I have a question. How can we get more people to come to tournaments? Build awareness, excitement, motivation to get better (it's hard to be good nowadays) etc.

I think awareness is the key word here.

Montage videos and pictures like the ones Atlus makes are great for that (awareness). People see it and go "WHOA that looks like sooo much fun, I wish I was there" and will go to more, I think.

Also, bring a massload of setups. If people know they can spend all the time playing friendlies when they don't have matches, more people would have fun going to tournies. A lot of people just don't like waiting around. It's half the reason I quit brawl. People don't bring setups, and plus the game takes forever, so Brawl tournies have little to no friendlies, it made me bored. One of the reasons I have so much fun at melee tournies is because you can play so many matches and so many people because people bring setups. So I think setups is a huge key.

i'd give ganon marth's forward smash cause he has a friggin sword.

i'd also replace his n-air with one that either comboed like falcons, or a mewtwo like n-air that hits you with dark energy.

This is a good way to do it.

Add in Mario's or Doc's Backthrow and we've got a winner.

pppffft. I could probably **** you anyway, even with my limited tournament experience.
Probably, since I'm awful at smash. "My dad can beat up your dad" would be just as relevant to the discussion

...but going to less than one tournament a year means you probably don't know anything about the tournament scene, which is why I find you giving advice/info about it rather humorous

Actually, I think I offer another perspective on it: that of the outsider. I'm just commenting on what I felt might attract people to more tournaments: a more inviting atmosphere. My comment kind of added to what edreese was saying about set ups and friendlies. Both socal tournaments I went to had people on tvs playing friendlies between matches. There were times when it was just groups of people doing their thing and playing friendlies against each other without inviting other people in for rotation. The tvs that had a rotation of people playing were much more inviting. Eh, just my thoughts on creating a more inviting atmoshpere.

but how would someone who doesn't already go to tournaments know whether they'll enjoy the atmosphere?

edit: let me break it down to save some time

maybe just play friendlies against people you've never played before. You get to meet new people and are exposed to more playstyles.
a newcomer can't do that unless they're already at the tournament, in which case mission already accomplished

I think people need to make more flyers and stuff

can't expect your average to be checking smashboards every day

Well, I think the idea is that whenever new people do decide to come to tourneys, they will decide to stay. A lot of people go, get *****, and don't want to come back. If there were lots of friendlies, chances are even if they get ***** they still had fun and might still come back.

We should make flyers and have them sent to the nearest game store closest to the venue and have them hand them out.

anyone who's serious about smash already knows about swf
all you have to do is google smash bros melee (im sure)

so my freshman year of college
there were flyers for a melee club at my college on my gf's dorm
so i looked into it
they all sucked
i joined 2 facebook groups
i never went to anything

but here's a true story
i got invited to a tournament:
tournament mode
5 stocks
FD only

they were all like little brother status in terms of skill
i could have won with my bowser
not exaggerating

dantefox stop posting
nightmare mode: dont read the spoiler tag
why because you said so?

I would be more excited to go to tournaments if more people brought setups. Most of the tournies I have been to could use more setups. Also, I ****ing hate when people play sets during friendlies. Friendlies and availability to play them are my main reasons to go to tournaments.

Yeah but,

There are people who know about smashboards but don't even know when tournaments are. How would some random scrub be able to find the right tournaments to go to and everything?

More ads n stuff.

HERE'S MY MAIN SUGGESTION

Have something like SCSA but for Melee, so that there's rankings and point distribution and stuff like that (kinda like MLG but i've never gone to one so i'm not 100% sure)

get sponsors, put ads up everywhere, have people hand out invites to school campuses and other popular areas (malls maybe)

and make it not too expensive
then have champ and neal run it.
and have pools and everything. obviously this would take a lot of work but i think we could get a lot more people to attend. melee might even make a comeback (more than it has already)

so many that tvs were left un attended.

remember last time we went to connors?

like 4 tvs just hanging out of the ground with no use. lol
(mostly because no melee set up, but not everyone has 2 copies of melee)
