haven't had this much fun with a character ever. He may be more fun than captain falcon for me.

Though I often prefer standard moves myself, having all of the DLC characters get customs in a later update would be awesome for me. I just love the option of playing with customs, mixing things up every once and awhile.

Roy will do just fine without them, and i'll live if they never add them, but simultaneously, I'd love to see what they come up with for him.

Ah, I remember my horseback riding lessons...

Let's just say the stable I went to kinda sucked and I had to ask my friend who's a rider (though went to a different stable) basically everything. They couldn't teach me how to groom a horse properly, so I'm glad I had my friend to help answer questions. I stopped riding though, and for some reason after the lessons I became kinda afraid of horses...

Now that he's in, I threw in a vote for each fighter I would like to see and asked their threads to add me to their supporter lists.

How people work:

Before Roy is leaked/announced:
"Roy is bad. Do we really need Marth, girl Marth and Fire Marth? He's just a clone of Marth but worse because blah blah blah and if you vote for him you're wrong" (Notice the ignorance of the fact that maybe, just maybe they might de-clone him.)

While the Roy announcement: 50-50
"Ugh. Roy? Really? I wanted blah blah blah but Roy?" Or "Yay! Our boy is back!"

One day later:
"Oh. Roy is actually really good! Yay! Go Roy!"
"But Roy sucks."
"You're wrong and you should feel bad"

Your forgetting the group of people who were confused because they thought Roy was already in the game. I'm rather curious what the more casual players think of Roy, since I know some people who have no idea who he is and wish they put a different character in the game.

I'm glad. Hopefully it was from the Roy for DLC Legacy Thread (can be found on the Roy boards), royforsmash4.com, and The Royvolution's efforts as well as his new design and moveset. All of this was pushed hard on other social media platforms too. There were ****ty places like r/fireemblem and GameFAQs, but we still had a lot of success anywhere we went and persuaded a lot of people who went on to continue it. There's also a lot of people accepting defeat and being optimistic and mature on his inclusion, which I'm happy about. They aren't gonna take him out of the game by whining, so I can see why it really calmed down.

This is why i honestly dislike the people who play Roy in only smash 4. They never stuck with him during his hard times in Melee. Not many people play PM so thats not saying much. I just dont like the fact that before he came out everyone is like Roy sucks no one wants him. Day of reveal and release they say hes top tier and hes actually good. I dontt play Roy because hes good. I play Roy because hes fun and I have always played Roy and i aim to be one of the best Roy players in PM and Smash4 since Roy actually got me back into this game.

Good idea with the ballot vote.

I was thinking about sending an email or letter to Nintendo again, but this time thanking them for Roy, and give some positive feedback for him and the other DLC fighters (I'd throw in a comment saying that I hope Roy will become a permanent member of the Smash series in future titles as well).

Yeah... There were people who thought Roy would be the exact same as his Melee self... 100% unchanged. He was planned for Brawl, so I assume Sakurai had some plans to make him more unique like Ganon/Falco back then. Which begs the question: did some of his moveset ideas for Roy in Brawl transfer over to Smash 4 (like the reverse grip, super armour on Blazer, etc.)? Who knows.

The thing I absolutely love about casual players is that they're just like us more inclined toward the competitive side, but are really just here to be along for the ride. It's a much more positive community. Roy and Ryu's reveal was either a really cool thing for them or they just shook their heads and waited for the next drop.

Being a casual player myself, I am usually happy with any new blood in the game. Honestly, I prefer new blood to returning blood.....but if it makes others happy, then I am happy.

Besides, Roys pur boy....amiright?

Don't look at me, I never owned Melee! I thought he was the best character in the game the few times I got to play Melee though does that count? Although I haven't gone through the struggle I'm still going to play him in Smash 4. I bought the dlc before everyone said he was a top tier character because I love Marth and Fire Emblem, and I played with him online and it just felt right. It's funny because 3 out of the 4 characters I play the most, including my main (Falcon, Mario, and Roy) are some of the most straightforward, some would even say easy, characters in the game. But I don't play them because they're easy I play them because I enjoy Smash the most when I'm playing them. So I'm hoping you can accept some fresh faces into the ranks of Roy's army. We all have to start somewhere right?

I think he was talking more along the lines of people who play him in Smash 4 because everyone found out that he's actually a really good character.

I play Roy sometimes for fun in Melee and PM, but not as much as Marth. His counter saved my arse countless times in Melee's events :p He's way more fun in Smash 4, though. Probably won't overtake Marth again, but I might play him a little more seriously this time around.
I admittedly am not a huge fan of his FE game, but my reasoning goes beyond "Roy sucks because he can't one-shot every enemy". Mostly because I didn't find the plot, writing, and characters as strong or memorable as in other FEs. It's been a while since I played it... might give it another look for the sake of our boy; plus I believe the translation patch has been redone, so I might get more mileage out of the writing next time around too.

I don't know, if that was the case they'd probably just jump straight to characters like Sheik or Luigi. Besides, I can't fault them for wanting to play a character that does well considering he costs money. Heck if I was told that Roy was as bad as he was in Melee I probably wouldn't have bought him because he probably wouldn't be fun.
