I feel an argument about popularity v. quality coming on
which will include a reference to Twilight as an example of the former
and a third party will shut us up with a well-rounded and succinct explanation of why both sides don't have to be mutually exclusive, using One Piece as an example
and we'll all be happy again

LOL

i read the first couple lines, and then your next 3 lines were exactly what i was going to do.

yeah, j k rowling being good is just the cause of her popularity. harry potter is really just an amazing story

oda does not take that many breaks relative to the quality of his work
that is a really good point

I think Rowling is a good writer, but because her work has become so popular, people forget that are other authors that deserve the same kind of recognition, if not more compared to her. A comparison to how there is naturally more than one Beyonce or Eminem out there, people just don't know about them =/.

In other words, she has luck to thank a lot.

orrrr she's really popular because she's a really good writer and is not lucky in the slightest :p
or if she was lucky, it might only be in that the world had a huge boner for wizards that was satiated at the right time.
And even objectively, there is no series of books that have had as big an impact on the children of the 21st century as Harry Potter has.

I never even read past the first book though :/

lucky or not, she wrote well enough to set the bar

i enjoyed every moment of the harry potter novels (except for one overly dramatised sentence at the climax of deathly hallows - yes, i remember it that clearly and i haven't touched the books in quite literally years)

and then people start thinking mainstream = bad :urg:

if that starts happening in wider society, then people in general suck

oh wait hipsters NVM

artemis fowl was once a stellar series

There are a lot of ways you can attribute to luck, and I agree with almost any sentiment, because it depends on the situation. Such as "you make your own luck" or "there is no such thing as luck." I never said she didn't reach her popular due to her lack of skill. All I said was that there are other writers out there, as good or better than Rowling that don't get the same recognition as her for whatever reason that may be. Marketing, recognition, appeal, etc. By your statements, you are inferring that there is no luck involved, Twilight is a great series, Stephenie Meyer is a great author, and she just happens to be making a lot of money, because everyone has a boner for vampires and werewolves.

Whether or not there are many better authors than Rowling (definitely there are), they don't get the same recognition because they aren't selling stories that are so embraceable by so many people. That's easy
I never implied all the popular authors are good as well (Meyer), I'm saying one shouldn't overlook the quality of an author (Rowling) after the fact just because their fame may be disproportionately huge.
You've gotta be good first, but your last clause is true, Meyer does seem to have inadvertently struck at a communal boner that has made her undeservedly rich.
Harry Potter has many arguably good attributes. Rowling got famous because she's a not terrible author with a very embraceable story.
Twilight is poor. Meyer got famous because she's lucky.

Do you know how many JUMPs that would be? Probably a gazillion-ish, while he only has one house at a time. No, the house plan is definitely the one to go with. He doesn't need the monies to keep writing OP anyway, and more writing = new monies.

do you KNOW how much it costs to keep a good house in Japan?
No I do not, but I can't imagine that they burn any different.

:starman:SUPAA:starman: impressed since I would do it in the guise of Sogeking, that way he'd realise that he's the evil and corrupt Marines in my complex arson metaphor.

Meanwhile hundreds of millions of people think she's amazing.
Same for Justin Beiber.

I liked Harry Potter when I was in 4th grade.

WHEN I WAS IN 4TH GRADE. And then I found Orson Scott Card and eventually Hemingway.

John, I am not a hipster. I would LOVE it if the things I liked were more popular. It would mean more people in the world have good taste.

So many people of both genders and all different ages love Harry Potter. Can that be said for Justin Bieber?
Besides, there is no objective measure for quality, so you might as well go by what most people think. It doesn't mean that you have to like it though.

Oh and disliking something that you liked as a kid does not maker you cooler :troll:

plumbers don't wear ties?

also, saying harry potter = bad and then referencing hemingway...that isn't an argument, that's just you dismissing good literature for an insufficient reason

i liked samurai x when i was in 4th grade, sneaking out of bed to watch it on adult swim...that hasn't stopped me liking ruroken now

ive read a decent amount of classic and worldly literature, and i can still appreciate a good fantasy novel...jk rowling is just an immensely talented storyteller, that's all, doesn't have to be specifically about language and the like

You make some good points, but I have to agree with Choknater on this one.

Either it's not going to be that good and extremely overrated because Rowling, or it's going to be better and all the Potter fanboys will think it's not as good.

Anywho:

It's not a tier list if there's only one tier :embarrass:

A tier list would look more like this:

Robin tier:

Kid Robin
Ms. All Sunday
Robin
Time skip Robin

God tier:

Zoro
Chopper

Top tier:

Franky
Luffy
Brook

S tier:

Usopp
Sanji

A tier:

Nami

Top Bottom
