For "our scene" I'd say smash 64 on virtual console is more enjoyable for most of us.

As a guy who's played on keyboard, gc and 64 controllers and is aware that every character's "tech skill" prefers one over the other (Ness / Fox I was more comfortable with on keyboard due to jump key mappings being convenient for their techs, but otherwise GC controllers are the most fluid for everything else I've played... although running usmashes and stuff [falcon] is a lot easier with n64 controllers) but playing it on GC makes it a lot more portable for most people (in terms of the equipment as well as getting new people playing it) and blah blah blah.

Luco, some of your air "set ups" or combos with Ness were quite good though. Ricky/Meteor Master would have been proud.

I could dash shine cancel on keyboard.
Couldn't come close on GC... although i suppose i didn't practice that hard.

With Ness I felt a lot more control in comboing/djcing... but recovering (well his recovery sucks anyway but being forced to the same angles of recovery is balls)

Actually Falcon with keyboard is a lot easier at a basic level too lol.

Enjoyed this tournament SO MUCH I’m bothering to write shoutouts. Wow.
Super cool to see and meets lots of new people, I’m kind of motivated to practice Brawl a bit after playing a few of you new guys. Need a new character though. G&W sucks.

Scoot: Kind of mad I lost to you Melee, though it seems like you were on point yesterday. Always good to see you.
I've actually been picking up and learning melee more recently. I think you know more about Melee than I do, but the basics like spacing and stuff like that just carry over for me. Not to mention Marth vs Peach is pretty gay. Doubles games were pretty fun.

with falcon you literally only need one 'hard' tech, platdrop u-air

everything else is ezpz, buffering is only needed for sh aerials or d-air edgeguarding, you get full stick jumps with a button press

ness recovery is still 'versatile' (by versatile i mean still reasonably controllable), as long as you start it a bit earlier if you want a flatter trajectory

Yeah, his PK Thunder was definitely better for him in brawl.

Shaya: Well, i guess thats so, i was thinking of bringing in the N64 + controllers mostly for nostalgia, plus i could bring MK64 in and have fun playing that with you guys. I'm not used to the gc controller, so my 64 skills were horrible. I find the N64 c-stick awesome, but thats probably cause i've grown up with it and when i play with the N64 controller it feels like i'm using an extension of my own hand. I imagine that's how many of you feel with the gc controllers.

Maybe we can bring in both the virtual console and the N64 next time? It'd be a win for everyone :D

And thanks for the compliments shaya. Truth be told i learnt that combo from youtube, but i don't think it was this ricky you speak of that i looked up. Hmm...

But yeah i really can't wait to verse some people so i can get better. :)

Does virtual console accept N64 controllers, by any chance? :p

*sigh* if not it looks like i'll have to adapt to GC controllers for 64. I don't relish the idea...

Yes, B-Sticking can be used for PK-Fire to PSI-Magnet tricks, but it's not really necessary. Lucas' recovery is good enough that he doesn't need them during a match.

the only shot at making 64 a tournament standard is through using wiis and VC/homebrew/whatever

GC controllers for 64 aren't that bad tbh

there is one guy called ricky on youtube atm who is ridiculously baller at making 64 combos - he's also a keyboard player lol

Lucas's recovery is pretty ..... meh
Ness' recovery is meh, Lucas' is excellent. His PK Thunder sends him significantly further, provided you can use it properly, especially if you can control if offscreen. I once recovered from a Ganon spike (I forget what damage, 30-50% I believe) using only PK Thunder as I didn't have time to midair jump; the Thunder alone sent me from below the screen to the ledge of FD. Also, his helpless DI is excellent, usually allowing you to manouvre to safety even if you've got a way to fall.

TL;DR Lucas' recovery is very underrated, it's great if you can use it.

Lucas's recovery is actually quite bad lol.

Pretty easy to punish and edge hog, although no one here does it properly.

Then again, I just have a hatred for lucas since i used to main him. I found him terrible to use, but thats under my handling.

Lucas's recovery is excellent compared to Ness, of course and considering half the time you have to angle it rather than just do the full motion, leaves Lucas offstage for a reasonable amount of time.

With that being said, it is kinda hard to punish when done correctly.

Edit: LOL, Seems like everyone has a pocket Lucas nowadays.

If we want smash 64 to become somewhat standardised in playing, having virtual console and 64s is lose/lose.
adapters exist/can be made, but is what I hear about the 64 having ghosting issues true? I'd be 100% for vc version if that's the case.

anyway, speaking of standardising, y'all should get the official vc wad, it has like grab on z 'n ****.

theres adapters that work fine that can do:
n64 to gc and n64 to gc etc,i built both and they work fine

64 ghosting issues?wtf?

some reports that virtual console has frameskips.

I dunno, I read somewhere the 64 controller can't have all its buttons registered at the same time or something. I don't know how true it is though.

I've seen the vc frameskip but it never seems to do it more than once per session (that might be the usb loader tho, I dont recall it happening to the old sin & punishment inject). Nothing that can't be solved with warmup friendlies.

We can play AC and then await the AACC netplay hack.

Shaya once you get a combo down you'll do that much damage as well, ****.

That's not ghosting, that's n key rollover, FFFFFFFFFFFF
I knew someone would say this. I'm well aware. Used the more common term to make sure people knew, not everyone knows the difference lol.

Stop being such a scrubadub
and losing to me in 64 lol

Melancholy if you want we can discuss hosting and such in PM at one point.

As for everything else, Lucas is awesome, 'nuff said. ;)

And as for the 64 thing, i dunno about all that stuff, i really just wanted to bring it in for fun. Why not have the N64 version purely as fun play and the VC console as competitive play for 64? That would work, yes?

64 and VC are pretty similar, there should be no distinction between VC and N64 for competitive/friendlies

dont think he was talking to you luco
I disagree. The fact is that at this stage in the game's lifespan, VC is actually MORE ACCESSIBLE than an actual 64 version.

It's just like the NTSC vs PAL melee. The one reason there is for actually playing PAL (besides the obvious Sheik ultra-gayness) is that PAL is more accessible to people in this country.

Like if you want to play 64 on a 64, you need to either already own a working one and have smash 64 and still know where everything from your old 64 is, but to play the VC version you just say "YO EA DO THIS FOR ME" and he does it because he is the man.

I have a working 64 and know where it's cords are. I just don't have the game anymore. If someone brought the game, that would be a different matter :)

Plus playing 64 with gc controllers doesn't feel as comfortable to me. Hmmm...

Smash 64 in New South Wales (well at least at my tournaments) will be using VC.

AND DONE

Having the two is problematic for reasons stated.
And VC version is currently a lot more accessible and hence is preferred.
No need to discuss this further, decision is made.

from a competitive standpoint

VC 64 is generally NTSC and thus automatically superior to N64 (PAL version) - this is huuuuuge
64 controllers are derpy to most people
VC 64 has slightly less lag in teams scenarios

i dunno if enough people are competitive to warrant any considerations other than convenience

and convenience seems to favour the better competitive option anyway
