Do not misconceive, people leaving right after the tournament doesn't have nearly as much to do with me halting my tournaments as others seem to be saying. Last I checked, Travis was the first to actually ask why I stopped hosting tournaments. I never gave anything close to a good explanation, and I'm surprised it wasn't brought up way sooner.
Good players leaving right after the tournament does not bother me so much. The irksome thing is that there are subpar players that leave right after as well.
I don't like hosting tournaments in my basement. I have never liked hosting tournaments in my basement. With the exclusion of of SMASH F³ (and its predecessors), my tournaments have always been organized because other people want them to be tournaments instead of smashfests.
When I started hosting regularly, Melee was close to being dead. Every person who was coming to my smash stuff would tell me that Melee was dying. Melee was getting tiresome and Brawl was taking over. I never thought that, ever. Four months after the release of Brawl, when I started hosting these, I knew that as long as Brawl exists competitively, Melee cannot die. People will realize Brawl's limits and look for expansion, and by virtue of nearest neighbor, Melee will be sought.
One year later, I have been nothing but right.
There are other hosts now. I don't have to go through the stress of hosting tournaments in my basement now, because someone else will be there to pick up the slack. My basement is not a venue, it is part of my home.
If I had a car and a venue, I would begin hosting tournaments again in a heartbeat.
It's a miracle I'm as good (read: mediocre) at smash as I am. I've been playing for just short of two years. By my count, I've been to two 'real' tournaments that were not hosted by me, one at Chu's and the other at MAGFest. Though MAGFest was full of noobs, I knew then, that's what a tournament is supposed to feel like. My tournaments generate nothing like that. My tournaments are smashfests without flexibility.
I'm not going to deal with being uncomfortable in my own basement while putting out a suboptimal product. Not anymore. Maybe when I get my driver's license I'll start hosting tournaments again, if I can find a venue.
