Fox might be best, but he's certainly not the easiest... and lets be real, we all are so far from top level play that "ease of use" is a relevant factor for us.

Most other (good) characters fighting Fox get to adopt a much more linear approach to fighting him and still be successful, since they punish him harder than vice versa.

falco is the best character until you have perfect spacing

even then he has no real negative matchups, fox just has better matchups


on fox:

fox does have a lot of close matchups for his placement in the tier list, though. sheik and marth and falco almost always have advantageous matchups once you get to mid-tier characters. they often only have to use a simple strategy the entire game in order to consistently win.

fox/doc&mario, fox/samus, fox/pikachu, fox/DK...

these are matchups that are notably harder for fox to play than other top tiers...

with fox you have to have knowledge of the matchup if you really want to make it that 70/30 advantage everyone has in their head. marth and sheik already know what defeats half the cast, because it's the same few things for every character. there are only a few matchups they need to know beforehand if they want to win, when it comes to low tiers.

I suppose Fox players have been losing in tournaments for so long that I'll let them have the john that their character is oh so hard to play.

I'll also volunteer my shoulder for crying whenever they feel the burden of their character choice has gotten too much to handle.

One day I'll pick top tier and become the best player in the world.

In the meantime I'll just stay a lowly Roy main. ;)

just so everybody knows i'm not saying fox is really any harder when you keep the game within top/high tier limits

i'm saying you need to learn more about lower tier matchups than the other top tiers


tech skill might be a turn off for some people but the necessities come with time

I think this is reasonable.

Though, I think Fox's popularity is more to blame for why so many Foxes lose to mid tiers than anything particular about him as a character. Take Samus for example. Her v. spacies matchup is generally considered even or close to it. But in practice, its generally tilted far in Samus' direction. Samus players get a lot of Fox practice and Fox players get very little Samus experience; so throughout this game's history Samuses have been destroying Foxes, even when the Fox player is commonly thought to be the better player.

That effect is felt among the other top tiers too for sure (there are a lot of Falcos, Falcons, and Marths too) but for no one more than Fox.

There might be some tournaments going on down SOVA, but nothing's really planned out yet. Progress would be happening if I brought my Wii and GameCube down here. Suddenly there's hidden casual Smashers everywhere. Last year almost no one I could find played Smash

To add to the Fox discussion, I'm on the side that believe Fox is probably the best character in the game, but also probably the hardest to be totally consistent/effective with. Tie that in with the fact that he gets brutalized when he makes a mistake vs. pretty much any high/top tier and add in some tourney nerves and suddenly fox can be a frustrating, unmanageable beast, no matter how good he is. Granted, being nervous and making mistakes is the player's fault, not Fox's fault.

Next week I am free wednesday and thursday. Saturday I don't go in to work until midnight. Sunday I get off work at 4 pm. If anyone who is at least halfway decent wants to come play, hit me up with a text or something and we can work something out.

But for Winter break, I'll talk to those library guys and see if I can rent out their fancy room. Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday would probably be the best/only days because that's when they close the latest (9pm)

@ Sypher, I honestly have no idea how good you or Winston or pretty much anyone else in this region is. If you can get 1-2 other people to come with you, then sure I can play from 1-2pm to 11:30 pm saturday. I do have roommates (luckily they used to be part of Team Richmond and they understand Melee fests) so all I ask is that people aren't really loud or obnoxious. Also, I don't want to sound cocky even though I'm definitely going to........But I really don't like playing with people who whine or john when they get *****. Come here expecting to either get ***** or to get the hell sandbagged out of you for being a whiner. Believe me, I can sandbag like it's my ****ing job and then it won't be fun for anyone but me. Maybe I'm just the Melee grinch or something, but that's how it is. So those are the rules. Hit me up if you want some good practice lol.

-Edit- If you're uncomfortable with the use of drugs or alcohol, don't come.
