Some people perfer classic some modern. But what is classic rock and what is modern rock?

Classic rock: Rock music from the 1960s- 80s or sometimes even early 90s. Band Examples- The Doors, Led Zeppelin, The Cult, Boston, ACDC etc....

Rock of today: Basiclly rock music from the 2000's or even late 90's. Band examples- Sum41, Blink182, Green Day etc...

So what do you perfer? I personally perfer classic rock. I can't stand the rock of today. This is really odd since im 13.

So post what you perfer.

personally the great era for music is during classic rock but modern has revolutionized Rock itself with different variants.

I love classic rock, but I don't listen to enough modern rock to have an opinion on it.

I don't really call it classical rock or modern rock. I just call it rock. True rock is timeless dontcha know?

I like both pretty equally. Really depends on the artist or song for me.
I'll listen to anything that sounds good to me, honestly.

That's a bad representation of modern rock. There's a difference between rock and alternative music.

Them Crooked Vultures, for example, is rock through and through. Sum 41 or Blink 182 is definitely alternative.

Although different people interpret genres differently, I think most can agree on the boundaries.

"Hey guys I want to be different in my musical taste everything from after 1980 sucks I'm the ****."

You are exactly like so many other people it's not even funny. If the only music from today that you listen to is Blink 182 than you obviously will think that music today sucks.

I agree, underload, TCV is the ****. Alt rock today is as good as it ever has been.

Not a fan of classic rock, OR most rock of today. Well, let me rephrase that. I don't like classic rock. I DO like today's rock.

BUT, the best ever was from approx 1989-1997

And yeah, im old enough to remember that era. (well, not so much 89-91/2, but after that... yes)

Hm... Rock music, I'd have to say Classic Rock > Today's Rock. Today's Rock is pretty much polluted with everything from electro, hip-hop, metal, country, just, everything...

But TBH I prefer Metal above other "rock" genres, and "80's Metal" above all other Metal, and Megadeth above all other 80's Metal bands.

Though now I believe I will go listen to Angel of Death by Slayer. Yep.

I'm not really big into music, but here's my take on the thing:

Classic Rock = Fun to listen to.

Modern Rock = Pig Squels and Orcs with throat cancer grunting into the mic.

Now that I think about it, classic rock is also a lot more upbeat than modern rock.

Agreed.

I prefer modern rock though... or at least a few bands from it. Generally, the ones with great singers are the ones that catch my interest. I couldn't really care less about the guitars sometimes.

@Finalark
Modern Rock does not equal Death Metal.

No, Sum 41 is punk. At least, their good stuff was. Their new stuff could be called alternative. The only reason this caught my attention though is because I took my senior quote from one of their songs

I really don't have a set genre of music I listen to. I go from metal (like Between the Buried and Me) to alternative (Hoobastank) to emo (Fallout Boy) and then over to J-Pop (Hirano Aya) and J-Rock (Abingdon Boys School). My iPod is the strangest of all of my friends.

I can't stand rap, hip-hop, etc. or country.

i think there always was, always has been, and always will be good and band rock in every time period.

now, i dont like to think of myself as a nostalgia-***, but i just feel like bands today have lost the knack for creating memorable and/or kickass riffs in the vain of early metallica and black sabbath. 99% of people that i say this to will typically bombard me with their personal fav list of obscure indie rock bands, and the vast majority of them do nothing for me, other than fill me with a sense that rock today is much more concerned with either forced nonconformity, image, or simply money.

this is why my favorite band has always been, and perhaps always will be, van halen(Roth-era). sure, they were into intense showmanship, but they had the ******-riffs and hooks to back that up, culminating in a heavy metal package that couldve ruled the music world had David Lee Roth been able to keep himself in check.

show me someone today who can shred with the skill and soul of eddie van halen, and i'll show you the revival of true rock.

I prefer modern rock more but only between the years 1998-2005. I really liked the Nu-Metal era and general rock songs. Linkin Park, Disturbed, Staind, Korn, Offspring, Godsmack, Saliva, Drowning Pool ..etc. Even though many of these bands still exist I don't like their new stuff anymore for the most part.

The Classic Rock definately beats the rock of right now big time. From 2006-Present it seems like all the new rock bands have a Yellowcard type voice or something (mainstream radio, along with what co-workers listen to around me). I seriously can't tell many of them apart. I hate their voices and the music doesn't pump me up at all. The Classic rock was never bad but for the most part it never had a major impact on me besides perhaps 1 or 2 songs. Hair Metal rocks though. Dee Snider and the House of Hair is always on the radio at my work every Saturday night.

I like Classic Rock more, it's because I got into rock by The Offspring (I know, not classic rock), but moved on to AC/DC and finally found Led Zeppelin, which is in my opinion the greatest rockband ever.

But currently I'm more into modern rock, most notably TCV, Street Sweeper Social Club, Wolfmother.

Both types of rock have their absolute highlights for me, but I like the "classic" factor of some Led Zeppelin or Deep Purple, etc. just a tad more^^

Basically this.
But I still like Queen best, dunno if it counts as rock.

If I want classic rock I'm going to pick up some Beethoven.

You all know **** well he rocked hard for only being able to feel the notes for a large part of his career as a composer.

In all seriousness, I like both for what they are. Classic Rock has those timeless hooks and riffs that always give you that smile, and newer rock in general is extremely experimental and fun to listen to.

inb4 any more people saying new rock is hardcore or metal only, many people are missing other facets like Alternative.

When I listen to rock, I tend to listen to classic rock, and most modern rock I know of today is pretty boring. The popular alternative rock bands are very boring. I can dig some indie stuff and post rock, but I wouldn't define them as 'modern rock' either.

True Rock n Roll lost its spirit a while back. Metal is what's going strong now, and I don't mean metalcore.

I can't enjoy classic rock. It's too simplistic and boring for me.

The same goes for most modern rock as well, though.

I'll just add my opinion on classic rock:
I don't mean this in a bad way, but I've always felt that classic rock is the musical "default." Meaning, people who don't really find and get into a music scene default to classic rock. Know what I mean?

I'm sure someone is going to interpret that as musical elitism, but whatever.

No, Sum 41 is punk.
Lol.

No they aren't. You obviously have no idea what punk music is. Punk is a general rebellion against the morals and views of society of the time. The Clash were punk. The Ramones were punk. The Sex Pistols were punk. They were punk because of their lyrical content and how they acted.

Being a ****ty 3-chord band doesn't qualify you as punk, I'm sorry.

I just listen to whatever sounds good, and don't usually pay too much attention to whatever genre it gets lumped into. I listen to mostly classic rock, since my dad has a massive collection of CDs from that era, and that's what he listened to, but I'll listen to other stuff if I have easy access to it.

So... Bob Dylan played punk music?
No. Bob Dylan played folk music that was not radically different from the music of his era. Punk happened because of a couple of factors,

1. a stagnant music scene. Since the 60s, soft rock dominated the pop music scene, along side other types such as Disco and Country the only alternative truly being an occasional Psychedelic band. This stagnant time, as always, leads to an erruption in the art scenes.

2. a recession. Hard times make for great expression, but that's with punk the recession added something different. It defined the sound to some degree. The majority of punk rockers were people who couldn't afford decent instruments and training and had no real job outside of making music because of a lack of jobs.

along with the 70s general hate for establishment.

What you got was people trying to make music against all the music that was out there to full fill their own, and others needs. Now, a lot (not all) of punk rock's lyrics were focuses on things that were and still are pretty common wants, needs, thoughts, and desires, especially in America. They sung mostly about sex, drugs, and women; capitalist all out. They only differentiated from people by the means they sought to get it, that being cut everyone's throats.

Where punk truly broke ideals from the norm was against the music scene. It sought to break all forumlas and expectations, and just make fast, hard music.

Music went from:

to:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wR6w6_x9CXA

A very similar thing is going on in Europe right now with a genre called Breakcore, which is taking the very formulated DnB genre and turning it on its head.as seen in the comparison below
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zENtEumtyBI
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zo16BZwOLH8

That's the difference between Bob Dylan and punk.

Sum 41 are pretty much pop rock.

My friends used to love them as kids (and still like their old songs for nostalgia). I just found their voices too weird. They weren't young boys and they weren't adults, they sounded like adolescents with voice breaking issues. Not dissing them though, that's just the reason I don't really like them.

A lot of the rock of today is alternative. There's bands like lifehouse and switchfoot for example that fall into this category.

I concur. Aaron Funk has helped me get into Breakcore and the EDM genre in general.

Breakcore sounds just horrible though. You need harddrugs to be able to listen to that without getting a heart attack.
