The easiest way to make her want to improve is to find some other people around her level.

I think it's safe to say that most melee players in the scene today started at the "I beat all my friends" level and went from there. Forcing things like L-cancelling, wavedashing, etc. can be seriously disorienting if you're still focusing on the very basic parts of the game.

If you manage to win doubles in a tournament with you and your girlfriend on a team, you are automatically the most respected man in the community. Forever.

Are you also getting her in the habit of staring at your character most of the time rather than her own? Even when I was terrible and didn't even know how to read, I noticed that I instantly got better if I focused on my opponent. Eventually, she will start seeing things (even quicker if you guide her on what she should be looking for).

And don't forget to use protection. Shields are 98% effective.

Just because someone is playing, it doesn't mean you need to force them into a pro. Bring them to tournaments and they will start to ask you for help with their own improvements.

The thing is, you are thinking of teaching her competitive melee, not just melee. There's always this wall between the two in any game. Its always really wack when you jump past casual because you always end up telling someone what they have to do and not giving any explanation. While you do get bad habits from casual play (rolling is op) and the actually practice is virtually useless, there is a large benefit to the stepping stone. For example, when I was a casual player I never edge guarded off stage or by grabbing the ledge. It just never occurred to me. But when I heard about it, it made perfect sense. Shffl as well. I never did it but instantly I could see why it was good. It kinda like telling people the intricacies of stealth rocks and having them ask you "grass type is good against water, right?". I would personally not want to be the teacher. But I definitely understand the counter argument, that casual experience is unusable competitively. Sometimes I won't crouch cancel because my instinct is at "this percentage this will happen, so avoid getting hit". Or Ill just attack with a strong move instead of comboing because its best to get in the strongest moves.

yeah jab resets don't work on marth unless you're puff or peach

resets on marth are character dependent

with fox you up smash reset

with sheik you down smash reset

falco laser reset or dair reset or d-smash reset

it's a lot more complicated than it is on ffers

I am a smashers gf that plays melee and I know how she feel when she gets *****. Its frustrating for me bc I know what I want to do but since I main Falco the tech is just soo dam difficult. But just reassure her that most of the players she will be playing have been playing for YEARS tell her to watch alot of videos to understand how to play diffent match ups... And to read the sheik boards... The Falco boards help me alot... Also tell her to communicate with other smashers especially ones that main her character... She needs to practice on her own if she is truly serious.. Bc playing vs someone is good but u still need to practice techs on ur own... Like L canceling .... I learned L cancels with Link easy to see the difference and then after I did it with Falco like nothing... Wavedashing with Luigi helps alot... And find the timing with sheik after.. These are things my bf and frienda thought me.. Also recovery... Hit her off the stage and tell her to recover without killing her just over and over again with the diff ways it can happen...when she wants u to play vs her go all out... Bc it helps alot more.. She should make a SB ACCOUNT...
And if she needs someone to talk to about advice I could help :)..

Sorry for the typos haha.. Im on my phone...

Teach her that spacing is probably the most important thing.

Also, the game has been out for over 10 years and people still don't know how to spell Sheik. What is this?

A lot of things have been mentioned in this [infinite time, playing a certain style over and over until she gets it]

But of course one of the best things you can do is [if this is available to you] record a match, sit down wiht her, and explain to her what she did and what she ought to do
Break it down into steps

Explain that "you are here, you want to eliminate my options by doing this/being here, and using your (X action) to best expand on your strengths"
Make sense?
Like just sit down with her and explain what she's doing wrong, what she should be doing, then IMMEDIATELY sit down and fix one or two things with the ways taught above
Find random people for her to play that's closer to her level

Get them to play, record their matches, break down their games
etc

Also if you haven't watched the "Advanced how to play" videos you should sit down and watch those with her
